How do students in Ireland manage when the pandemic has closed colleges and universities? Well, HEAnet and Eduroam are providing the connectivity that allows students to attend all their online classes and do all their coursework. Ronan talks to Kerrie Power the CEO of HEAnet. Kerrie talks about HEAnet started, their partnership with Eduroam, and how Longford becoming the first Irish County Council to introduce Eduroam Wi-Fi in town centres. Kerrie also tells Ronan if HEAnet has seen a greater increase in usage during the pandemic and what's next for HEAnet. More on Kerrie: Kerrie Power was appointed Chief Executive of HEAnet CLG by the Board of Directors in June 2017. Kerrie has over 15 year's leadership experience and a strong track record in the technology sector. Before joining HEAnet, Kerrie worked in Google in Dublin and New York and also Facebook. More recently, she has headed up technology start-ups in Dublin including Nordeus Games and YouPass Technologies. Kerrie is a graduate of WIT, with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Computing and holds a Master of Business Administration from Liverpool University, a Professional Diploma in Organisational Change and Transformation, a Professional Diploma in Strategy Development and Innovation. She is currently completing a third Professional Diploma in Leadership as well as completing her final year of Masters of Science in Business Practice and Leadership at UCD Michael Smurfit Business School. Kerrie represents Ireland on the GÉANT General Assembly and was elected to the board of GEANT in Nov 2019. She is also on the Board of HEAnet's subsidiary company EduCampus. Kerrie was also invited by the Department of Higher Education to join the Covid 19 TES Steering group as a subject matter expert, and currently chairs the connectivity sub-group of the Covid 19 TES Steering group.

Hoy será desconectada RIMUJA, tras 10 años. Para los que no lo sepan, RIMUJA proviene de Red Inalámbrica de la Universidad de Jaén. y pasará a la historia por ser la primera red inalámbrica en una universidad europea que cubría todos los campus, interiores y exteriores. En aquellos momentos a los alumnos les daba vergüenza ir a clase con los portátiles, y cuánto más estar por los pasillos; y por supuesto los smartphone e incluso los móviles con con wifi eran un lujo no al alcance de la mayoría. Pero esa infraestructura se acompañó de campañas de apoyo a la compra de portátiles para alumnos, una plataforma de contenidos virtuales y cursos a un profesorado entregado, claves de acceso a los alumnos de bachiller de la provincia y hasta a los periodistas locales, y acceso que permitiera conectar a profesores de otras universidades europeas con wifi, la conocida EDUROAM; y eso llevó a una Universidad pionera en TIC, que compartió proyecto y experiencias con el resto. Por supuesto no era sencillo, una apuesta decidida de los gestores por algo tan nuevo, el costoso equipamiento que venía de Canadá y era tan extraño que lo retuvieron bastante tiempo en la frontera Europea; conforme las TIC fueron avanzando y en todos los hogares se instalaban redes wifi, los usuarios comparaban la estabilidad de RIMUJA con sus redes particulares, sin tener en cuenta que esto eran cientos de antenas que se cubrían unas a otras, de manera que recogían navegantes itinerantes sin necesidad de que éstos se volvieran a identificar. 186.000 euros licitados en 2005, un proyecto de bandera inaugurado por el Presidente de la Junta de Entonces, Manuel Chávez, junto a nuestro primer Rector, el grande de Luis Parras. Pero cumplió su misión de manera sobresaliente, y hoy deja paso a EDUROAM, pero le deja en una comunidad perfectamente preparada y que ha asimilado de tal manera la necesidad de este tipo de infraestructuras tecnológicas que cuando fallan cuesta recordar cómo era la docencia hace sólo 10 años, sin internet, sin portátiles, sin móviles, firmando las actas a mano, con fichas de cartulina, con colas para la matrícula, recibiendo las notas de Selectividad en los Institutos,… Como homenaje a RIMUJA me gustaría que nos quedara la lección de que Jaén puede ser pionera cuando quiere, porque para eso sólo necesitamos personas que se crean los proyectos, porque nosotros formamos la parte principal de nuestro porvenir
