Nothing like a mid-season script hackjob to bring your hosts down as we review the difficult "Melora". A deeply irritating woman comes to DS9, Julian is attracted to her for no particular reason, we get clumsy disability allegory, but at least Odo gets to watch Quark suffer!

Women at Warp: A Roddenberry Star Trek Podcast

Aliza and Sue welcome Heather Rae Barker for a deep dive into how chronic pain shows up in Star Trek. Frequent pain-related questions like "Do the Borg feel pain?" and "Why does Geordi refuse pain relief for his visor?" are explored, before revisiting the DS9 episode "Melora" and finding modern day parallels to accessibility and the burdens of adaptability. Bad sessions. We've all dealt with them and we'll continue to have them periodically. It's all part of running TTRPGs. But how to you deal with them when they happen? What do you do to salvage the game at the next session? DM Dave offers a question to his fellow Wise DMs regarding a recent session that he felt he could have run better, smoother, better improv. But he got stuck. Hey, it happens. In this episode, Tony and Chris help Dave talk it out and, in the process, reveal what we all deal with… sometimes, everything just goes south in the game and it isn't fun. Pirates. It doesn't take long for a D&D group to want to play as pirates, swashbucklers, privateers, and sailors. In our modern day, we can blame Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean. But how do you approach running a seafaring adventure? Is it just a fancy travel mechanic? Is it just a vehicle to get from town to town? Or is it the basis of the whole campaign? In this episode, Tony, Chris, and Dave sit down to answer a question from a longtime friend of the show, Dr. DM himself, Jason, on how to run a great, epic, and memorable ocean-themed campaign outside of just being evil pirates who rob everything.4:00 How is this different from every other setting? I sat down with Melora Zaner, the Chief Design Officer at TIAA, to discuss the often-overlooked value of incremental innovation and the transformative power of design in addressing pressing societal challenges like retirement.  Our conversation starts with an urgent issue that many are facing—the retirement crisis in America. We discuss the alarming statistics indicating that 40% of Americans are on track to run out of money in their retirement years. Melora offers an intriguing alternative by asking, "What if we shift our thinking from 'retirement planning' to 'longevity planning'?" This approach puts the focus on sustained income, healthcare provisions, and overall quality of life, rather than just a lump sum that may or may not last a lifetime. Innovation doesn't have to be grandiose to be impactful, as Melora eloquently points out. The episode delves into the concept of 'breadcrumbing,' a term Melora uses to describe the art of celebrating small, incremental changes that lead toward a significant shift. These small steps, often overlooked in the constant quest for disruptive change, can offer customers stepping stones, helping them see a future where their needs and concerns are addressed. We also discuss the importance of storytelling in the journey of innovation. How do you narrate a story that balances the celebration of small victories with the drive toward grand visions? The idea is to offer manageable steps, or breadcrumbs, to make the journey less daunting and more rewarding for both customers and organizations. These incremental changes shouldn't be underestimated; they often result in exponential gains over time, especially when they address specific customer pain points. Finally, Melora shares insights into getting internal stakeholders on board with innovation. She emphasizes that incremental wins can build confidence internally and set the stage for bigger, more disruptive changes in the long run. Tune into this episode of Innovation Storytellers Show to explore the power of incremental innovation and design-led thinking in transforming how we approach complex challenges, from the retirement crisis to customer engagement and internal alignment. Because sometimes, the biggest changes start with the smallest steps. The last time we were with the party we found them making final preparations to embark on their quest from Amina. They are to go to Invenas to put a stop to the cult that is there and retrieve the Stone of Revival. In doing this, Galahad will receive his piece of the root of the Heartwood to enchant his armor further. They are joined by Quon a Grippli Druid who offers their help to the group in exchange for help with restoring their homeland in the Glasmeada Isles. From what they gather, the situation is very similar to the machines that the Constable has been placing. The group arrives just outside of Invenas and is not met with a warm welcome. They're met with arrows fired at them and are promptly arrested. Their crime? Espionage. While in prison they meet Arbane who after some exchange is already hated by all, but most by Zechs. Eventually, plans are made, prayers are had, and various levels of comfort and discomfort move through the party. Through a shared vision, Zechs and Galahad see an image of Melora, and eventually through Glad the group meets The Protector. They are told to wait and be patient, the time will come for their escape. Quon, using wild shape helps locate the party's items and they begin to plan their escape. They also meet Colel and some other members of Invenas' resistance. After a very elaborate escape, they find themselves underground with the leader of the resistance, Finnea. Finnea also comes with the real Salix in tow. Finnea has crucial information for the party which is great considering not too long after they are met by some leaders of this cult, The Web Of Fate. Some of their variants and The Constable's lieutenants have joined them to make things even more dire. The party manages to get a party vs. party battle going, which looks like it will be going in their favor until the tides change. They are forced to make a retreat and recover from this fight. Licking wounds, physically, mentally, and emotionally. The party decides that the best strategy is to systematically take them out individually. As this season focuses on Graft Versus Host Disease (GVHD), we thought we would start with the basics.  Today we welcome Melora Rennie, OTR/L, CLT-LANA, an Occupational Therapist from the blood and marrow transplant unit at Northside Hospital in Atlanta.  She helps patients who are battling various blood and marrow cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, aplastic anemia, multiple myeloma and even sickle cell disease.Melora explains the reasons for and different types of bone marrow transplants, from autologous to allogeneic.  In an allogeneic transplant, when you receive donor cells from someone else, you could face Graft Versus Host Disease.  Acute GVHD occurs in the first 100 days after transplant. Chronic GVHD relates to problems seen thereafter.Chronic GVHD can attack many different systems in the body - from integumentary (skin), to respiratory, musculoskeletal, genital/urinary, neurological, ocular (eyes), reproductive, and vascular/lymphatic. Melora walks through the different presentations.  Additionally, transplant patients may also deal with cancer related fatigue and social isolation, which are both important to acknowledge. Melora will also address medication and side effects, including the impact of steroids. In her role as an Occupational Therapist (OT), Melora is a key part of the rehabilitation team.  She and her colleagues help individuals develop, regain, or maintain skills necessary for engagement in daily living and meaningful activities - everything from waking up in the morning to falling asleep at night.   OTs can work in acute care, post-acute rehab, outpatient, in-home, or other settings.Occupational Therapists address functional limitations, related to an individual's cognition, activity tolerance, balance, strength, range of motion, and motor skills. They utilize a variety of therapeutic interventions in order to restore and maintain participation in the activities of daily life.  When working specifically with oncology patients, Occupational Therapists want to ward off any functional decline that may be associated with cancer treatment.  Related to fatigue, they assist patients with pacing and energy conservation techniques. OTs also work with cognition, pain management, and mental/emotional well being.  These are vital components of patient care that cannot be overlooked.  This can even include modifying a patient's favorite activity so they can continue to engage in it.  Melora and her team also provide training, education and support for caregivers, a crucial part of any patient's health care team.We close this episode with the inspiring story of one of Melora's patients, as well as her advice to you and your loved ones, as you work through your transplant journey. There is hope and Melora will offer plenty of it. Links:Northside Hospital: Blood and Marrow Transplant Group: https://www.northside.com/locations/blood-marrow-transplant-group-of-georgiaNorthside Hospital's Rehabilitation Services: https://www.northside.com/services/rehabilitation-servicesOther ResourcesNational Bone Marrow Transplant Link - (800) LINK-BMT, or (800) 546-5268.nbmtLINK Website: https://www.nbmtlink.org/nbmtLINK Facebook Page:  https://www.facebook.com/nbmtLINKnbmtLINK YouTube Page can be found by clicking here.Thank you to this season's sponsors:Supported by Pharmacyclics, an AbbVie Company (https://www.pharmacyclics.com/) and Janssen Biotech, Inc. Melora, better known as Lore, is that last of the Perseides, an ancient family descended from the great Greek hero Perseus, known for beheading Medusa. She was raised in a culture that participates in the Agon, a god hunt that occurs for seven days every seven years. Back in the day, our boy Zeus banished nine of the gods for crimes against humanity, punishing them by making them mortal during the Agon. Anyone who kills a god, inherits their power and becomes a new god, though there are rules and limitations. At the beginning of the Agon that is this book, the only old gods left are Athena, Artemis, and Hermes. A lot happens in this book, so it's really difficult to summarize in a concise way. Basically, Wrath, the new Ares, is the bad guy and he is searching for Lore for some unknown reason. He's just killing everyone and doesn't care about it. Athena wants to kill all the new gods and teams up with Lore to kill Wrath because Lore thinks Wrath is responsible for her family's death, so she has a motive. It's a quid pro quo… Lore gets her revenge; Athena gets to kill the imposter new gods. How did we feel about the portrayals of the gods that we encountered in this book? How did we feel about the two major twists in the story? How did we feel about the conclusion of the main conflict. Join us as we discuss these questions and more in episode 7 of our spoiler-filled podcast.Questions: Karey came up with these questions.Great music huh?!
