Pioneer players were met with the news that there would be NO cards banned or restricted in Wizards of the Coast's annual ban announcement this week, deflating a lot of people's hope that the format would have some new life breathed into it after a draining season of qualifiers against Mono Green devotion, Rakdos, and various combo and control decks. We at The First Pioneers had been taking it easy this summer making content so we could focus on self care and enjoying a slower pace of life for once, but after this announcement we could stay quiet no longer. There is a lot we want to say about the silence and deaf ear being turned to competitive formats in Magic the Gathering, and we're sure many of our followers would like to hear their concerns voiced as well. We also go over some of the early spoilers from Wilds of Eldraine and talk about what kind of cards we'd like to see printed (or reprinted!) in the set. Season 18, Episode 26: Weekly Roundup Lawson Zandi returns to break down the results from Pro Tour: Barcelona, where The One Ring and Orcish Bowmasters put on dominant displays. Big mana was the big winner, with Tron and Amulet Titan harnessing The One Ring to tremendous effect while going way over the top of midrange and control players who had planned to outduel Rakdos Scam. And as for Rakdos itself? The most popular deck was also among the winningest decks, making it a ripe target for action in Monday's upcoming B&R window. There's plenty to unpack this week, as we take stock of the current state of the format and speculate where Modern can go from here. We also take a look at Wilds of Eldraine, analyzing the first batch of sneak peek preview cards. Like our content? Support us on Patreon and join our brewing community! Dom Harvey is here! Coming off an amazing top 4 run in Pro Tour The Lord of the Rings, we're talking about tournament prep, bringing amulet to a Rakdos-infested field, and wow man we talk a lot about Tron in this episode. Thanks as always to Wave Sunray for our music!
This week Dave, Shane, and Stan go through the biggest things we learned from the Modern PT last week in Barcelona. It might feel like Rakdos and Tron led the story (and they did) but there's a lot of other things to be learned from what happened. What do we think about The One Ring's win rate? How many decks out of the top 80% of the meta had winning records? How much more can we talk about Rhinos? The answers and what we think they mean might surprise you. • Only 10 Decks Had 50%+ Win Rate • The One Ring Might Not Be Broken • But Grief Probably Is Become a citizen of The Dive Down Nation!: http://www.patreon.com/thedivedown Show the world that you're a proud citizen of The Dive Down Nation with some merch from the store: https://www.thedivedown.com/store Check out our sponsor Barrister and Mann! https://www.barristerandmann.com/ Use coupon code THEDIVEDOWNM23 for 15% off your first order of some incredible fragrances, soaps, beard oils, and more. Rakdos scam has risen to the top of the post-LotR modern heap, riding the mighty Orcish Bowmasters to victory against a slew of One Ring decks. What's the best choice in the new meta? Could it possibly be Rhinos (no) Thanks as always to Wave Sunray for our music.
One of the great things about Pioneer is that new decks are still being discovered every season. While it might now be at the same frequency as the format's early years, you can still count on things to be shaken up from time to time. Color combinations of all types have found strategies to play, and since we finished most of the land cycles, mana bases have never been better. But not all color combinations have been so fortunate. For every Rakdos or Azorious archetype, color combinations like Orzhov (BW) and Golgari (BG) have few or none. In this week's episode the First Pioneers want to get to the bottom of the reason why not every Guild combination is created equal. We focus solely on those forgotten colors with very few or no playable archetypes in Pioneer and discuss what we think their identity should be. We also go over what Wizards of the Coast needs to print in those colors in order to make them viable. Season 18, Episode 23: Brew Session (Archfiend of the Dross) + Flashback (Invasion of Gobakhan) Archfiend of the Dross burst onto the scene at DreamHack Dallas, where cftsoc unleashed a devastating combo with Metamorphic Alteration that took the tournament by storm. Turning an opponent's creature into a copy of Archfiend, without access to Oil counters, means instant death on their upkeep. The one two punch of a 6/6 flier for 2BB, paired with a blue two drop, harkens back to the days of Dimir Inverter, when the unique combo-control strategy menaced the Pioneer format while racking up an impressive 47% win rate. Excitement for the Archfiend combo has abated in recent weeks. Despite the heavy scrutiny among dedicated Pioneer players, there is still no stock build of the combo that has delivered consistent results. While cftsoc splashed blue into a mostly Rakdos shell, others like laa11 and DJeffMTG have pushed for a dedicated Dimir build. Then there are weirder options like Golgari Fight Rigging, or even Jund with Harmless Offering — all decks predicated on the promising observation that Archfiend of the Dross is a powerful standalone card. This is a combo that should work, and it's a great mystery why the new Inverter has so far failed to live up to its billing. Today on Faithless Brewing, David and Cavedan put on their sleuthing caps to get to the bottom of the mysterious missing demon. We look at eight different Pioneer builds with Archfiend, some featuring Metamorphic Alteration, and others not. We also review our testing results with Invasion of Gobakhan, which snagged David a nifty 5-0 trophy with a unique aggro brew. Like our content? Support us on Patreon and join our brewing community! This week on Mythic Cast Mikaela sits down with The One Jame to discuss Rakdos in Pioneer and Explorer Follow
We're talking pioneer! Polukranos is here, blocking fliers and generally making everyone's life miserable against monogreen. We've also been Magma Opusing, Lotus Fielding, and Rakdos'ing and we share what we've picked up over the last couple weeks. Thanks as always to Wave Sunray for our music!
Regionals weekend has come and gone and the storyline has big plot twists at the end of standard season. Blade of Shared Souls makes its debut and Rakdos reanimator finally comes into its own. We're breaking down what has proven to be a fantastic standard format. Thanks as always to Wave Sunray for our music!
Collins is back! (again)And this time he's sharing his takes on standard in the run-up to US Regionals. We go over your best bet between Rakdos and Grixis, his preferred build of monowhite, and everywhere you can get an edge in this format. Thanks as always to Wave Sunray for our music!
With Shadows over Innistrad (kind of) coming out on Arena and an upcoming Explorer qualifier season, we take a look at Magic's oddest format, where some pioneer decks are allowed to rampage untouched, and others are missing key pieces that keep them from existing. Can anything keep up with Rakdos cards? Probably not, but we talk about the options! Thanks as always to Wave Sunray for our music!
The Gang collects their breath, but quickly realize there is more to be done in the castle, like what to do with Trudi (again). Bruno looks for a deed, Lucky determines how much stuff is worth, Mammoth cuts to the meat of it, and Mina didn't know the song. Deep into the castle now, the Gang makes some startling discoveries. They also fall into a classic blunder. Shane and Dave are totally blindsided by this week's Pioneer bans — especially since they happened after we recorded this ep. But don't worry, we use the power of technology to travel into the past and add a segment of hot reactions and speculation on what's next for Pio. After that, we continue with our regularly scheduled episode breaking down the Modern $10k at DreamHack Dallas and diving into Pioneer's most mid deck — Rakdos Mid! Shane hates all the creatures. Dave loves all the spells. Stan loves having a week off.
