This week on the Way of Champions Podcast we are sharing a replay of EPL and US National Team Player Jay DeMerit. Jay has one of the most unique stories to success the sport of soccer has ever seen. An MLS reject that backpacked to Europe and climbed the English soccer pyramid from the 12th tier to become the captain of Watford FC in the English Premier League. He also represented the US Mens National Team for five years, playing every minute of his teams games in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. In 2011 he became the first ever signing & captain for the Vancouver Whitecaps in MLS. He finished his career in 2014, after captaining the Vancouver Whitecaps for four seasons. Visit his website at https://jaydemeritstory.com/. Using his vast experience in professional soccer, Jay will share the highs and the lows he’s endured along his journey through his 10-year professional career. Highlights are the season of 2006-07, where Jay and his underdog Watford FC team were promoted to the English Premier League, the biggest soccer league in the world, as well as his experiences in playing a major role in the World Cup in 2010. Defining leadership traits, dealing with adversities, identifying commonality between diverse personalities, creating culture, and role management are just a few things Jay will touch on, as well as how he learned to lead from others through mentorship, and then grow into captain himself. Jay has taken the stage at Tedx Vancouver (https://youtu.be/zKwZutf5GGU), spoken at a wide variety of national conferences, and has even been the keynote speaker on “Grit” at the US Soccer Federation’s annual symposium. His story was the subject of “Rise & Shine: The Jay DeMerit Story” a documentary released in 2011 after a successful kickstarter campaign, where the passionate soccer community raised $223,000 to turn this important story into a feature film. Highlights from the Podcast: When Jay became a soccer player On Learning to adapt to the opportunities Why choosing life experiences made the difference On being a pub league sub Be ready when the big break knocks on the door What it means to be a team player The world’s most expensive game Coming home was the toughest thing One of Jay’s greatest accomplishments Jay’s advice to young players The Way of Champions Podcast is brought to you by Sports Refund. When kids sign up to play youth sports there are always fees involved. And parents pay those fees so their child can be on the team, not the injury report. That’s why I love Sports Refund, and parents will too. Sports Refund is low-cost sports fee insurance – NOT health insurance, sports fee insurance. So if your child becomes injured or sick and can’t play, you get your fees reimbursed for that lost time, from one game to an entire season. It’s that simple. This product not only saves families wasted fees, it saves injured athletes the stress of feeling like they’re wasting their parents’ money. The fees come back until the player comes back. So they can focus on fully recovering and making a healthy return to the game. Sports Refund has options for individuals and organizations. Ask your club if they offer it, or visit SportsRefund.com/Game to learn more and sign up today. That’s SportsRefund.com/Game. Can’t Play? Don’t Pay. With Sports Refund. Help Support the Podcast! Now, let's talk some football. In Part 1, Bob Bradley and Jesse Marsch talked about building a team, ideas, and some of the intangibles. Part 2 is all about the football on the pitch. Bob and Jesse delve into the finer details of LAFC and Red Bull Salzburg's approach to pressing and counterpressing. How do teams work against the ball to create opportunities in the attack? What are some of the concepts and language the two coaches use with their players when trying to express their philosophy? How can a team balance being dynamic and quick with being disciplined positionally? Both coaches go into their thinking on the topics and how they've evolved over time from experiences they shared at the Chicago Fire, the US Men's National Team, and all the way back to Princeton University.
Chicago Fire forward - CJ Sapong - tells us he welcomes the US Soccer Federation's decision to repeal it's policy requiring national team players to stand during the national anthem. Sapong - who has played for the US Men's National Team - believes a situation has been created around the national anthem, which equates to: "if you're not loyal to this flag...you deserve to die". He also recalls an incident where his family were confronted at a high school soccer game because someone in the crowd felt he had disrespected the national anthem. "My heart was broken. I'd given up." - Former AFL Star Adam Goodes describes the toll racist abuse took on him and how being abused by a teenage girl during a game set in motion a chain of events that saw him walk away from the sport in 2015. He also speaks about the importance of athletes using their platforms following George Floyd's death. Nessun Dorma and Italia 90 - Thirty years on from the 1990 World Cup, the BBC's Head of TV Sport - Philip Bernie - tells us how and why the song was chosen as the soundtrack to the corporation's coverage. "I was really shocked" - the fourteen year old snooker player given a tour card for the next two seasons by the World Snooker Tour. Ukraine's Lulian Boiko tells us how he got into the sport, what it was like meeting his hero Mark Selby and his hopes for life on the circuit. He was rewarded with a tour card after producing exceptional performances at leading international amateur tournaments over the last year. Powering the NHS - Sam Cox tells us how he's delivered over fifteen thousand meals to NHS hospitals across London during the covid-19 pandemic. The professional boxer says it's his way of giving back after he lost his mother to cancer last year and for the way the National Health Service helped him when he was younger. Due to a growth hormone deficiency Cox was still the size of a six year old boy at the age of fifteen. Super Rugby - The competition returned in New Zealand this week and crowds were able to attend. New Zealand's first female rugby commentator - Rikki Swannell - joins us to discuss how it went. And in Sporting Witness - we tell the story of arguably the greatest upset in the history of the ancient Olympic sport of Greco-Roman wrestling. American Rulon Gardner discusses how he defeated a previously unbeaten Russian champion. It was a David-and-Goliath-style battle that made headlines around the world.
Tim and Brodee check in with Memphis 901 FC Head Coach Tim Mulqueen. Last week the USL Championship announced a return to play on or around July 11th. Other details of the restart are to be determined, so the guys talked to "Mulch" about everything to this point. Mulqueen discussed the challenges of training when they cannot be together even for individual workouts. As restrictions have lifted, a new challenge awaited Mulqueen: practice while observing social distancing. Coach explains how Assistant Coach Ben Pirmann and he made it work from past experiences. He also proudly talks about how the team's veteran leaders have assisted in maintaining player morale on and off the pitch. The announcement of the return of soccer, combined with progression to small group training, has Tim Mulqueen more excited than ever. Coach tells Tim and Brodee about the drills designed specifically to adhere to local health guidelines. It's uncharted territory for nearly every coach, but Mulqueen says the players are responding well to training. While Mulqueen speaks proudly of the skill of his club, he is especially proud of the team's genuine respect and empathy for others. He chalks it up to the character of the players and the off-pitch leadership of Tim Howard. Huge thanks to Memphis 901 FC Head Coach Tim Mulqueen for joining us. Manchester United are banking on youth to shore up their defense. An update in the transfer window. In the 2nd half...
