In Episode Twelve of Season Three we are joined by Todd Kamensek from the Neuroscience of Vision and Action Laboratory at the University of British Columbia to chat about how social motivation influences facial perception abilities in adults with autism. Todd shares with us how repeated exposure to social stimuli increases our expertise at being able to identify social cues, and how differences in social motivation for individuals with autism might be diminishing the amount of experience they are getting and therefore the expertise gained. We learn how, for neurotypical adults, there is no relationship between an individual’s ability to identify faces or facial expressions but, in those with autism, these processes are related. How does experience alter perception? What is prosopagnosia and what does it tell us about how the brain processes faces? What is a face diet? All this and much more in Facial Perception in Adults with Autism with Todd Kamensek!

In Episode Twelve we discuss Clare Wright's award-winning book, The Forgotten Rebels of Eureka. A well-worn foundation story of modern Australia and the so-called ‘birthplace of Australian democracy’, the stories of the Eureka Stockade and the goldminers who rose up against an oppressive government linger in our national story. And yet, for too long those stories were missing half their characters. Where were, where are the stories of the women of Eureka?Published in 2014, Clare Wright’s award winning book, The Forgotten Rebels of Eureka writes those forgotten women back into the story. Ten years of research and writing created a bold and entertaining book that pays tribute to the women of Ballarat and their place in the story of Eureka. In Episode Twelve of the Close Knit Podcast, I chat to Nadine Hulme of Adagio Mills If you follow me on instagram, you might remember my visit to an alpaca farm earlier this year, and that was Nadine and her husband andrew’s business, adagio mills. Nadine tells us about their journey with alpacas- how they got their own as pets, then tried to get their fibre processed locally and all the challenges they faced with that. She shares with us her experience setting up a mill, running a kickstarter to fund the scouring component and some of their plans for the future. I’m a huge fan of local, small production, and it was so thrilling to see it happening here in Australia. Keep an ear out for Adagio as they grow - they’re onto something pretty great, I think. “Erbstein’s was an extraordinary life that was characterised by courage and resourcefulness in the face of adversity. That he and his family survived the holocaust was a matter of astonishing good fortune, but just four years after the end of the war, Erbstein was killed with his team, Il Grande Torino, in the Superga air crash.” In Episode Twelve of the Blizzard Podcast we bring you an extract from Chapters 10 and 11 of ‘Erbstein: The triumph and tragedy of football’s forgotten pioneer’ by Dominic Bliss, published by Blizzard Books in 2014. The book is the result of years of painstaking research into one of football’s forgotten greats. Erbstein was part of the great Jewish coaching tradition developed in the coffee houses of Budapest, and after a playing career that included stints in Hungary, Italy and the USA, he moved to Bari to embark on a coaching career that soon became noted for its innovativeness. He would go on to coach the great Torino side of the 1940s who dominated Italian football, until the tragic accident that claimed the lives of the squad, and their manager, at Superga in 1949. The extract in this episode details his family's experiences during the Hungarian holocaust, and how his quick wits and contacts helped spare the lives of his wife and daughters from a fascist death-march in 1944. If you have any feedback, comments or suggestions email podcast@theblizzard.co.uk, or find us on Twitter @blzzrd. The book is available from www.theblizzard.co.uk. Digital downloads cost £3, while print versions are available from £10 + postage. You can also find it on the Kindle and Google Play stores.
