In honour in Jim Steinman, we've reworked our original Bat Out of Hell: the Musical Show History episode script to bring you a more detailed timeline of events leading up to the creation of this rock 'n' roll night at the theatre! Bat Out of Hell is a post-apocalyptic rock and roll love story. Set in a dystopian future, the island of Manhattan; renamed Obsidian, has floated out to sea and is now under the reign of Falco; the tyrannical ruler set on ‘revitalizing' the city. Living in the abandoned subway tunnels underneath the city are a group of genetically-altered teenagers, known as The Lost, who are frozen at the age of eighteen. When Strat; the reckless, rebellious leader, meets Falco's sheltered daughter, Raven on the eve of her eighteenth birthday, the stars align and they fall head first into the wonder of first love.

Closing shows are just part of the big, beautiful cycle of musical theatre. And yet sometimes those closings are so sudden that they defy explanation. Such was the case last fall with the North American tour of Bat Out of Hell - The Musical. While playing its opening stint in Toronto, the show’s producers announced that the multi-city run would shutter its doors before even reaching its second city. Left in the lurch were dozens of performers, including this week’s guest Emilie Battle. Emilie was a member of the original off-Broadway company of Dear Evan Hansen understudying the role of Alana Beck. But in the last twelve months, she’s been a part of two productions that closed prematurely Bat Out Of Hell and this summer’s off-Broadway run of an entirely new commercial musical Broadway Bounty Hunter. I asked her into the studio to share these two very different experiences, and how they were at all united. Here’s our conversation... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Christina Bennington slays the role of Raven, the young ingenue of "Bat Out of Hell: The Musical," whose father is a tyrant ruling over a post-apocalyptic city called Obsidian — formerly known as New York City. She is deeply in love with the forbidden heartthrob Strat, made forever young by an event called “the chemical wars” that froze him and his gang as eternal 18-year-olds. Raven, not frozen, has just turned 18 and longs for the freedom represented by Strat and his gang “The Lost” — she is the “Wendy” in this Peter Pan story, with Strat as a sexy, motorcycle riding Peter. The one thing they have in common is that they can both seriously ROCK.
In this episode, Connor and Catherine sit down with Julie Stark, who has recently appeared in Bat Out of Hell The Musical at the Dominion Theatre. Theme music by Simon Oskarsson and Alex Cardall for ACT Music Ldn.

Andrew Polec is currently starring in the lead role of Strat in Jim Steinman’s Bat Out Of Hell The Musical at The Dominion Theatre in London’s West End. He joins Robert to chat about the bike accident that was the catalyst for him first hearing Meat Loaf’s music and how that led to him finding his own singing voice. Andrew goes on to talk about studying 70s rock at college, setting himself on the DIY rock-band path and how Sponge Bob Square Pants helped him learn about the open auditions for Bat Out Of Hell; the show that has changed his life. And of course he takes his very own Shoot First Talk Later quiz.
This week's show was a very busy one, starting off with the one and only Levi Roots joining Ian in the studio to promote his Christmas track 'Reggae Reggae Christmas', followed by Andrew Polec and Christina Bennington from Bat Out of Hell The Musical on the phone after their recent Evening Standard Award win. Finally, Jennifer Kirby popped in to talk all about Call The Midwife, and her eyes.

A few months ago, we went over to the ENO London Coliseum to take in the theatre spectacle that is Bat Out of Hell: The Musical. It started in Manchester before moving down to London, and last weekend the entire London company started their run in Toronto at the Mirvish Theatre. Bat Out of Hell is like nothing I have ever seen...or heard. The sound system in that theatre was incredible. And there were so many people in that production, that, for the first time, I had to have help to make sure that we talked to as many of the company as possible. Theo Bosanquet, who you have heard on this podcast before, and I spoke to scores of people that night, and we hope to have the majority of that content up on our site soon. This week, I thought I would bring you the full chat I had with Sharon Sexton, who plays Sloane in the show. We talked about everything from being in such a physically demanding show, various states of dress and how a musical theatre actor can keep their voice in tact during a long run of a show that’s such a big sing.
Bat Out of Hell The Musical starts just like it’s title, and doesn’t stop all evening. I have rarely been to a musical that kicks the door down with a wall of sound as big as it does here, and then carries on. Big props to the sound department on the show. And HUGE props to the entire company of Bat Out of Hell for a belting sound you produce. The singing on this show is off the charts. And we look forward to bringing you another podcast soon about how professionals keep themselves fit, both physically and vocally, when doing such a big sing. But this week, I wanted to bring you a conversation that we haven’t had the privilege of bringing you to date, and that is from a follow spot operator. That technician that sits, not just in the gods, but above the gods, and makes sure that special is turned on so that your star is basking in glorious floodlight. It’s a proper skill and the best follow spot operators are well known within the industry. Guy Aldridge has been at the ENO for 30 years working on hundreds and hundreds of shows. I talked to him about his early career and how he got to the ENO.
