154. Why a Godly Purpose Matters & Porn Recovery: The Burn and The Gift

What if one of the missing pieces in your pornography recovery isn't another tool, another filter, or another strategy? What if you need a deeper reason to live?In this episode of the Secret Habit Podcast, Shawn Bonneteau explores purpose, pornography recovery, the Hungry Heart, and the God-given gifts that make each of us uniquely equipped to live a meaningful life. After years of coaching Christian men, Shawn has seen how easily men can drift when they don't have a clear sense of purpose. When life feels monotonous, empty, or directionless, pornography can become an easy way to escape reality rather than engage with it. That's where the idea of The Burn & The Gift comes in.Your burn is what you care deeply about: the injustice, problem, or brokenness that you can't seem to stop thinking about.Your gift is what God has uniquely equipped you to bring to that problem. And when you begin connecting the two, something changes. You begin to see a reason to get up in the morning. A reason to endure hard things. A reason to live with conviction and purpose instead of constantly escaping. In this episode, you'll learn:Why purpose matters so much in pornography recoveryHow a lack of purpose can leave men vulnerable to drifting and escapeWhat Shawn means by your "burn"How to identify the injustices and problems that deeply move youHow to recognize your God-given giftsWhy your purpose is bigger than simply choosing a career or jobHow your gifts can be used to fight the things you burn forWhy discovering purpose can help you live a more colorful, meaningful lifeHow purpose connects to the Hungry HeartWhy lasting freedom is about becoming a mature man, not simply quitting pornographyThe goal isn't simply to find something impressive to do.It's to discover how God made you, what He has put on your heart, and how you can faithfully use what He's given you.Because when a man has something worth living for, reality becomes more compelling than escape. And that's a very different vision of porn recovery.Take the free Heart Hunger Clarity Quiz to begin discovering what your heart may actually be hungry for — including deeper needs around purpose, reassurance, connection, comfort, belonging, and more.

You've learned to listen to your feelings. You've started understanding the story beneath your thoughts. Now it's time to uncover the deeper issue both of them have been pointing toward all along: your Hungry Heart. Most Christian men think pornography is the problem. Others realize it's a symptom. But very few know what sits underneath that symptom. That's where your Hungry Heart comes in.Every heart longs for the things God created us to find in Him - love, comfort, purpose, strength, belonging, reassurance, peace, and so much more. Those longings aren't the problem. The problem is that we often try to satisfy them with things that can never truly feed us.In this episode, you'll learn why understanding your Hungry Heart is one of the biggest turning points in lasting recovery. When you recognize what your heart is actually longing for, you stop guessing, stop fighting symptoms, and begin building a recovery strategy that addresses the real issue. This is Part 3 of the Personal Recovery Plan series, where we're walking step by step through the same framework I use during my one-on-one coaching sessions to help men move from confusion to clarity, coping to regulation, fear to confidence, and sobriety to lasting freedom. In this episode you'll learn:Why every compulsive behavior points to a deeper hunger. How your feelings and thoughts reveal what your heart is actually longing for.Why pornography can never satisfy your deepest needs. How identifying your Hungry Heart creates clarity and direction for recovery. Why lasting freedom begins by feeding your heart what truly satisfies. If you're ready to stop guessing and uncover what's really driving your struggle, I'd love to help.

What do you do when you've been overlooked, sidelined, or forgotten — and the promise God gave you still hasn't shown up?David knew that feeling. Left in the field while his brothers stood before Samuel. Not even invited to the table. And yet — God looked past everything everyone else was measuring and saw straight to his heart. This week, Pastor Doug Bell takes us deep into the story of a shepherd boy who became a man after God's own heart — not because he lived a perfect life, but because of the direction he ran when he messed up. From the anointing to the cave, from his greatest failures to his deepest grief, David's life reveals a truth we all need to hear: your hunger for God doesn't disqualify you. It defines you.Because the gap between a promise and its fulfillment is never wasted time. That's where your character is formed.Key Scriptures: 1 Samuel 13:14 · 1 Samuel 16:7, 11 · 1 Samuel 30:6 · 2 Samuel 12:23 · 2 Samuel 18:33 · Psalm 42:1–2 · Psalm 51:10 · Psalm 63:1 · John 6:35

In our comfortable world, many believers find themselves drifting into spiritual lukewarmness despite witnessing God's powerful movement through healings, salvations, and miracles. Studies reveal that younger generations now attend church more frequently than older believers, raising the question of why passion for God often diminishes over time rather than grows stronger. The answer lies in what we sow into our lives—whether we feed our flesh or our spirit.Jesus warned the Laodicean church about the danger of being lukewarm, neither hot nor cold. Their problem wasn't being bad people, but rather their self-sufficient attitude of needing nothing while being spiritually wretched and poor. Several factors can block our spiritual hunger: physical comforts and rigid patterns that prevent availability for God's work, possessions that possess us rather than serve us, religious activity without genuine relationship, and worry-driven distractions that keep us busy instead of sitting at Jesus' feet.To cultivate spiritual hunger, we must choose the one thing needed—intimate time with Jesus—and be willing to taste and see that the Lord is good. This requires breaking comfortable patterns and stepping outside our comfort zones for spiritual growth. Rather than being merely a spark, we're called to be a burning blaze, especially as we witness young people coming to faith in large numbers. The goal isn't to pray for hardship but to cultivate hunger amid abundance, becoming passionate pursuers of God despite having comfort and plenty.

Daily Devotions From Greg Laurie
The Heart Is Deceitful | Jeremiah 17:9

Daily Devotions From Greg Laurie

“The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?” (Jeremiah 17:9 NLT)   Bruce Springsteen had a “Hungry Heart.” Billy Ray Cyrus had an “Achy Breaky Heart.” Toni Braxton sang “Un-Break My Heart,” and the Bee Gees sang “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,” which is a good question if you have an “achy breaky heart.” Of course, Celine Dion reminds us that the heart will go on, even if it's hungry, achy breaky, or broken.   You can probably think of dozens of other songs that have the word heart in their titles. The heart holds a special place in our culture—especially pop culture—because it represents our deepest emotions. Romantics believe that our emotions are the purest essence of who we are. Your body can be tempted. Your mind can be deceived. But your heart will never lead you astray. Or so says the plot of every romantic comedy to come out of Hollywood. So the only way to find true happiness and ultimate fulfillment in life is to (say it with me) follow your heart.   But in Jeremiah 17:9, God says, “Not so fast.” There's nothing particularly noble or pure about the human heart. In fact, you'd have a hard time finding anything more deceitful or wicked. The heart is selfish. It wants what it wants, regardless of the consequences or the pain it causes others.   It doesn't have to be that way. In Ezekiel 36:26, God tells the people of Israel, “I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart” (NLT). This spiritual heart transplant changes everything. You develop a tender, responsive heart by filling your mind with God's Word, meditating on it, obeying it, and letting it change you from the inside. When your heart becomes a conduit for God's wisdom and love, it can be trusted. And it can be useful.   David wrote, “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart's desires” (Psalm 37:4 NLT). Taking delight in the Lord means recognizing that His ways are best. The result is a desire to make sure His will is done. When you align your life with God's will, your heart changes. It becomes more like God's. And when your prayers sync with what God wants for you, God gives you the desires of your heart.   Until God changes your heart, it will lead you astray if you try to follow it. It will deceive you into believing that it can guide you to genuine happiness and fulfillment. In reality, only God can deliver those things. — Listen to the Greg Laurie Podcast Become a Harvest PartnerSupport the show: https://harvest.org/supportSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I think I'm still looking for mine, and perhaps you are, too. What often happens is there's an initial rough sort where you get thrown in with others who have similar labels - but that's just the start of it. It's up to you to find your people amongst everyone. I realized that I keep looking for people who make me both think and laugh, meaning I need to seek them out to give them the opportunity to do so. Of course, sometimes your people don't actually need to be found, they need to be rediscovered; they're already there, waiting for you to reach out to them and say hello.  Today's guest is a law professor with articles published in the Columbia Law Review, Yale Law & Policy Review, the American Journal of Criminal Law, and many more. His full name is W. David Ball, but I know him as my friend Dave, someone I met when we were newly minted Rhodes scholars at Oxford in the early 1990s. [24:20] | Sitting with ambition (as a Rhodes scholar). [28:13] | Work in the criminal legal system: “I have calluses - not in the sense where I don't feel, but where my skin isn't being burnt off.” [33:01]

Bishop Robert Barron’s Sermons - Catholic Preaching and Homilies

Friends, we come now to the marvelous Feast of Corpus Christi, of the Body and Blood of Christ. What has been on my mind a lot recently is the famous story of the feeding of the five thousand—the only miracle, with the exception of the Resurrection, recounted in all four Gospels. Jesus multiplying the loaves and fishes to the feeding of this great crowd must have made a massive impression on the first Christians. With this feast in mind, let's look at the earliest version of this story in the Gospel of Mark, because every part of it is worthy of meditation.
