Restart Podcast Ep. 104: We’re ready for a repair boom at UK music festivals

We’re currently running a survey of our listeners. Please take a few minutes to fill it in so that we can make the content that you want to hear! Off the back of a very wet and dreary start to the year in the UK, we're bringing memories of sunnier times to all of you. For this episode, we spoke to Clare and Frank about the repair pop-ups that they — with the help of many volunteers — ran at two festivals over the last couple of summers.  Clare Seek is the founder of Share Portsmouth (originally Repair Cafe Portsmouth) and has been running repair events since its inception in 2018. Frank Schoofs founded Marlow Repair Cafe in the same year and has since also set up the Repair Finder. All this to say, that they have plenty of experience running community repair events and in 2024, Frank decided to take one event off the beaten track — to the Cambridge Folk Festival.  When inspiration strikes Frank was pushed to act by the seemingly endless piles of sleeping bags, tents, camping chairs and more that he had been seeing left behind at festivals because he knew that surely more could be done to help this massive waste issue. He did a bit of research and found that the local Cambridge Folk Festival was already doing a fair bit of work around sustainability. So, he pitched the idea of a repair tent at the next edition and that summer, it became a reality!  “I was like, that is a cool idea. Why aren’t we doing more repair out and about because I’m always into taking things out and about and especially focusing on young people as well. I think we need our future generation to be skilled up and excited about repairing things.” Clare, inspired by Frank's blog post on the experience, did her own research and connected with Boomtown Fair. She gathered volunteers from around 10 different repair cafes in the Hampshire network and they brought a ‘Reparium' to the crowd of potentially 80,000 people — a lot of them between the ages of 18 and 26. These huge crowds meant that for both repair events, they saw repair rates much higher than normal. Frank estimates that out of the 14,000 or so people that visited the Cambridge Folk Festival, they managed to help a whopping 10% of them.  Turning broken soles into gateway repairs Both Frank and Clare pointed out that visibility was key to the success of these repair pop-ups. They made sure to place their sites in areas of the festival with plenty of foot traffic, relying partly on people seeing the tent and then returning at a later date when disaster (aka a broken shoe) struck. Though they were both obviously well-prepared with tools and tape, it was a make do and mend attitude that prevailed for repairs over the weekend. Rather than the usual electricals that come to many regular repair events, they said that overwhelmingly the items being brought in were clothing, airbeds, sunglasses, shoes, tents, chairs, trolleys, and a few liquid damaged phones.  We expected that it might be hard to keep people engaged with repairs with so much else going on at these festivals but what Clare realised is that when there is no other option than to repair, people will really get involved in fixing their stuff. It also helped that a lot of the repairs were really simple, providing an accessible and quick introduction to repair that she hoped would influence people's future behaviour.  “In our culture, we’re not really told that some repairs are really simple…we’re often talking about electrical repairs and the barriers to repair, but I think in that festival context where it’s less electrical…some of this stuff is really simple and you can learn those skills and then you can keep using them.” At Restart, and in the repair community at large, we are always trying to find effective ways to reach new audiences — especially younger people. Frank shared that at regular events in Marlow, their attendees are predominantly 50+ years of age. However, at the festival, they helped younger people, families and people from all over the world, including visitors from a repair cafe in Belgium! What is most interesting perhaps is that at both festivals, almost all visitors to the repair pop-ups had not heard of a repair cafe before but absolutely loved the idea.  Clare believes the key to reaching these new audiences is about going to new people not expecting them to come to us. She has taken the same approach by recently bringing community repair events to the University of Portsmouth and connected with younger people on their level. This includes talking to them about campaigning for the Right to Repair and providing them tangible options to take action to tackle one of their biggest concerns, the climate crisis.   Tough tape and trickle down action In the same way that Frank originally inspired Clare to take community repair to new places, they both hope that listeners and organisers will be moved to do the same. They share some tips and tricks on how to get booked to repair at a festival, what the essential items are for mending and fixing on site, and how best to organise volunteers for these events. We also talk about what unusual places they might want to take repair next, including schools and workplaces. And the key takeaway for us: the volunteers loved helping out at the events and they're in high demand. And if anyone at Glastonbury Festival is listening, get in touch! Before we go, we also wanted to give an exciting announcement. This October will be the 10th edition of International Repair Day and to celebrate, our theme will be all about how repair unites us. We’re encouraging groups worldwide to throw a celebration — a repair festival if you will — to mark the occasion. This could be as big as a multi-day event with musical performances and more while people repair, or simply your regular repair event but run in collaboration with a new community in your area (think Scouts or a lending library). We can’t wait to share more in the coming months! In this episode of Being Bookish, I am heading to the tranquil banks of the Thames to visit with Judith, Becks and Suzie as they investigate two unfortunate deaths in Marlow while dealing with personal issues in The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts by Robert Thorogood. As the creator of the hit TV show Death in Paradise, Thorogood knows exactly how to craft a brilliant mystery. This latest release, which hit shelves on January 15th, 2026, marks the fifth book in the popular Marlow Murder Club series. As always, I will be sharing my personal thoughts as well as looking at other reviews to provide a balanced perspective because we cannot all like everything. I will also be keeping it completely spoiler-free because you may want to visit Marlow for yourselves at some point, and you know I don't like to spoil books for anyone! If you enjoy a classic cosy mystery with a sharp-witted protagonist, a touch of eccentricity, and a puzzling case that keeps you guessing, this episode is definitely for you. It is the perfect recommendation for fans of cosy crime and amateur sleuths looking for their next favourite read. Can you solve the mystery before the trio of friends does? To round things off, my second, shorter review is for Esther is Now Following You by Tanya Sweeney. This is a far more unsettling and contemporary read that not only explores the dark side of social media obsession and parasocial relationships but also tackles deeper, moving themes of mental health issues and grief. It offers a sharp contrast to the charming, community-driven sleuthing in Marlow and is a must-read for fans of character-driven stories with real heart. So pop the kettle on, get comfy, and let's talk books. What happens when someone who's spent decades inside the lighting industry's machinery gets straight to it?In this episode of LytePOD, host Sam Koerbel sits down with Geoff Marlow, a veteran consultant and industry strategist who has witnessed firsthand the seismic shifts reshaping architectural lighting—from the rise of LED technology to the relentless wave of consolidation, private equity takeovers, and the erosion of relationships that once held this industry together.Geoff walks through what he calls TTO—the convergence of talent scarcity, technical complexity, and the shift from products to outcomes—and explains why the industry's failure to address these forces is creating chaos across every layer of the supply chain. He reveals why manufacturers, reps, distributors, and designers are all pointing fingers at each other's margins while missing the bigger picture: the process itself is broken. Projects are treated as linear when they're actually iterative. Relationships are treated as poetry when they need to be built on definitive, measurable trust. And consolidation—whether it's reps buying reps, manufacturers buying manufacturers, or private equity rolling up portfolios—keeps failing because purpose is missing. But this isn't just a diagnosis. It's a call to action. Geoff argues that the industry needs to move from inductive chaos to deductive clarity—starting with outcomes, not guesswork. Those margin dollars aren't owed, they're earned. That partnership isn't owed, it's earned. That enthusiasm isn't owed, it's earned. And that if the industry can't create a shared language, a shared purpose, and a shared commitment to solving problems together, it will continue to eat itself from the inside out.

Beck emphasizes the philosophy that leaders must "share the credit and hog the blame" to encourage an environment where employees feel safe to admit mistakes and foster true collaboration. She also discusses the vital role of community and culture, explaining how employee-led initiatives like her CARES Committee and the viral 75 Acts of Kindness built a servanthood culture that directly impacts her sales floor and customer relationships. This is an indispensable guide for dealership leaders focused on operational excellence, ethical culture, and successfully transitioning a family business.

United Way NSV: Day of Caring 2025

The Valley Today

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 5, 2025 21:48

Every September, a wave of orange (this year) shirts sweep across the Northern Shenandoah Valley, signaling a day when the community comes together for a singular purpose: to give back. This is Day of Caring, an annual event organized by the United Way of Northern Shenandoah Valley, and it's more than just a day of volunteerism—it's a celebration of community spirit, corporate partnership, and the power of collective action. In this episode of “The Valley Today,” host Janet Michael sat down with Andy Gail, CEO of United Way NSV, and Beth Falu, Assistant Vice President of Fraud Operations at Navy Federal Credit Union and chair of Day of Caring, to discuss the origins, evolution, and impact of this remarkable event. Mobilizing a Movement Day of Caring is not just a local phenomenon; it's part of a global United Way tradition that mobilizes thousands of volunteers to support their communities. As Andy explains, the event's power lies in its scale: “It's great if you can volunteer two hours here, three hours there, but think about if you could get a thousand people in one day to volunteer—what that impact would be.” In the Northern Shenandoah Valley, that impact is visible across Winchester, Frederick, Clarke, Warren, Shenandoah, and Page counties, where nearly a thousand volunteers fan out to tackle projects for nonprofits, schools, and community organizations. Evolving Opportunities While Day of Caring has long been associated with hands-on projects like painting, landscaping, and building ramps, this year marks a significant evolution. Under Beth's leadership, the event has expanded to include administrative and professional services. “Our volunteers have so many skills,” Beth notes. “We want to evolve our volunteer opportunities to cater to all of our volunteer skill sets.” Now, teams can help with marketing, office organization, and even Excel spreadsheets, ensuring that every volunteer can contribute in a meaningful way. Corporate Champions and Community Partners The event's success is fueled by a diverse array of sponsors, from large corporations like First Bank and Navy Federal to local businesses and mom-and-pop shops. “There was every size business imaginable on that list,” Janet observes, highlighting the region's unique spirit of collaboration. These sponsors don't just write checks—they send teams of employees into the field, fostering camaraderie and a sense of purpose among staff. Beth shares stories of volunteers who travel from as far as Northern Virginia to participate, and Andy recalls his own experience as a nonprofit leader benefiting from Day of Caring before joining United Way. The event, he says, is a lifeline for organizations that lack the resources to complete essential projects. A Day of Celebration and Connection Day of Caring is as much about celebration as it is about service. The day begins with a lively kickoff event at Shenandoah University, complete with coffee, breakfast, music, and motivational words from community leaders. After a day of hard work, volunteers and their families gather at West Oaks Farm Market for an after-party, enjoying food, networking, and even sparklers to “spark change.” The event also coincides with the conclusion of the Community Baby Shower, a collaborative effort to collect supplies for new mothers in need. Donations are gathered at local First Bank branches and Marlow dealerships, then assembled into kits for distribution by Healthy Families, further amplifying the day's impact. Lasting Impact and Growing Momentum The ripple effects of Day of Caring extend far beyond a single day. Volunteers return to work energized and inspired, often bringing their families and colleagues into the fold for future events. Nonprofits receive much-needed support, and the community as a whole is strengthened by the connections forged through shared service. As Beth reflects, “It's so contagious… people just had such a great day. It was very impactful for them and they're just sharing the news.” Andy encourages nonprofits to continue submitting projects and invites anyone interested to visit the newly refreshed United Way NSV website for more information. In a world where it's easy to feel disconnected, Day of Caring stands as a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together. Whether you're wielding a paintbrush, crunching numbers, or simply sharing a meal, every act of caring adds up to something extraordinary. In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Arnau Sebé-Pedrós from the Center for Genomic Regulation in Barcelona about his work on chromatin evolution. The Interview starts by examining specific research findings, including his seminal 2018 paper demonstrating whole-organism single-cell transcriptomics to map larval and adult cell types in the model organism Nematostella vectensis. Dr. Sebe-Pedros recounted the challenges and triumphs faced when delving into single-cell studies of non-model organisms, revealing the innovative strategies employed in the lab to overcome these hurdles. Shifting gears, we touched upon his work comparing cell types and molecular pathways in reef-building corals through single-cell RNA sequencing, contributing to our understanding of evolutionary conservation and divergence within the cnidarian lineage. We discussed how this comparative approach not only adds to knowledge about coral biology but also enhances methodological frameworks in ecological studies. In addition, Dr. Sebe-Pedros shared insights into ongoing efforts to reconstruct eukaryotic chromatin evolution using comparative proteomics and genomics analysis, as well as the mechanisms of genomic regulation in various species. His reflections on the sharing of experimental insights across research groups illustrated the collaborative spirit prevalent in the scientific community, particularly regarding endeavors like the Biodiversity Cell Atlas consortium aimed at expanding single-cell efforts across the tree of life. The episode culminated with Dr. Sebe-Pedros's thoughts on the revolutionary impact of functional genomic technologies and the vast potential they hold for answering longstanding questions in evolutionary biology. With an emphasis on epigenetics, he defined this field as encompassing any information not encoded directly in the DNA, especially in its role in establishing cell identity and differentiation. Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP I love riding my bike with my son. My boy Marlow and I head out when we can and boost around LanVegas on the bikes, and he loves it. It's great to spend time together and see the little man starting to enjoy bikes and being outdoors as much as I did when I was a kid.  But, my guests on this month's episode of Life In The Peloton take on father-and-son cycling adventures. Based over in the North of England, Rich and James Rothwell are an adventurous, off-road, ultra-cycling father and son duo who have undertaken some massive rides together.  Rich, a lifelong mountain biker, coach, and experienced ultra racer, got his son James into cycling from a young age. Still only 14 years old, James has already ticked off some absolutely huge rides on some world-renowned trails like the Highland Trail 550 and the AZT800 out in the USA.  I really wanted to chat to these guys to hear how they started riding together, what their epic adventures look like, and just how far a young talent like James will go in the world of cycling. I found it really inspiring to hear Rich's relaxed, supportive approach in helping James keep the enjoyment, and I also loved hearing how young James supports his old man out there on the trails, too!  I hope Marlow can pick up a thing or two and give me a push or a spoonful of peanut butter when I'm in a bit of a hole next time we head out on the bikes.  Guys, I hope you like this episode. To the mums and dads out there, it's a great listen if you want to get your kids into bike riding and kids, if you've ever wanted to get out on a cycling adventure with your parents, I hope this inspires you.  Cheers Mitch This episode is brought to you by our mates at Shokz – the world leaders in open-ear, bone-conduction headphones. I'll be heading to Adelaide this January for the Santos Tour Down Under — chasing the racing, riding the bunches in the morning, and soaking up all the summer vibes the city has to offer. Hope to see you there.

Bestselling author and Breitbart News editor-in-chief Alex Marlow joins us to discuss his latest book, Breaking the Law. In this in-depth conversation, Marlow explains his research into high-profile legal cases, the concept of “lawfare,” and how he believes political and legal systems intersect in today's America. We explore historical context, recent events, and potential reforms — all with a focus on understanding where the country's legal landscape might be headed.ABOUT BREAKING THE LAWAlex Marlow, editor-in-chief of Breitbart News and two-time New York Times bestselling author of Breaking the News and Breaking Biden, returns with his third book: BREAKING THE LAW: EXPOSING THE WEAPONIZATION OF AMERICA'S LEGAL SYSTEM AGAINST DONALD TRUMP (Threshold Editions; Hardcover; On-sale August 5, 2025), a fearless and thoroughly researched exposé on the new political battleground: the American legal system. In this urgent and gripping book, Marlow turns his sharp investigative lens to the legal cases targeting President Donald Trump-and what they mean for the future of the conservative movement and the rule of law in America. BREAKING THE LAW reveals how legal institutions are being repurposed as political weapons. Marlow not only exposes the players and tactics behind this unprecedented campaign but also makes bold predictions about where this trend is heading-and what conservatives must do to fight back. Hailed "a must read" by President Trump, Marlow's book is both timely and timeless. It's the first major retrospective on the 2024 election and how the legal war on Trump influenced voters, media narratives, and the conservative base. This is Alex Marlow at his most uncompromising and clear-eyed. With the same meticulous reporting and narrative drive that defined his previous works, BREAKING THE LAW offers a provocative and authoritative response to one of the most consequential legal and political stories of our time.ABOUT ALEX MARLOWAlexander Marlow is the New York Times bestselling author of BREAKING THE NEWS and BREAKING BIDEN.
