Have you noticed a shift in how children develop, socialize, and perceive the world around them? Today we discuss the pressing issues raised in Jonathan Haidt's "The Anxious Generation".We explore the profound ways in which the digital age and evolving parenting styles are impacting childhood and adolescence. A key concern is the detrimental impact of screen time on children's visual systems, potentially leading to issues like accommodative spasms and increased nearsightedness. We contrast today's screen-saturated lives with the unstructured outdoor play of previous generations, where children naturally developed crucial social skills such as conflict resolution, turn-taking, and risk assessment.Parental anxiety and a fear of unsupervised play have led to more indoor time and structured activities for children. Ironically, while real-world interactions are often heavily monitored, children are frequently left unsupervised in the digital realm, where they can interact with unknown individuals through games and social platforms. We're well aware that community support in establishing healthy boundaries around screens and outdoor activities is vital. We definitely recommend reading "The Anxious Generation" to gain a deeper understanding of these critical issues and to consider how communities can collectively address the challenges of raising children in the digital age.(00:00) Intro(00:34) "The Anxious Generation" and Its Local Impact(01:39) The Detrimental Effects of Screen Use on Child Development(03:05) From Outdoor Independence to Indoor Safety Concerns(11:23) The Paradox of Overprotection: Real World vs. Online World(16:03) Screen Time: Addiction, Academic Needs, and Finding Balance(20:56) Reclaiming Childhood: Prioritizing Real-World Skills and Unstructured PlayCheck out our Digital Programs4D Built for LifeStart your FREE TRIAL today 4D Built to Read Digital ProgramConcussion RecoveryBuilt to DriveFollow us at 4D Vision Gym on Facebook and Instagram @4dvisiongymvt for the latest news and updates. "Sometimes the signs of a vision issue don't show up in an eye exam—they show up in your child's behavior."In this episode, Jessica shares three key behaviors at home that could indicate your child is struggling with a hidden vision issue. While a 20/20 eye exam might suggest everything is fine, these red flags could signal there's more going on beneath the surface.Behaviors to Watch For:Difficulty Paying Attention – Symptoms that mimic ADHD, like trouble focusing on tasks, could be related to convergence insufficiency or other vision challenges.Emotional Exhaustion After School – If your child melts down or becomes irritable at home, it may be due to the strain of compensating for vision issues throughout the school day.Clumsiness and Spatial Awareness Issues – Frequent tripping, bumping into objects, or difficulty with left/right orientation may point to problems with depth perception or visual processing.Jessica explains how these behaviors often go unnoticed or misdiagnosed but can be addressed through vision therapy. If these signs resonate with you, tune in to learn more about how to support your child and where to seek help.(00:00) Intro(00:48) Identifying Vision Issues in Children(02:40) Behavioral Signs of Vision Problems(03:43) Understanding Convergence Insufficiency(05:12) The 4D Built to Read Program(06:01) School Performance and Vision(08:19) Clumsiness and Vision(10:11) Dyslexia vs. Vision IssuesCheck out our Digital ProgramsStart your FREE TRIAL today 4D Built to Read Digital ProgramConcussion RecoveryBuilt to DriveFollow us at 4D Vision Gym on Facebook and Instagram @4dvisiongymvt for the latest news and updates. In this episode, expert medical practitioners Kim Pittis and Dr. Carol discusses the frequency specific microcurrent (FSM) therapy, sharing a year in review and numerous patient case studies. They delve into conditions such as frozen shoulder, low back pain, sacroiliac joint issues, endometriosis, corticobasal syndrome, and vestibular injuries, providing detailed insights into diagnosis, treatment techniques, and patient outcomes. Additionally, they highlight the importance of medical imaging, patient history, and the use of adjunct treatments like magnesium supplementation. The episode also touches on the practical applications of FSM in clinical settings and patient education resources. 00:00 Introduction and New Year Greetings 00:20 Reflecting on the Past Year 00:45 Challenges in Treating Shoulder Conditions 01:38 Case Study: Nerve Pain and MRI Findings 04:03 Low Back Pain: Common Complaints and Protocols 06:28 SI Joint Issues and Treatment Approaches 12:14 Vestibular Injuries: Diagnosis and Patient Experiences 25:00 Endometriosis: Advanced Treatment Techniques 33:16 Understanding Vestibular Injuries 35:54 Vision Therapy vs Prism Glasses 41:30 The Role of the Omentum 43:55 Exploring Corticobasal Disease 47:43 Magnesium and Low Back Pain 56:56 Awards and Community 59:15 Conclusion and Sign-Off Understanding Low Back Pain: Low back pain remains a top complaint across various age groups, from athletes to octogenarians. It's crucial to differentiate the underlying causes, particularly when it comes to disc-related pain, which often manifests as leg pain rather than low back discomfort. The low back pain protocol, focusing predominantly on facets alongside addressing wear and tear in the annulus, serves as a comprehensive approach to this widespread issue. This protocol is especially beneficial when imaging isn't available or conclusive, laying a foundation for symptom management. SI Joint Dysfunction - Unpacking the Complexity: A fascinating exploration into sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunction reveals its intricate nature. Whether caused by torque from improper adjustments, as when a drop table is improperly utilized, or exacerbated by tension from pregnancy, SI joint issues demand meticulous attention. Taping and targeted FSM treatment on the joint capsule and ligaments can significantly reduce nerve pain radiating to the legs. The role of the psoas muscle, especially following a C-section, further complicates SI joint recovery due to potential scarring and pelvic misalignment. The Role of Compression Garments: There's ongoing discussion about utilizing compression shorts or sacroiliac belts to stabilize these joints. While sacroiliac belts can occasionally misalign the joint, compression shorts might offer a lateral stabilization that merits exploration. These garments can be crucial in transitioning from taping to fostering natural joint stability. Navigating Vestibular Injuries: Vestibular injuries, often overlooked, are prevalent among patients with chronic fatigue and other systemic symptoms. They frequently arise from seemingly minor incidents like car accidents or abrupt motion, causing disruptions in the vestibular system. Identifying these injuries often involves evaluating the patient's history and using tools like the BIVSS. Prism glasses can be an effective interim solution, stabilizing one's visual field before more intensive therapies are introduced. Insight into Endometriosis Treatment: Treating endometriosis extends beyond addressing the reproductive organs. The diffuse nature of endometrial scarring necessitates an FSM protocol that tackles inflammatory and scar tissues, including underlying adhesions in the vagus, intestines, and even the omentum. The approach often involves dissolving the blood clots and scar tissue while managing bleeding, underlining the need for a comprehensive strategy. Low Back Pain and Bowel Function: An intriguing observation links magnesium citrate laxatives and back pain relief. Given its role as a laxative, magnesium citrate may alleviate discomfort by reducing constipation-related pressure, emphasizing the interconnectedness of bowel health and musculoskeletal well-being. Advancing FSM Treatment Protocols: As we continue to advance our understanding and treatment protocols, the importance of recognizing the complex interplay between different bodily systems becomes evident. Integrating new insights into these conditions propels FSM's capacity to offer relief, fostering a holistic approach to patient care. Through ongoing discourse and clinical exploration, we are better equipped to address these intricate cases, supporting our patients on their path to recovery.

"Vision issues aren't just about 20/20 eyesight. It's about how students see and process their world, and teachers can be the first to notice when something's off."In this episode, we dive into the critical role teachers can play in identifying vision issues in their students. We discuss some of the common signs that might be overlooked in the classroom, from children rubbing their eyes to using their whole head to read instead of just their eyes. We also explain how these visual challenges can affect a student's academic performance and overall behavior.Teachers are often the first line of defense when it comes to spotting these issues, and we explore 3 practical ways they can support students with potential vision problems:Observe classroom behavior for signs like head movement or eye rubbingAsk students questions about what they're seeing or experiencing to better understand their struggles.Advocate for comprehensive vision exams beyond the typical 20/20 vision checks to assess functional vision and eye coordination.Plus, we share a special resource we've created for teachers—a checklist that can help you spot signs of vision issues in your classroom. In this mini-episode, Jess shares her personal experience with discovering her son's vision issues despite her professional background. She emphasizes the importance of being vigilant about children's visual health and the transformative power of vision therapy.Jess recounts how she noticed subtle changes in her son's behavior, such as avoiding reading and writing, and increased screen time. Despite her son's early reading abilities and good grades, these signs prompted her to seek a professional evaluation. The diagnosis revealed convergence insufficiency, a common visual disorder we treat at 4D Vision Gym.This episode serves as both a cautionary tale and a message of hope for parents, highlighting that even experts can miss early signs of vision problems in their children. In today's episode we hosted three experts in vision rehabilitation, optometrist Dr. Melissa Zarn Urankar, occupational therapist Katy Coleman, and physical therapist Xenia Andrzejewski to discuss the importance of optimizing care for people with neurologic conditions who have vision dysfunction. The episode will address who sees patients for vision impairment - an optometrist, ophthalmologist, or neuro-ophthalmologist? Plus what are the differences in their roles for clinicians and optometrists. What are some of the things clinicians should look for that would prompt them to assess a patient's vision more closely? What are some key assessments or techniques they can use? What resources and training are available for physical therapists and occupational therapists who want to improve their skills in visual rehabilitation? Are there any certification programs? The guests will share their key insights into having a collaborative relationship with other disciplines and where you can find your team. Key takeaways: - Building relationships with "weirdos" or like-minded clinicians who are open to sharing perspectives is crucial for problem-solving complex patient cases. - Optometrists, occupational therapists, and physical therapists each bring unique expertise, but must be willing to listen and learn from each other to provide the best care. - Clear communication and avoiding jargon is key when working across disciplines. Clinicians should focus on describing functional observations rather than making assumptions. - Attending continuing education courses like the NORA annual conference can help build interdisciplinary knowledge and networks. - Reaching out to local vision therapy specialists and being open to learning from their perspective can greatly benefit OTs and PTs working with neuro patients. By embracing an interdisciplinary approach and putting the patient's needs first, clinicians can provide more comprehensive and effective neuro vision rehabilitation. Collaboration is key to unlocking the best outcomes for those recovering from neurological injuries or conditions. This week I sit down with Philip Bugaiski to discuss ocular tracking, reading difficulties and vision therapy. Dr. Bugaiski was born in New York and first developed an interest in optometry as a result of childhood vision challenges, requiring vision therapy. He studied science as an undergraduate at the Penn State University graduating with honors. He was awarded one of six national scholarships for optometry from the US Air Force. He served his country with distinction. He finished his doctoral work at the State University of New York College of Optometry. He completed fellowships in Synotic Optometry and Vision Therapy. He worked as Chief of Pediatrics and Vision Therapy for a multi-doctor practice until he founded The Developmental Vision Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. He specializes in Vision Development, Vision Therapy, Pediatric Optometry, and Vision Rehabilitation. Dr. Bugaiski is also North Carolina's only Fellow of the College of Syntonic Optometry. He is a sought-after guest speaker for various groups on a local, national, and international level. All too often, children and adults are told that their eyes are healthy, they have 20/20 eyesight or their glasses are the correct power, and there is nothing else to be done. They are told that their reading issues are inborn dyslexia and other reductionistic diagnosis. At The Developmental Vision Center, Dr. Bugaiski looks beyond 20/20 eyesight. His team is there to treat the person, not just their eyes. Vision therapy is a program of progressive visual activities performed under doctor supervision, individualized by a vision therapist to fit the needs of each patient. In a statement, he is treating the child not a diagnostic name. Please enjoy my conversation with Philip Bugaiski, Dr. M Dr. Bugaiski Website LinkedIn Link

André, The Impulsive Thinker, is back with another insightful episode on Neuro Vision Therapy for ADHD Entrepreneurs. This time, he is joined by guest Stel Nikolakakis, an optometrist specializing in neurovision therapy. Together, they delve into the impact of visual processing on sensory experiences, particularly in the realm of personal growth and cognitive abilities. Key Points Covered: - Stel discusses the concept of visual space inefficiencies and how they can lead to sensory overload and anxiety, affecting behavior and emotions. - The conversation explores the concept of neuroplasticity and how training the neurology to adapt to a larger visual space can enhance cognitive abilities and create a safe space for growth. - Stel emphasizes the importance of exploring neurovision therapy as a solution for feeling constricted or held back, particularly for individuals on the autism spectrum or with learning disabilities. Summary Points: - Understanding visual processing inefficiencies and their impact on behavior and emotions. - The role of neuroplasticity in creating a safe space for cognitive growth. - Exploring neurovision therapy as a potential solution for feeling boxed in or held back. One Question for Listeners: André challenges listeners to reflect on their own visual processing experiences and consider how addressing any inefficiencies could impact their personal growth and entrepreneurial journey. Guest: Stel Nikolakakis, trained as an optometrist, discovered a new dimension of vision through a personal journey. When his child, diagnosed with cerebral palsy, was recommended vision therapy, Stel's understanding of vision expanded. Initially skeptical, he pursued further education in the United States at a colleague's suggestion. This experience revealed to him that vision is not merely about eyesight but the intricate connection between the eyes and the brain. Driven by a desire to support his child's development, Stel embraced this broader concept of vision, which redefined his professional and personal approach to visual health. Stel Nikolakakis can be reached via LinkedIn, Drnik.ca or mindseyeoptometry.com. Check out the ADHD Transform Journey Program that is now available. We would like to hear from you! In today's episode, we explore the critical differences between various types of eye exams and why the traditional ones often miss issues affecting children's learning and development. A key question in today's discussion is, why do children rarely report visual problems? We often assume their vision is normal, but the implications this has for diagnosis and treatment are very important. The significance of behavioral optometry in detecting and addressing subtle yet impactful vision disorders early on is crucial. We try to shed a light on common compensations for vision issues, the importance of foundational visual skills, and the profound impact that comprehensive vision care can have on a child's academic performance and confidence.Remember that our 4D Built to Read program is designed to empower parents as junior vision therapists for their children.
