Chapter 1 What's Leadership and Self-Deception Book by The Arbinger InstituteLeadership and Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box is a business and self-help book written by the Arbinger Institute. It was first published in 2000 and has become a popular resource for leaders and individuals seeking to improve their leadership skills and relationships with others. The book presents the concept of self-deception and how it can hinder personal and professional growth. It explores the idea that when we are "in the box," we view others as objects or obstacles to our own goals, rather than as individuals with their own needs and desires. This mindset leads to destructive behaviors and negative outcomes in our interactions and relationships. The authors use a fictional story to illustrate these concepts, following a newly appointed executive who struggles with leadership issues and personal conflicts. Throughout the narrative, the book provides insights and practical strategies for overcoming self-deception and adopting a more positive approach to leadership.Leadership and Self-Deception offers a powerful message about the importance of self-awareness and empathy in leadership. It highlights the significance of treating others with respect, understanding, and genuine care, ultimately fostering better relationships and achieving greater success in both personal and professional spheres. The book has been praised for its engaging storytelling style and practical advice, and it continues to be widely recommended for leaders, managers, and individuals looking to enhance their leadership abilities and create healthier relationships in their personal and professional lives.Chapter 2 Is Leadership and Self-Deception Book A Good BookMany readers consider "Leadership and Self-Deception" by The Arbinger Institute to be a highly valuable and insightful book. It is a compelling and thought-provoking exploration of leadership and personal accountability. The book tells a fictional story about a man named Tom, who joins a newly acquired company as a high-level manager. Tom is initially excited about his new role and believes that he can make a positive impact on the organization. However, he soon realizes that the company is struggling, and the employees are demotivated and uncooperative.Tom learns about an unusual concept known as "self-deception." According to the book, self-deception occurs when individuals see the world and their actions in a distorted way, often blaming others for their failures or justifying harmful behavior. The book explains that self-deception can prevent people from fully understanding and connecting with others, leading to ineffective leadership and organizational dysfunction.Through a series of encounters, Tom discovers that he is deeply entrenched in self-deception. He recognizes that he has been seeing others as objects and not as individuals with their own needs, desires, and aspirations. In this episode, Steve Fretzin and Ariana Tadler discuss:How your business card can play into your personal and professional brand. Top challenges for lawyers today. The pros and cons of multiple methods of communication. The 3 C's of professionalism. Key Takeaways:Have a business card with a QR code. It helps to communicate and connect with more people and keeps you memorable. Time management is one of the biggest challenges for lawyers today. In today's world, the sense of attention people have is much shorter than before due to devices and constant notifications. But time management is critical for lawyers. It is not rude to write down notes from meetings about follow-up things or to-do items. You want to make sure to be able to follow through with anything that was talked about in the meeting. Early is on time. Being on time (early) to meetings is the easiest way to begin to show professionalism. Being late to meetings, especially without apology or reason, will chip away at your credibility. Show Notes How do emotional intelligence (known as EQ) and leadership go together? What does EQ have to do with leading in the military? How does EQ line up with scripture? Noble Gibbens, also known as the EQ Gangster, joins me on the podcast to answer these questions. An Oklahoma-born West Point graduate who served in the U.S. Army in the 82nd Airborne Division, Noble combined his entrepreneurial spirit and experience with his passion for emotional intelligence to become a certified emotional intelligence practitioner, corporate speaker & trainer, and executive leadership coach. After growing up in a home where he “learned absolutely nothing about conflict resolution” and realizing his emotional dysfunction in his own home as an adult, Noble met with a counselor and began his emotional fitness journey. In this episode, he defines emotional intelligence, shares experiences with leadership in and out of the military context, talks about David and other biblical examples of emotional intelligence, and more. Check out these resources mentioned in Noble's interview: Emotional Intelligence 2.0 by Dr. Travis Bradberry and Dr. Jean Greaves EQ-i 2.0, an online self-rating assessment tool EQ Gangster podcast, Episode #273: Dr. Brooks Gibbs, Emotional Resilience in Teens & Adults, and Creating Unstoppable Humans Changes That Heal: Four Practical Steps to a Happier, Healthier You by Dr. Henry Cloud Boundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No to Take Control of Your Life by Dr. Henry Cloud, Dr. John Townsend Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box by The Arbinger Institute Running on Empty: Overcome Your Childhood Emotional Neglect by Jonice Webb, PhD, with Christine Musello Running on Empty No More: Transform Your Relationships With Your Partner, Your Parents and Your Children by Jonice Webb, PhD As you listen to this conversation with Noble, here are a few questions to ponder in your personal time, with a small group, or with a mentor: How would you define emotional intelligence? Think back to your own upbringing. How did your community, family, etc. talk about emotions? How has that impacted your understanding of emotional intelligence now? To pose Noble's question mentioned in this episode: How often do anxiety and frustrations, motivation, impulses, fear, and distress affect and impact your decision-making? Having listened to Noble explain the impact emotional intelligence can have on working relationships, what can improve within your own workplace? We talk about Jesus as the biblical model of being unoffendable, a trait that indicates high emotional intelligence. What can we learn from His example?

As entrepreneurs and investors, our time is by far our most valuable asset and often freedom of time is our motivation for being an entrepreneur in the first place! Unfortunately, accomplishing the cherished time freedom that we long for is often easier said than done. Luckily for us, today's guest has spent his life uncovering the secrets of how to lead an organization without burdening your time, and he shares these secrets with us in this episode! Today we have Dr. Tim Elmore, the Founder and CEO of Growing Leaders, which is an Atlanta-based non-profit organization created to develop emerging leaders. He is the author of The 8 Paradoxes of Great Leadership, and has spoken to over 500,000 leaders in business, universities, athletic teams, and non-profits, including The Home Depot, Chick-fil-A, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Stanford University to name a few! In this episode, we are going to discuss… The powerful lessons that Tim learned through his close relationship and numerous interviews with Truett Cathy, Founder of Chick-fil-A. How Tim went from the Doer of his company to the Dumper of his endless tasks, then to the Delegator of tasks, and eventually transcended into the Developer of new leaders. Tim's 4-pronged framework for developing a teammate or mentee to the point that you can fully pass on your responsibilities to them. How you can effectively address drama in your organization and ensure that it won't be a problem in the future. Which cultural trends will allow you to best incentivize young team members? Why Tim's hiring and onboarding process ensures the cultural fit of newly hired talent. How Tim discovered his revolutionary formula: More Time + Less People = Overall Greater Impact. If you are an entrepreneur, business owner, or leader, the highly researched and tested insights that Tim shares in this episode will be invaluable to creating your ideal business culture and personal lifestyle.

My guest today for the Mads Singers Management Podcast, is Renata Porter, the Founder of Renata Porter Limited and a motivational speaker. Renata calls herself a "serial fixer" because she is the one people call when their teams or managers are not working how they intend to. She also helps small business owners and non-profit youth sports clubs accomplish their goals. Renata and her team's in-depth knowledge and experience with their "people focus" help clients take intentional and meaningful approaches to lead in their respective fields and organizations.Contrary to popular belief, managers, business owners, or any person who manages people or has people report to them perform better when not in their area of expertise. When people are in their area of expertise, they tend to interfere with the natural flow of things and micromanage their staff or processes. An essential aspect of being a manager or business leader is not about the perks, power, or money you take home. Still, it's about being able to communicate with your employees so you can get them motivated to work by putting their best performance forward. Take the time to get feedback from them. If they don't give you feedback, consider it a lesson learned, as it will quickly tell you which employee is having problems and needs helps or who has something to say. However, this doesn't mean you have to be their best friend but rather have a good enough relationship with them to be told if they need to render extra hours or pick up some slack if they are falling behind at work.As a manager and business owner, you need to be aware of how you approach people because not everyone is on the same wavelength as you: some are naturally more inclined to start independently. In contrast, others may prefer to be given direction. While some fear that management styles may change or revert to their old ways, I don't believe that will happen because you will encounter fewer of those kinds of problems when you hire well. We cannot communicate enough. It's okay to share a lot because communicating effectively isn't just about talking but also listening, clarifying, understanding, and not jumping into decisions or conclusions hastily.Key Learning Points: Mads says that one of his favorite things is when people work in an area/expertise that they don't know well because it allows them to work more efficiently than when working on their area of expertise. After all, they tend to interfere with the processes. - 03:18 Renata says that many managers tend to get sucked in the "doing" part instead of focusing on the leadership roles - 03:45 Renata says that she is the kind of person who will sit down and discover why someone feels a certain way with their tasks or projects. - 05:22 Renata believes that business owners, managers, or anyone who handles and manages people should connect with them on some level. - 07:09 Mads says that the most important thing a manager will do is build relationships with their staff. - 08:30 Renata says that most companies don't spend time training someone to be a manager, but when they do, their employees' training is high, making it harder for employees to relate to. - 10:14 Mads says that managers and business owners need to develop their staff as the people they will need for the future- 13:57 Mads says that companies should have a more holistic approach when it comes to planning where the whole organization is involved - 15:37 Renata says that the perception of people in management is often skewed. That's why it's essential to build a bridge between management and the staff. - 21:32 Mads shares that networking is the best way to find the best people before you hire them - 37:19 Resources Mentioned:Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box by the Arbinger InstituteConnect with Renata:LinkedInWebsiteNon-profit Sports Club WebsiteEmailInstagram

Do you struggle navigating conflict to a successful resolution? Does engaging in conflict leave you running in the other direction? Are you ready for a strategy to master the art of conflict resolution? Conflict is naturally present in our lives, but most people are unaware that conflict can be resolved elegantly. How? David T. S. Wood shares his foolproof conflict resolution strategy in this episode of My Extra Mile. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... The three primary responses to conflict The house of a thousand mirrors Leadership and Self-Deception: Get out of the box The importance of the right mindset LEADERS: David's foolproof conflict resolution strategy A second acronym for everyday conflict The three primary responses to conflict “The larger conflicts that we see consuming the world today are simply reflections of the smaller conflicts that consume us each day.” — David David views conflict as something that naturally occurs when you live or spend time with other people. It's when our wishes, desires, or needs don't get met or matched with the person that we're with we spiral into conflict. There are three primary ways that people respond to conflict: Avoidance: Most people avoid conflict and say, “I'm fine.” Aggression: People who are in conflict give in to emotional responses such as anger. Resolution: When people seek forgiveness, say “I'm sorry”, etc. David LOVES conflict. Why? Because after it's resolved, a deeper relationship develops. Our experience with the world is determined by moment-to-moment feelings and interpretations. Humans are story-making machines. We experience the world as we are, and the world treats us in accordance with that—however we show up. Get out of your box We all have a box that we carry everywhere. When we are closed in our box, we see everyone else as the problem. We treat people as objects (i.e. road rage). We are dehumanizing the person in that situation. Instead, if you're angry, make an attempt to humanize the other person. How does that help you react differently? When we are in our box, we push other people into their box. They become guarded, closed, and defensive—in a millisecond. We can't get out of our box by trying to change or cope with others. Running away won't help. Implementing new skills or changing your behavior won't help when you're self-focused. Instead, you have to focus your attention on others. When we're outside of our box we take personal responsibility. We want to help. We are open, connected, fascinated, and curious. We project a different energy and we feel differently. Connect starts with intention. Are you projecting connection and intention when resolving conflict? LEADERS: David's foolproof conflict resolution strategy David termed the acronym LEADERS: Lead with intention: Conflicts typically occur from a misunderstanding or projection of other anger. So you must lead with intention towards the outcome that you want. If you're still angry you're not ready for conflict resolution. Explore timing: Is this a good time? If they say “no”, you must respect that. Set a time where you can reconnect. The right thing said at the wrong time is still the wrong thing. Ask them to go first: Active listening is powerful. When you actively listen, your opinion CAN be changed by the other person. Don't interrupt: Even if it takes 45 minutes to hear someone's side of the story, let them say everything that needs to be said. Explain your side of the story: Don't expect anything to change or the person to agree with your side of the story. Understand you may not get an apology. But the intention should be to resolve the conflict for yourself—despite the outcome for the other party. Resist the urge to gossip: If you're whispering to other people intentionally, you're not resolving the conflict—you're perpetuating it. Stay true to your intentions and stay on high ground. You can ask for help and guidance if you're doing it to reach a solution without using names and the exact scenario. Always talk about people as if they're standing next to you. Today's Coaching Through Stories episode features guest Chip Huth who has been an active member of the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) for the past 28 years. Currently, Chip serves as a Major for KCPD's Traffic Division, the State of Missouri’s defensive tactics subject matter expert, and as a senior consultant with Arbinger Institute. Chip has planned, coordinated, and executed over 2500 high-risk tactical operations and takes the lessons he learned on the force and shares them through powerful stories and speaking engagements. In today's podcast, Chip discusses how he shifted his mindset to become a high performing leader in the field, at home, and as a father. Three Key Points: Leading with an outward mindset allows a leader to support others and be open to new solutions and possibilities. Having more research-based training is ideal so we can see what really works. From the outward mindset perspective, leaders should incentivize members of the team not based on what they did but based on what other people were able to accomplish because of what they did. Episode Highlights: Chip reflects on some of his life’s transformative experiences. Chip talks about his experience leading the Street Crimes Tactical Enforcement Team for a decade and why he feels it’s one of his life’s defining moments. Chip points out what it means to “grow where you are planted.” There are two kinds of people in an organization: the person in charge and the person that knows what’s going on. What’s inside Chip that has enabled him to look within? How Chip handles missteps and inconsistencies by becoming vulnerable. Chip discusses a moment that he defines as his “tipping point.” Chip shares how leaders can help their teams exercise discretion. Chip shares concrete tips leaders can try to lead with an outward mindset. Chip identifies ways that leaders can make relationships better and what the acronym S.A.M. (See People, Adjust Efforts, Measure Impact) is all about. Special guests, friends, and sponsors, John Scott Sutherland and Shandel Sutherland, of Sutherland DDS, joined us for a discussion about the book Leadership & Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box by The Arbinger Institute. In this last part of our conversation, we focus on the 4 different boxes we can be in. The box is a scary place to be. When we are in the box towards someone we are the one who misbehaves. We make the other person out to be worse than they really are. We look for evidence that backs up the story we are telling ourselves. We must create evidence in order to remain in our self-deception. It's scary because as hate rises, we know we are not treating people like humans and we do it anyway.THE 4 BOXES OF SELF-DECEPTIONThe 4 boxes of self-deception are: The Better Than Box: Thinking you are better than others. The I Deserve Box: Thinking you deserve certain things. The Must Be Seen As Box: Thinking that you must be seen a certain way or as a certain kind of person. The Worse Than Box: Thinking that your own problems are worse than anyone else's, so this is why you can treat people a certain way. You can operate in or out of the box. If you operate inside the box, then you see everything as a problem that someone else created. If you operate outside the box, then you will treat people as humans. FINAL THOUGHTSFirst of all, read the book. It's Leadership & Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box by The Arbinger Institute. We highly recommend it. Next, think about the relationships you have with people. Are you in the box in some of those relationships? Get out of the box with people by building relationships with them. If you can't build a relationship with someone you're in the box with, then build relationships with the people who are friends with them. Try to understand the person you are in the box with. What is their story? Where are they coming from? Lastly, remember that we shouldn't be correcting anyone unless we have taken the time to communicate and teach. Communication and teaching happen when we have listened and learned about people and their world. We can listen and learn by building relationships. We build relationships when we are out of the box. You have no business correcting someone you are in the box with.It has to start with seeing the other person as truly human. Send us your questions and your thoughts. Special guests, friends, and sponsors, John Scott Sutherland and Shandel Sutherland, of Sutherland DDS, joined us for a discussion about the book Leadership & Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box by The Arbinger Institute. In Part 2 of our conversation, we talked more about what being in the box means and how to get out of it. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE IN THE BOX?First, being in the box of self-deception means you have betrayed yourself. You don't act in ways that you believe are appropriate or are in line with your values. When you are in the box, you don't see another person's humanity. Instead, you only see the wall of the box you're in. Being inside the box keeps you emotionally disconnected from other people. YOU'RE IN THE BOX. NOW WHAT?You have to start with admitting that you are in the box. Once you identify that you're in the box, you will start to understand how you got there and what to do to get out. It's easy to get comfortable inside our boxes. The more words we speak, the more decorations we put into our box. If you say, “I'm never doing that,” or “That person is so bad,” it's hard to get yourself out of that box. When the person you have criticized then does something good for you, you can't let them out of the box, right? That would be betraying yourself twice. You will have betrayed your values and then betrayed your righteousness in being inside the box. SELF-JUSTIFICATION AND COLLUSIONSelf-justification and collusion go hand-in-hand. When we justify ourselves, we point fingers and blame others for our problems. We deceive ourselves with collusion in order to continue our self-justification. We invite people to behave badly so that we can justify our own bad behaviors. It's pretty scary because the behavior we say that we dislike in the other person is the behavior we provoke in order to justify our negative view of that person. It is a form of self-deception that keeps us in the box. HOW TO GET OUT OF THE BOXIt takes hard work and conscious thinking to get out of the boxes we are in. It also takes humility. We must be willing to admit that we are wrong and no one wants to do that. It's hard. It is much easier to point fingers and blame others for our problems. The first thing you should do is ask yourself what you should do for this person. What can you do to treat this person as a fellow human being? As soon as your brain thinks of that humane response, then do it. Yes, you could yell at that person or hit that person. You could do that if they were only an object to you. Do what makes that person human to you. Send us your questions and your thoughts. Let's continue this conversation. Special guests, friends, and sponsors, John Scott Sutherland and Shandel Sutherland, of Sutherland DDS, joined us for a discussion about the book Leadership & Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box by The Arbinger Institute. In Part 1 of our conversation, we explain what self-deception is and talk about the many ways we deceive ourselves on a daily basis.WHAT IS SELF-DECEPTION?Self-deception is the action or practice of allowing oneself to believe that a false or unvalidated feeling, idea, or situation is true (dictionary.com). One of the ways this manifests itself is by not doing something we know we should do and then justifying our inaction to ourselves. When this occurs, we start to blame the people around us for the problems we perceive. It's resisting the possibility that we are part of the problem.ARE YOU INSIDE THE BOX OF SELF-DECEPTION?These arguments you have with others inside your own head are like putting yourself inside a box. No one but you can know what is going on inside your head. Just because the other person doesn't jump up to get the baby doesn't mean they're lazy or a bad person. Maybe they are a heavy sleeper and can't even hear the baby. Isn't it true that you can get up to take care of the baby too? A civil conversation at another time can help the situation improve. Self-deception causes us to work and live as if trapped inside a box. We don't see the reality that is around us. (arbingerinstitute.com). It's easy to identify the problems outside of ourselves. But can we get to real solutions if we always are outside the problem and we are pointing fingers at all the ways it should change? This book is empowering because you realize that you can't change other people. You only have the power to change yourself. HOW SELF-DECEPTION OBJECTIFIES OTHERSYou cannot believe something and behave differently. Once you're in the box of self-deception, you make the other person an object. They lose their humanity to you. When they become an object, you can justify yourself and your actions. You can mistreat them. It is easy to belittle people, treat them poorly, and feel justified in doing it when they have lost their humanity. In the end, you don't honor yourself and your values.Giving the silent treatment is an example of self-deception. Think of times in your life when you weren't outright aggressive, but turned silent instead. Did you feel justified in your silence and maybe that you were being kind in not saying something hurtful? Did it feel better to be silent? Did you feel a little self-righteous? We want to hear from you. Do you recognize the times you are deceiving yourself? Does it happen at home or at work? I've moved away from Facebook so I hope you'll join me inside this new community. Hopefully, it'll be more interactive. All it needs now is YOU. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- My pondering began with Bible study. Not a big shock since you already know how important Faith is in my life. I'd heard the story my entire life, sitting in the pew as a little boy listening to old preachers tell the story recorded in Luke 15. The story of the prodigal son. As a little kid I sat there wondering why this son got a wild hair to confront his dad and make such a bold request, but mostly I wondered why the father gave him what he wanted. The adults in my life wouldn't have so indulged me, I thought. He takes the money and whatever else he got and left home. That baffled me, too. I'd never had the urge to run away from home. Well, not for long, any way. There were days, you know? But I figured I had it pretty well. And that's where it started for me. Wondering why this son didn't realize how good things were. Of course, I knew the end of the story. I know in advance how bad his life got. Mostly I wondered how long he was in that far country doing whatever he was big enough to do. I wondered why he had to lose everything before he gained clarity that things back home were really great. That was likely my first serious pondering about delusion and my introduction to the fact - yes, FACT - that every human being is capable of self-deception. Seeing things inaccurately. Believing things that aren't true. Some months I put my own sermon about this story online, but I approached it from the perspective of the father, not the son. The father, by the way, did not deceive himself. He was seeing clearly the entire time. And thankfully, his clarity served both his sons. Self-deception and delusion is an everyday conversation in my work. Twenty years ago I bought and read a book, captivated by the joining of 2 topics I was interested in, leadership and self-deception. "Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box" by The Arbinger Institute. Leaders of every ilk can be prone to self-deception. But leaders aren't unique. It's a complex issue and our quest to simplify things likely contributes to our delusion or false assumptions. We like neat and tidy things and most things aren't neat or tidy. Fast forward and the topic of delusion and self-deception intersect with another conversation point, addiction. In my executive and leadership coaching work, I often have conversations with clients whose families and lives have been horribly impacted by addiction. From people abusing prescription medications, to people not abusing - but people taking prescribed medications that have completely altered their personality, to people abusing alcohol and even people consumed by gambling or other addictions. Almost weekly I have a conversation with people whose family is struggling to help a member of their clan get out of the pit. They tell stories of how the person just can't seem to think or see things accurately. Fogged over with chemicals that have impaired their ability, I'll often listen as they recite how smart, funny, and engaging the person was before they surrendered to some form of chemical dependency. Once in a while I hear about recovery. Like the prodigal son, it never happens quickly. In most cases, many years have elapsed before the self-deception and addiction are overcome. Success stories are both rare and lengthy. I've yet to encounter a story of somebody who recovered quickly. The downward spiral is long and destructive. It seems it must get very bad before there's even hope of it getting better. I never understood it. I still don't.
Ken Thompson is a Principal with AlignOrg Solutions based out of Salt Lake City, a team of organizational design and change management partners. His team helps clients clarify existing and new strategies, optimize organizational set up, and implement systems that drive growth. Ken is also a former Apache helicopter pilot with the United States Army and remains a member of the Army Reserves, serving as the Deputy Brigade Commander for his unit in Scottsdale, AZ. Since his transition several years ago, Ken’s leadership roles have crossed industries ranging from the Department of Defense logistics and supply chain, to the fashion and apparel industry. He has championed significant organization change, created operational excellence, and implemented leadership development and employee betterment programs, leading to significant overall success. In this conversation, we discuss Ken's transition into a COO role immediately after his active duty service, and how being introduced to his team for the first time as an, "Apache Commander," set an unwanted tone for his leadership style and approach to managing civilian teams in a new environment. We talk about the impact such a perception can have, and the work he did early-on to reset peoples' expectations of what it means to hire a leader fresh from military service. In this ‘Ask the Frog’ episode, Rachel is joined by Dr Riaz Jetha, Dr Jamie Wyllie and Dr Jo Scrivens, some of the Red Whale Lead. Manage. Thrive! Course authors and presenters. We chat about how the pressures of our duty doctor days can turn us from rational human beings into monsters, where our inner chimp is let loose and we end up behaving in a manner which surprises even us. We discuss simple techniques to help manage our chimps and our behaviour and talk about how important it is to give ourselves space, to show compassion to ourselves and others – treating people as human beings rather than just another demand on our time. Connecting with others during the day, taking regular breaks and seeing what small things we can re-order in our work can help, as well as recognising that managing our own emotions is part and parcel of being a healthcare professional. Thanks for giving me a few minutes to share a couple of thoughts about leadership and taking care of business. I found an interesting book that has some ideas worth consideration. In Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box, produced by the Arbinger Institute and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers in 2002, I discovered what I think is an important truth for everyone but especially for leaders. It starts with a simple but rather strange proposition. Self-deception determines my experience in every aspect of life. There you go. Let me share it again. I don't know for sure about you but I personally find the assertion very strange. Self-deception determines my experience in every aspect of life. Okay, I'll move on. The arguement works like this. 1. An act contrary to what I feel I should do for another is an act of “self-betrayal.” 2. When I betray myself, I begin to see the world in a way that justifies my self-betrayal. 3. When I see a self-justifying world, my view of reality becomes distorted. 4. When I betray myself, I enter the box. 5. Over time, certain boxes become characteristic of me, and I carry them with me. 6. By being in the box, I provoke others to be in the box with me. 7. In the box, we invite mutual mistreatment and obtain mutual justification. We collude in giving each other reason to stay in the box.

In the box, we invite mutual mistreatment and obtain mutual justification. We collude in giving each other reason to stay in the box. It might seem that if others are also in the box, my being in the box may not be all that big of a deal. It's a state I can easily justify or at least rationalize, since everyone is doing it. So what doesn't work in the box? Why do I need to get out and stay out? 1. While I am in the box, there is little hope that others will change their behavior, attitudes or perceptions of me and of their world. I am and remain their justification for maintaining the status quo. I am the everyone in everyone is doing it. 2. In the box, doing my best to "cope" with others is limited by my perspective. I do things and behave in ways that are contrary to what I feel I should do. It doesn't feel right but I think I have no real choice, no reasonable alternative. It's nothing personal, it's just business. It's a dog eat dog world, either I get the bear or the bear gets me, that's just how it goes. 3. Leaving the box is not an option, or at least that's the way it seems to me. Sure, I could get out of the box but I definitely don't want to be out there by myself. Unless everyone is leaving the box or nearly everyone is leaving, I will just stay in the box where it is safe, even though it does not feel quite right to me. It's just business. 4. I know that in theary we could all sit down and talk this over but that is certainly not going to happen. Communicating about how we feel and what would be the right thing to do is just not how to take care of business. As I said, it's business and talking about feelings, personal values and what we truly believe is just not how business is done. What would people think about me if I started talking about all that warm and fuzzy stuff? It's for sure I'm not interested in finding out. 5. Even if I thought climbing out of the box was a good idea, and I don't, I would need a whole new skill set. I am a business person and not the warm and fuzzy type. I have to focus on getting the job done and not on all that touchy feely stuff. I don't have either the time or interest it would take for implementing those new skills and techniques. It's just not me. 6. Changing my behavior is not something that is either needed or wanted by me or by those I do business with. We are all comfortable in the box or perhaps only think we are comfortable in there. My point is that it doesn't matter either way. It's how business is done and everyone is doing it. There is not much point in thinking about getting out of the box anyway. I have been in there so long that I don't think I could get out if I wanted to.

Conflict is inevitable in relationships, with teams, at work, and in life. My guest today is an expert in compassionate leadership and conflict resolution. Nate Regier is an author, speaker, psychologist, and the CEO of a consulting company called Next Element. He shares with us how his unique upbringing shaped his view of compassion and drove him to develop a methodology to better solve conflict without casualties. He explains what the compassion cycle is and how we can resolve even the most difficult conflicts at work and at home. And, when we do this, our teams. Key Takeaways: [4:54] Nate’s family did missionary work in Africa, which led to him living there and attending an ambassador school that represented 35 nationalities. He knows firsthand what it is like to exist in a culture with different perspectives and languages. [7:40] Nate has had to reconcile the two driving forces inside him of being both very competitive and goal-oriented versus the ethnic setting of pacificism and peace. [13:43] Nate and his team started Next Element when they saw a great need for a model that encouraged mental health mixed with productivity in the workplace. [16:45] We often think that conflict needs to be managed, mediated, or reduced when it is simply just a gap between what we want and what we are experiencing. It is neither good or bad, but the gap takes on energy depending on how we assign and label it. At Next Element, Nate and his team look at what people do with the energy, and the psychological behavioral dynamic behind the gap. [18:04] Conflict becomes destructive when we bring our need to be justified in, along with the conditions of being okay that we put on each other. [24:04] It’s the uncomfortable conversations inside the room that get messy, but these are also the ones that truly address and solve conflict. [25:49] A compassion cycle is made up of three core skills that people can learn to apply and manifest compassion: openness, resourcefulness, and persistence. [27:37] A common conflict in the workplace is unmet expectations. When the team has developed a safe environment, they can begin to be curious about what is at stake, how both parties are feeling, and the true emotions attached to the situation. [43:12] Nate’s new book, Seeing People Through is about looking through the lens of dealing with individual differences in an authentic manner. [44:58] LinkedIn is one example of a company Nate feels is doing it right in the area of team development and conflict resolution. When the market moves as fast and Donald Trump tweets, how should we think about money in the digital age? Jennifer talks with psychologist and behavioral finance expert Dr. Daniel Crosby about his life story and how he has built a career helping both individual investors and institutional clients understand themselves and the psychology of the market. For Daniel Crosby, the beginning of the story started with an ending. Daniel tells Jennifer the story of how he came into the world on the day of his grandfather’s passing and how that has driven him to live his life to its fullest potential. An important part of leading a rich and full life is to always be learning. Daniel talks about how his love for learning and how his academic education laid the groundwork for developing his interpersonal skills which were key to his success later in life. As the son of an investment manager and advisor, the stability and comfort of his father’s profession was an alluring one. But after serving a mission through his church in the Philippines and helping a close friend whether an eating disorder, Daniel shifted his academic path towards helping people. How do some people with so little manage to find joy in their lives? Jennifer gets Daniel to flex his clinical psychology skills and asks him why some people blessed with great privileges can’t seem to find the same happiness of some people living a simpler or rougher life. He also talks about his own success and his approach to being happy. What drove Daniel to fly straight into graduate school? Jennifer asks Daniel a bit more about his trajectory towards becoming an impactful force in people’s lives. He talks about the value of therapy and why building a strong relationship between therapist and client beats out any high-level degree or specialized school of thought. Misconceptions about therapy and the therapeutic process are a dime a dozen. Daniel does some mythbusting and distills some of what he’s learned as a therapist into some takeaways for listeners that they can use in their personal and professional lives. Whether it’s for work, in our relationships or just in our day-to-day lives, we all talk about ourselves. Jennifer and Daniel talk about why being able to talk about yourself and your feelings openly and authentically with a trusted professional is so important is our society. After being burnt out by individual therapy work, Daniel moved on to workplace-focused psychology work in Atlanta. While doing pre-employment assessments across the Deep South, he learned some hard truths about competence, wealth, meritocracy and the under-recognized value of general intelligence. You’re not that great. Daniel fills us in on one of the key moments of his journey to becoming an impact-maker: a 2011 TEDx talk in Huntsville, Alabama about 7 counter-intuitive truths for living a better and more meaningful life. This talk eventually turned into a self-published book of the same name (check out the links below). “Only as we accept our normality, are we able to build something that is better than normal.” Daniel talks about the central message of his book, the concept of overconfidence bias and how it keeps us back from achieving our fullest potential. In late 2009 – in the swell of the recession – Daniel set out on his own to get away from his rough day job. His new behaviorist economics consultancy called Nocturne Capital offers a wealth of services around the psychology of investment decision making. Jennifer asks the question on all of our minds: so how should we think about money? Daniel offers some of the insights he’s gathered over the years helping people understand and navigate financial markets. Daniel shares a couple tidbits with Jennifer but you can find all 10 of his investing commandments in his book The Laws of Wealth, named the best investment book of 2017. If you’ve been listening to this week’s episode so far, you’ll know that Dr. Crosby is a man of quick wit. Jennifer asks Daniel where he gets his funny bone from and how it finds its way into his work. Validation and criticism some in equal spades in today’s digital word. Jennifer asks Daniel for some advice for everyone about how to engage with the digital dimensions of our fast-paced contemporary world, as well as where you can find Daniel online. Being a leader vs. being in charge is an important distinction to make. Whether you're a cleaning franchisor, a house cleaner, parent, clergyman, teacher, coach or boss. You may know Aaron Anastazi from his incredibly popular Superior Singing Method YouTube channel, where he's had millions of views and has helped untold numbers of people improve their singing voices. But what you may not know is that Aaron is also an actor, film producer, author, speaker and coach whose main goal in life, and what he's most passionate about, is helping people live fuller and freer lives. We were incredibly fortunate to have Aaron join us today to share his hard won success. Aaron hit a rough patch with his business back in 2011, so he had to pivot from his marketing plan of Google ads to something else. This is when e started giving away his content for free on his YouTube channel. Admittedly, Aaron was a bit hesitant to give away so much free and valuable stuff in the beginning, but that mindset of scarcity didn't sit well with him for long. He saw that his confident and trust-inspiring personality in those free videos helped to develop a huge following, and that's when things really started to blow up for him. Aaron knows that if his viewers appreciate what he gives them for free and if their lives and singing voices are changed for the better, then they'll be interested in the other resources he has to offer. “My goal now is not to sell any one product, it's to make a fan and create trust in somebody that I do really good work.” Aaron had to become a different person in order to make the Superior Singing Method a success. The turning point came when his coach asked him, “Who do you have to be in order to get the results that you want?” Aaron realized that grinding it out day after day and working hard wasn't enough, he had to shift his thinking in such a way that would lead him to getting the results he wanted. This search for success and improving himself led to Aaron's first book called ‘The Voice of Your Dreams: Turn Down the Voices of Limitation and Turn Up the Volume of Success.' It's written to teach others how to lead themselves in any area of their life they want success in. For his entire life, Aaron's been counseling people for free, and inspiring those around him. He never really saw the power that he had for himself because: “Oftentimes we're blind to our biggest strengths because we live inside of them and we just assume everyone has the same strengths.” Seeing his students improve their lives is invigorating for Aaron and it taps into his bigger value of wanting people to live fuller and freer lives. There was a year in Aaron's life where he found great success in his singing business, developed a wonderful relationship with his wife and wrote his book. He credits a few principles for this amazing year: “Faster, Slower” – after slowing everything down he became the most prolific he'd ever been and accomplished more than ever before. “It's either a hell yeah or it's a no” – this limits him to only the things he's truly excited about. “Steady plodding” – he likens himself to the tortoise in the old fable Tortoise and the Hare, so by committing to write two pages every day, 5 days per week, he was able to finish his manuscript in 6 months. “Completion” – commit to completing something no matter what, don't stop when it loses its luster. Finishing something grows confidence in your ability to complete tasks. Aaron has so much to share with the world, and you will absolutely get incredible value from this episode. SOME QUESTIONS I ASK: What process did he have to go through to be genuine and authentic on camera? How did he take his successful singing practice into a book that's about to launch? What was Aaron's path to speaking? How was Aaron able to get his business success, develop a great relationship and write the book all within one year? IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN: How Aaron's systematic style of teaching appeals to people and is why he has so many loyal followers. How you can get beyond your fear of public speaking. About the avatar he uses when he's speaking to the camera for his YouTube videos. How improv classes can play a big role in making better coaches and speakers.
