Malaysia's Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim retabled Budget 2023 last Friday on the 24th of February, after the first tabling in October 2022 by the previous Ismail Sabri administration was thrown out, due to parliament being dissolved. With a new unity government at the helm, there are significant changes to what was initially tabled, with the newly consolidated Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change (NRECC) ministry receiving about RM6.53 billion in allocations, said to be an increase of 8.4 percent from last year. Is this a sign of the government's commitment to combat environmental issues and climate change in the country? We dissect Budget 2023 to discuss if conservation of the environment and inclusive and sustainable growth was prioritised, with Meenakshi Raman, the President of Sahabat Alam Malaysia.Brought to you by Mah Sing. Despite claiming to champion Malay-Muslim Unity and ostensibly being in the same government, Umno, Bersatu and PAS are constantly at odds with one another. The latest manifestation of this dysfunctional relationship is the war of words between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri and his predecessor, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin of Bersatu. What does all this finger-pointing signal about the timing of GE15? We speak to political analyst Dr. Azmi Hassan for insights.

Recently, while delivering her speech at a special UMNO briefing, Pengerang MP Azalina Othman said: "If the power to change the AG is in the hands of the prime minister, why didn't he (Ismail Sabri) change the AG when this is under his jurisdiction?” So, this begs the question – what is the role of the Attorney General (AG) and should they be political appointees? And what would a truly free and independent judiciary look like? Thomas Fann, chairperson of Bersih, helps us unpack discuss.

Langkah Sheraton came as a shock. Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir lost his majority when a small faction of Parti Keadilan Rakyat, led by Azmin Ali, defected from the party, teamed up with Bersatu (which was also part of the Pakatan Harapan coalition) and formed a new coalition with Barisan Nasional, PAS, GPS, etc to form a new government. Since then, there have been calls for an anti-hopping law – to put it simply, a law that would prevent frogs. Things gained momentum when Pakatan Harapan signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ismail Sabri-led government last September, in which one of the key terms was the tabling of an Anti-Hopping Law. But where are we at right now, when it comes to this law?Image credit: Shutterstock

This week marks 100 days since Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri became the ninth Prime Minister of Malaysia. He came into office at the height of the Covid-19 outbreak, with more than 20,000 cases of infection reported every day. Daily cases are now down to around 5000 and the political situation also seems less tense compared to Tan Sri Muhyiddin's term. What does this say about Ismail Sabri's leadership? We assess his achievements with political commentator Dr Hamidin Abd Hamid. Image credit: EPA-EFE

The initial indications aren't reassuring, especially as the Attorney-General has come out to say that a confidence vote is not necessary. What would be the potential implications for Ismail Sabri's government if they forego the vote? We discuss this with political analyst Dr. Azmi Hassan. Image credit: Adam Yusof / Shutterstock.com

The history repeated itself again when former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced his resignation on 16 August that led to a frenzy of competing for the numbers to appoint a new Prime Minister for Malaysia. Alas, after a long two weeks of political drama, we have come to an end after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Al-Mustafa Billah Shah of Pahang, consented the appointment of Bera MP, Ismail Sabri Yaakob as the ninth Malaysian Prime Minister. Ismail is also the third PM appointed since the last 14th General Election in 2018. In this episode, I will try to delve deeper into what are among the key things to watch when Ismail Sabri takes his oath of office on 21 August at the Istana Negara. I'm speaking to Raja Iskandar Fareez, communications director of Research For Social Advancement Berhad (REFSA). --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/norman-goh/message
Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has resigned as the Prime Minister of Malaysia. The question is, who will be the next to take office? Will some form of Perikatan Nasional remain intact, with Ismail Sabri as their candidate? Will KuLi be the candidate to bring UMNO and Pakatan Harapan to form a temporary alliance? Will Anwar finally become the Prime Minister after gunning for the seat for many years? Or will we have someone else entirely? James Chai, joins us to discuss. Image source: Muhyiddin Yassin Facebook
