Growing up in the shadow of five older siblings who were successful in business produced added pressure for Jim Gaffigan to follow in their footsteps. Ignoring the calling of his heart, he did what was expected of him, attended college and studied finance. But in the wake of his mother's death, he “felt like the line of thinking [he'd] been taught was broken.” In this episode, Jim explains how he made the shift from working for an advertising company to becoming a multi-award-winning actor and comedian. Jim Gaffigan is an American standup comedian, actor, writer and producer. His often-observational humor is frequently about fatherhood, laziness, and food. Considered to be a “clean” comic, he uses little profanity in his routines. Jim has had several successful comedy specials, including Mr. Universe, Obsessed, Cinco, and Quality Time, all of which have received Grammy nominations. He is the New York Times bestselling author of two books: a memoir, Dad Is Fat and Food: A Love Story. He and his wife, actress Jeannie Gaffigan, have collaborated extensively in various creative projects. Together, the couple have five children.
This week we present two stories from people who found themselves without the tools they needed. Part 1: When Jack Walsh finds out his first child will be born in just a few days, he panics. Part 2: After experiencing hearing loss, Jeannie Gaffigan receives the startling news that she has a brain tumor. Jack Walsh is an Emmy-winning television producer, a generally engaging storyteller, a halfway-decent writer, and the world’s worst guitar player. He has performed at the Moth, the Atlanta Science Festival, DragonCon, and, strangely, a Yom Kippur service. A native of Canton, NC, he now lives in Decatur, GA, with his wife and two daughters. Jeannie Gaffigan is a director, producer and comedy writer. She co-wrote seven comedy specials with her husband Jim Gaffigan, the last 5 of which received Grammy nominations. Jeannie was the head writer and executive producer of the critically acclaimed THE JIM GAFFIGAN SHOW, and collaborated with Jim on the two New York Times Bestsellers, DAD IS FAT and FOOD A LOVE STORY. Jeannie’s own book, WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU PEARS, debuted on the New York Times Bestsellers List. Jeannie, with the help of her two eldest children and some other crazy moms, created THE IMAGINE SOCIETY, INC., a not for profit organization that connects youth-led service groups. Most impressively, she grew a tumor on her brain stem roughly the size of pear. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The comedian and author of Dad Is Fat was only fat for a little while. On this week’s episode, Gaffigan deconstructs the beauty myth; talks gymnastics; takes a call from a fan of his yoga videos; and reveals the difference between "this and that" and "that and this."
For this episode, Paul catches up with his old buddy, comedian Jim Gaffigan, and they discuss Jim's new book "Dad Is Fat" which was released on May 7th, and available at bookstores now! Jim discusses the inspiration of the book, his life with his wife raising 5 children in New York City. The two reminisce about doing shows years ago in NYC and touring together. Jim is also fascinated about Paul's weird food habits and preferences. Especially the fact that Paul has never tried guacamole. They discuss trying bone marrow at a dinner they had an Paul's friends high end restaurant in NYC. They also talk about Jim's climb to standup success with his 3, 1 hour comedy specials. Then the two get into some sports talk when they discuss growing up in small towns and also we found out both Jim and Paul had to wear eye patches when they were kids. Jim talks about his wrestling and college football career. The fact that football practice gave him nightmares, and the intimidation tactics the football coaches at Georgetown tried to use on him to keep Jim from quitting the team. The two talk about Jim's future plans, the benefits of being underestimated, and avoiding humiliation in showbusiness. To purchase "Dad Is Fat" online, go to www.jimgaffigan.com

Plus--A trip to the botanical garden, and what we can and can't get from trees! Jenny McCarthy Versus Amanda Bynes, and how unfair that match-up is! One World Trade Center's literal sky-cock measurements! Different ways to metaphorically poison yourself! And the latest hurtful thing Mad Men has done to black people. A FINE AND FUNNY SHOW FOR YOU.
