When we first sat down with Zainab Hasnain — DJ, producer, and writer FKA ZEEMUFFIN — back in 2022, she was already doing something remarkable: carving out space as a Pakistani immigrant woman in one of the most male-dominated creative industries in New York City. We're re-releasing this conversation now because a lot has changed since then, and we think it's worth revisiting. Since this episode was recorded, Zainab has played Boiler Room, Governors Ball, and Glastonbury. She opened for Palestinian-Chilean artist Elyanna across her sold-out North American Tour. She's been featured in the New York Times and appeared in the Gap's Summer Campaign. Original music is on the way. But this conversation is about how she got here — and it's just as compelling now as it was then. We talk about growing up between Lahore and Long Island, learning the viola, falling in love with punk and hip hop, and eventually trading a career in finance and tech for a pair of turntables. We get into what it means to be a Pakistani woman taking up space in DJ culture, the parallels between hip hop and immigrant identity, how gentrification threatens the authenticity of Black art forms, and why Zainab believes DJing is, at its core, an act of empathy. We also talk about food. Because on Immigrantly, we always talk about food. Join us in creating new intellectual engagement for our audience. This week, we are re-airing one of my favorite episodes with singer-songwriter, surfer and filmmaker Jack Johnson! This interview was extra special, because it was exactly 20 years after the first time I interviewed Jack, when I was a budding, baby reporter, writing for an alt-weekly in my college town, and his music career was just getting started. Jack is an environmentalist and he tells me the great lengths he takes to reduce waste at venues and how he supports local farms when he's out on tour. Zero Waste Chef, Anne Marie Bonneau, joins the show to share her tips for a zero-waste home kitchen. Have you even dehydrated fruit in your hot car, bro? Jack has been with his wife, Kim, for 33 years and his last meal, and the story behind his song Banana Pancakes, are both inspired by their love story.Jack's new film, a documentary called Surfilmusic about his evolution from surfer to filmmaker to world renowned musician, premieres March 13th 2026 at SXSW! His SURFILMUSIC 2026 North American Tour has 43 stops from June through October, and he's being supported by G. Love and Lake Street Dive, both past guests on Your Last Meal! Jo Jo Siwa BioSnap a weekly updated Biography.JoJo Siwa's September has been overloaded with headline-making moments and public candor. Most recently, JoJo opened up emotionally on the Reign with Josh Smith podcast and in the pages of People, beaming about her burgeoning romance with Chris Hughes, the Love Island alum she met on Celebrity Big Brother UK. JoJo credits Chris with changing her entire perspective on love and weddings—she shared that, for the first time, she actually wants the full wedding experience with a ring, a first dance, and her dad walking her down the aisle. She gushed, “I'm happy. I've never wanted the future so bad. I've never, ever wanted the love that I have to just continue to grow.” Chris echoed her sentiments in The UK Sun's Fabulous Magazine, calling their connection “meant to cross paths.” This romance, confirmed in The Guardian back in June, is rapidly becoming a defining story in her personal narrative.Business-wise, JoJo is back in the major leagues with the announcement of her North American “JoJo Siwa Live” tour, which kicks off July 10 in Houston and sweeps through major cities like LA, New York, and Philadelphia. She promises audiences nothing short of an immersive spectacle—live performances, DJ sets, kids' songs, and the new Gaypop set. Her Instagram video hyping the tour went viral, but what turned even more heads was the “Dream Guest VIP” package. Priced at $900, this package landed JoJo in the social media hot seat. Fans both criticized and defended the concept, with some saying “you basically pay to work” for helping set up the stage. JoJo addressed the backlash at the GLAAD Media Awards with People Magazine, clarifying that only four Dream Guest VIPs are allowed per city to keep it exclusive, and each one will help decide the setlist, get memorabilia, and hang out with her backstage. She stressed it's about an intimate, unique fan experience, not a cash grab.Stepping beyond music, JoJo headlined the sold-out First Annual Dancers Against Cancer Charity Golf Tournament in Irvine, California, on September 11. The event brought together celebrities like Allison Holker and Leon “Kida” Burns, raising crucial funds for dancers fighting cancer, with JoJo herself serving on the charity's board. On social media, she poignantly marked the anniversary of coming out with a moving Instagram post that resonated with her massive LGBTQ+ fan base, according to AOL. She also addressed years of public bullying in an interview with Reality Tea—tracing criticism back to her time as a child star on Dance Moms and confronting internet hate head-on in her recent single “Raspy.”In sum, JoJo Siwa is in the midst of a transformative period both personally and professionally, with her relationship, bold business moves, and ongoing advocacy work all converging for what is likely a long-lasting impact on her public and private legacy.Get the best deals https://amzn.to/3ODvOtaThis content was created in partnership and with the help of Artificial Intelligence AI
A North American Tour Journal 1824-1825: The Making of a Prime Minister (Sutton Publishing, 2025) follows Edward Stanley's 1824-25 journey through North America, a formative tour that profoundly shaped his political ideals. In July 1824, Edward Geoffrey Smith Stanley arrived in New York City at the end of a month-long voyage from Liverpool. The young MP and future 14th earl of Derby had left England under a cloud. His political career was off to a rough start, and he was in love with a woman he was forbidden to marry. The lengthy tour of America that he was about to embark on--a 'banishment' as he called it--had been imposed upon him. From July 1824 into March 1825, Stanley travelled extensively throughout the eastern half of North America. He crossed mountains and lakes, journeyed up and down rivers, and trekked through pine barrens, swamps, and marshes. He travelled by stagecoach, steamboat, canoe, horseback, and sometimes on foot, studying every aspect of the towns and countryside he passed through. He was sometimes surprised, and sometimes shocked, by what he saw: the complex interactions between the Catholic French and their Protestant British neighbours in Canada; the horrifying lives of black slaves in the Southern states; the poverty of Irish immigrants in the North; the degradation of Native Americans everywhere. It left a deep impression on Stanley, shaping his future career as a political reformer and distinguished statesman. Learn more about your ad choices. Here's our 2024 Top 5 Award Winners. 2024 was an eventful year! Related Links: https://talkingtaiwan.com/talking-taiwan-2024-top-5-award-winners-end-of-year-end-of-year-review-ep-302/ In January we headed to Taiwan to cover the Presidential election, thanks to the generous support of donors. While we were there, we covered the election from Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung. We were also able to hold two in-person podcast events where we met several of our Taiwan-based podcast guests in person for the very first time. In May we were shortlisted in the International Women's Podcast Awards Moment of Visionary Leadership category. Then in July we brought Talking Taiwan to the 53rd annual Taiwanese American Conference East Coast (TAC-EC) where we created an on-location podcast studio and conducted 12 interviews in 3 days. We are grateful to have interviewed many of TAC-EC's wonderful speakers. And it we had the honor of interviewing Taiwan's former Vice President Dr. Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) who is best known for his excellent handling of the COVID pandemic in Taiwan. After speaking with him I came away thinking that the world would be a much better place if we had more politicians like Dr. Chen. We'll be giving first listening access to this and other select interviews to anyone donating $50 or more to Talking Taiwan. We never know what episodes are going to make the top 5 of the year and in this episode you'll hear the story behind number 1 episode of 2024. 2024 marked a big change in the way we do things. Previously nearly all of our interviews were done remotely, but in 2024, we did a number of interviews in person, most notably the one with Dr. Linda Gail Arrigo that got shortlisted in the International Women's Podcast Awards Moment of Visionary Leadership category. We will be incorporating more in person interviews in 2025, and Talking Taiwan will be embarking on a North American Tour taking the podcast to communities on the East Coast, West Coast and Canada. In July we will be returning to the Taiwanese American Conference East Coast, and then heading to the Taiwanese American Conference on the West Coast in San Francisco. Later on in the year we will also head north to Taiwanfest in Toronto, Canada. Your donation can help make all of this happen. Right now It's a great time to make a contribution because all contributions made will be doubled. The first $11k we raise will be doubled thanks to our generous matching donors. To support Talking Taiwan you can make donation by PayPal or Zelle using our email address talkingtaiwanpodcast@gmail.com or Venmo @talkingtaiwan. You can also send us a check at our PO box that you'll find on our website talkingtaiwan.com/support. Thank you for listening. Wishing you a Happy New Year in 2025 and beyond! Alexis Hasbrouck (a swing on the North American tour of Hamilton) is back for round two! This week Alexis talks about joining Hamilton's well established tour which was equal parts incredible and terrifying, and explains how her brain processes all the details a swing needs to know. You'll also hear about the once in a lifetime trip she and some casemates took to Alaska where they saw all kinds of wildlife, kayaked by a glacier in a torrential downpour, and most importantly THEY WENT DOGSLEDDING! And speaking of dogs, on this podcast we *do* talk about Bruno (Alexis's adorable rescue pup). Plus, Alexis takes questions from the Patreon Peeps and talks more about tour life and the people who inspire her. Alexis Hasbrouck is currently a swing on the North American tour of Hamilton and my guest for the next two episodes! Alexis has been dancing since she was three years old, studying absolutely everything: ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, pointe, musical theatre dance, contemporary, lyrical, you name it. This week, Alexis talks about the musical theatre program at Rider University (which she loved!) and taking a year off to do Cats on the Royal Caribbean Oasis cruise ship. By the time Alexis was ready to finish her last semester, COVID hit and her whole college experience moved online. While Alexis waited for the entertainment industry to open back up she found her second true love: teaching elementary school special education, which she hopes to return to someday. After leaving what Alexis describes as a very toxic atmosphere doing Cats, she joined the first national tour of Moulin Rouge and had an incredible time. She was so thrilled to be a part of it, she learned everything she could, and she never took a second of it for granted. All the while, Hamilton kept calling...
