She's a fractional Chief Growth Officer who helps small government contractors stop chasing every shiny opportunity and actually build a strategy. In this episode, Krystn and BJ get into the BD curse of always saying "maybe we can win this," why the first year of her own business was the easy one, where AI actually helps in marketing and where it falls flat, and the rule she made about saying yes to the scary stuff. Harry interviews canvassers on the ground in Makerfield. Promoted by Lotus Eater Media Limited, PO Box 4354, Swindon, SN3 9FX, on behalf of Restore Britain, Suite 4, Millennium House, Gapton Hall Road, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, NR31 0NL.
The skills that got you promoted may be the ones now working against you. If you were a great individual contributor, the game slowed down for you. You knew the systems, knew where the answers lived, knew how to score. Then you became a manager, and the game sped right back up. The rim moved. The court changed. And the instincts that made you dependable, the "I'll just do it myself" reflex, the urge to route around the difficult teammate, the pressure to have every answer, those instincts now create the very problems you're trying to fix. In this episode, James Rosseau Sr. unpacks the three shifts every new manager has to make to stop leading with old instinct and start leading with new awareness. You'll hear why your promotion was a reward for mastering a game you already understood, why leadership is not the next level of that game but a different game entirely, and why the new game is won through your people, not around them. James also shares the story of "Montel," a team member he almost wrote off at Card Services who became one of his strongest players the moment James stopped managing harder and started investing differently. By the end of this episode, you'll be able to spot exactly where you're leading from old habit and know what to do about it. Three weekly action steps included.
The communication habits that earned you a VP title can quietly stall your climb to the C-suite. In this episode, Sean Barnes breaks down five shifts that separate mid-level managers from top executives, drawing on a career that has spanned almost 50 acquisitions and two IPOs. He explains why executives lead with the answer and provide context second, why thinking out loud erodes confidence, and why taking a clear position matters more than playing it safe. He also makes the case that real leaders set the tone in the room instead of mirroring it, and shows how vocal range keeps people locked in. These are learnable skills, and stacking them is what gets people to pay attention, listen, and follow. Key Moments 00:00 - Why VP-level communication habits stall your shot at the C-suite 00:50 - Shift one, lead with the answer and provide context second 01:45 - What answer-first communication sounds like in practice 02:44 - Shift two, stop thinking out loud 03:39 - Pause, gather your thoughts, then deliver 04:37 - Shift three, take a position or become irrelevant 05:36 - You can be wrong and still be respected 06:32 - Shift four, set the tone instead of mirroring the room 08:19 - Stepping into a leadership vacuum 08:19 - Shift five, using vocal range to keep people locked in 10:16 - Recap of all five shifts 11:06 - The executive presentation and public speaking course Key Takeaways Executives lead with the answer and provide context second, because people decide in seconds whether you are worth listening to. Taking a clear position earns more respect than hedging, and you can be wrong and still be respected. Real leaders shape the energy in the room instead of matching it, especially in high pressure moments. Organizations are investing heavily in AI, technology, and strategy — yet many are overlooking the most powerful driver of performance: the people manager. More than 90% of HR leaders say managers are critical to business performance. Yet research from SHRM shows a persistent preparedness gap, particularly among first-time and frontline managers, many of whom report feeling under-equipped to lead effectively. At the intersection of performance and wellbeing sits the modern manager — asked to deliver results, support mental health, integrate AI, and retain talent, often without the systems or development to succeed. The result? Burnout at the managerial level, inconsistent employee experience, and weakened organizational resilience. But the same role that represents the greatest vulnerability inside an organization also represents its greatest leverage point. In this episode of Rebels with a Heart, Derek Lundsten sits down with Dr. Alex Alonso, Chief Knowledge Officer at SHRM, to explore: What the data tells us about the widening manager capability gap Why traditional leadership training isn't translating into daily effectiveness The measurable business impact of manager wellbeing and readiness How organizations can build real, measurable manager readiness In an AI-accelerated world, competitive advantage won't just come from better tools, it will come from leaders who can protect performance by protecting their people.

A children's book called "Are You With Me?" with a father in angel wings on the cover. Published one year after Eric Richins' death. Promoted on local television by the woman convicted of killing him.The prosecution called it deflection. And it was. But this episode argues it was something far more psychologically complex: Kouri Richins building the version of reality she needed to inhabit. Not a mask over the truth — an alternate truth she constructed and moved into. And in that constructed reality, the grief was real. This is the second episode in a five-part breakdown of Kouri Richins' psychology. The 911 call that went from hysterical to composed in hours. The Google searches that read like a project manager's status report. The email she sent Summit County preemptively explaining away suspicion she could feel building. And the TV appearance that reveals the most disturbing thing about this kind of mind: the sincerity. She may have meant every word. And that's worse than if she'd been faking.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Professor Jonathan Miles' path to teaching organizational behavior at Rice Business is anything but conventional. Before entering academia, he earned a degree in computer science, worked in IT and even launched a comic book store — experiences that shaped his perspective on leadership, influence and human behavior.Today, Miles is known for challenging students to think differently about power, workplace dynamics and ethical decision-making. A co-adviser at the Virani Undergraduate School of Business and voted “Teacher of the Year” by our undergraduate business students, he has built courses that push both MBAs and undergraduates to confront uncomfortable truths about what it really takes to lead and succeed. In this episode, Miles joins host Maya Pomroy ‘22 to discuss why so many talented people struggle to advocate for themselves, what his comic book store taught him about entrepreneurship, and why influence is often misunderstood. He also shares his perspective on AI's growing impact on the workplace, the future of Rice Business and his hope for bringing undergrads and graduate students together in ways no business school has done before.Episode Guide:0:00 Introduction & Teacher of the Year Award2:29 Growing Up: Family, Influences, and Early Life4:40 The Winding Path: Journalism to Engineering to Computer Science7:40 The Value of Exploring Outside Your Major9:57 From IT to Teaching: Discovering a Calling15:56 Teaching Power & Influence at Rice17:55 The Biggest Misconception About Influence at Work22:15 Professionalism & Ethics: Why People Break Their Own Moral Frameworks25:04 AI in the Workplace: Hype, Risk, and the Road Ahead30:19 What Jon Hopes Students Take Away32:27 The Comic Book Store: Lessons in Entrepreneurship37:46 The Future of Rice Business & the New Building40:50 Closing and ConclusionThe Owl Have You Know Podcast is a production of Rice Business and is produced by University FM.Episode Quotes:Why hard work alone won't get you promoted20:24: I find it interesting that, in the eight years I've been teaching it here at Rice, I don't think I've ever had a class where the majority of people in the class, when I talk about the things that hold them back from power, won't raise their hands and say, "Yeah, at least one of those affects me." And, you know, things like—we call it the just world hypothesis—the idea of like, oh, well, you know, merit exists, and if I do a really good job, I will rise in the organization because people will notice. And we talk about the fact that our research is pretty clear that that's not true. We have years of research on this that says your boss doesn't have any idea what you do, and your boss's boss certainly doesn't. And so this idea of you have to advocate for yourself, even though it doesn't feel great to you. Leaders vs. bad managers36:09: What I told my students is, "I'm not here to make you into great leaders. Some of you will be great leaders because you have that natural piece, and I'm going to teach you this, and if you follow and do this information, you'll become a great leader. But I guarantee you, if you just follow what I say, you won't be a bad manager. You won't be a bad leader." And I've had enough bad leaders over the years that my crusade is to get rid of them, to try and, try and teach people so that we don't have them. And I'm hoping that the people who come out of here with Rice MBAs, and even our Rice undergrad degrees, have the understanding of how to be a manager that does the right things. What Jonathan hopes for the future of Rice Business45:19: I hope that we can maintain doing that because we could provide our undergrads with a tremendous ability to get a great education, and one that they're not going to get in an undergrad program elsewhere, from people who really know what they're talking about and are good at teaching it.Show Links: TranscriptGuest Profile:Jonathan Miles | Rice BusinessJonathan Miles | LinkedIn
Congratulations! You have been made the cafe manager! Now what? Well, you are now occupying one of the most critical roles in all of coffee retail. As a leader you have a lot of growth opportunities and can make a massive difference as you serve the company, the staff, and the customers. The first six months - a year is a pretty critical time where you either build trust and establish healthy outlooks and habits, or you succumb to the dysfunction and stress that management without structure and purpose falls into. Dewberry sits down with Danza for one of the rawest conversations ever on The Danza Project. After serving 18 years in prison, he speaks openly about the mindset that led him there, the reality of street loyalty, and the truth most people don't want to admit. From taking a life at a young age to realizing how the streets reward disloyalty, this is a conversation about accountability, growth, and breaking cycles. This isn't about glorifying the past — it's about exposing it. In this episode, Dewberry breaks down: What “loyalty” really costs in the streets Why most people are being misled by the culture The truth behind disloyalty, snitching, and real-life consequences How prison changed his mindset and purpose Why the next generation is being set up to fail Fatherhood, discipline, and building something real This is real game.
