297 Sonorous rural woodland before an approaching storm

Radio Lento podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 2, 2026 61:48

Last week we took the Lento box to capture the natural soundscapes of rural Leicestershire and Rutland. Our visit coincided with the warmest May temperatures on record and as it turned out the most powerful thunderstorms we'd ever experienced. On the evening of 26 May huge storm clouds swept into the valley, centering exactly over a remote wooded area where we'd left the Lento box tied to a tree to capture the natural soundscape. An hour later the storm was still directly overhead with ear-splitting thunderclaps and fork lightning. We crossed our fingers that the mics would be alright. We collected the box the next morning. The mics survived but the box was drenched. In this episode we're sharing the hour leading up to those lightning strikes. Listening is a rare opportunity to experience the sound-feel of being within an empty rural woodland as the trees and wildlife prepare to ride out the on-coming tumult. Gain full aural immersion of this woodland soundscape with headphones or ear pods. The clarity and spatial reverberances of the spring birdsong. The 360 degree humming created by millions of tiny bees and other insects engaged in their daily foraging. Hear how a small deer picks its way over the leaf litter and pauses right beneath the tree holding the mics. Was it curious about the Lento box? Its footfalls seem to suggest it was. Pheasants can also be heard wandering the forest floor nearby, and mewing to each other in ways we haven't heard before. Baa'ings of sheep and lambs from the surrounding fields echo in the spaces between the trees. As this passage of time progresses towards the 50 minute mark the sky above the woodland has gone from a bright spring blue to the densest of heavy clouded grey. The landscape has dimmed into a premature dusk, punctuated only by intense electrical flashes. It can feel so dangerous to us even from within sturdy buildings, and yet thunderstorms and the way the wildlife respond to them with only leaves and branches for protection are all just part and parcel of life on Earth. * In the last few minutes of this 62 minute passage of time some owls can be heard hooting shortly after the first major roll of thunder cracks open the rapidly darkening sky.  ** This is Launde Park Wood Nature Reserve, an ancient woodland of 57 Hectares, managed by Leicester and Rutland Wildlife Trust.   *** Next time we'll share the next hour, but be prepared, it's one of the most tumultuous hours we've ever recorded!

Further reading: https://www.audubon.org/news/like-finding-unicorn-researchers-rediscover-black-naped-pheasant-pigeon-bird https://www.sci.news/paleontology/confuciusornis-shifan-11528.html The black-naped pheasant-pigeon: Confuciusornis: Show transcript: We're going to learn about two birds that have been in the news lately. The first is the black-naped pheasant-pigeon. The word nape refers to the back of the neck, and this bird does have a black neck. It's a dark blue-black all over, in fact, with reddish-brown wings, a red bill, red eyes, and long yellow legs. It looks almost identical to the other three species of pheasant-pigeons known, although some scientists think they're subspecies. Those three are the white-naped, the green-naped, and the grey-naped pheasant-pigeons, and if you're wondering if the spot of color on the back of the neck is the easiest way to tell these birds apart, you are exactly right. All four species are native to parts of New Guinea or small islands nearby. Pheasant-pigeons look a lot like pheasants and are about the size of a chicken, although they're actually pigeons. They live in forests and eat seeds and fruit, and while they can fly they spend almost all of the time on the ground. We don't know a whole lot about them because they're so secretive and hard to spot in the wild, although the white-naped and green-naped birds are sometimes kept in zoos. In the case of the black-naped pheasant-pigeon, all scientists knew about it was from two specimens collected in 1882. It hadn't been seen since…until September of 2022. A team of scientists visited Fergusson Island off the east coast of Papua New Guinea in September, as part of a worldwide collaboration of scientists called The Search for Lost Birds. This is similar to the Search for Lost Frogs that has been active for over a decade, discovering lots of new amphibians and rediscovering even more. The 2022 search was actually a follow-up to a 2019 expedition that had failed to find the bird, although it did make other discoveries. In 2022, the team brought more people and equipment, determined to make the best effort possible to find the black-naped pheasant-pigeon. They consulted with local hunters to find the best places to search, and talked to lots of residents to see if anyone had seen one, and spent day after day hiking through forested mountains. For weeks they had no luck. Then, in a remote mountain village, they finally met some people who were familiar with the bird. One man led them to the right part of the forest and they set up camera traps, but at that point they only had a few days left before they had to leave the island. When they checked the pictures captured by the camera traps, though, they'd found it! Two of the cameras had taken pictures and video of what were definitely black-naped pheasant-pigeons, and since the cameras were several kilometers apart the pictures were probably of different individuals. The black-naped pheasant-pigeon wasn't extinct, which means it can be protected. Habitat loss, especially from commercial logging, and feral domestic cats are the two main threats to birds in the area. The other bird we're going to talk about today hasn't been seen in even longer: 119 million years, in fact. The article about this fossil was only released a few days ago as this episode goes live. You can check the show notes for links to this article and a good one about the pheasant-pigeon too. Paleontologists discovered the bird's fossil remains in northeastern China, in fossil beds that contain incredibly well-preserved animals and plants. The Jiufotang Formation in China dates to the early Cretaceous, between about 122 and 119 million years ago, and researchers think it's from an area that was once a shallow lake surrounded by forests. Every so often, a nearby volcano would erupt and the resulting ash would fall into the lake, causing anoxic conditions that helped preserve animals that died and sank into the mud at the bottom of the lake. There are lots of fish, pterosaurs, birds, and dinosaurs among the fossils discovered, most of them small but a few quite large. This includes a type of tyrannosaur that probably grew around 33 feet long, or 10 meters. A few early mammals have been discovered too. In one case, the remains of 40 individual birds were found on one big slab of stone, and scientists think an entire flock of birds was killed by a volcanic ashfall or poisonous gases from the volcano. The newly described fossil we're talking about today was almost complete and almost completely articulated, preserved with the impression of feathers around its body. The bird has been named Confuciusornis shifan and was a little smaller than a modern crow. It had a toothless beak and a short tail, although it probably had long tail feathers. Other Confuciusornis species have been discovered with the impressions of long tail plumes. All of the Confuciusornis fossils discovered so far were birds that could fly well but probably nowhere near as well as any bird today. But C. shifan had an adaptation in its wings not seen in any other bird, living or extinct. It had a small extra bone in the wing that acted like a cushion and probably helped the wings withstand the stresses of flight. The most interesting thing about the different Confuciusornis species is that if we could go back in time and see them when they were alive, they probably wouldn't have looked unusual to most people, except to bird experts who would instantly freak out. For the most part, they just looked like birds. Some specimens show preserved melanosomes under electron microscopy that indicate the feathers were various colors including white, brown, red, and black. There's even evidence of a pattern of spots and streaks on some feathers. Their feet were adapted for perching the way many modern songbird feet are. But Confuciusornis wasn't a direct ancestor of modern birds as far as we know. Even though we have lots of beautifully preserved Confuciusornis fossils, the fossils can only tell us so much. We have a pretty good idea of what the birds looked like, but we don't know much about how they lived. One specimen was found with the remains of a tiny fish inside its body, so researchers think the birds may have eaten fish or might have just been omnivores that weren't picky about what they ate. One specimen was found with an egg beside it that was the right size to have fit through its pelvic opening, but we can't know for sure if the egg belonged to the bird or was from another bird and just happened to have settled near the dead bird when it fell in the water. Still, even though we only have fossil remains, that's much better than having no knowledge of these early birds at all. Thanks for your support, and thanks for listening!

What makes a perfect fish fry? That is exactly what I set out to explore in this episode of the Hunt Fish Travel Podcast with Sheila Pederson, president of Chef Robert's Gourmet Breading Mix. We dive into what really matters when it comes to cooking fish, wild game, and the meals that come after the hunt or the catch. I have always believed that the moment you sit down to eat what you harvested is just as important as the time spent in the field or on the water. In this conversation, we talk about why that meal sticks with you, how to keep the focus on the fish instead of the breading, and simple ways to elevate your wild game cooking without overcomplicating it. Sheila shares the 40 year history behind Chef Robert's, how it started in a Minnesota restaurant, and how it has grown into a go to option for anglers, hunters, and families who want an easy, consistent, and flavorful way to cook walleye, perch, pheasant, venison, and more. We also get into real world fishing stories, including guides cooking fresh catches right on the pontoon, and why those experiences turn into the kind of memories you never forget. From shore lunch staples to quick weeknight meals, this episode is all about making the most of what you harvest. If you have ever been disappointed by a fish fry that tasted more like breading than fish, or you are looking for a better way to cook your wild game, this episode is for you. The Tech talk to have with family over the holidays. We dive into why tracking passwords and setting up two-step authentication safely is a must—especially for seniors and elderly users. Plus we have hunting news of a rare pheasant. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka ‘BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Rare White Pheasant Harvested in North Dakota According to KFYR TV, a Minot, North Dakota hunter harvested a rare white Pheasant south of the city on December 7, 2025. 37-year-old Eric Henke of Minot first saw the bird a few years ago on his family farm. A couple weeks ago, he and six others, plus four dogs, went out for a pheasant hunt. The group flushed the bird, and it flew into some brush. It was flushed again about 10 yards from Henke. With a pull of the trigger from his Benelli Super Black Eagle II 12 gauge, the bird dropped and ran, thankful to have one of the dogs retrieve it for him. Henke is now having the bird mounted by Dakota Taxidermy in Bismarck, North Dakota. In addition to being a rare white pheasant, it also had magnificent tail feathers that measured to about 22.5 inches long. Congrats Eric Henke! The Importance of Tracking Passwords and Two-Step Authentication for Seniors and Families Why Password Management Is More Important Than Ever In today's digital world, almost every essential service requires a password—banking, medical portals, email, social security accounts, utilities, and even prescription refills. For elderly and older adults, managing multiple passwords can quickly become overwhelming. Forgotten passwords, locked accounts, and inaccessible phones can lead to stress, financial risk, and complete loss of access to critical services. Common Problems Seniors Face: Forgotten passwords or PINs Locked accounts due to failed login attempts Smartphones breaking, updating, or resetting Two-step authentication codes sent to unavailable devices Difficulty remembering complex security rules Without a proper system in place, a simple phone update can become a major crisis. What Is Two-Step Authentication (2FA) — and Why It Can Be Risky Without Backup Two-step authentication (also called 2FA or multi-factor authentication) adds an extra layer of security by requiring: Something you know (password) Something you have (phone, text message, authentication app) While 2FA improves security, it can lock users out permanently if: The phone is lost or broken The phone number changes The device updates or resets The authentication app is deleted This is especially dangerous for seniors who rely on one single smartphone. How to Set Up Two-Step Authentication the Right Way (Senior-Friendly) To avoid lockouts, seniors and families should always set up backup access options. Best Practices: Save backup recovery codes on paper and digitally Add a trusted family member's email or phone number Use authentication apps that allow device recovery Avoid using only SMS codes when possible Tip: Print recovery codes and store them in a safe, labeled folder at home. Final Checklist for Seniors and Caregivers Track all passwords in one secure place Set up 2FA with backup recovery options Share access with trusted family members Store printed recovery information safely Review passwords yearly or after major updates Final Thought - A broken phone or forgotten password should never mean losing access to your life. In this special short-form episode of the UpDuck Podcast, Tyler sits down with two guests for a raw, timely conversation about Wisconsin pheasant hunting, public land pressure, and the reality of DNR stocking. After heading out for a mid-week hunt, guest John Anderson witnesses something many hunters have only heard rumors about: vehicles actively following a DNR pheasant stocking truck and hunters shooting birds almost as soon as they hit the ground. Joined by Dave Nelson, the group breaks down what they saw, why it happens, and how it impacts fair-chase ethics, opportunity, and the overall hunting experience. This episode isn't about pointing fingers — it's about raising awareness, sharing firsthand experiences, and asking the hard questions about access, opportunity, and responsibility on public land. If you've ever hunted stocked pheasants — or have strong opinions about “truck chasers” — this one will hit close to home. Learn how to prep upland game birds for taxidermy including pheasants. Plus tired of the question "What's for Dinner?" Meal kits: are they worth it? Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka ‘BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Season 5, Episode 259 Why Proper Prep Matters: Upland Game Bird Taxidermy Basics The Do, The Do Not & Did You Know About Pheasants Upland birds taken early in the season do not make great mounts due to the fragile pin feathers. Best to mount pheasants harvested in November and December. Do not ring the neck of a possible pheasant to mount as it will stretch the neck. Cool the pheasant immediately. Wrap the feet and beak in wet paper towels. Double bag the pheasant before placing it in the freezer. This will keep the bird from drying out until received by a taxidermist. Do NOT place birds in panty hose. A panty hose causes a bird to quickly dry out during freezing making it difficult, to almost impossible, to mount by a taxidermist at a later date. How Meal Kits Compare to DIY Cooking (Pros & Cons) Meal Kit Companies: Examples - Hello Fresh, Blue Apron, Home Chef too many to mention. I have personal experience with Hello Fresh, one of the oldest of the Meal Kit Companies out there. Are Meal Kit Companies actually “Good”, like taste good? YES - There are typically close to a 100 different recipes to choose from, and the meals typically take only 30 minutes. What's included? Your proteins of choice plus delicious sides. Never liked Sweet Potatoes… Follow their easy recipes, and you might change your mind. I did! Are the ingredients Fresh? YES! They are packed in a box with ice and in packaging that keeps everything fresh, if there was ever a leak - No questions, money was returned with the option to send another meal. Cost? Is it really affordable? Depends on your spending habits. If you are someone that is tempted by “Impulse Buys” like… Ohhhh I need that, even though it's not on “The Grocery List”... Then you are like me, and every trip that keeps me out of the store typically saves me money! Costs typically range from $3 to $12 per serving, based on the service, meal plan What is my favorite part about meal kits?  1st - Learning new culinary skills! We are currently not subscribed to a Meal Kit company, however I greatly improved my skills in the kitchen thanks to them! For example, I typically strongly dislike Meatloaf… Sorry, I know it's a comfort food for many. However - Thanks to here and there subscribing to a Meal Kit service… I now make an amazing Balsamic Rosemary Meatloaf… And if you've not had my Garlic Mashed potatoes.. You are missing out! YUM! 2nd - Taking a break from the nightly battle of “What's for Supper.” They service actually helped me plan better when not using it as I realized that if I just take out some meat from the freezer on Sunday nights, than I have set us up for a successful week of “getting it all cooked” throughout the week as no one wants to throw away the most expensive part of any meal… The meat! Before you write this one off if you don't tie flies, although this is a podcast on a fly tying material, there is much more in this one. Like how to fish small flies and how to see those tiny flies on the water. But we do talk about one of the most amazing materials in fly tying—pheasant tail fibers. And it's not only for nymphs. Learn about why pheasant tail is such a magical material, how to tie a durable pheasant tail body, and how to use it on dry and wet flies as well as nymphs. Craig Matthews [42:22] is a legendary fly tier, guide, and conservationist and it is always valuable to catch his words of wisdom. In the Fly Box this week, we have these questions and more: Do I have to sight-fish in saltwater, or can I just fish my flies around likely structures? Are "hot spots" as effective on dry flies as they are on nymphs? Have you used those new clear-tip lines from Scientific Anglers for trout, and what do you think of them? Why did I not catch trout on my first day on a river, yet clean up on fish two days later? A tip from a listener on how to not lose your wading belt. Can I fish streamers for smallmouth bass upstream like I do for trout? All the videos tell me to cast at a 45-degree downstream angle. For fishing for striped bass from shore, is a 9-foot or a 10-foot rod better? What type of leader do you recommend for swinging wet flies and soft hackles? Have you ever tried to make your own amadou? What fly box should I use for my tiny nymphs? What is the best way to remove materials from a fly to re-use the hook and bead? Is there any etiquette about wading an alpine lake?

Travis & Tim talk through changing factors that contribute to bird numbers, brood sizes & bugs, insane nitrates, staying dry in wet grass, having fun with hunting buddies, hunting solo, & making goals for the season.  We also talk upland bird hunting gear head to toe, and have fun heckling each other along the way... @thebeardeduplander   Presented by: Walton's (waltons.com/) OnX Maps (onxmaps.com/) Aluma Trailers (alumaklm.com) GAIM Hunting & Shooting Simulator (https://alnk.to/74wKReb) Compeer Home (compeerhome.com) Federal Premium Ammunition (federalpremium.com/) Hunt North Dakota (helloND.com/) Lucky Duck Premium Decoys (luckyduck.com/) & Samaritan Tire (samaritantire.com/)
