Back in 2009, Josh Cherry and Robby Marlow started a bootcamp in a parking lot training friends and family members for a few years, but ultimately didn’t know where to go from there. They soon reached out to NPE and worked their way through all program levels within just a few years time, being named NPE Members of the Year in 2015 while growing to 25 licensed locations across the USA. Today, they’ve now grown Delta Life Fitness to the fastest growing women’s fitness franchise with over 73 locations sold in the United States and are on track to hit 100 units this year (a feat only about 4% of franchises ever achieve)! Business Playmakers podcast is exited to bring you the Co Founder and President at Delta Life Franchising, and Radio Host at Texas Franchise Radio, Robby Marlow. Robby had his first experience as an entrepreneur as a 12 year old who convinced his dad to buy him as CD burner. Robby would download songs from Napster, and burn CD’s of multiple songs so he could take them to school and sell them. Robby’s father was an engineer, so he went to school to be an engineer, and at 24 he found himself working in an office cubicle, and had become overweight and un-healthy. He connected with a friend who had a successful fitness class, which Robby participated in to get in shape. As he started getting in shape and feeling better about himself, Robby developed a passion for fitness. This passion is what inspired Robby to start coaching others to get in shape as well. As time went on and Robby realized he could develop a business around coaching others to get in shape, he and his business partner opened a facility of their own. According to Robby’s LinkedIn profile, Delta Life Fitness is a group training workout for women. Delta Life’s training is designed to maintain a target zone that stimulates metabolism and increases energy. The website www.deltalifefitness.com promotes 30 minute workouts, and free childcare. With more than 25 locations across the country, Delta Life not only empowers women through fitness, it also encourages entrepreneurship in franchising by allowing someone who is passionate about fitness to own their own location. This is The Do It For Yourself Podcast. Each week I sit down with someone who is doing it for themselves and chasing a dream they just couldn’t suppress. This is often speakers, entrepreneurs, or athletes. They all share one thing in common, they are overcoming challenges and never giving up. Someone who is Doing It For Themselves is not selfish in their pursuit, they are simply chasing a dream or working towards a goal because it is something THEY want to do. They are not forging down a path because society or someone is telling them it’s what they should be doing. This week my guest is no different. Robby started his business literally from the ground up and has now grown it to more than 40 locations. Robby started as an overweight guy, working a job that he didn't love. He found fitness because he did not want to be put on blood pressure medications and everything else his doctor was proposing to him. Robby began his fitness journey and through this journey, he found his love for health and fitness. What he found was that he loved the endorphin rush and the benefits so much, he wanted to share that with anyone he possibly could. Robby began coaching boot camp style classes in a park near his office before and after work. Similar to our early guest Devin, he bribed his family to come to the first park class so that it didn't look like he had no one there. Robby was surprised when a few people showed up and he continued to bootstrap this business. Robby would post flyers and talk about his business anywhere he could to grow it. Eventually, Robby knew he couldn't do this on his own so he brought on a partner and also a mentor to help him from this business. Through his mentor and some motivational fitness entrepreneurs, Robby realized he needed to get very specific about who he was trying to serve. He narrowed it down to women, who are busy, and often have families they need to take care of. He knew that their time was limited and they would have about 30-45 minutes for a fitness class. Robby took this and ran with it. Robby took everything that his mentor taught him to grow this business from just a small boot camp style class in the park to 40 locations of Delta Life Fitness as of this writing. I am really excited to share this journey of both health and entrepreneurship with you on the podcast! Robby's Instagram Delta Life Fitness Do It For Yourself Instagram Support the show here!

Good Morning Friends, Sorry it has been so long. For the last 7 weeks I have been working out every day, with over 50 workouts clocked at Delta Life Fitness. I am a new huge believer in group fitness for that built in accountability and for the friendships I have created. I am still working out at home, but it is true, I am addicted to my Delta Life classes. Then for the last 8 weeks I have been drinking ketones every day, and honestly, that has changed my life. I went on YouTube some days back and uploaded a video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ns0_MT4gdTw&t=5s. I look crazy bloated in this video, but oh well. I have been consistently updating and documenting my life over on Instagram, so if these hiatuses are rubbing you the wrong way, just find me there, http://instagram.com/jordanschilleci. But business is going great. I have closed on 5 deals so far this year, with 7 on the books, and 4-5+ in the wind. I am exactly where I want to be goal wise, and I tear up every time I think about it. My whole life is right here being laid out in front of me, and it isn't possible for me to be any happier. Life is good. Well I am uploading this mid-workout, and I still have to wake and dress the kids. I hope you have a fan-freaking-tastic day. I think I am getting a leisure day, as starting Thursday, I don't see one in sight. Oh yes, and I can't forget to tell ya, I am building in TWO off days (Tuesday/Thursday) this summer for the kids!! Love y'all,
Hi Y'all, I am so sorry I haven't been updating y'all on the blog lately, but feel free to follow me on Instagram (jordanschilleci) or Facebook (jordanschillecirealtor) to stay in the loop. I promise to get back to the podcast regularly, but until then.. For the last 9 days I have been waking up to work out. Eight of those days I have woken up at 4:45 (or earlier) to attended the 5:15 AM class at Delta Life Fitness (Klein-Spring). If you haven't tried out their gym (women only), you really should. Most of the classes have built-in childcare! Any who.. After class today, I interviewed the Operations Manager for the Delta Life Fitness corporation, Christin Cherry. She has grown to be my friend, so don't mind the giggles. Lol. Love y'all,
Today’s show featured Josh and Christin Cherry, creators and franchisors of Delta Life Fitness (deltalifefitness.com). Josh and Christin share their story of how a private boot camp class for women has turned into a national [...]
This week Josh Cherry, former US Marine and CEO/Founder of Delta Life Fitness, joins us to discuss the importance of nailing your target member persona, creating a memorable client experience, the power of extending your member experience beyond the facility, and how a great member experience can drive fun, community and engagement for you 24/7/375. [1:51] How Josh’s background in the US Marine Corp as a PTI, physical training instructor, inspired his passion for overall wellness. [3:03] When it makes sense to open additional business locations using a licensing model versus a franchising model, and the struggles associated with each one (Josh has 22 licensees and 7 franchise locations for Delta Life Fitness today). [6:07] How it came about that Josh started a female only fitness center. Being passionate about fitness and providing clients solid results only gets you so far when you have to break through the noise of all your competitors. [7:17] The power of digital marketing and how picking one specific target market can help you to be a sucessful with your overall marketing plan and in your business. [8:21] When it comes to developing your target persona and marketing strive for: “Specificity with simplicity." - Josh Cherry [10:10] The importance of building an overall positive client experience, not just being results driven: “People join a studio or gym for results but they stay for the experience.” - Josh Cherry [12:00] Technology applications are huge for client experience in 3 main areas. 1. Easy high tech assessments 2. Technology and immediately following a workout. 3. Community building outside of the gym itself. [14:40] Delta Life’s three standing challenges each year to help build their client experience. [16:16] Josh’s take on the importance of scalability for fitness businesses. [17:21] The advice Josh would give to his younger self for building his fitness business and brand. For episode 42, we tap into the roots of what technology is making an impact on the floor of one of the fastest growing studios in our space, Delta Life Fitness with CEO, Josh Cherry. In our previous episodes around fitness studios and making fitness fun through tech and gamification with Lindsey Rainwater and Shannon Fable we've talked about what various cloud-based solutions and tactical approaches are important to create an enhanced user experience, but on today's podcast we take an even deeper dive into what is driving the growth of this up-and-coming franchise that is utilizing data sets for an outside the box gamification fitness experience for the growing niche of female-focused training. You'll learn from Josh Cherry on this episode how Delta Life Fitness uses a digital leaderboard in the lobby to harness the social contagion factor for their female members to engage inside the four walls and create the emotional hook to make better choices in the other 23 hours of their day. You'll also learn some of the biggest lessons that Josh experienced firsthand in growing Delta Life Fitness from a hot asphalt parking lot to just a few years later having multiple successful facilities nationwide, what are the three pillars of gamification success for all studios to deploy, how the utilization of private Facebook groups is shifting customer expectations when it comes to real human connection, and why Josh believes that a digital assessment for posture and client intake is pivotal to convert a new member into a lifelong customer. With all the technology solutions out there that claim to "gamify" the fitness studio experience, what are the most powerful actions that leading-edge facilities are taking through technology? The answer to that question and much more takeaways for club owners, operators, and fitness pros in this episode with Josh Cherry. About Josh Cherry Josh Cherry is the Director of Franchising and CEO and Co-founder at Delta Life Fitness: a women’s only group training workout segmented into intervals of cardiovascular and strength training. By incorporating the science of the female metabolism, Delta Life’s training is specifically designed to maintain a target zone that stimulates metabolism and increases energy. Josh spent almost 14 years in the Marine corps before helping co-found this female-focused boutique studio and graduated from Texas A&M university. Led by skilled trainers, participants use a variety of equipment including TRX suspension training, free weights, and battle ropes, burning up to 900 calories including after-burn. The results are more energy, visible toning, weight loss and extra calorie burn post-workout. Women throughout the United States are seeing the changes, both physically and mentally. As Delta Life Fitness grows, they continue to look for franchisees to assist with their expansion. Listen To Episode 041 As Josh Uncovers Why Josh believes that most colleges prepare Club Owners to be "perfection-minded" that hurts them Understanding the real definition of "gamification" in the fitness industry How to use data sets to make female fitness a truly enhanced experience Why having gamification data through automated technology (zero touch from the clients) can up engagement Understanding the key pillars of gamification that prove member success at Delta Life Fitness: Steps (lifestyle) Water (lifestyle) Sleep (lifestyle) Heart Rate (training specific) How habit tracking will yield not only the optimal results for weight loss, but also when used in a virtual coaching program, will give more revenue opportunities to fitness professionals and clubs How a private Facebook group can radically transform the engagement in a group fitness environment Why Josh believes that having a digital assessment for posture and client intake is pivotal to convert a new member to a lifelong customer What is the mindset of a fitness studio owner when looking at new technology solutions How the use of a leaderboard in the lobby of a studio can tap into social contagion Understanding the personality types of our female focused exercisers: what do they want and why What it really takes to maintain long-term success using technology as a fitness studio owner What all fitness professional get to pay attention to for fitness technology in 2018 Top 3 Takeaways From The Show Josh reminds operators and fitness professionals that when it comes to choosing technology to gamify your facility's experience, in order to transcend overwhelm you must keep it simple: know what makes you different, and find one or two really great things that allows you to gamify the process for your niche clientele. Accept that it may not work perfectly the first time and that you may have to revamp a few times to learn what works best. It's not just about people and is not just about technology, you get to accept that it will take time to find the balance between the two. When it comes to the moving the needle of profit through gamification, knowing exactly the type of member you are serving and exactly how you want to serve them is paramount. Josh believes whether you use technology or not, the gamification model has to be driven from specificity to succeed.. As the technology around fitness and medical services continue to grow, Josh speaks his truth that the days of trainers and doctors only working face-to-face with clients are about to be a thing of the past. Gamification is one of the necessary components of a bigger ecosystem that will provide apps for a mobile experience that is 100% seamless and based on the data of biometrics. This will allow the professionals to monitor us, the end-users, without us frenetically monitoring ourselves. In the same regard of enhanced medical and fitness service delivery models we also know that the intention of saving people time, money, and delivering better health through new technology will always be more powerful than just the technology itself. Power Quotes From Josh "College almost prepares us to be perfection minded, whereas in the Marine Corps, we have to get the job done today with what we have. A good plan executed violently today is better than a perfect plan executed two weeks from now." - Josh Cherry on the Fitness + Technology Podcast "Successful fitness gamification has to be twofold, both inside the four walls of the club and in what's going on the other 23 hours that you're not in the gym." - Josh Cherry on the Fitness + Technology Podcast "We've decided that at Delta LIfe Fitness we do not serve the 8 to 80 men, women, and children. We know exactly who we serve and we spend all of our time trying to identify the needs of our clients and building a program specifically designed to maximize the metabolism of our Delta Life Fitness ladies. We don't want to train everyone, we're building one training program for one specific person and by doing that we can really serve that one person well." - Josh Cherry on the Fitness + Technology Podcast Resources Mentioned From Josh Josh Cherry on LinkedIn Delta Life Fitness on the web Delta Life on Facebook Delta Life Fitness on Twitter Nudge Coach Go-Giver Book Nutrino App Delta Life Fitness: the "Go To" Gym for Women Looking to Tone Up and Get in Shape NPE: A Marine Corps pilot and a draftsman grow from park bootcamps with 5 people to a MILLION DOLLAR business with 850 clientsprocess and fitness FTP Episode # 018 w/ Nudge Coach Co-Fouder, Mac Gambill CBI Magazine: Delat Life Fitness Delta Life Fitness on YouTube MYZONE InBody Assessment Tools Gretchen Rubin: Social Contagion Bobby Cappuccio: Fitness + Technology Podcast Episode 027 Thanks To Our Outstanding Sponsors Bryan O’Rourke and his family of companies including Vedere Ventures, Integerus Advisors, and many more.
