Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Faunalytics' Plans & Priorities For 2024, published by JLRiedi on December 14, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Faunalytics' mission is to empower animal advocates to effectively end animal suffering. As such, what advocates think about our work is of the utmost importance. Feedback like the quote above is especially rewarding, and all the more motivating as we plan for another productive and informative year ahead on behalf of animals and advocates alike. In 2024, we have big plans to conduct more Original Research than ever before, expand our Library in exciting new ways, and build upon the research support services that we provide for the movement. We'll be assessing opportunities to increase our impact, and we'll be working hard to live up to our status as an Animal Charity Evaluators Recommended Charity. Read on to learn all about our upcoming plans, and how you can help us succeed in our mission. A New Original Research Agenda Faunalytics is thrilled to share that our 2024 Original Research plans will support many different advocacy types and tactics. We'll cover topics including political advocacy, youth advocacy, global advocacy, equity and inclusion, consumer behavior, and capacity building. In 2024, we plan to hire a Projects Manager to help our team continue to be as efficient as possible as we bring more and more research to the animal protection community. In-Progress Studies Coming Soon Collaborative Opportunities with Environmental Organizations: We're working to identify environmentalists' perspectives on potential opportunities for, and challenges of, collaborating with animal advocates. Benchmarking Compensation in the Farmed Animal Protection Movement: Salary transparency and benchmarking are important tools for a fair and equitable movement, and this study will provide insights to support advocates and organizations alike. The Impact of Humanewashing on Consumer Behavior: Our simulated shopping experiment will shed light on whether humanewashing helps consumers justify their consumption of animal products. Conservative Political Values with Respect to Animal Advocacy: We're investigating ways that U.S. animal advocates can potentially leverage conservative political values to make headway for animals. International Advocacy Strategies and Needs: We're uncovering the reasons why animal protection groups in different regions and circumstances choose particular approaches to advocacy, and what resources they would need in order to expand their efforts. Chicken and Fish Substitution Meta-Analysis: Are consumers giving up one kind of animal product only to eat another? We're working with Rethink Priorities to answer this question and to help animal advocates navigate this issue. 2024 Upcoming Research Agenda Effective Communication with Legislative Staffers: We'll interview political staffers about their preferences and recommendations for communication, reporting on the most effective strategies with input from advocates who have engaged with legislative teams successfully. Voter Response to a Pro-Animal, Anti-Subsidy Candidate: With a focus on the U.S. and Brazil (high-impact, highly subsidized), we'll present hypothetical candidates in a real election context to better understand voter response. A Case Study of the Impact of Humane Education & Leadership Training: In collaboration with New Roots Institute (formerly FFAC), we'll examine the long-term impact of their humane education leadership program. Fostering A Pro-Animal, Socially Aware Gen Z: We'll conduct focus groups to better understand Gen Z's current social and/or environmental concerns, and explore areas for advocates to pursue engagement (e.g. education, career, lifestyle). Balancing Inclusivity with an Animal-Oriented Mission: In partnership with Dr. Ahmmad Brown of Northwestern Uni...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Announcing Our 2023 Charity Recommendations, published by Animal Charity Evaluators on November 9, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Every year, Animal Charity Evaluators (ACE) spends several months evaluating animal advocacy organizations to identify those that work effectively and are able to do the most good with additional donations. Our goal is to help people help animals by providing donors with impactful giving opportunities that can reduce animal suffering to the greatest extent possible. We are excited to announce that this year, we have selected six recommended charities. In previous years, we have categorized our recommended charities into two separate tiers: Top and Standout. This year, we have decided to move to only one tier: Recommended Charities. Having just one tier more fairly represents charities and better supports a pluralistic, resilient, and impactful animal advocacy movement. We expect it will also increase our ability to raise funds for the most important work being done to reduce animal suffering. Additionally, this shift will allow us to make better-informed grants to each charity and reduce time spent on administrative tasks. In 2023, we conducted comprehensive evaluations of 14 animal advocacy organizations that are doing promising work. We are grateful to all the charities that participated in this year's charity evaluations. While we can only recommend a handful of charities each year, we believe that all the charities we evaluate are among the most effective in the animal advocacy movement. However, per our evaluation criteria, we estimate that additional funds would have marginally more impact going to our Recommended Charities, making them exceptional giving opportunities. Faunalytics, The Humane League, and Wild Animal Initiative have all retained their status as Recommended Charities after being re-evaluated this year. Newly evaluated charities that join their ranks are Legal Impact for Chickens, New Roots Institute, and Shrimp Welfare Project. The Good Food Institute, Fish Welfare Initiative, Dansk Vegetarisk Forening, Çiftlik Hayvanlarını Koruma Derneği and Sinergia Animal have all retained their recommended charity status from 2022. Below, you will find a brief overview of each of ACE's Recommended Charities. For more details, please check out our comprehensive charity reviews. Recommended in 2023 Faunalytics is a U.S.-based organization that connects animal advocates with information relevant to advocacy. Their work mainly involves conducting and publishing independent research, working directly with partner organizations on various research projects, and promoting existing research and data for animal advocates through their website's content library. Faunalytics has been a Recommended Charity since December 2015. To learn more, read our 2023 comprehensive review of Faunalytics. Legal Impact for Chickens (LIC) works to make factory-farm cruelty a liability in the United States. LIC files strategic lawsuits for chickens and other farmed animals, develops and refines creative methods to civilly enforce existing cruelty laws in factory farms, and sues companies that break animal welfare commitments. LIC's first lawsuit, the shareholder derivative case against Costco's executives for chicken neglect, was featured on TikTok and in multiple media outlets, including CNN Business, Fox Business, The Washington Post, and Meatingplace (an industry magazine for meat and poultry producers). This is the first year that Legal Impact for Chickens has become a Recommended Charity. To learn more, read our 2023 comprehensive review of Legal Impact for Chickens. Today's topic is a hard one to swallow. Before this interview, I didn't realize that factory farms are responsible for the majority of the agricultural practices in this country. Unfortunately, these farms are often hidden away and what lies behind the scenes is deeply upsetting - animals suffering in horrific living conditions, workers exposed to hazardous environments, and risks to public health due to environmental toxins that will blow your mind. However, it is only by learning more about this topic that we can make meaningful changes, something Rowdey Keelor from FFAC (factory farming awareness coalition) will be helping us do in this episode. Today's interview is important, and I think you will be glad you listened, bc even though this might not be a hot trending topic, you'll be empowered to say you now know better and are aware of how you can do better. And we were also told that yeah, you really should be having the kids open up their cow's milk. I went down through all the tables and said, “open up your milk, open up your milk.” Or, I was told, we just won't get our funding because this was a school that was a turnaround school, all the kids are on free lunch. And, so this is how we got our funding as a school. – Monica Chen Monica Chen is the executive director of the Factory Farming Awareness Coalition, an organization that educates and empowers individuals and communities to support just and sustainable food systems.
