We go through our thought process about coming up with an initial plan. Disclaimer: This is in a vacuum. Initial plans can give us a place to start talking about strategy, but even good plans need to be adjusted, and most initial plans can probably go out the window quite quickly, but it’s probably worth talking about having a plan in general, and how this can apply later in the game when you reassess.. Zack details the high level version of how Deck 1 works, and how it tends to win AND lose games. (Mention there is a link to the deck in our stables) Any notable/important cards in your deck? Obligatory disclaimer - We’re not telling you how to feel. We are simply discussing the results of polling on the subject of milling and stating why we feel the way we do. Millstone An alternate way to win, also a way to fuel your graveyard (ie your second hand) What is Milling? This tends to be especially true for newer players. I know I used to feel this way when I first started playing Magic. I also used to look at the top card of my library after mulliganing, I don’t do this anymore. To the folks out there, do you look after mulliganing? Ryan’s Dad: story about using Millstone I want to possibly convince folks out there that this isn’t that bad, and could even be a good thing. Here’s how I convinced Zack Some players really get upset when they get milled or Cards taken with Gonti/Grenzo Ryan asked these questions Why are you sad when you get milled? Do you feel sad when you don’t draw a particular card during a game? Would you feel differently if the cards went to the bottom of your library instead of your graveyard? How would you feel if you could start with half of your deck in your graveyard? The mental energy you’re expending on thinking about the cards you could have drawn (or got milled), could be put to better use, like making a plan. Any number of possibilities could have been. Due to variance there is no way to guarantee the cards that would have milled would have been drawn.(Maybe a better way to phrase this is, it kinda just changes where your opponent cut your deck) The more you know what’s in your graveyard, the more you know about the other cards in your deck Zack said in general being milled made him feel slightly sad about the possibilities that could have been. Cards in hands are actual possibilities In this same way, cards taken with Gonti aren’t the same as cards taken with Blatant Thievery/Expropriate, cause you didn’t invest any resources like card/mana into the things being stolen Cards in your graveyard are a resource as well. Your opponent could cast Patriarch’s Bidding or Exhume for example Sometimes it does sting if your deck is built on a specific 2 card combo. I try not to rely on specific cards, because there’s no guarantee you’re going to see them during a game, unless you run a LOT of tutors, and that’s something I don’t frequently do. Being milled isn’t the same as discard This conversation started after a game with Zack and Ryan where Ryan played Mesmeric Orb and Zack expressed annoyance about being milled. What is the stable? It’s a place to keep the decks you play often, up-to-date. This is not for ALL of your decks (unless you only have a few decks) I have like 25 decks, and I’m not proposing to keep up with all of them, I’m proposing that you select the true gems, the ones you you always have fun playing, and thinking about This can be nice if you have decks in many different tools, such as Tappedout, or Archidekt, or the new Scryfall Deck Editor It’s a single place you can access that has all your decks in one place. There’s a social component to the stable as well. I propose that folks can share their Stable with other people, and that it can be a way to let other people (in person and on the internet) get to know them. A business card that you can hand to other folks that says “I’m this kind of Commander player!” I like the idea of doing this because I am constantly updating decks, but don’t have a way to track those changes and if they are improvements or not. Ryan - Historical Data! The chances of getting a deck exactly the way you want it the first time you play it is pretty slim. This lets you track what’s working for you and not working for you. A way to force us to consider upgrading decks Summary - This probably isn’t a new idea, and it’s probably something that some of you out in audience land already do. I just wanted to establish this idea, and get some conversation around this topic, maybe also establish some common terms we can use in this discussion. Also, I’m really bad at updating decks, and we’ll see this when I get to my personal Stable later this episode This is player dependant, but the more decks in your stable, probably the less attention you can give to each deck. Probably no more than 10 depending on how often you play. How many decks should be in a stable? Spreadsheets Obvs! Granted, I had a great starting point to launch from (Thanks Jumbo Commander). This deck is really fun, and I play it all the time, and it deserves some attention. Braids, Conjurer Adept 12/18/2015 Last, and definitely not least. This is probably my oldest deck, that I still consistently play. One of the reasons I’m so hesitant to update this deck is that it is one of my favorites, and it’s really hitting the sweet spot between flavor and function, and I don’t want to mess it up. If I keep the historical data, I can always go back to a previous version of the deck, and I don’t have to be scared of messing it up Jaya Ballard, Task Mage Ryan’s Stable Available to the public here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Wkry2pB66Xpj8BR2YfHsKysLMmAq5oV8K58UIYpoVUs Created when Modern Horizons released Yawgmoth, Thran Physician Created when War of the Spark released Tatyova, Benthic Druid Created when Guilds of Ravnica released. A lot of new players have trouble knowing how to make their decks better. How often are you playing the deck? How often do you find yourself with dead cards in hand? How do you know when it’s time to upgrade your decks? Decide if you’re completely scrapping the deck, or just adding a few cards Is there a new Commander that you want to helm the deck? That’s closer to an overhaul Decide what your Goal is going to be: entire deck overhaul vs. small upgrade Maybe you save up for big upgrade, but there are plenty of good cards that are cheap AND good! Trade in old cards that you may not want anymore. A lot of stores give you a bonus if you take store credit over cash. Updating your deck doesn’t have to cost a TON of money. Give the deck several plays with the new cards before you decide if you like them or not. Ask playgroup if you can start a game with a couple of new cards in your opening hand. Ryan - I keep the last 20 or so cards originally cut from the deck, WITH the deck, so that I can always try out something new, when I find something that isn’t working. Play it Focus on where you deck is weak. Do this by asking yourself some questions What decks have been problematic / have I been losing to? How have those decks been winning? Mana troubles? Never having enough cards in hand? Losing to problematic Artifacts/Enchantments? How has my deck been losing? Do you often find yourself with a bunch of high casting cost cards in your hand. Maybe it’s time to lower your curve Are there times when your deck isn’t doing what it’s supposed to - why is that? If built with slot theory and deck is doing okay - swap slot for slot (Ie. Removal for Removal) If you switch cards 1 for 1 from slots write down what you swapped and when you draw new card think if you’d rather have new card or old card. If you’re getting decimated - reevaluate which slots you have, and how many cards you assign to each slot type Slot Theory When a new set comes out if you see a card you like add a note in your phone. The Talk - Ep 89 Thanks Mike Condon for the music and editing Tiffany for the logo/icon @MothershipGames - 09:15, 26:28, 44:05 @commandcast - 32:27 @edhrec - 34:51 @JoshLeeKwai - 36:07 @dpkrausejr - 37:28 Ep 89 Community Spotlight: Main Topic - The Talk (The Decks and the Dice) Why have the talk? To make sure everyone is on the same page regarding what kind of game is being played. To ensure everyone has fun. I think if you ask most people, they would say they have a better time playing Magic when the games are close/even Anecdotes about the talk. What do you think the power level of your deck is from 1-10? Are you running combos? How fast do you usually win? How many turns do your games usually last? Are you playing mass land destruction Questions you can ask: People will also see you as someone who strives to play balanced/Fun games. The more you have the talk, the easier it will be to bring up in the future. Why might it be hard to have the talk Anxiety New people Pubstomping Definition: When an organized team of friends/clan members plays against a team of "pubs" - random people who join a public server. Does this happen? Probably, but not nearly as much as one might think. I think sometimes CEDH players can get a bad wrap in this regard. I don’t think there are CEDH Boogey men out there, trolling events, trying to ruin folks days. We should all remember: “Magic is a game for everyone”, there are all kinds of ways to play and just because one playstyle doesn’t fit you, doesn’t invalidate it or mean others don’t enjoy Magic in that way. Evaluating your decks On average most people I’ve played say their decks are between six and seven on the power scale. This happens because there really is not standardized scale by which to measure your deck. This is a very hard problem to solve, because there are so many nuances in the power level of a deck I don’t think people are intentionally dishonest about the power of their decks. Maybe in their playgroup their deck does amazing and they think it’s higher Perhaps it is the opposite and they do not as well in their playgroup despite their deck being very powerful. Maybe because the rest of their playgroup has super ultra mega powerful decks Ryan - Grenzo, 6-6.5 Deck link: https://www.topdecked.me/decks/9b3fdf2b-82ca-4f6a-b859-9e7feae1e5ef Has a theme, but plays some cards that are kinda bad, like Dark-Dweller Oracle Has some powerful cards, like Mindslaver, but no way to recur it. Also has Gauntlet of Might, which can get out of hand pretty quickly Also, playing cards like Indomitable Creativity, which has high variance But can also just draw Insurrection and win a game Deck link: https://www.topdecked.me/decks/d5fbf9d2-2a66-4d44-afc2-904954f16ea5 Zack - Saheeli 7.5 - 8 Ryan and Zack talk about how they would rate their decks I’ve often found not all decks people play feel as powerful as they say, sometimes they are lower or higher. How to prepare for playing with people you don’t know at your LGS or big event Bring decks of varying power levels. Often times I let the other players know about 3-4 decks I have with me, and I see if they are interested in playing against any of them. Be prepared to have the talk. I’d even go so far as to say that YOU dear viewer should try and initiate the talk. Ryan will initiate the talk Zack will introduce himself Ryan asks Zack questions (Zack is playing Muldrotha) Ryan will eventually suggest he plays his Gonti deck (Ryan and Zack roleplay a talk) Trying to make an inviting event that caters to newer/more casual players is GOOD for our format. It will bring new players to our community, and that is a win for everyone. Mothership Games, our LGS, now has a two days set aside for EDH one more competitive / combo and one for newer more casual players Summary. We all want to play GOOD games of Magic. Even though it may be a little outside your comfort zone, having the talk can lead to a better overall experience, and even opens up lines of communication after the game, to discuss how it went. The more we all take measures such as having the talk, the better the game gets for everyone involved, it’s a win-win.
