https://cartermclean.com Carter was born in San Francisco and shortly thereafter moved to Connecticut. This is where McLean listened to and fell in love with music and especially the drums. At age 10, he started his journey as a musician. Broadway wasn't even on his radar when he started working at Manny's Music in Manhattan just prior to 9/11. The self-taught musician had just wrapped up his studies at University of Colorado, Boulder and was hoping to land a gig with someone like Sting, Peter Gabriel or Paul Simon. But then, while working his shift and playing at the store, he got noticed by a vet of Stevie Wonder's band Dennis Davis and got invited to play with legendary musician Roy Ayers in Harlem. While touring with Melvin Sparks in 2002 McLean was approached to be a sub at The Lion King in NYC. This eventually lead to McLean taking over the chair at the hit show in 2011. From Charlie Hunter to the Lion King on Broadway, McLean has been busy touring and doing studio work as well as having a busy teaching schedule. In addition McLean has shared the stage or recorded with Jamie McLean, Greg Holden, Charlie Hunter, Victor Wooten, Anthony Hamilton, Bernie Worrell (Parlament Funkadelic), Fred Wesley (James Brown), Shelby Johnson (Prince), Melanie Gabriel (Peter Gabriel) Leni Stern, Matt Duke and many others. For more, subscribe to Broadway Drumming 101 here: When you subscribe for only $10 a month, you will receive behind-the-scenes access to the life of a musician who makes a living on Broadway through YouTube videos, bi-weekly podcasts, and articles on what you need to know. By inspiring individuals and connecting communities with our circus education and entertainment programs, we have a positive impact on the St. Louis area and beyond. ——— Our programs teach valuable life skills like perseverance, focus, and teamwork. Learning circus with others teaches trust, responsibility and cooperation. Perhaps the most important experience we give our participants is the opportunity to meet and interact with children from different socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds than their own. ——— We believe the path to peace is a path of cooperation and communication. Teaching children from different neighborhoods how to stand on each other's shoulders may seem like a strange way to take this path. But it's the technique we use! Circus Harmony promotes peace through pyramids, joy through juggling and harmony through handsprings. ——— About Jessica Hentoff: Jessica has been teaching and performing circus arts for over 40 years. Ms. Hentoff has been using circus arts to motivate social change since she founded the St. Louis Arches youth circus performance troupe in 1989. She created Circus Harmony in 2001 to expand youth circus opportunities for St. Louis youth. In 2009, Ms. Hentoff was named both St. Louis Arts Innovator of the Year and Outstanding Arts Educator of the Year. Ms. Hentoff is the only person to be a founding member of both the Big Apple Circus in NYC and Circus Flora in St. Louis. She serves as youth circus advisor to both the Circus Fans Association of America and the World Circus Federation. In 2014, she was honored to be the first person to receive the American Youth Circus Organization/American Circus Educators' Excellence in Circus Education Award. Jessica is the artistic/executive director of Circus Harmony where she uses her remarkable vision and use of circus arts to build character and community and to help children “defy gravity, soar with confidence and leap over social barriers.”

Episode Overview: “Sometimes it's really hard to convince yourself that you can do something until you've done it. It's okay to be afraid. It's okay to think that you're not strong enough as long as you try.”  Success doesn't always have to mean reaching those big audacious goals. It can be as simple as wanting to be better than who you were or where you were yesterday. It's alright to feel scared or second guess yourself; so long as you don't give up, you will always have the power and choice to succeed. Joining me for this episode is stuntwoman and top Ninja Warrior competitor, Jessie Graff.  A champion is never without setbacks, both physical and emotional, but with Jessie's drive to learn and grow, she continues to overcome them while shattering everyone else's expectations, including her own. Jessie's story is an inspiring one and I am excited to be able to share it with all of you so don't forget to tune in!   Episode Highlights: Jessie's early journey pursuing gymnastics to becoming a stunt double How she bounces back from pain and injury both physically and emotionally Seeing the upside of setbacks   The people she looks up to as her heroes Success shouldn't be strictly defined by solely reaching a goal How she defied her own expectations as a Ninja Warrior Her advice for those who admire her   About the Guest: Jessie Graff, one of the top competitors on NBC's "American Ninja Warrior," is a modern-day Wonder Woman, breaking stereotypes and breaking records. Graff became the first woman to complete stage 1 of the “American Ninja Warrior” Las Vegas national finals in 2016, becoming a national sensation and breaking news phenomenon. In the original version of Ninja Warrior, “Sasuke”, she is the second woman to accomplish the same feat in season 34 of Sasuke, and she is still the only woman to complete stage 2 in any version of Ninja Warrior and Sasuke. Graff attributes much of her success on American Ninja Warrior's seemingly impossible obstacles to her decade-long stunt career. Her credits include Wonder Woman, Bright, G.I. Joe, Transformers, Die Hard, The Dark Knight, and being a recurring double on Supergirl, Futureman, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Leverage, and many more. She was awarded the Action Icon Award for "Stuntwoman of the Year." Graff's journey began at the age of three when she went to the Big Apple Circus and begged the ringmaster to let her try. The experience ignited a desire to fly high and push herself beyond others' expectations. Her parents signed her up for circus gymnastics classes which led to training in various acrobatic and fitness disciplines, developing her strength, agility, and adaptability. Jessie currently lives in Los Angeles and hopes that she can serve as a positive influence and show the world that strong is beautiful.   Connect with Jessie: Website: jessiegraff.com  Twitter: @JESSIEgraffPWR Instagram: @jessiegraffpwr Facebook: Jessie Graff   Did you enjoy today's episode? After college she toured for several seasons with the Big Apple Circus as well as Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey in various roles from electrician and spotlight operator to props master and rigger. After leaving the road she came back to Detroit and fell into the event industry. She and Jennifer started their business in 2002 with a heavy focus on corporate events. They reinvented their business in 2004 and Something Fabulous was born as a Boutique Event Management & Design with Your Moment In Mind. All these are important factors in designing the experiences. Rehearsal dinners don't have to be in a restaurant. It's more about the connection and the celebration of the couple. Big ideas that don't get to make it into the wedding can be done in the rehearsal. Keep the rehearsal simple, anyone involved in the wedding ceremony. The rehearsal dinner can have more people, but you definitely don't have to invite every out of town guest. It's a personal choice and a budget choice. Though an invitation is not required, you can send one. You can invite digitally! It's a great way to save money. Welcome drinks should be considered more of a happy hour and less of a party. There are options for how it's paid for. Some couples choose to contribute a certain amount of money, or give an optional itinerary and have guests meet at a bar, or they sometimes to choose to pay for the whole thing. Really there is no right away to do the welcome drinks. When it comes to brunch, determine, first, who is coming! Some people want to pack up and head straight home the next day, and some are staying. They are usually very casual, and relaxed. And can be a rolling event, like the food is out and the guests can pop in and out when they want to within the hours of the brunch.
