Professor Clare Wright is the author of five works of history, including the best-selling The Forgotten Rebels of Eureka and You Daughters of Freedom, which comprise the first two instalments of her Democracy trilogy. On this episode of Read This, Clare sits down with Michael Williams to discuss the final instalment of the trilogy, Näku Dhäruk: The Bark Petitions, which was released in October.
Historian and author Professor Clare Wright's award-winning work is about righting the wrongs of Australian history. Across three books she takes a historical artefact and uses it to understand the voices that are too often missing from the historical record: the Eureka flag, the suffragette banner, and now the Bark Petitions. This week, Michael sits down with Clare for a conversation about her new book Naku Dharuk The Bark Petitions.Reading list:The Forgotten Rebels of Eureka, Clare Wright, 2014You Daughters of Freedom, Clare Wright, 2018Naku Dharuk The Bark Petitions, Clare Wright, 2024The Season, Helen Garner, 2024You can find these books and all the others we mentioned at your favourite independent book store. On the live front, the front person has arguably the most important job. As the voice, they're basically running the show. Over the years, Metaldom has had so many awesome performers filling that position. And we all have our faves. Then week we gave ourselves the Herculean task of whittling down our choices to a mere ten. What are some of your faves? In our "News, Views and Tunes", we talk "Ghostbusters Night" at the ballpark and exactly how many instruments that Aaron can play. Musically, we crank some new and used from Autopsy, D.R.I., Master, Macabre, Forgotten Rebels, Devil Lee Roy and the immortal Quorthon. Horns Up!

Hi everyone! On this week's TALK MUSIC podcast, I'm thrilled to interview Derbyshire, UK native and guitar ace, the legend CHRIS SPEDDING Having recently seen him play live with ANTON FIG on drums and KEITH LENTON on bass, I can vouch that, at 79 years young, Chris still has it! His illustrious career includes session work with Cream bass player Jack Bruce, Harry Nilsson, Elton John, Brian Eno, Tom Waits, Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry, Joan Armatrading, John Cale, Roger Daltrey and Paul McCartney (“Give My Regards to Broad Street”), to name a few. Spedding has also worked as a producer, mixer and musician on a number of projects by Toronto-area punk rock acts: Teenage Head, Forgotten Rebels, Viletones, the Curse, the Ugly, the Demics, the ‘B' Girls, the Mods, the Sinisters, Toby Swann, Johnnie Lovesin and Art Bergmann. Our chat also includes his time spent touring and recording with ROBERT GORDON, his involvement in how he ended up producing the first demos for the SEX PISTOLS, and how ‘MOTORBIKIN” became a top 20 hit in the UK. I also had the pleasure of working with Chris many years ago when I produced a version of the track “New York City” by the Demics that ended up on his solo album CAFE DAYS which I released on my Hypnotic label. Enjoy!
You can literally count on one hand the years the mighty Slayer have been disbanded. Now an impending reunion for multiple festival dates have been announced. Needless to say, this has Metaldom all a buzz. And of course once the announcement was made, the interwebs was flooded with misinformation causing confusion. So this week we pick our way through the mirth. Is this too soon to be an official reunion? Is is something you'd pay big bucks to see in '24? And Horns to Mrs. Arraya for being so entertaining through all this. In our "News, Views and Tunes", we discuss pro wrassler Sting's last match. Musically, we crank some new and used from Midnight, D.R.I., Minor Threat, Bitch, Forgotten Rebels, Sentry, Vexange and we introduce Moncton's Omnivide in our "Indie Spitlight". Horns Up!!

Vida Goldstein was the first woman to campaign for elected office for a national parliament in the English speaking world. It was the election of 1903, Ms Goldstein ran for the Senate in the Australian parliament, and she lost! Her launch speech was at Portland in Victoria and podcast guest Prof Clare Wright read it aloud for the Sydney Writers Festival's 'Friends, Romans, Countrymen' event in 2022. In this episode, Clare talks about Vida Goldstein's speech, but also her place in the women's suffrage struggle of the 1880s and 90s. She explains quite brilliantly how that period of women's history unfolded, and how Australian women became leaders on the world stage helping other white women win their struggles in the UK and the USA. Vida was an invitee to the Roosevelt White House, and helped and inspired Emmeline Pankhurst. Clare also explains that the early suffragists did not help indigenous women win or in the case of South Australia, retain the vote. They were products of the White Australia' era they inhabited. The audio of the speech as read by Clare Wright is courtesy of the Sydney Writers Festival. You can purchase tickets to the 2023 festival here. Clare's books include the Stella Award winning The Forgotten Rebels of Eureka and You Daughters of Freedom. Join Speakola newsletter here. As we pressed "record" on this episode, it was July 1st. Or Canada Day. Unfortunately, with the events of this year we haven't been feeling very patriotic. But all the awesome music produced in the Great White North is always reason to celebrate. So we decided to grab a stack of Canuck wax, pour a couple drinks and shoot the shit. In other words, celebrate RAM-style. We discussed a Sacrifice/Slaughter FB battle thread we created, a Vancouver radio station playing RATM on loop, Vince Neil's goofy "satanic" quote and we test each other's Metal. Musically, we crank some new and used from the aforementioned Sacrifice and Slaughter, Blasphemy, Get The Shot, Forgotten Rebels, Death Sentence, DBC, Soothsayer, Electro Quarterstaff, CiDB, and Primordial Serpent! This week Tom briefly revisits his theme of local high school dances of yesteryear that featured live bands, give you a preview of some very worldly artists in the lineup for Summerfolk this year and play some tracks to convince you to come out to Electric Eclectics' event at Black Bellows on June 18. In the first camp, tracks from Perth County Conspiracy, Liverpool, Peter Schilling (a German star who scored a hit with english lyrics by Wiarton's David Lodge) and the Forgotten Rebels. To bridge the themes, a 2004 track by Beverley Glenn Copeland, who played OSCVI and the first two Summerfolks. Coming to Summerfolk this year: Cuban powerhouse Okan with a track featuring Rauzzy Ferrer, the world fusion of Moskitto Bar, Anishnabek artist Aysanabee and the amazing Estonian duo Puuluup. Hear a real stunner from South Africa's Abdullah Ibrahim aka Dollar Brand in honour of the Durham Sauntering Band's performance of the track in Owen Sound's Earth Day Parade. Finally, we wrap up with tracks from Debby Friday, Zones and Lee Paradise, who will be on the bill (with a few others) for Electric Eclectic's June 18 shindig.

Michael is joined by Professor Clare Wright OAM, award-winning historian, broadcaster, Professor of History at La Trobe University & author of ‘The Forgotten Rebels of Eureka', for her Re: The Eureka Stockade The Eureka Rebellion occurred in 1854, instigated by gold miners in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, who revolted against the colonial authority of the United Kingdom. It culminated in the Battle of the Eureka Stockade, which was fought between rebels and the colonial forces of Australia on 3 December 1854 at Eureka Lead and named after a stockade structure built by miners in the lead-up to the conflict. The rebellion resulted in at least 27 deaths and many injuries, the majority of casualties being rebels. The rebellion was the culmination of a period of civil disobedience during the Victorian gold rush with miners objecting to the expense of a miner's licence, taxation via the licence without representation, and the actions of the government, the police and military. Happy Valentine's Day, you beautiful MFers! Feb. 14th is that special day where love is in the air and...blah, blah, blah! Actually, we here at Radioactive Metal aren't that cynical but we do have our own twisted spin on this day. Our annual "Valentine's Day Massacre" episode is a bit anti-VDay with sort of a "She broke my heart, so I ripped her's out" type vibe. This episode we share the goings on at the "Black And Blue" fetish ball (!) that Sky put on. We rip a page from Revolver magazine and list our own "Hottest Chicks In Metal". And we play an (a)rousing game of Strip Trivia(!!). And of course all the inappropriately appropriate music to share with that special someone including Deceased, Huntress, Cauldron Burial, The Donnas, Forgotten Rebels, Aphrodite, Torsofuck, Dick Vomit, Shitfucker and Death Sentence!! For this Fifth Estate discussion, we're joined by two prominent historians for a conversation about their careers, and how they have each navigated the changing tropes and traditions of Australian history writing. What role do contemporary historians play in shaping the way all Australians remember – and reckon with – the past? From left to right: Sally Warhaft, Clare Wright and Geoffrey Blainey Geoffrey Blainey is the author of more than 40 books, including The Rush That Never Ended, The Story of Australia's People, and, perhaps most famously, The Tyranny of Distance, which has been in print since 1966. Clare Wright is an eminent academic and broadcaster and the Stella Prize-winning author of The Forgotten Rebels of Eureka and You Daughters of Freedom. Both writers have brought their research to large and enthralled readerships. How does writing about the past shape the possibilities of the future? Blainey and Wright join Sally Warhaft to discuss their approaches to writing Australian history: warts, beauty spots and blind spots.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
“this is the great moment, the thing that women all over the world are united in, was this fight for the vote... because with the vote they’ll be able to change all these other things. Without the vote they are powerless.” – Clare Wright As the first country to secure women the right to vote and stand for parliament, Australia led the way on one of the greatest moral issue of the early 20th Century. Yet this aspect of our history has largely been forgotten. Clare Wright, award-winning historian, writer and public commentator, has made a career of shining light onto these forgotten aspects of Australian history. With You Daughters of Freedom she continues this work, bringing to life the women’s suffrage movement in Australia. Late last year we had the privilege of hosting her at Bargoonga Nganjin, North Fitzroy Library, where she discussed the book with Natasha Cica, director of Kapacity.org. This is an edited recording, with audience questions revoiced by Yarra Libraries in some sections for clarity. Natasha Cica is the director of Kapacity.org, former CEO of Heide Museum of Modern Art and founding director of the Ingliss Clarke Centre. Clare Wright is an award-winning historian, writer and public commentator who has worked in politics, academia and the media. Her bestselling Beyond the Ladies Lounge: Australia’s Female Publicans, was published in 2003 and was followed in 2013 with The Forgotten Rebels of Eureka. Based on a decade of archival research into women’s roles in the Eureka stockage, it won the Stella prize in 2014, and was adapted into the successful young adult titles We Are the Rebels. You Daughters of Freedom is the second title in her Democracy series.
Welcome to La Trobe University’s Clever Conversations. This episode explores what it takes to make a book-to-screen adaptation with Clare Wright, who is a La Trobe Associate Professor in History and Anne Kenney, the award-winning Hollywood writer, and executive producer and scriptwriter for popular TV series, Outlander. Speaking together at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Clare and Anne discuss the book that has connected their worlds – The Forgotten Rebels of Eureka. Written by Clare, the Stella Prize-winning story uncovers the previously untold and little-acknowledged role of bold women adventurers who lived and worked in the Australian goldfields during the 1850s, and their roles in the Eureka Stockade. The discussion is facilitated by Danielle Binks, who is a writer, reviewer, youth literature advocate and literary agent.
In this episode of General Admission, we're exploring the punk roots of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada - covering such groups as Simply Saucer, Teenage Head, Forgotten Rebels and Problem Children.
In Episode Twelve we discuss Clare Wright's award-winning book, The Forgotten Rebels of Eureka. A well-worn foundation story of modern Australia and the so-called ‘birthplace of Australian democracy’, the stories of the Eureka Stockade and the goldminers who rose up against an oppressive government linger in our national story. And yet, for too long those stories were missing half their characters. Where were, where are the stories of the women of Eureka?Published in 2014, Clare Wright’s award winning book, The Forgotten Rebels of Eureka writes those forgotten women back into the story. Ten years of research and writing created a bold and entertaining book that pays tribute to the women of Ballarat and their place in the story of Eureka.
