Every September, a wave of orange (this year) shirts sweep across the Northern Shenandoah Valley, signaling a day when the community comes together for a singular purpose: to give back. This is Day of Caring, an annual event organized by the United Way of Northern Shenandoah Valley, and it's more than just a day of volunteerism—it's a celebration of community spirit, corporate partnership, and the power of collective action. In this episode of “The Valley Today,” host Janet Michael sat down with Andy Gail, CEO of United Way NSV, and Beth Falu, Assistant Vice President of Fraud Operations at Navy Federal Credit Union and chair of Day of Caring, to discuss the origins, evolution, and impact of this remarkable event. Mobilizing a Movement Day of Caring is not just a local phenomenon; it's part of a global United Way tradition that mobilizes thousands of volunteers to support their communities. As Andy explains, the event's power lies in its scale: “It's great if you can volunteer two hours here, three hours there, but think about if you could get a thousand people in one day to volunteer—what that impact would be.” In the Northern Shenandoah Valley, that impact is visible across Winchester, Frederick, Clarke, Warren, Shenandoah, and Page counties, where nearly a thousand volunteers fan out to tackle projects for nonprofits, schools, and community organizations. Evolving Opportunities While Day of Caring has long been associated with hands-on projects like painting, landscaping, and building ramps, this year marks a significant evolution. Under Beth's leadership, the event has expanded to include administrative and professional services. “Our volunteers have so many skills,” Beth notes. “We want to evolve our volunteer opportunities to cater to all of our volunteer skill sets.” Now, teams can help with marketing, office organization, and even Excel spreadsheets, ensuring that every volunteer can contribute in a meaningful way. Corporate Champions and Community Partners The event's success is fueled by a diverse array of sponsors, from large corporations like First Bank and Navy Federal to local businesses and mom-and-pop shops. “There was every size business imaginable on that list,” Janet observes, highlighting the region's unique spirit of collaboration. These sponsors don't just write checks—they send teams of employees into the field, fostering camaraderie and a sense of purpose among staff. Beth shares stories of volunteers who travel from as far as Northern Virginia to participate, and Andy recalls his own experience as a nonprofit leader benefiting from Day of Caring before joining United Way. The event, he says, is a lifeline for organizations that lack the resources to complete essential projects. A Day of Celebration and Connection Day of Caring is as much about celebration as it is about service. The day begins with a lively kickoff event at Shenandoah University, complete with coffee, breakfast, music, and motivational words from community leaders. After a day of hard work, volunteers and their families gather at West Oaks Farm Market for an after-party, enjoying food, networking, and even sparklers to “spark change.” The event also coincides with the conclusion of the Community Baby Shower, a collaborative effort to collect supplies for new mothers in need. Donations are gathered at local First Bank branches and Marlow dealerships, then assembled into kits for distribution by Healthy Families, further amplifying the day's impact. Lasting Impact and Growing Momentum The ripple effects of Day of Caring extend far beyond a single day. Volunteers return to work energized and inspired, often bringing their families and colleagues into the fold for future events. Nonprofits receive much-needed support, and the community as a whole is strengthened by the connections forged through shared service. As Beth reflects, “It's so contagious… people just had such a great day. It was very impactful for them and they're just sharing the news.” Andy encourages nonprofits to continue submitting projects and invites anyone interested to visit the newly refreshed United Way NSV website for more information. In a world where it's easy to feel disconnected, Day of Caring stands as a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together. Whether you're wielding a paintbrush, crunching numbers, or simply sharing a meal, every act of caring adds up to something extraordinary. In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Arnau Sebé-Pedrós from the Center for Genomic Regulation in Barcelona about his work on chromatin evolution. The Interview starts by examining specific research findings, including his seminal 2018 paper demonstrating whole-organism single-cell transcriptomics to map larval and adult cell types in the model organism Nematostella vectensis. Dr. Sebe-Pedros recounted the challenges and triumphs faced when delving into single-cell studies of non-model organisms, revealing the innovative strategies employed in the lab to overcome these hurdles. Shifting gears, we touched upon his work comparing cell types and molecular pathways in reef-building corals through single-cell RNA sequencing, contributing to our understanding of evolutionary conservation and divergence within the cnidarian lineage. We discussed how this comparative approach not only adds to knowledge about coral biology but also enhances methodological frameworks in ecological studies. In addition, Dr. Sebe-Pedros shared insights into ongoing efforts to reconstruct eukaryotic chromatin evolution using comparative proteomics and genomics analysis, as well as the mechanisms of genomic regulation in various species. His reflections on the sharing of experimental insights across research groups illustrated the collaborative spirit prevalent in the scientific community, particularly regarding endeavors like the Biodiversity Cell Atlas consortium aimed at expanding single-cell efforts across the tree of life. The episode culminated with Dr. Sebe-Pedros's thoughts on the revolutionary impact of functional genomic technologies and the vast potential they hold for answering longstanding questions in evolutionary biology. With an emphasis on epigenetics, he defined this field as encompassing any information not encoded directly in the DNA, especially in its role in establishing cell identity and differentiation. Michael Savage speaks with Alex Marlow, editor-in-chief of Breitbart News. They explore Marlow's new book "Breaking the Law," which examines how America's legal system has been weaponized against conservatives. They delve into how billionaire leftists, like George Soros and the Sandler Family, are using their fortunes to fund activist organizations that destabilize America's legal system. Marlow and Savage discuss the intricate details of 'lawfare' used against Donald Trump, the billionaires' funding of leftist media and activist groups, and the behind-the-scenes manipulation that threatens America's core institutions. From the weaponization of the legal system to the shady dealings of financial moguls, this conversation uncovers the dangerous underpinnings of modern political corruption.

Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP I love riding my bike with my son. My boy Marlow and I head out when we can and boost around LanVegas on the bikes, and he loves it. It's great to spend time together and see the little man starting to enjoy bikes and being outdoors as much as I did when I was a kid. But, my guests on this month's episode of Life In The Peloton take on father-and-son cycling adventures. Based over in the North of England, Rich and James Rothwell are an adventurous, off-road, ultra-cycling father and son duo who have undertaken some massive rides together. Rich, a lifelong mountain biker, coach, and experienced ultra racer, got his son James into cycling from a young age. Still only 14 years old, James has already ticked off some absolutely huge rides on some world-renowned trails like the Highland Trail 550 and the AZT800 out in the USA. I really wanted to chat to these guys to hear how they started riding together, what their epic adventures look like, and just how far a young talent like James will go in the world of cycling. I found it really inspiring to hear Rich's relaxed, supportive approach in helping James keep the enjoyment, and I also loved hearing how young James supports his old man out there on the trails, too! I hope Marlow can pick up a thing or two and give me a push or a spoonful of peanut butter when I'm in a bit of a hole next time we head out on the bikes. Guys, I hope you like this episode. To the mums and dads out there, it's a great listen if you want to get your kids into bike riding and kids, if you've ever wanted to get out on a cycling adventure with your parents, I hope this inspires you. Andy Marlow is on the show today. He's one of Australia's most credentialed and awarded architects and passivhaus designers, and has built a career on the forefront of imagining, designing and creating better places for people who breathe. Andy's career has spanned custom design and built projects on single homes to large commercial projects to civic centre and entire urban renewal projects. There aren't many who've seen as many different projects and contexts than Andy over the last three decades, and who's delivered such a diversity of work with a simple goal in mind - the lowest possible environmental impact for the greatest amount of human benefit.A lot of my days are spent thinking about and trying to decipher the state of housing in this country and its relationship to net zero ambitions and as places of refuge and safety from an increasingly volatile and dangerous climate. I saw that Andy had presented at the latest Australian PassivHaus Conference with - in his words - a rant about the Australian housing market - and I wanted to get him on to get into his thinking in more detail. I knew of Andy's work through our mutual friend Chris Nunn's passivhaus so was confident he'd have plenty to offer, and he sure did. His insights and perspectives from a career on the frontline of better housing are invaluable. He makes clear what's obviously wrong in Australia's housing market - weak enforcement, long lasting legacy issues from defects, a confusing regulatory framework - but Andy also helped me better appreciate the dynamics of a volume builder market that seems to serve almost nobody, the wafer thin margins throughout the industry that imperil all projects and people, and the huge costs of ignoring housing as a health topic. We also get into the five principles of passivhaus, its origins, myths, benefits and progress.More than anything though this is a chat about what we all know needs to change - the housing system from the ground up. From being increasingly inaccessible and unaffordable, the gaps between the present state and what's appropriate for health, comfort, decarbonisation and protection from a changing climate, to the somehow radical idea that governments should be active stewards over ensuring quality housing is upheld as a basic human right that all people should feel secure in. Andy has a clear diagnosis as well as guidance and suggestions on what we can all do and what needs to occur structurally to rectify this. 40 years to get into this dynamic won't be solved overnight, but some heavy lifting is needed sooner rather than later to begin unpicking the mess we're in now.Andy's understanding of how housing in this country works - and doesn't - is relevant to us all. We need new visions, practices and ambitions for how we live, and Andy has them.Check out Andy's work at Envirotecture. We are in Marlow for our first ever festival, and our guest is comedian and podcast legend, Elis James! Luke Marlow's love affair with thoroughbreds can be traced to the days when he had photos of the champion mare Makybe Diva prominently displayed on his bedroom walls. Around this time his parents were managing the Merlo Downs Stud at Minden about 63 kms west of Brisbane. Luke's life changed forever a couple of years later when Jeff Marlow took out a trainer's licence and quickly enlisted his son as principal trackwork rider. By the time the teenager had ridden a few fast gallops and provided a guest call of a race at Yepoon in 2008, the die was cast. Just three years later the young Queenslander won the fourth edition of a Sky Racing Scholarship and was off and running in the career he'd dreamed about. Now approaching his 32nd birthday, Luke Marlow is recognised as one of the most versatile performers in the Australian racing media. He joins us on the podcast to reflect on a whirlwind fourteen years since arriving in Sydney. He begins by confirming a very important recent development in his personal life. Luke talks about the never-ending variety in his working life. He lives by the roster. He talks of the changing face of country racing in NSW where undreamed of prize money levels regularly attract the patronage of major Sydney stables. Official barrier trials are almost as frequent as TAB race meetings. Luke is frequently called upon to describe the trials for Sky Thoroughbred Central. He talks of his hosting role on the popular Saturday morning radio programme Racing HQ. Luke's talks of the change in his situation when Sky's Number 2 caller Mitch Manners accepted a full time role with the Gold Coast Turf Club in 2023. He immediately became understudy to the station's chief caller Darren Flindell. In this capacity he's had the opportunity to call five editions of the Provincial Championship Final. The easy going Queenslander talks of early life in his home state with special mention of happy days at the Merlo Downs Thoroughbred Stud. He recalls his introduction to the task of riding trackwork for his father Jeff. Luke recounts the entertaining story of the day he was invited to call a race on the public address system at a Yepoon meeting in 2008. The winner was trained by his dad and owned by his grandmother. He still regards the occasion as one of the greatest thrills of his life. He pays tribute to Tony McMahon, the man who gave him the opportunity to call the race that helped shape his destiny. Luke takes us back to 2011 when he “made the cut” for the fourth Sky Young Race Caller's Scholarship. He looks back on a week of auditions culminating in a nerve wracking race call at Wyong. He was in disbelief when the judges voted in his favour. Seven years after settling into his new job, Marlow was stunned to receive a phone call from the Singapore Turf Club who'd been left short of a race caller when Tom Wood relocated to Hong Kong. Luke agonised over the decision he had to make. He looks back on an exciting two years in the famous city-state with special emphasis on his meeting with the lovely Kiwi jockey now destined to become his wife. Luke talks about the ravages of Covid 19 and the soul destroying lockdown endured by all Singaporians. He and Alysha made the decision to return to Sydney. He pays tribute to Alysha's work ethic and acknowledges her emergence as one of Sydney's most in demand jockeys. Luke explains how he manages to control his emotions when calling races in which his fiancee is competing. He talks about the legendary NZ racing family from which Alysha descends. It's a laid back chat with a young Queenslander whose career path was never in doubt. All he needed was an ounce of luck to make the dream come true.

David Marlow is known as the Ikigai Guy. I didn't know that when I first came across his writing. What I did know was that something in his work resonated deeply with me. As the town gets ready, a stranger arrives from a large ship and sabotages the town's communications and transports. Barrow's sheriff, Eben Oleson, investigates and learns that his estranged wife, Stella, missed the last plane out of town and must stay for 30 days. That night, a band of vampires, led by Marlow, attacks and slaughters most of the townspeople, forcing Eben's family and several other survivors to take shelter in a boarded-up house with a hidden attic. In the police station holding cell, Marlow finds the stranger, who believes the vampires will "turn" him as a reward for his help. However, Marlow snaps his neck. When the vampires torture a civilian as bait, Eben takes the opportunity to save a resident named John, who was hiding underneath a hut, injured from trying to protect his wife; however, Eben is horrified to see he has turned and forced to kill him when John tries to devour him. Resident Wilson is forced to chase after his father, Isaac, who has dementia, out into the open, and both are killed. 18 days later, when a blizzard hits, the group uses the whiteout to go to the general store for supplies but gets stranded after the blizzard ends. They head for the station while Eben creates a diversion. He lures the vampires to his grandmother's house and uses one of her ultraviolet lights to severely burn Marlow's lover, Iris, forcing him to mercy-kill her. Eben is aided by Beau, the town snowplow operator, who kills many vampires with his tractor. When he crashes, Beau attempts a suicide bombing to kill the remaining vampires. However, Beau and the vampires survive the explosion, and Marlow crushes his head. On Day 27, Stella and Eben see the deputy, Billy, signaling them with a flashlight and bring him back to the station after finding out he killed his family to save them from a more painful death. The trio find the others have made for the utilidor, a power and sewage treatment station that still has power, and head over there, but are separated after Stella saves Gail Robbins, a young girl whose family was slaughtered by the vampire Zurial. Eben and Billy make it to the utilidor but are attacked by the vampire Arvin. Billy kills Arvin but gets bitten in the process. Eben is forced to kill him when he starts to turn. As the month ends, with the sun due to rise, the vampires prepare to burn the fuel line running through the town, which will cause it to explode and destroy evidence of their presence. Realizing Stella is trapped and that he cannot beat the vampires in his current state, Eben injects himself with Billy's blood. Now a vampire, Eben confronts Marlow and manages to kill the vampire leader after a vicious fight, causing the remaining vampires to flee. Eben and Stella watch the sunrise together, sharing one last kiss. As the sun rises, Eben's body burns to ash in Stella's arms.
