California is one of only 10 states that don't require public elementary schools to screen for dyslexia. But research shows that detection of dylexia's early warning signs can lessen reading challenges for kids down the line. We'll hear why California has been an outlier and about the renewed push for legislation to mandate early screening. And, with a collective $28.7 million of the past two annual state budgets allocated to UCSF's Dyslexia Center for research on dyslexia and the development of a new, multilingual and free screening tool, we'll hear about how the tool works and the latest neuroscientific research. In this episode, we're joined by the incredible Cindy Hall. Mrs. Cindy Hall is the founder and director of Cindy Hall Consulting and Mustard Seed Tutoring and the author of Dyslexia Friendly Classroom professional development. It is her passion to help struggling students identify why they are struggling and architect a plan for success. Cindy is excited to work with individual students in a tutoring setting or to help teachers understand the characteristics of dyslexic students and best practices that are vital for dyslexic learners, yet good for all students. Cindy was the founding director of the Dyslexia Center at Lindsay Lane Christian Academy, which she directed for a decade before retiring from full-time school-setting work. She has 17 years of classroom teaching experience with elementary students and another 17 years focused on teaching dyslexic learners. She is a graduate of Faith Baptist Bible College with postgraduate work in special education at Iowa State University as well as many hours of training in the Orton-Gillingham approach for dyslexic learners. In this episode, we speak with Cindy about the biggest challenges dyslexic learners and their families face, why children with dyslexia struggle with homework, and some of the best strategies you can use to help them with homework. In this episode, we will be learning about an occupational therapy practitioner in vision therapy. Normanie McKenzie Ricks, MS, OTR/L is an Occupational Therapist who has a passion for helping individuals with neurological and vision deficits, particularly those with learning-related vision problems. She is a graduate of The University of Alabama at Birmingham and UCLA. As a proud veteran and Officer in the United States Navy, she provided Occupational Therapy Intervention to service members and their families and addressed neurological issues so that they could return to full duty and fulfilled lives. She is a member of the Lions Club which serves and advocates for the blind and visually impaired through its local and global initiatives She also travels internationally and provides instruction for educators at their schools for the blind and developmentally disabled. Normanie's personal passion for the field hits really close to home. As a third-grader her very own daughter began to have difficulty with reading comprehension, reporting daily headaches, and struggling with standardized assessments. After vision therapy, she now reads above grade level and scored at the ninth-grade level on her writing assessments as a fifth-grader. According to the Dyslexia Center of Utah: One in five students, or 15-20% of the population, has a language-based learning disability. Dyslexia is the most common of the language-based learning disabilities. According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), 38% of all fourth grade students are “below basic” reading skills. They are at or below the 40th percentile for their age group. · Nationwide 20% of the elementary school population is struggling with reading Therefore, what's the best solution to address this problem? Dr. Nathan Clemens is an Associate Professor, Department of Special Education at the University of Texas. His research and teaching focuses on improving instruction, intervention, and assessment for children and adolescents with dyslexia and other forms of reading difficulties. More specifically he studies children's development of word reading skills in early elementary school (and how difficulties with word reading skills arise), reading comprehension among older students, improving educators' and researchers' use of assessment data to better understand their students' unique needs and progress. Overall, he conducts research to better understand interventions, key practices, and assessments that are effective for students with the most intensive learning difficulties. By reading on our devices, we’re losing abilities it took us thousands of years to develop. That’s because reading from a screen – a computer, a tablet, a phone – lends itself to skimming. This lack of deep reading alters brain development and erodes essential skills, like critical thinking and empathy, according to literacy expert, Maryanne Wolf. Author of the book, Reader Come Home: The Reading Brain in a Digital World, Maryanne is the Director of the Center for Dyslexia, Diverse Learners and Social Justice at UCLA and past professor of Citizenship and Public Service at Tufts University. She is Co-Founder of Curious Learning, a global literacy project, and she works with the Dyslexia Center at the UCSF School of Medicine. Maryanne is not opposed to digital reading. Instead, she’s on a mission to help us develop what she calls a "bi-literate brain," that is, a brain suited for digital and analog reading, and she explains how we can teach young people to gain these important skills.
