It's been three years since Waseca police officer and father of two Arik Matson was shot while on duty. He survived, but sustained severe injuries to his brain. A new documentary follows Arik and his wife Megan Matson through the process of healing. It shows how the physical therapy was exhausting and frustrating at times, but Arik had an extra motivator. Hometown Hero Outdoors, a non-profit based in Stillwater, had promised to take him to the Bering Sea in Alaska. Arik and Megan Matson joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer to talk about the film and their family's journey.

A Minnesota nonprofit is helping law enforcement and military members and veterans with outdoor opportunities. Hometown Hero Outdoors has provided more than 2,000 outdoor adventures for military and law enforcement members in the last three years to assist in healing and building healthy relationships as members integrate back into society. The organization, which started in Minnesota has now expanded into 8 states. This summer, the organization is planning on taking Arik Matson, a Waseca Police Officer who was shot in the head, to Alaska for a waterfowl Hunt. “Hometown Hero Outdoors is putting together a special hunt to hunt, King Eider. Everything is going to be covered for him and it will be a fantastic experience and a way to give back to Officer Matson.” The organization is currently raising funds to support the trip by selling #MatsonStrong t-shirts which are available at hometownhereooutdoors.org
