A few months back we had a chance to see Clown in a Cornfield. On last week's show we reminded everyone that it was coming to theaters. Its box office performance was still surprising to us. We also talk about how well the new Final Destination movie will probably do- even though it probably shouldn't.We have had a great time with the last two releases from Osgood Perkins. His next film looks like it is going to be awesome. Just check out the hour long promo that was recently revealed. Something frightening is definitely going on there. Plus, what is happening to all the live service horror games?Haunted house stories have long been a part of horror. One of the most popular takes on the sub-genre is whether the haunting is real or a trick. It is probably most well known from Scooby-Doo, but it goes back much further. The Ruse may be a little too on the nose with its title, but it does do some things right. The problem is, with this type of story, you pretty much have to do everything right. Even the smallest mistake can be immersion breaking and ruin the whole thing. And there is a lot of that here. Some of it is so bad it actually becomes funny. Unfortunately, most of it is just plain bad.A Breed Apart is a weird movie. The premise is cut and dry. A group of influencers go to a private island and end up in a battle for survival against a pack of wild dogs. But everything around it is just odd. It is not the fact that the movie never explains exactly what is going on. And it is not because it does not truly find itself until the final ten minutes. It is not even because of the really strange dialogue. What makes it so interesting is the fact that the majority of it may have been done through AI. How can you tell the difference between CGI and AI? How did it impact A Breed Apart? Was the script done with AI? We try to answer these questions and more in our latest show. In 2015, the World Health Organisation set the goal of eradicating rabies deaths from dog-bites to “Zero by 2030”. A team at the University of Glasgow and colleagues in Tanzania have been assessing the efficacy of dog vaccination schemes for reducing the numbers of human infections over the last 20 years. As Prof Katie Hampson tells Science in Action, in rural areas especially, vaccinating dog populations does work, but you need to keep at it, and not leave patches untouched. It should be funded as a public health measure, rather than a veterinary issue. Last weekend, the remains of a failed 1972 Soviet mission to Venus landed harmlessly somewhere back on earth. As the BBC's Maddie Molloy explains, the fears were that the robust lander craft would survive re-entry into earth's atmosphere as it was originally engineered to withstand the harsh pressures and chemistry of Venus. How and why then would sketches be emerging of Chinese plans to launch a sample-return mission to Venus in the next decade? Science Journalist Andrew Jones describes some of the challenges they will face collecting droplets of the highly acidic atmosphere somewhere 60km above the surface and turning round to head back to earth. Why? William Bains of Cardiff University is one of a growing number of scientists interested in exploring some of the more exotic possibilities for complex organic biology in the otherwise destructive sulphuric, hot, dense, low pH clouds they will find. This may be the 666th episode of The Ledge, but there’s nothing evil about the music played tonight. It’s actually nothing but joyful noise, 38 blasts that prove that rock and roll is as strong as ever. And once again, we traverse the world for quality sounds. Besides the usual lineup of Americans, there’s not one but two fabulous bands from France, along with other European artists. There’s the usual handful of Australians. There’s also a plethora of veterans still pumping out records you need to hear. Muck and the Mires have been releasing garage rock for over 25 years. The Rabies reunited after 40 years for one of the great surprises of the years. Former Soft Boys guitarist Kimberly Rew returns. Personlity Cult may be much younger, but they consist of members of Ledge favorites Mind Spiders and Paint Fumes (plus many other bands). What’s your favorite new release? I left you with a bit of a riddle last week as to today's topic and as you can see, we are discussing Rabies! This is an older virus (belonging to the genus of Lyssaviruses—named for the minor Greek goddess of rage and fury, Lyssa). We are focusing on the history, mythology, pathology and signs and symptoms of the disease as well as how the first rabies vaccine was developed back in 1885 and historical cures that were not effective and a little on the weird side. From stories of “Mad Dogs” to the use of “Madstones,” we are taking a walk through history on how rabies has been a formidable and fearsome enemy to humanity and wildlife alike. We will take a look at how the disease spreads and how long it may take for symptoms to show. Hopefully, for you they never do, because once symptoms show, it is nearly 100% fatal. Less than 20 people have survived rabies and we will talk over some of these cases as well. With the proper prophylactic vaccines we have now, even post exposure, it is nearly 100% preventable. We will go over what animals carry it and are affected by it and what to look for there. I will surely rant about not approaching wildlife in general if you are not experienced as a handler or whatever, because rabid or not some animals will not hesitate to defend themselves, their young, or their territory. Also, if you have any sort of encounter with an animal known to carry rabies, it is important to seek prophylactic treatment, bite or no bite. There have been cases of victims being infected without being bit, and you may not even know you have been anyway by some of these animals. Thank you to all of our listeners and supporters! The first human vaccines against viruses were based using weaker or attenuated viruses to generate immunity. The smallpox vaccine used cowpox, a poxvirus that was similar enough to smallpox to protect against it but usually didn't cause serious illness. Rabies was the first virus attenuated in a lab to create a vaccine for humans. Vaccines are made using several different processes. They may contain live viruses that have been attenuated (weakened or altered so as not to cause illness); inactivated or killed organisms or viruses; inactivated toxins (for bacterial diseases where toxins generated by the bacteria, and not the bacteria themselves, cause illness); or merely segments of the pathogen (this includes both subunit and conjugate vaccines).

“By creating this barrier to rabies between wildlife, pets, and people, it's not just about the well-being of the cats—it's about the well-being of the community.” This episode is sponsored-in-part by Maddie's Fund, The Community Cat Clinic, and the Whisker Tracker App. In this episode of the Community Cats Podcast, host Stacy LeBaron sits down with Dr. Bob Weedon, an expert in veterinary public health and a leading advocate for Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) programs. Dr. Weedon shares insights into how TNVR programs are essential for managing cat populations and offer critical public health benefits. By vaccinating community cats, TNVR efforts create a vital “barrier” against diseases like rabies, protecting pets and humans. Dr. Weedon explains how public health officials can embrace TNVR as a community health strategy, emphasizing the power of collaboration between local governments, public health departments, and animal advocates. The conversation ventures into the science behind rabies immunity, debunking misconceptions about cat-related diseases like toxoplasmosis, and why cat advocates should focus on reducing misinformation. Dr. Weedon also gives a sneak peek into potential breakthroughs in non-surgical sterilization techniques, which could revolutionize community cat management. Whether you're a cat advocate, public health professional, or just interested in animal welfare, this episode sheds light on the multi-layered impact of TNVR programs on communities nationwide.
