Talking Taiwan
Ep 302 | Talking Taiwan Award Winner Top 5 2024 End of Year Review

Talking Taiwan

Here's our 2024 Top 5 Award Winners. 2024 was an eventful year! Related Links: https://talkingtaiwan.com/talking-taiwan-2024-top-5-award-winners-end-of-year-end-of-year-review-ep-302/ In January we headed to Taiwan to cover the Presidential election, thanks to the generous support of donors. While we were there, we covered the election from Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung. We were also able to hold two in-person podcast events where we met several of our Taiwan-based podcast guests in person for the very first time. In May we were shortlisted in the International Women's Podcast Awards Moment of Visionary Leadership category.   Then in July we brought Talking Taiwan to the 53rd annual Taiwanese American Conference East Coast (TAC-EC) where we created an on-location podcast studio and conducted 12 interviews in 3 days. We are grateful to have interviewed many of TAC-EC's wonderful speakers. And it we had the honor of interviewing Taiwan's former Vice President Dr. Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) who is best known for his excellent handling of the COVID pandemic in Taiwan. After speaking with him I came away thinking that the world would be a much better place if we had more politicians like Dr. Chen. We'll be giving first listening access to this and other select interviews to anyone donating $50 or more to Talking Taiwan.   We never know what episodes are going to make the top 5 of the year and in this episode you'll hear the story behind number 1 episode of 2024.   2024 marked a big change in the way we do things. Previously nearly all of our interviews were done remotely, but in 2024, we did a number of interviews in person, most notably the one with Dr. Linda Gail Arrigo that got shortlisted in the International Women's Podcast Awards Moment of Visionary Leadership category.   We will be incorporating more in person interviews in 2025, and Talking Taiwan will be embarking on a North American Tour taking the podcast to communities on the East Coast, West Coast and Canada. In July we will be returning to the Taiwanese American Conference East Coast, and then heading to the Taiwanese American Conference on the West Coast in San Francisco. Later on in the year we will also head north to Taiwanfest in Toronto, Canada.   Your donation can help make all of this happen. Right now It's a great time to make a contribution because all contributions made will be doubled. The first $11k we raise will be doubled thanks to our generous matching donors. To support Talking Taiwan you can make donation by PayPal or Zelle using our email address talkingtaiwanpodcast@gmail.com or Venmo @talkingtaiwan. You can also send us a check at our PO box that you'll find on our website talkingtaiwan.com/support.    Thank you for listening. Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that isn't broken, it's golden. This week Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with multi-platinum singer-songwriter, LP (@iamlpofficial), to discuss their brand new album Love Lines and highly anticipated North American Tour. For those who have not yet had a chance to listen to LP's 7th studio album, Leigh describes the songs as shiny and having a ‘brightness' to them. This tracks with LP's own statement of the album feeling like a kind of rebirth, working with a new team to create introspective songs that get really honest about LP's life experiences. There is an ease to the sound reminiscent of mellow days spent kicking back in a nice California hotel and taking stock of your life. We talk with LP about their songwriting process (a process that is wildly fast- in the time it took you to read this sentence, LP has probably written another song). We also discuss what it is like to be a musician while being visibly “the biggest dyke alive”. We chat about the challenges (and pros) of tour bus life, the horrors of being in a public relationship and going through a breakup, the unfortunate ageism plaguing the music industry (yet somehow doing absolutely nothing to hinder the careers of old white male musicians), and how LP managed to beat Warner Brothers at their own game by bringing their songs over to an indie label and becoming more successful than ever. EPISODE #949 INSIDE THE BEATLES '64 NORTH AMERICAN TOUR Richard welcomes Beatles expert Chuck Gunderson who discusses the Beatles first North American Tour in 1964 when the Fab Four played a staggering 32 shows in 26 venues in 24 cities in just 33 days. GUEST: Chuck Gunderson was raised in San Diego, California, the site of the Beatles 8th stop on the 1965 North American tour. He was too young to attend the show, but fondly recalls his older siblings spinning the records of the Fab Four as he grew, which perked a life-long love for the band. He has worked in the outdoor advertising industry most of his life although his true passion is history; he obtained his B.A. at San Diego State University and an M.A. at the University of San Diego both in the field of history. Having published a few articles over the years, Chuck turned his sights to researching and writing the critically-acclaimed, "Some Fun Tonight! The Backstage Story of How The Beatles Rocked America: The Historic Tours of 1964-1966." He has consulted on a number of various Beatles related projects such as director Ron Howard's recent documentary, “Eight Days a Week.” Chuck and his wife Christina live in Carlsbad, California and are the parents of four children, each a self-described Beatles fan. Welcome to episode 53 of The Way Out Is In: The Zen Art of Living, a podcast series mirroring Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh's deep teachings of Buddhist philosophy: a simple yet profound methodology for dealing with our suffering, and for creating more happiness and joy in our lives. In this episode, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and leadership coach and journalist Jo Confino talk about what they learned and experienced on the recent Plum Village North American Tour, which consisted of retreats (including one for climate leaders and activists) and Plum Village’s first international music tour. The two presenters reflect on how the Buddhist teachings and lessons offered by this series of public events can help people create a healthier culture of service, and deal with both personal suffering and the collective suffering of climate destruction, biodiversity loss, and social injustice. Also, what is fierce compassion and how can we practice with it? Brother Phap Huu further shares on “opening new Dharma doors”, the adaptation of old teachings to new cultures; the importance of music in engaged Buddhism and why incorporating the flavors of contemporary music matters; Thay as peace activist and poet; the message of the song ‘Little Star' (which you get to listen to!); dealing with the energy of anger; deep connection; and more. And what did Thay say when Brother Phap Huu rapped at a Plum Village festivity? While the core teachings remain present and are at the heart of everything, Thich Nhat Hanh talks about opening new Dharma doors. So there are always new ways, depending on cultural or technological changes, of reaching new audiences with the teachings.” “Thich Nhat Hanh was an environmental leader and activist for more than 50 years, and he felt deeply around the need to help the environment, to collapse the separation between us and the environment, and the importance of dealing with our suffering so that we can deal with big issues like climate change and social inequality.” “Spirituality doesn’t mean becoming a Buddhist or following a religion; spirituality is the capacity of awakening which is in everyone: learning to stop our thoughts, our running, and connect to our suffering, taking care of it, transforming. That is spirituality.” “The way out is interbeing.” “Mindfulness is a path of understanding and transformation to cultivate nonviolence, peace, awakening, and love.” “Love is regeneration.” “With our thoughts, we create the world.” “Fierce compassion is a deep, deep strength that not only can help change the world, but sustain that change.” “Anger is not the solution. Anger is an energy to recognize, to practice with; guide it through walking meditation, guide it through being with nature. Because once you realize that your energy, your emotions, are also impermanence, you know that if it goes up, it will have to come down and you can come back to the situation with a different energy. And if you have practiced for a long time, you can channel your anger right away. You make sure that your anger is not the foundation of your words, your mind, and your actions.” “In Buddhism, the deepest insight of practice is to break free from all views: to touch interbeing so that we can be free and see the truth behind all manifestations, the forms that we meet, whether it is a person, whether it is their energy… Are we meeting just their anger, or can we see beyond their anger and still have compassion and help them out of their suffering?” “There are always new ways of seeing the world, and if you’re not adapting to that, then the teachings don’t become relevant.” “Family is not just genetic blood; family is shared aspiration, shared understanding, shared support that we offer for one another, and seeing each other as human beings.” “Often people chat to hide away from things, so when they’re given silence, it allows other things to emerge.” “It’s not about forgiving the system, it’s about understanding the system. We can’t forgive a system, but once we understand it, we can transform it. It’s not about forgiving all the time.”“The present moment is your canvas and your mindfulness, and your body, speech, and mind is the paintbrush that you paint with.”
