Recorded on 6 March 2025 for ICMDA Webinars.Dr Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Dr Mark PickeringThe founding General Secretary of CMF UK, Dr Douglas Johnson, said ‘it is inexcusable for a Christian to neglect history'. The Bible itself is essentially an historical narrative, recorded so that we, many years later, can ‘learn the lessons of history' – to be encouraged by the examples (and frailties) of those who went before us, and perhaps to avoid some of their mistakes. What can we learn from those UK Christian doctors, nurses and students who changed history in the 19th and early 20th Century?Dr Mark Pickering is the Chief Executive of CMF (UK/Ireland). He is based in London where he also works as a secure environment GP (in prisons and similar institutions). He previously led student ministry for CMF UK and for ICMDA. In these roles he has developed many partnerships with organizations in student ministry, bioethics and advocacy, global mission and evangelism/apologetics. He has a long-term interest in apologetics, particularly around biblical reliability, Islam and science/faith issues. To listen live to future ICMDA webinars visit https://icmda.net/resources/webinars/

From representing Yoko Ono to winning class action lawsuits on behalf of actors and musicians, Neville Johnson and his partner Douglas Johnson (no relationship) have built one of the most interesting and successful entertainment law practices in the nation, specializing in representing “talent” as opposed to the business side of the industry.  Join Rahul and Ben for a fascinating discussion with Neville and Doug, as they describe how they got their start in this practice, recount some of their most interesting cases, and talk about trends in entertainment law resulting from new technologies. About Neville Johnson - Senior PartnerWebsite: Johnson and Johnson, LLP Law Firm | Johnson and Johnson, LLP (jjllplaw.com) Professional Experience:Neville L. Johnson graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California, Berkeley (1971).  He received his law degree from Southwestern Law School (1975), graduating near the top of his class.  He has tried over 28 civil jury trials and over 70 civil trials and arbitrations without a jury. Elder, a leading expert on the law of privacy, who published the following special dedication in his treatise, Privacy Torts: To Neville L. Johnson… who has led the charge, often successfully (and always creatively and with great passion) in exposing some of the worst outrages of media newsgathering. Neville ranks with Brandeis and Warren as the great defenders of privacy. Trinity College hosted its 64th annual Christmas Festival of Lessons and Carols in the Chapel on Sunday, December 10, marking the beginning of the holiday season for the Greater Hartford community. Lessons and Carols is offered to all as a moment of comfort and hope. In its recounting of the Christmas story, the service involves the reading of nine lessons, each followed by the singing of a carol. Contributions to a freewill offering supported students in need, as well as international humanitarian relief efforts. This year's special Bicentennial event featured a newly commissioned work by David Hurd, a setting of a portion of Psalm 96, “Sing to the Lord a New Song,” dedicated to Trinity College Board of Trustees Chair Lisa Bisaccia '78 and Robert Naparstek, whose generosity has supported the Chapel Music Program. The program also featured music by alumni and community composers Paul Lindsley Thomas '50; Dudley Buck, Class of 1859; Robert Edward Smith, Chapel composer-in-residence since 1979; and Douglas Bruce Johnson, professor of music, emeritus. Douglas Johnson and his life partner, Akilah Love, founded The DNA Brand in 2019 in Toronto, Canada. Since his formative years, Douglas, a former Elite Basketball player and restaurateur, always had a strong passion for entertainment and community building due to being an athlete and leader amongst his peers and life experiences in his native, Nova Scotia, Canada. Akilah, a socialite and serial entrepreneur, also had a strong passion for events and community, likely due to her upbringing in a family of politicians and community leaders. From childhood, and independently from 1987 to the present, Akilah has been involved in community initiatives in collaboration with government programs both in Barbados and Canada. In 2017, Douglas and Akilah joined forces and vision in business by way of restaurant co-ownership and an entertainment management company. Soon after, it was clear both Douglas and Akilah were aligned and motivated to serve: in 2018 The DNA Brand would be born to help improve the lives of others in mind, body, soul and finances. To share knowledge locally, nationally and globally, Doug and Akilah created multiple divisions of The DNA Brand, including DNA Health, DNA Financial Network and The DNA Brand Foundation. Through the Health and Financial Division, DNA will create mentoring programs with an emphasis on Health and Financial Literacy for those in under-resourced and underserved communities. The DNA Brand is currently operating in service locally in Atlanta Georgia, Canada, specifically Toronto and Nova Scotia, and in Accra, Ghana supporting a village and founding a school called The DNA Brand Academy. In the fall of 2023, DNA will also adopt a school in Barbados and offer mentoring, and financial and social support to help the students to reach their peak potentials. March of 2023 will not just be Douglas' and Akilah's birthday month, but this month will also commence the first inaugural DNA Diamond Ball, which will serve as the official USA launch for The DNA Brand and its divisions, most importantly for The DNA Brand Foundation inspired by amazing children in Ghana and created to make significant impacts worldwide. In the final episode of the series, Helen Skelton hears from people who are working to make the clean energy future fair and representative for everyone. She chats with National Grid's Fleur Callender who shares the view from the United States and Alice Cross from the UK's Sustainability First. Alice outlines how they've been working with activists, artists, policymakers and communities to understand people's concerns and needs for the energy revolution. Then it's off to Sheffield City Centre where councillor Douglas Johnson tours us around the innovative Grey to Green project. This urban redevelopment scheme has combined arts, sustainable drainage, biodiversity planting and wellbeing spaces to create a model for the cities of our future. Could this sort of scheme be the answer to making our cities cleaner, safer, more environmentally-friendly places? It's surely part of the puzzle as we work out how to fit clean energy into communities and towns. Fergus Hynd oversees National Grid's social initiative Grid for Good. He introduces the scheme which partners with charities to bring talent from under-represented and diverse backgrounds forward. Then the inspirational Taniya Bukhari, an Engineering Assistant, shares her experiences of overcoming challenges to shine in a placement she loves at National Grid. If you'd like to keep track of it all, you can visit nationalgrid.com to follow our world's clean energy story as it happens. Contemporary media as well as the leadership of the Democrat Party have become incredibly aggressive now that the party controls all levels of the federal government.  There is apparently a conscious decision to simply use that newly grasped authority to 'declare as law' those measures which have previously failed. The expectation is that an accommodating media will simply echo the 'establishment of these precious new rights' and demand acquiescence. This enactment of dead provisions appears to be an essential part of progressives political hegemony. Legally and culturally speaking, it is making law by proclaiming a ‘Zombie Apocalypse'. Measures which were dead and defeated are simply dead no longer.  In this episode of Life Matters, Commissioner Johnston again interviews Douglas Johnson, Federal Legislative Director Emeritus of the National Right to Life Committee as he explains how another intentional falsehood is being put forward by the abortion industry and its advocates. They are seeking to revive a long-dead proposal to amend the Constitution - the Equal Rights Amendment. The Constitution is very clear that amendments may be offered but they must first pass through approval by two-thirds of the state legislatures. When first proposed in the 1970s, the ERA never did get the necessary two-thirds of the states approval, and in fact, when it was realized that the ERA would enshrine abortion in the language of the Constitution, many states rescinded their previous approval. Even when attempted again in the 80s the effort failed. Roe v. Wade had never actually drawn from the Constitution. It made up an abortion right from the 'emanations from the penumbra' (a shadow) of the Constitution. Now, with abortion support in the White House and in both houses of Congress, the strategy has changed and their desire is simply to proclaim that the ERA never died, that there are no limits placed on its passage, and their goal is simply to proclaim it a fiat accompli - that the Equal Rights Amendment is law. They have great hope that the media will simply repeat this clearly false view of the Constitution and its amending. This attempt to create a “walking zombie” of law should be humorous on its face, but sadly there are many naïve and committed ideologues who believe that if they want something they can simply proclaim it to be true, and the dominant media culture will affirm that. Their hope is that natural opponents can simply be silenced!  These battles for objective truth and reality do indeed impact our laws. It is crucial that conscientious individuals be ready with the facts to dispel the myths which are so often used to bring about unjust laws. Just such objective facts will be necessary in order to finally bury the zombie known as the ERA.

In this episode of Life Matters, Brian Johnston explains how much of abortion rhetoric and abortion law is actually based on falsehoods.  Pro-life individuals are aware of the absurd assertion that, ‘there is no human being killed,’ when a baby dies in a human abortion. But those familiar with objective facts and self-evident truths know that this is simply an assertion of ideology, separated from objective science, and biological fact. When looked at objectively and dispassionately, it is strikingly clear that in a human abortion, the life of a unique human being is taken.  The actual nature of the Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton decisions, which together legalized unlimited abortion in the United States, is rarely examined in any depth. Brian‘s upcoming book: The Evil Twins Roe and Doe: How the Supreme Court Unleashed Medical Killing, is a deep dive into the objective facts and clear statements of both cases, which the dominant media culture and even many pro-life individuals refuse to examine.  In this episode of Life Matters, Commissioner Johnston interviews Douglas Johnson, Federal Legislative Director Emeritus of the National Right to Life Committee as he explains how another intentional falsehood is being put forward by the abortion industry and its advocates. They are seeking to revive a long-dead proposal to amend the Constitution - the Equal Rights Amendment. Life Matters

Is this episode of Life Matters Brian interviews National Right to Life President, Carol Tobias. They discuss in depth the dramatic change to the culture of Washington D.C. in the agenda of the Biden/Harris administration. President Biden has made a commitment to undo all of the pro-life gains won by President Donald Trump. But in addition to that, Biden intends to go much further. Up until his decision to run for president, Senator Joe Biden had supported the Hyde amendment which prohibits federal funds from being used for abortion or to promote abortion. Biden’s dramatic decision to flip-flop on this final pro-life issue, places him firmly in the camp of radical abortion advocates. He now supports unlimited advocacy and funding for all abortions.  In addition, the famous Mexico City policy, a policy of the Ronald Reagan era, has now been rescinded by the Biden administration. It is critical to note that the Mexico City policy which deals with the international funding of abortion and his promotion through various UN and other outlets, prohibited organizations from forcing abortion ideology onto various countries around the world. These countries, formerly referred to as “third world,” are often blackmailed into both accepting abortion into their laws and culture, but also funding agencies which promote abortion throughout their population. “Population control” advocates use abortion as one more form of birth control and are more than willing to use the power of the United States government and the United Nations and multiple billions of dollars in leverage, to force nations to go against their traditional values and religious sentiments if they are to except other foreign aid. This is a form of abortion colonialism. Carol speaks at length about other issues that could bring great change should they be adopted. The possibility of court packing, i.e. appointing a number of new pro-abortion justices, creating new states out of the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico - each of these acts would give the Democrat party two new United States senators cementing abortion policy into federal law for decades to come.  Carol also discusses the resurrection of the long dead issue, Equal Rights amendment. Constitutionally speaking, the attempt to amend the constitution with ERA failed in the 70s and a second attempt to revive it in the 80s came to nought.  (Brian discusses this in much greater detail in his upcoming interview with Douglas Johnson). Pro-life advocates will need to be particularly attentive to action items that impact the federal government contacting their representatives in raising their voice as the new radically pro-abortion Biden administration seeks to implement itself on our nation. It is our job to raise our voices on behalf of those that cannot speak for themselves

In this episode, I grill Doug Johnson on the secrets to his extraordinary success in recruitment.  Listen in as I persuade him to reveal the strategies, skills and techniques he's developed over the years that have enabled him to generate millions of dollars in placement fees. Old-school sales and recruiting techniques are coming back in vogue during the Covid-19 environment.  Out of necessity, recruiters are going “back to basics” with their business development and candidate generation.  Unfortunately, these classic skills have become something of a lost art. Especially if you started your recruitment career after 2003 (when LinkedIn was founded).  Most recruiters would profit from the wisdom and insights of a veteran who developed their skills pre-LinkedIn era.  Doug is the president of Valor Partners, an executive search firm he founded in 2002. Doug specializes in recruiting leaders in sales, marketing and strategy within enterprise software. He has a particular focus on working with and placing female leaders in tech. Over the last 20 years Doug has placed 600 high performers with companies such as SAP, Microsoft, Salesforce.com, Honeywell, GE, and numerous startups. Prior to founding Valor Partners, Doug spent six years at MRI where he was a five-time top ten account executive of the year, and two-time national account executive of the year. Episode Outline and Highlights [2:40] Doug's “accidental” career in recruiting and why he wanted to quit every day for the first 3 months!  [7:10] Doug shares his technique for getting referrals - a skill he developed in the pre-LinkedIn era which is just as relevant today. [11:18] Doug's recruiting call script which is effective in opening conversations with potential candidates [19:10] How Doug went from a rookie to billing $1M two years in a row - the critical success factors. [25:24] An insightful perspective on why the “generalist is dying.” [32:20] The monumental challenge faced when he decided to go out on his own.  [39:29] Doug's take on our current market and how best to get through this. [46:15] How do you convince a client on why paying an engagement fee makes sense? [51:56] Doug's story about summiting Mt. Kilimanjaro, and how this experience is transferable to the recruiting business. Doing it Old School - How to be Good at Getting Referrals  Recalling the early years of his career that started in 1997, Doug shared the story of how they looked for referrals before LinkedIn or even before the internet was widely used in the recruitment industry.  “Let's also remember that way back when you and I got started, the internet was not necessarily a thing. Cell phones were not a thing. LinkedIn wasn't even an idea. So when I started, I would have to go home at night and I would have to do my research where I had an internet connection… If I wasn't doing my research at night, [the office] had this big thick book called Corptech and there were about three volumes of it to find companies. I had to look through and find these phone numbers and then call.” He added, “It wasn't like I could flip through LinkedIn and find the next sales guy in Chicago or the marketing guy in Detroit. I couldn't do that. So you had to get really really good at asking for referrals and networking and getting information from the people so you could maximize these phone calls.”  Listen further as Doug revealed his secret on how to be good at getting referrals in this episode. Douglas Johnson Bio and Contact Info Doug founded Valor Partners in 2002. He has been working with enterprise software executives to identify and recruit the people who lead, build and manage top sales and marketing teams for over 20 years. His expertise is in SaaS software.  His practice focuses on helping his clients with the unique challenges of building the revenue side of their businesses- sales, marketing and customer success.  He has one other unique aspect to his practice; working with and placing female leaders in tech. "Discretion, exceptional judgment and over 20 years of industry expertise (with a heavy dose of humor and humility) allow me a network, relationships and market knowledge rivaled by very few people." Away from the office, Doug is a single dad with two kids, Grace and Murphy, and two dogs (Ash and Moose). He is a competitive tennis player (played in college), he runs Spartan races and is a year and a half into learning to salsa dance (so frustrating). He feels very fortunate that his career in search has allowed him the opportunity to travel the world with his kids- highlights have included reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro and watching the Northern Lights in Iceland.
