What does it take to build a thriving, faith-filled parish? In this episode, I sit down with Father Jamie Zarse, pastor at Sacred Heart Parish in Shawnee, Kansas, to unpack his vision for renewing his parish—starting with a team of prayer warriors and leaders—and the spiritual habits that are transforming his community. From deeper devotion to the Eucharist and the Rosary to more frequent confession and scripture-based prayer, these simple yet powerful practices are sparking real change. Mass attendance is up by 18%, generosity is growing with an additional $408,000 in tithing, and parishioners are coming alive in their faith. Father Jamie also reveals why measuring spiritual progress and forming strong leadership teams are key to sustaining this momentum. He shares how his leadership team, a mix of staff and dedicated volunteers, meets weekly to ensure they are always working on the most important things. They even use innovative tools like QR code surveys during Mass to track engagement in key spiritual habits. Whether you're a parish leader or just passionate about seeing your faith community flourish, this episode is packed with wisdom you won't want to miss. Discover how Father Jamie's approach has led to a significant increase in OCIA participants and the success of marriage enrichment programs that have saved marriages and strengthened families. This week I sit down with Philip Bugaiski to discuss ocular tracking, reading difficulties and vision therapy. Dr. Bugaiski was born in New York and first developed an interest in optometry as a result of childhood vision challenges, requiring vision therapy. He studied science as an undergraduate at the Penn State University graduating with honors. He was awarded one of six national scholarships for optometry from the US Air Force. He served his country with distinction. He finished his doctoral work at the State University of New York College of Optometry. He completed fellowships in Synotic Optometry and Vision Therapy. He worked as Chief of Pediatrics and Vision Therapy for a multi-doctor practice until he founded The Developmental Vision Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. He specializes in Vision Development, Vision Therapy, Pediatric Optometry, and Vision Rehabilitation. Dr. Bugaiski is also North Carolina's only Fellow of the College of Syntonic Optometry. He is a sought-after guest speaker for various groups on a local, national, and international level. All too often, children and adults are told that their eyes are healthy, they have 20/20 eyesight or their glasses are the correct power, and there is nothing else to be done. They are told that their reading issues are inborn dyslexia and other reductionistic diagnosis. At The Developmental Vision Center, Dr. Bugaiski looks beyond 20/20 eyesight. His team is there to treat the person, not just their eyes. Vision therapy is a program of progressive visual activities performed under doctor supervision, individualized by a vision therapist to fit the needs of each patient. In a statement, he is treating the child not a diagnostic name. Please enjoy my conversation with Philip Bugaiski, Dr. M Dr. Bugaiski Website LinkedIn Link

In her book, The Hidden Link Between Vision and Learning, Wendy Beth Rosen cited a study by Ohio State University. That research study found that 69% of students with IEPs identified as having treatable vision problems, yet would pass a typical school screening. Most people only associate vision with eyesight, but today's guest explains that there is so much more to the visual system and even a child with great eyesight could be struggling with vision-related learning difficulties. Today's guest is Dr. Juanita Collier and she is here to discuss these vision related learning difficulties. A parent actually recommended this interview after her experience finding the help her child needed. I am so glad they reached out. This interview is so informative for all parents and Dr. Collier provides us with some great tips and guidelines to help the development of a child's visual system. Show Notes: [2:57] - 10% of children have a vision-related problem that interferes with learning. [3:22] - Vision is how you are taking in anything through your visual system. It is more than eyesight. [4:33] - Most screenings test distance vision, but near vision isn't frequently checked in children. [5:46] - Kids don't know how to explain that their vision is poor, especially if that is how it has always been for them. [8:43] - Dr. Collier describes the different parts of a vision test and how she is able to determine if the challenges a child is having are due to their vision. [11:56] - In addition to eyesight, visual processing needs to be evaluated. [13:50] - Dr. Collier explains what visual therapy entails and how it can positively impact students with vision-related learning difficulties. [16:03] - For children who didn't crawl, parts of their vision hasn't been fully developed. [18:23] - Currently, we are teaching children to read before their visual system is ready. [21:03] - Excessive screen time can create some problems. [23:19] - We are losing the need for a lot of skills that used to develop naturally because of excessive screen use. [25:05] - Eye strain is a concern. Adults will take a break when they have eye strain from screen time, but children don't have that regulation. [26:09] - What is the 20-20-20 Rule? [28:23] - Dr. Collier shares information on concussions in children due to sports. About Our Guest: Dr. Collier is a leading Behavioral Optometrist and the founder of 4D Vision Gym. She specializes in post-concussion care, vision-related learning difficulties, visual rehabilitation and visual development for patients of all ages. Dr. Christina Murray OD, FCOVD, is a board-certified optometrist in vision development. She is a proud graduate of both The Ohio State University and Nova Southeastern University. Since she was a child, Dr. Murray wanted to be an eye doctor but developed a passion for working with those with vision problems when she discovered deficits in her own visual system as an adult. Over the years, she has spent her post-graduate years studying primitive reflexes, syntonics light therapy, and exploring how the brain processes visual information. Dr. Murray is on a mission to bring awareness child's ability to read and learn. She is actively working with parents, legislators, and the school board to change the laws to consider visual processing disorders a disability. Expanding the law will allow for better coverage by medical insurance plans and children to get the accommodations they need in the classroom. Dr. Murray opened Center for Better Learning in 2018 and has expanded to three office locations in Coconut Creek, Boynton Beach, and Palm Beach Gardens. She works very closely with occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech therapists, cranial-sacral therapists, and tutors to provide comprehensive care for each patient. Her dream is to eventually open an office location where she can work side by side with other health care professionals in a collaborative way. Dr. Christina Murray lives in Boca Raton with her husband, Paul, two daughters, Amelia and Emma, and two golden retrievers, Sadie and Bentley. When she is not seeing patients, she enjoys reading, baking, and spending time with her family. As an avid runner, biker, and swimmer, she hopes her kids will allow her enough time to train for a half iron man this year. Changes to vision is are some of the most noticeable effects of a brain injury/concussion. Perhaps ironically, I almost fail to notice my own double vision, yet it undoubtedly has a profound effect on my daily life, from balance to reading and much more. Luckily for me, Dr. Sarah Hutchens and Vision Therapist Kara Osmond are in my city at Vision Development Centre. They join me on episode 96 to talk all about vision development and vision therapy post-concussion (or in my case, post severe brain injury). What's up with double vision? What's up with my eyes? Can anything be done about it?

Concussion is a confusing, somewhat misunderstood diagnosis that impacts many individuals every day. We have an in-depth conversation about Concussion, to discuss what it is, what happens to individuals who have one and what kinds of things help to cure concussion. One intervention that can really make a difference for those who suffer concussion is Vision Therapy, and the growing field of Behavioural Optometry. We discuss how athletes who play sports with high risk of concussion can be assessed by a Behavioural Optometrist to see how well their visual systems and movement systems are coordinated, before an injury happens. This may indicate concussion suseptibility and may help to decrease the impact of a concussion on this individual. BIO: Dr. Meuller is an Optometrist in Vision Development and Rehabilitation. Centerton Family Eyecare 101 Dawn Dr. Centerton, AR 72719 Phone: (479) 795-1411 The leading provider of quality vision care products and personalized optometric services in Centerton. Dr. Jacob Dufour Dr. Dufour was raised in Rogers, enjoying the culture and outdoor activities offered by Northwest Arkansas. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry at the University of Arkansas and went on to graduate summa cum laude from the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN. His residency training in pediatric vision development and vision rehabilitation was completed in Seattle, WA through Pacific University. He is an active member of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development and the Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association. Dr. Dufour’s behavioral approach focuses on visual function in the context of other sensory and motor systems. Outside of clinic Dr. Dufour spends his time at Beaver Lake and enjoying good food, art, and music. Dr. Dufour had many interest growing up, but he finally settled on optometry. “I was very uncertain of what career path I wanted to pursue. I considered working in architecture, marketing, philosophy, and graphic design. Eventually I decided on optometry for its personal interaction and community service,” said Dr. Dufour. Interacting with kids is a pleasure for Dr. Dufour. “Some might say I’m a kid at heart. I’ve always enjoyed working with kids in my church youth group and as a summer camp counselor, so it seemed pretty natural to direct my career toward pediatrics. In the summer of 2013 I began working in a vision therapy clinic and immediately developed a passion for this population. In the case of vision development and pediatrics, I was moved by the influence vision therapy had on my young patients struggling with academics. In working with adults with acquired brain injuries, I gained an appreciation for the debilitating potential of functional vision loss and the joy of helping people return to independence and a normal daily life. In both cases I find that it is in vision therapy and rehabilitation that I am best able to impact the lives of my patients; and as such, I strive to continually improve my care so to provide the best quality of life for my patients.” The best is yet to come…. according to Dr. Dufour. “While the field of vision therapy has achieved much in the way of clinical and academic research, there is a vast amount still unknown in the neurophysiology of many common visual disorders. I believe that the most effective treatments for strabismus, amblyopia, and post-traumatic vision syndrome are yet to come, and they are to be found through continued study and research of the neuro-visual system. My hope is to participate in the advancement of the profession through contributing to this research.” Dr. Dufour is at our Centerton location Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
