Send us Fan MailYou may have noticed, while driving down a street or highway, the proliferation of cameras on traffic lights and other structures.  Some of these cameras are recording your vehicle license plates and other features.  And in some instances, this data is being stored and made available both to government agencies and private parties.  For law enforcement, the aggregation of this data can be an incredibly powerful investigative tool, helping investigators to catalog a vehicle's—and therefore its driver's—historical patterns of movements and locations, as well as its likely future patterns.  But that power is exactly what concerns privacy rights activists like Chad Marlow, Senior Policy Counsel at the American Civil Liberties Union in New York, and Michael B. Soyfer, an Attorney at the Institute for Justice in Arlington, Virginia.  We caught up with them to discuss the implications of this powerful technology.

Andy is a director at Envirotecture, a long-time passive house advocate and former Australian Passive House Association board member — and he thinks the industry's obsession with beating its own numbers is costing builders money for no measurable gain.The core of the conversation is where the point of diminishing returns actually sits for high performance. Once a building is genuinely airtight, the model becomes predictable (you can't model a sieve) and that predictability is what lets you cut back everything else. Andy walks through the UK apartment work presented at the Passive House Conference where parts of the building are deliberately built worse than code because the form factor absorbs it, the concrete footings nobody needs to perfect, and the one thing you can never compromise on: condensation risk.Brian makes the same case from the other direction — that a decade of chasing certified air-tightness is what teaches you how much performance you can buy for far less. They get into the airtightness arms race between builders, the bloke who hit 0.06 and probably wasted his weekends doing it, achieving 2 ACH cheaply through the plasterboard line, and whether a tiered certification pathway would drag the volume market across the line. No Mel or Sarah this week, so the boys have been left unsupervised with the Talking Pictures TV schedules. What could possibly go wrong? With three weeks of cinematic treasures to choose from, Scott, Hal, Daniel and this week's host, Gareth, have each been rummaging through the listings in search of something they think deserves a place on your watchlist.   Scott has selected Tomorrow at Ten, Lance Comfort's cracking 1963 British thriller starring John Gregson, Alec Clunes and a splendidly sinister Robert Shaw. Shaw plays Marlow, a kidnapper whose scheme involving the young son of a wealthy businessman comes with a particularly nasty ticking deadline. John Gregson is the detective faced with finding the boy before time runs out. Lean, tense and running at around 80 minutes, it is the sort of economical British thriller that gets on with the job without feeling the need to hang around for another half-hour explaining itself.   Daniel, meanwhile, has gone for Green for Danger, Sidney Gilliat's marvellous 1946 murder mystery set in a wartime hospital during the Blitz. When a patient dies on the operating table, the arrival of Scotland Yard's Inspector Cockrill, played with enormous relish by Alastair Sim, suggests that something rather more sinister than medical misfortune may be involved. Trevor Howard, Sally Gray, Rosamund John and Leo Genn are among the suspects in a film adapted from Christianna Brand's novel and combining a proper murder mystery with a wonderfully dry streak of British humour.   And apparently one Alastair Sim film wasn't enough.   Hal has selected The Green Man, the gloriously dark 1956 comedy in which Sim plays Harry Hawkins, an outwardly respectable watchmaker who has found a rather more lucrative sideline as a professional assassin. Unfortunately for Hawkins, his latest carefully arranged murder keeps being interrupted by George Cole's enthusiastic vacuum cleaner salesman. Add Terry-Thomas, Jill Adams, Raymond Huntley, Dora Bryan, Arthur Lowe and Richard Wattis to the proceedings and you have ninety minutes of beautifully controlled comic chaos. Directed by Robert Day and written by Frank Launder and Sidney Gilliat, it also gives this week's choices a neat little connection with Green for Danger.   Finally, Gareth has decided that Britain simply isn't big enough for him this week and has gone continental with Georges Franju's extraordinary Les Yeux sans visage, better known as Eyes Without a Face. Made in 1960 and starring Pierre Brasseur, Alida Valli and Edith Scob, Franju's French horror classic concerns a brilliant surgeon desperately trying to restore the face of his disfigured daughter. Unfortunately, his chosen method of doing so makes even the most questionable private cosmetic clinic look reassuringly respectable. Beautiful, eerie and genuinely unsettling, it mixes fairy-tale imagery, medical horror and dreamlike black-and-white photography into something that still feels strikingly modern more than sixty years later.   So that's four films, two Alastair Sims, one psychopathic Robert Shaw, a professional hitman, a deeply worrying surgeon and a vacuum cleaner salesman. Heute machen sie rund 50.000 Euro Umsatz im Monat und haben gerade ihre erste Mitarbeiterin eingestellt, die sich schon nach zwei Tagen rentiert hat. As Marlow prepares for his journey to the Congo, he visits a psychiatrist who gives him his first glimpse at what he is getting himself into. His introduction into the pseudoscience of phrenology is an ideological starting point for his journey to Africa. Reader and character alike are hit with a wave of disorienting feelings as Marlow has his first interactions with the people of Congo, seeing how they are dehumanized. In the modern day, controversy rages around whether this depiction of Africans represents author Joseph Conrad's view, a larger western view that has been enshrined in the study of history, or just the viewpoint of a character in a book.  This is the second episode in a series on Heart of Darkness. It covers most of Chapter 1 of the book, Marlow's journey to Africa, and his first interactions with the people of the Congo. We also discuss Chinua Achebe's famous critique of the book. Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness (1899) is both a scathing critique of European imperialism and a reminder that all humans have the capacity to succumb to the heart of darkness. It also is not without controversy, as people have been debating it's meaning and essence for over a century now. What exactly is the heart of darkness? Was the Belgian Congo a unique circumstance of imperialism or just another example of human nature at work? Is the text of Heart of Darkness a legitimate critique of the imperial mindset, or is it actually just upholding the very norms and imperialistic conventions it is ostensibly dismantling?
