Is NFT.com the Next Big Thing? A year ago you may have gotten away with laughing at NFTs as silly little profile pictures of cartoon apes and penguins. But if you are still laughing, it's probably because you are laughing all the way to the bank. NFTs are still in the early adopter phase, but some companies are pushing towards mainstream adoption by bringing practical services to the masses. In this episode of this special sponsored crypto spotlight episode, we introduce you to NFT.com. With this service, NFT owners and industry enthusiasts will be able to have their own NFT gallery via a personal profile, that is in itself an NFT. Sound interesting? We're fascinated by it, so much so that this is a dual release on both Bad Crypto AND The Nifty Show. Regardless of where you are listening, we welcome you to the future and ask if NFT.com is the next big thing on episode #604 of The Bad Crypto Podcast. How much is a really good replica of a Mona Lisa worth? It might only be worthy of wiping your rear with — which should come as no surprise to you. This is because she's a one-off work of art, or “non-fungible”. The digital realm has brought many great things with its advent, but until recently, freely replicating information made digital ownership very fungible. This has changed with the introduction of Web 3.0. We were joined by the Iranian artist, Nightwatcher, who recently shifted from being a regular real-world artist to an NFT artist. The NF part stands for non-fungible, and the T is for token. This means, his art is minted using certain technologies and made available for people to own the rights to. Control-C and Control-P his stuff if you like, he doesn't mind. You won't own it in the true sense. This gentleman joined us to chat about the changing world of art with respect to NFTs, but also shared with us his experience of the Iranian art scene. He explains these changes are affording Iranian artists—especially—with a new means to be able to avoid restrictions. During our discussion, we also touched upon how emerging technologies, seen with Web 3.0 for example, are changing people's association with the internet and each other. NFTs in 2021 has become what ICOs were in 2017: the biggest buzzword in the cryptocurrency and blockchain space. Even though NFTs as a concept is not something entirely new, it is only now that they have become more hyped. But what exactly are NFTs? Why are they gaining so much popularity today? Which industries stand to gain the most with the rise of these non-fungible tokens? How will this industry evolve? And most importantly, is this another bubble ready to burst? For this special episode, we invite Mia Deng, Partner at Dragonfly Capital and Co-founder of NFT marketplace TR-Lab, to dive deeper into the NFT space and also talk more about Dragonfly Capital's latest $225 million fund, primarily focused on DeFi and NFTs. This is our first episode where we deep dive into one serious topic, and what better choice than the NFTs that everyone is talking about! We briefly explain what NFTs are, and take case study to figure out what it is that people are buying. If you don't have any right on the digital art that the NFT represents, what on earth are you getting for your money? What are the implications for the notion of money? for the notion of things even? Is NFT really helpful for artists? How is it different from a certificate of authenticity? Would it still be useful in a utopian money-less society? Or is it just like bitcoin? And finally, does it create the new building blocks for a new ontological reality? All of this and more in this episode!
