"When Girls Talk Books" treads into the shadowy realm of "If You Tell" by Greg Olsen, where the truth is more terrifying than fiction. Our discussion unveils the stark realities of a household marred by abuse, where the bond between sisters becomes their lifeline. With a nod to our local Maggie Mae's Bookshop and their Easter surprises, we're reminded of the lighter moments that provide relief amidst the darkness of our main narrative. This episode is a sobering journey through deceit, manipulation, and the harrowing struggle for survival faced by Shelly's children. We navigate the complexities of unveiling such secrets and the heart-rending choices that lead to a semblance of justice, all while questioning the societal and systemic blind spots that often leave victims unheard. Most importantly, we stand in solidarity with survivors, sharing essential resources for anyone grappling with domestic abuse. From confidential hotlines to organizations dedicated to providing support, we extend a lifeline to our listeners, emphasizing the message that no one has to weather these storms alone. "Ron Franscell's 'Deaf Row' tells a darkly engrossing story with masterful, easy-flowing prose and a clever infusion of humor. The tension builds incrementally to a chilling five-star climax in which Franscell puts his well-honed skill as a true crime author to good use. It gave me goosebumps big time." —ANNE HILLERMAN, bestselling author of the Leaphorn, Chee, Manuelito mysteries "A line-up that begs to be part of a movie. Author Ron Franscell, who writes both fiction and nonfiction, creates an endearing group of old men in a gripping story of a psychotic killer." — DENVER POST "I'm a big fan of Ron Franscell's works and I consider them 'can't-miss' crime books." —CJ BOX, #1 New York Times bestselling author of LONG RANGE and THE HIGHWAY "As you read along, be sure to dog-ear the pages bursting with Franscell's gritty descriptions - a sentence, a paragraph or a page - of the silver-haired people and the gray places of rural Colorado in this raw, wintry crime novel." —ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL "A first-class mystery!" —JORDAN RICH, host at WBZ-AM/Boston "DEAF ROW is a self-aware, clever police procedural with a riveting climax, but what truly sets this mystery apart is its wonderfully realized characters. Franscell explores struggles with aging, death and friendship with poignant prose, humor and affection and has given us yet another gem of a book that's impossible to put down. I fell in love with these guys in DEAF ROW!" —CHRISTINE CARBO, bestselling author of A SHARP SOLITUDE "Ron Franscell is well-known and justly revered for his brilliant, often elegant and always suspenseful non-fiction, but with DEAF ROW he breaks new ground and creates an immediately unforgettable new fictional character — Mountain Bell — who takes his place right near the top in the pantheon of thriller heroes. If you haven't yet read Franscell, this is a fantastic place to start, in a novel of shattering power and a mystery that will take your breath away. Highly recommended!" —JOHN LESCROART, author of 19 NYTimes bestsellers, including THE 13th JUROR and THE MISSING PIECE "...an undisputed gift for storytelling." —GREGG OLSEN, #1 New York Times bestselling author of IF YOU TELL "A solid mystery that will keep readers rooting for [Woodrow] Bell and his band of retirees. For fans of Craig Johnson, CJ Box and Meg Gardiner." —LIBRARY JOURNAL "A fantastic whodunit, but that's only part of what makes it so good ... it's also a story about aging, redemption, friendship, and connection. Finishing DEAF ROW was bittersweet; satisfying, yet like saying goodbye to a group of folks I'd come to care about like family." —OIL CITY NEWS, Casper WY "By the second paragraph of Deaf Row, I was invested. ... I can't say enough about Deaf Row, except that I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it. Ron Franscell is one of our finest modern literary masters and this book proves it." —Robert Waters' KIDNAPPING, MURDER & MAYHEM BLOG "A stroke of genius ... I fell in love with these characters." —TIM DENNIS, host at Darkness Radio "Horrifying and hysterical! Smart writing and colorful characters from one of crime's best storytellers." —MYSTERYVOX From the Author "In the end, DEAF ROW is a classical mystery but it also dives into the lives of old people whose best days are behind them, whom we see every day but no longer actually notice. It's been either the blessing or the curse of my book-writing career: I just don't want to do it like everybody else is doing it. I blended journalism and novel technique in my true crime, and in DEAF ROW, I wanted to blend commercial crime fiction with a kind of literary exploration of men who have outlived their best days and who are now growing invisible to the rest of the world. So, yeah, DEAF ROW is an up-market fiction that should appeal to both suspense fans and to fans of more literary storytelling."

This one is definitely full T-Rex... There is discussion of child abuse and torture. We start off with this episode discussing the move and how Shelly figures out that it is the perfect home for her house of torture. Then we discuss the specific "punishments" (a.k.a. torture) she used on her children, husband, and others. We also discuss how Dave Knotek is just as complicit as Shelly, but there is an extra layer of fucked up to him. The ending dumassary is hilarious though, so even if you can't stomach the episode, skip to the end! From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of If You Tell comes the absolutely unputdownable and chilling true-crime story of Stella Nickell—a mother and wife who did the unthinkable… and the unforgiveable. At 5.02 pm on June 5, 1986, an emergency call came into the local sheriff's office in the small town of Auburn, Washington State. A distressed housewife, Stella Nickell, said her husband Bruce was having a seizure. Officers rushed to the Nickell's mobile home, to find Stella standing frozen at the door… Bruce was on the floor fighting for his life. As Stella became the beneficiary of over $175,000 in a life insurance pay-out, forensics discovered that Bruce had consumed painkillers laced with cyanide. A week later, fifteen-year-old Hayley was getting ready for another school day. Her mom, Sue, called out ‘I love you' before heading into the bathroom and moments later collapsed on the floor. Sue never regained consciousness, and the autopsy revealed she had been poisoned by cyanide tainted headache pills. Just like Bruce. While a daughter grieved the sudden and devastating loss of her mother, a young woman, Cindy, was thinking about her own mom Stella. She thought about the years of neglect and abuse, the tangled web of secrets Stella had shared with her, and Cindy contemplated turning her mom into the FBI… Gripping and heart-breaking, Gregg Olsen uncovers the shocking true story of a troubled family. He delves into a complex mother-daughter relationship rooted in mistrust and deception, and the journey of the sweet curly-haired little girl from Oregon whose fierce ambition to live the American Dream led her to make the ultimate betrayal. Gregg Olsen is a New York Times, USA Today and The Wall Street Journal bestselling author of nonfiction books and novels, most of which are crime-related.
This is the devastating and unbelievable story of a monster named Shelly Knotek. A mother who somehow managed to hide decades of abuse. A mother who would be called a serial killer, a psychopath, master manipulator, and a sadist. This story gained attention when Shelly's three daughters reached out to true crime author, Gregg Olsen, wanting to share their story to bring awareness to their mother's patterns and behavior. Why? Because Shelly Knotek will be released from prison in less than a month (June 2022). Gregg Olsen's If You Tell was released in November of 2019 and serves as a story of survival and a warning to all about the monster who will soon be rejoining society.

This ep's a doozy! I somehow convinced Grace Atwood to read the book If You Tell by Gregg Olsen that recounts the story of Shelly Knotek as told by her daughters and husband. To say this book will give you nightmares is an understatement. Shelly Knotek tortured two people to death all while her children watched. She lured people in by love bombing them only to turn that into the sickest form of torture and abuse. No spoilers for this one - it's truly disturbing!
Tune in for part 2 of the Shelly Knotek case and listen as her crimes, torture, and abuse unravel and catch up to her. SourcesOlsen, G. (2019). If You Tell. Thomas and Mercer.Margaritoff, M. A mother's love is something that we are born to know as a safe protecting. A mother is supposed to protect their child as it is a primal instinct to do so. However, for 3 children, they would never know their mother's love. Rather, they would only know abuse and torture. SourcesOlsen, G. (2019). If You Tell. Thomas and Mercer.

After more than a decade, when sisters Nikki, Sami, and Tori Knotek hear the word mom, it claws like an eagle&;s talons, triggering memories that have been their secret since childhood. Until now. Through it all, Nikki, Sami, and Tori developed a defiant bond that made them far less vulnerable than Shelly imagined. Even as others were drawn into their mother&;s dark and perverse web, the sisters found the strength and courage to escape an escalating nightmare that culminated in multiple murders. Harrowing and heartrending, If You Tell is a survivor&;s story of absolute evil&;and the freedom and justice that Nikki, Sami, and Tori risked their lives to fight for. This week I am reviewing If You Tell by Gregg Olsen. A true crime story of abuse, betrayal, murder, and overcoming horrible circumstances.
Stephanie Early Green is back to discuss the usual complement of light, fizzy fare! ...Okay, no: our first Most Wanted conversation is about Amazon's new Ted Bundy docuseries, Falling For A Killer. Does it succeed in subtracting Ted Bundy from all the secondary stories of grief and horror he created? Should the filmmaker have spun off another series on women in '70s law enforcement? And what exactly happened between Bundy and Molly Kendall? We KNOW what happened between Shelly Knotek and her children (and luckless boarders) in Gregg Olsen's mercilessly detailed If You Tell -- but Olsen doesn't do as much with the hows and whys as we'd like. Olsen's book reads fast, but not so fast that we didn't wonder why certain figures in this tale of gaslighting and abuse weren't taken to firmer task. (And why his editor didn't cut that awful eagle simile.) It might seem like nothing good comes out of Washington State in The Blotter Presents, Episode 130.
