Published in Amazing Stories Magazine in the 1940s with the help of editor Robert Palmer the Shaver Mystery took the world by storm and laid the foundation for UFOlogy and conspiracy culture that endures today. In the first half of the show we discuss Richard Shaver's theophany of the lusty swamp witch, Nydia and how he came to know firsthand the denizens of the underworld. We also take a look at the ancient space language, a galactic commons of sorts that Shaver introduced to us and begin exploring the colorful details as they are described in his first published story “I Remember Lemuria.” In the extended episode we go further down the Shaver Rabbit Hole (that sounds pornographic somehow) and get into the vast menagerie of human alien animal hybrids that our ancient alien overlords created in their laboratories and populate the many worlds in space. Gunnison-Crested Butte Tourism Association Executive Director John Norton grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, where he played the "typical" ball sports like football.  At Dartmouth College, he met his future wife, an accomplished and avid skier, so he knew he better learn how if he wanted to stick with her.  Today, it's one of his favorite things to do, but he's also a jack-of-all-trades, enjoying kayaking, fishing, mountain biking and everything else we enjoy in Crested Butte. After college, John began climbing the corporate ladder in the marketing department at Proctor and Gamble.  He may have stayed on that track if an old college friend hadn't offered him a job at Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR), in the marketing department there.  The early 90's were an exciting time at CBMR, with new lifts like the North Face and High lift, plus innovative efforts to attract new business, like guaranteeing airline seats and "free ski".  Later, John spent roughly ten years at the Aspen Skiing Company before being called back to Crested Butte and helping secure the sale of CBMR from the Nortons and Calloways to the Muellers (Triple Peaks).   After the Mueller sale, John eventually became the executive director at the local tourism association (TA).  The TA has since grown to encompass local entrepreneurial efforts as well.  In this episode, we talk about all of this and more, so enjoy this one- Crested Butte Real Estate Minute: Like many other places, Crested Butte and Gunnison are experiencing closures due to the Corona virus.  Please consider supporting local businesses by purchasing gift certificates, or donating to local charities.  Not sure where to donate?  Contact me here. Mike Norton, President, Norton Outdoor AdvertisingTips on running a family-owned out of home companyI would say don't get too top heavy with family members in the business.  Everyone in the business needs to have a defined role matching their talents and they need to be accountable.  Especially in a small company like ours there's no room to hire somebody simply because their name happens to be Norton…Family members need to hold themselves to a higher standard than non-family employees.  Secondly, you have to mentally compartmentalize business and family.  It's really easy and tempting to talk about business nonstop 24/7 but it's good to have a little separation and a little space. On growing up in an out of home business versus working for another company. I don't think there's a right or wrong answer…I think both ways can and do work.  In my particular instance with the exception of a short stint as a pizza delivery guy I came up in the business from the ground up, sweeping the shop floor when I was 14 or 15 and then cutting weeds with a machete the next 7 summers.  So I came up in the business… High efficiency LED lights. We have over the past several years changed out our lights to much more efficient lighting systems and it has taken our bills for electricity for our displays…down drastically.  If you haven't done so already I would certainly look into that. Solar I looked at solar ten years ago…The technology wasn't there, especially for the Midwest…My sense is that in this portion of the country with the amount of space that I would have on an individual billboard we might not be there yet but it is something that I want to look toward as an energy source. On using Smartlink My uncle Dan handles all this.  I do believe we are using Smartlink…Things like Smartlink where you make sure that the lights go on and off at a certain point – every thing adds up to being more efficient as a company and saving money.
