In this homily given on Trinity Sunday May 31st, 2026, Father Mathias preaches on the fact that God, who is Father Son and Holy Spirit is love itself. Drawing from the Gospel, Father reminds us that God is for us and not against us; he has come to save us from our sins, not to condemn us. Father challenges to avoid a false spirituality of fear that has crept back into the Church masquerading as a traditional Catholic spirituality. He ends his homily offering a few reminders of how God relates to us in our sin for those struggling with a voice of condemnation in their hearts.
In this homily given on Ascension Sunday (May 17, 2025), Fr Mathias preaches on one of the reasons why Jesus ascends into heaven: to obtain the promise of the Father and baptize us in the Holy Spirit. This is what he died to do: to immerse us into the very life of God and to bear witness to him. Essentially, Jesus wants everyone to be baptized in the Holy SpiritAs Catholics we believe we receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit in the sacraments of baptism and confirmation. But we also believe that the sacraments are not magic and require proper interior dispositions for the graces of the sacraments to be released into our lives. Theologians call this release of the graces of sacraments of initiation as the "the baptism in the Holy Spirit" After outlining key signs that one is baptized in the Holy Spirit, Fr Mathias encourages us to ask the Lord to baptize us in the Holy Spirit.

In this homily on March 22, 2026, Fr Mathias preaches on the the raising of Lazarus and reflects with us on Jesus's response to Martha and Mary's line: "Lord if you had been here my brother would not have died." To Mary, he responds by weeping with her for Lazarus. To Martha he responds by revealing himself as the Resurrection and the Life and seeks to draw out faith. Father exhorts us to allow Jesus to weep with us when we lose a loved one and to place our faith in Jesus the Resurrection and the Life, so we might see our loved ones once more.

In this homily on September 7th, 2025, Fr Mathias preaches Part 1 of the preaching series on small groups. Father outlines reasons why small groups are a game-changer for having the humility, courage and perseverance necessary to follow Jesus to heaven. Since often the most faithful, resilient, and joyful Christians are the most supported Christians, Father strongly exhorts us to consider forming a small group, so we can flourish in the Christian life. The vision for what this looks like and how to do it is the subject of next week's homily.
In this homily on August 17th, 2025, Fr Mathias talks about the division that our faith in Jesus can cause in our families. If this happens, we are not to be surprised and blame ourselves. But we are also meant to respond with humility on how we can be a better witness. Father ends his homily with an exhortation to persevere in our faith together in our mission to set the earth on fire with the love of God.
In this homily on July 27th, 2025, Fr Mathias outlines several reasons why God doesn't give us what we want in prayer, as drawn from St Augustine and Scripture. He concludes his homily by exhorting us to ask, seek and knock for the gift that the Father wants to give us: the gift of the Holy Spirit.
In this homily given on the Fifteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time (July 13, 2025), Fr. Mathias preaches on the essence of our Christian faith: love. Our faith is ultimately about receiving the love of God in Christ and loving God and neighbor in response for the ultimate purpose of living with the God of love in heaven. Because it's easy to dismiss our neighbor and pursue the world's definition of success, Father Mathias challenges us to remember that becoming a saint (loving God and neighbor) really is the purpose of our lives. Father exhorts all of us to sincerely pray that God makes us a saint, which is one of the most important prayers we can say.

In today's episode, we shine a spotlight on Linc Thelen, a Chicago-based artist who plays a key role in Arthouse, an unscripted home design television show. Produced by Crewest Studio and supported by the nonprofit Arterial, NOT REAL ART's fiscal sponsor, Arthouse aims to bridge the gap between talented artists and everyday people, redefining how art is experienced in personal spaces. With a mission to democratize art, Arthouse empowers viewers to curate authentic artwork that aligns with their tastes without straining their budgets. The show's concept centers on eliminating intimidation in art collecting, providing local artists with a platform to showcase their work directly to buyers. To support this vision, Arthouse is launching a crowdfunding campaign to raise $150,000 to produce a full-length pilot episode. Set in Chicago, the pilot will follow an individual or family as they explore local art scenes, visit artist studios, and make informed purchasing decisions with the help of host Carmen Acosta. The campaign, running from June 10 to July 25, 2025, on Indiegogo, offers a unique opportunity for art lovers to contribute to a project that aims to transform the way we perceive and appreciate art in our daily lives. As the featured artist in the Arthouse sizzle reel, filmed in Chicago last year, Linc brings a unique perspective on how this groundbreaking initiative is reshaping the relationship between artists and the public. With a mission to connect real people with authentic art, Arthouse aims to eliminate the barriers that often separate original artwork from everyday life. Linc also shares his artistic evolution, discussing the challenges he has faced while navigating the contemporary art scene. His involvement with Arthouse reflects his deep commitment to making art accessible to everyone, not just art collectors and gallery-goers. Throughout our conversation, Linc emphasizes the importance of fostering emotional connections through art, reminding us that the true value of a piece lies in its ability to resonate with individuals on a personal level. In this homily given on May 11th, 2025, (Good Shepherd Sunday) Fr Mathias reacts to the election of Pope Leo XIV and offers some important reminders on how to properly receive him and his ministry as Catholics.
In this homily given on April 27, 2025 (Divine Mercy Sunday) Fr Mathias highlights the fact that all the lay faithful are called to be apostles of mercy to those around them. After reminding them that we need to receive mercy in order to give mercy, Father offers three tips to become compelling apostles of mercy:1) Speak freely about God's mercy in your own life2) Be merciful towards those who don't deserve it3) Confront and address the underlying reasons why you're not merciful. He ends his homily encouraging us that the Holy Spirit gives us everything we need to be apostles of mercy.
This terrific discussion with Kathleen Thelen examines the historical origins and rise of large retail chains and e-commerce platforms in the United States, tracing the parallels between the business models of early mail-order retailers like Sears Roebuck and modern companies like Amazon. Kathleen explainss how antitrust laws and the fragmented regulatory environment in the US enabled the growth of these large, low-cost retailers by making it difficult for alternative models like consumer cooperatives to gain a foothold. We focus on the reliance on low-wage labor and how the prioritizing of low prices over other considerations has become deeply embedded in the American consumer economy and, as the retail landscape has shifted with the rise of Amazon and other online shopping, she suggests that this business model remains difficult to dislodge due to the coalition of interests – manufacturers, third-party sellers, and consumers themselves – that have come to depend on these large retail platforms. The importance of the centrality of the American consumer to the US economy has significant implications for the future as factors like inflation, tighter credit, and labor organizing threaten to challenge the dominance of the current retail giants. The United States is widely recognized as the quintessential consumer society, one where huge companies like Walmart and Amazon are famous for enticing customers with cheap goods and speedy delivery. Attention, Shoppers!: American Retail Capitalism and the Origins of the Amazon Economy (Princeton University Press, 2025) traces the origins and evolution of American retail capitalism from the late nineteenth century to today, uncovering the roots of a bitter equilibrium where large low-cost retailers dominate and vast numbers of low-income families now rely on them to make ends meet. Offering a comparative perspective on the history of American political economy, Dr. Kathleen Thelen shows how large-scale retailers in the United Kingdom, Germany, Denmark, and Sweden faced a far less hospitable regulatory environment than companies in the United States, which enjoyed judicial forbearance and often active government support. As American companies grew in scale and scope, they assembled an ever-expanding political coalition that could be weaponized to head off regulatory efforts, leveraging their market strength to squeeze suppliers and workers and even engaging in outright rule breaking when they encountered resistance. Placing the rise of the Amazon economy in a broader comparative-historical context, Attention, Shoppers! reveals how large discount retailers have successfully exploited a uniquely permissive regulatory landscape to create a shopper's paradise built on cheap labor and mass consumption. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars.
