Captain Will Jasper served in the Baltimore City Fire Department for 28 years, spending his career in some of the city's busiest and most storied companies. He entered the Fire Academy on February 22, 1994, and upon graduation was assigned to Truck 14 in Northeast Baltimore. He soon transferred and spent the next seven years in some of Baltimore's heaviest fire service companies, including Engine 52, Engine 8, and Engine 33. During this time, he was mentored by some of the BCFD's most legendary and seasoned firefighters and officers. Throughout his career, Captain Jasper served with distinction, earning numerous commendations and awards. Promoted to Lieutenant in 2004, he was assigned to Engine 55 in Pigtown before transferring back to Engine 52. In 2009, he was promoted to Captain and took command of Engine 20 in Walbrook Junction, where he remained until his retirement in 2022. Captain Jasper was known as a mission-oriented leader with a deep well of operational experience. On the most challenging fires, he was the steadying presence that chief officers relied upon—offering calm, sound advice that helped bring order to chaotic scenes. Born on February 2, 1968, and raised in Northeast Baltimore's Woodbourne neighborhood, Will attended Northern High School before entering the United States Army. He served honorably with the 82nd Airborne and the 2nd Infantry Division. Captain Jasper was a respected leader within the BCFD—admired by subordinates, peers, and supervisors for his composure under pressure and his unwavering dedication to the job. He mentored countless firefighters over nearly three decades, and the wisdom he shared continues to influence and strengthen the department today.

France this week promoted Alfred Dreyfus, the Jewish army captain wrongly convicted of treason in 1894, to the rank of brigadier general as an act of reparation in a notorious case of antisemitism that has caused outrage for generations. The move is seen as a symbolic step in the fight against antisemitism in modern France, at a time of growing alarm over hate crimes targeting Jews in the country in the context of the Gaza war. French President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu signed the promotion into law on Monday, and it was published in the so-called Official Journal of new legislation on Tuesday. Parliament’s lower house unanimously approved the legislation in June, and the Senate backed it earlier this month. KAN's Mark Weiss spoke with Yael Perl-Ruiz , the great grand-daughter of Alfred Dreyfus.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
You ever hear someone say, “That leader just has presence”? We've all seen it. But presence without substance? That's just performance. And in this influence economy, performance doesn't cut it anymore. In this episode, I'm breaking down the shift leaders need to make if they want to be trusted, respected, and remembered. I'm calling out the outdated obsession with personality and charisma, and making a strong case for something deeper—leadership identity. I'll explain why leadership identity is the new executive presence and how it positions you as the kind of leader who doesn't just get seen—but gets trusted, followed, and chosen. I also share real-world proof from a client who made the shift and completely changed how she was perceived and promoted. If you've ever felt like you have the skills but still get overlooked… let's fix that. What you'll learn: Why personality gets attention but identity builds authority How executive presence is evolving in today's trust-fragile world What leadership identity actually is—and what it's not The key questions to ask to uncover your leadership identity How to align your communication, content, and presence to reflect who you really are Your Next Steps: Access the white paper: External Influence: The Currency Every Leader Must Carry. https://externalinfluence.us Follow Shayna on LinkedIn: http://linkedin.com/in/shaynarattler Visit our website: https://shaynadavisconsulting.com

Tackling The Mafia And Dangers of Informants: Retired FBI Agent Speaks. Special Episode. “This is a part of FBI work the public almost never sees,” Vinton explains. “When you're Tackling The Mafia And the Dangers of Informants, you're operating in a world where loyalty is a currency, and betrayal can cost lives or careers.” Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast social media like their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other social media platforms. In a powerful Special Episode now streaming on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, and most every major Podcast platform, retired FBI agent and author Tom Vinton offers a rare, firsthand look into the world of organized crime, dangerous informants, and the internal risks faced by federal investigators. Promoted across Facebook, Instagram, and other News outlets, the episode takes listeners deep into the heart of New York's most violent Mafia crime families, and into the shadows where informants and agents walk a thin line between justice and treachery. Inside the Mafia Wars of the 1980s The episode dives into the turbulent 1980s, a decade defined by upheaval within the Gambino Crime Family, from the Crime Boss's leadership to his shocking 1985 assassination and the meteoric rise of another Boss. Vinton recalls the era as one marked by international heroin trafficking, brutal territorial battles, and the historic Mafia Commission Trial, which took aim at the leadership of all five New York Mafia families. Tackling The Mafia And Dangers of Informants: Retired FBI Agent Speaks. Special Episode. Look for supporting articles about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin . “The Commission Trial was a seismic shift,” Vinton says. “For the first time, the FBI could expose how the families cooperated, organized, and profited. It changed the direction of organized crime investigations forever.” The Perils of Informants: “A Necessary Evil” Vinton's book, Sanctioned Treachery: Portrait of a Drug Informant, becomes a centerpiece of the episode. Based on his decades-long career investigating organized crime and supervising the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force, the novel brings to life the dangerous dance between agents and the informants they rely on. “Informants are both indispensable and incredibly risky,” Vinton notes. “Some agents have had their careers destroyed, or even ended up in jail, because they trusted the wrong person.” Tackling The Mafia And Dangers of Informants: Retired FBI Agent Speaks. Available for free on their website and streaming on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other podcast platforms. The book follows fictional FBI agent Eddie Michaels and his informant Alonzo “King” Curtis, a charismatic but ruthless operator whose moral compass is as fluid as the criminal underworld he moves through. Drawing on real-life cases, Vinton reveals how informants can both solve major crimes and simultaneously jeopardize investigations, or the agents themselves. “This could have happened,” Vinton says plainly. “Some of it did.” A Career Built on Crime-Fighting and Storytelling Tom Vinton's own story is as compelling as the cases he describes. Born in New Rochelle and a graduate of Holy Cross, he served as a Marine Corps infantry officer before joining the FBI. His assignments took him ultimately to New York, where he supervised massive organized crime and drug investigations. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast episode is available for free on their website , Apple Podcasts , Spotify and most major podcast platforms. After retiring from the Bureau, Vinton became Deputy Commissioner of the Westchester County Police and launched a consulting business. But writing remained a passion. Tackling The Mafia And Dangers of Informants. “A professor once told me that writing would serve me no matter what career I chose,” Vinton recalls. “He was right. These stories needed to be told.” Originally published in 2005, Sanctioned Treachery was lost when the publisher went bankrupt. Now updated, re-edited, and released, it's earning renewed praise. One early review called it “a grand thriller… an exciting breath-holding adventure disguised as fiction.” How the FBI Fights Organized Crime Throughout the episode, Vinton breaks down how the FBI tackles criminal enterprises, not just individuals, using tools like: Undercover operations Court-authorized wiretaps and surveillance Asset forfeiture Informants and cooperating witnesses Inter-agency task forces RICO statutes “The goal is to dismantle the entire infrastructure of a criminal organization,” Vinton says. “Not just arrest a few people. We target the enterprise, its money, its leadership, its operations.” Tackling The Mafia And Dangers of Informants: Retired FBI Agent Speaks. Special Episode. The full podcast episode is streaming now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and across Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. A Must-Listen Episode for True Crime Fans For those interested in the FBI, Mafia history, or the high-stakes world of criminal informants, this Special Episode delivers unmatched insight. “It's a reminder,” Vinton says, “that the line between justice and danger is thinner than the public ever realizes.” Listeners can tune in on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, and most every major Podcast platform and follow updates on Facebook, Instagram, and other major News outlets. James Stewart (J.D.M.) speaks with Alexandra Giancarlo, Janice Forsyth, and Braden Te Hiwi about their book, Beyond the Rink: Behind the Images of Residential School Hockey. In 1951, the Sioux Lookout Black Hawks from Pelican Lake Indian Residential School toured Ottawa and Toronto after winning the Thunder Bay district championship. Promoted as proof of the residential school system's “success,” the tour masked the realities of abuse and forced assimilation. Beyond the Rink by Alexandra Giancarlo, Janice Forsyth, and Braden Te Hiwi—created with Survivors Kelly Bull, Chris Cromarty, and David Wesley—examines this legacy, celebrating the team's achievements while exposing hockey's role in colonial narratives and reclaiming their story to envision a more just future for Indigenous peoples and Canada. This episode exposes exactly how it happens—and gives you the framework to stop it.What This Episode Is AboutIn this episode, we tackle the single most frustrating paradox for women in leadership: being praised but not promoted. You're "invaluable" but not invaluable enough for a new title. You're "appreciated" but not appreciated enough to be paid what you're worth. This is the Recognition-Reward Gap, and it's a systemic pattern that keeps talented women stuck. We'll explore why women receive subjective praise ("great team player!") while men get objective, results-focused feedback that leads to promotions. This isn't just a bad performance review; it's a form of "gratitude fatigue"—the exhaustion that comes from being thanked instead of being advanced. We'll break down the real costs of accepting "thank you" as currency and give you the framework to stop it.Resources Mentioned[COACHING PROGRAM] The Ignite Your Leadership Power Accelerator: Ready to turn this pattern around? Jack Elderton and Darcy Cox break down West Ham's 2-1 loss to Leeds United in the Premier League. Nuno Espírito Santo took a risk at Elland Road by picking a similar line up to that from the previous fixture, a 0-2 loss to Brentford, which ended up backfiring as the Hammers' put in yet another hugely concerning performance that saw Daniel Farke's team ease past a fragile West Ham. The introduction of Freddie Potts, Mateus Fernandes, Soungoutou Magassa and Kyle Walker-Peters might have given West Ham a lift in the second half, but first half goals from Brenden Aaronson and Joe Rodon meant Fernandes' 90th minute header was too late to salvage any points in what is fast becoming a massive fight for survival at the bottom of the Premier League table. Jack and Darcy dissect the game, discussing the surprising team selection from Nuno, including the repeated use of inverted full-backs in Oliver Scarles and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, as well as the inclusion of Tomáš Souček and Andy Irving in the middle of the park at the expense of Magassa, Fernandes and Potts. They also break down the tactical ideas from both sides, the importance of physicality in the Premier League and West Ham's struggles to compete, how and why the side improved in the second half and if it's possible to find any positives in the underlying data to suggest the London Stadium might not be hosting Championship football next season. Robert Rodriguez went from enforcing prison rules… to running the prison from the inside. After serving in the military, Robert became a correctional officer in Georgia — stepping into what he describes as one of the most corrupt prison systems in America. As a young officer, he quickly got swept into a brutal culture of violence, cover-ups, and unchecked power. He participated in beatings, witnessed extreme abuse, and says officers were rewarded for silence. Promoted to sergeant, Robert was rising through the system — until one tragic night. A fatal drunk driving accident led to a 14-year prison sentence… and everything flipped. The former sergeant entered the very world he once controlled — now wearing shackles instead of a badge. Inside, Robert didn't just survive — he became a high-ranking gang member, involved in smuggling contraband, controlling prison politics, and even having illicit relationships with staff. He eventually helped run operations behind bars. #PrisonStories #TrueCrimePodcast #DirtyCop #CorrectionalOfficer #WentToPrison #LawEnforcementTruth #RedemptionStory #LockedInPodcast Thank you to BLUECHEW & GLD for sponsoring this episode: BlueChew: Visit https://bluechew.com/ and use promo code LOCKEDIN at checkout to get your first month of BlueChew & pay five bucks for shipping. Jack Elderton and Cal Goodall break down West Ham's 0-2 loss to Brentford in the Premier League. Nuno Espírito Santo rung in the changes at the London Stadium on Monday night, with surprise inclusions for West Ham academy graduate Oliver Scarles and Scottish international Andy Irving starting the game against The Bees. Goals from Igor Thiago and Mathias Jensen were enough to give Keith Andrews an away league win, the first of his nascent managerial career, with very little response from Nuno's side. "With a little time... we're going to become a proper family..."In spite of our insistence it was a bad episode, we have to admit, we were wrong. Leadership is both a skill and a science. Today's focus is on what happens the day AFTER a promotion. The problem with promotions is that being good at your job and being good at leading people can be two distinctly different skill sets. This episode will change the way you think about leadership development. Ready to learn more? Join us!Noel Massie, former VP of Operations at UPS, discusses intentional leadership and value-based development. In his role at UPS, Massie supported and guided package delivery and logistics services in the US, and he continues to mentor young leaders and supervisors even after his retirement in 2019. Drawing from his 40-year career overseeing 200,000 employees, Massie emphasizes that leadership is about influencing behavior without coercion, and that newly promoted supervisors need structured training rather than being thrown into roles unprepared. His book, Congrats! You've Been Promoted, provides practical frameworks like the “four by five method” for feedback and conflict resolution, targeting frontline leaders who are promoted based on technical skills but lack leadership training. You'll learn how conflict can be handled without raising your voice, why feedback needs a 4:1 ratio to actually work, and the real reason newly promoted supervisors derail within their first year. Cal and Darcy break down Nuno Espírito Santo's second game in charge of the Hammers, Arsenal 2-0 West Ham in the Premier League. We discuss what we expected from the game and whether it ended up being a case of West Ham playing badl or if Arsenal are just that good. We analyse how Nuno attempted to stop Arsenal's onslaught, what tactical changes he made during the game and how Mikel Arteta responded. We also talk through both of Arsenal goals and the tactical underpinnings and mistakes which lead to them. We also use the international break as an opportunity to evaluate West Ham's performances so far under Nuno, what improvements we've seen since the former Nottingham Forest Head Coach took charge, what we haven't liked as much and ultimately if the switch in manager was the correct call and what the rest of the season looks like for West Ham now Nuno is in charge. Host: Shannon Huffman Polson Shannon Huffman Polson is a former Apache helicopter pilot, speaker, and author of "The Grit Factor: Courage, Resilience, and Leadership in the Most Male-Dominated Organization in the World." She is the founder of The Grit Institute, where she helps purpose-driven leaders build grit and resilience. Guest: Phyllis Wilson Phyllis Wilson is a retired U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 5 with a military career spanning nearly four decades, including deployments to Iraq as a senior intelligence analyst. She is the president of the Military Women's Memorial in Washington, DC, the only national memorial honoring the service of women in all branches and eras of the U.S. military. Description In this episode of The Grit Factor, Shannon Huffman Polson talks with Phyllis Wilson about her remarkable journey from a young recruit to a leader in the Military Women's Memorial. Phyllis shares her experiences in the military, the challenges she faced, and her mission to preserve the stories of America's servicewomen. Summary Phyllis Wilson discusses her military career, the importance of preserving the stories of servicewomen, and her leadership at the Military Women's Memorial. She reflects on the challenges of being a woman in the military, the impact of her work, and the lessons learned from her service. Key Highlights 00:00 – Challenge Accepted Phyllis opens by reflecting on moments when people underestimate her: “Sit back and watch, buddy. I'll show you what I'm capable of doing.” She frames underestimation as fuel for proving herself rather than discouragement. 03:17 – Joining the Army for Opportunity Phyllis describes joining the military to afford college — a “four-year plan” that turned into 37 years of service. She was drawn in by education, travel, and a sense of purpose. 05:09 – Motherhood & Warrant Officer Training Phyllis recounts attending the Warrant Officer Candidate Program while raising young children: Describes grueling inspections and “hazing” culture of the time. Brought her kids to training at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, with classmates helping out. Reflects on resilience and community support. 09:07 – Climbing to Chief Warrant Officer 5 She breaks down the rarity of her rank: Out of 1 million Army personnel, only ~822 are CW5s. Highlights the tight Warrant Officer network and the importance of relying on collective expertise, not pretending to know everything. 10:22 – Imposter Syndrome Phyllis candidly talks about moments of doubt at senior levels: “You pinch yourself—am I really supposed to be here?” She learned to trust the leaders who believed in her and to “just do the work.” 13:25 – Iraq: Life-or-Death Intel Decisions As a senior intelligence analyst in Special Operations, she was responsible for nightly mission targeting: Describes pressure of ensuring missions aren't sent to “dry holes” or booby-trapped locations. Talks about guilt when missions result in deaths, even if assessments were correct. “Sometimes when they don't come home alive, you kick yourself… Can I keep doing this?” Coping through treadmill running 70–80 miles a week to manage stress. 17:36 – Serving Alongside Her Sons Phyllis' sons were deployed in Iraq simultaneously: Promoted one to Sergeant during Thanksgiving. Mixed pride and deep fear, especially near the end of their tours. 21:43 – Special Operations as a Woman She thrived in Special Ops because the mission came first and gender was irrelevant: “I never even noticed I was the only woman in the room… I count lefties, not women.” She stresses speaking with value, not just to be heard. 25:57 – Leadership & Trust Under Pressure Trust looks different in combat vs. garrison. She highlights how earning trust through competence is essential when lives are on the line. 29:45 – Childhood Foundations Growing up as a tomboy in a strict but loving household shaped her confidence and resilience. She recalls lifeguarding as a teen and learning to develop “thick skin” early. 33:45 – Evolving Sense of Purpose Over decades, her purpose deepened through service and exposure to other cultures. She learned profound lessons on contentment and gratitude from communities abroad. 39:01 – Post-Military Transition After hanging up the uniform, Phyllis felt unexpectedly lost. She founded “Wounded Warriors Have Families Too” to support families of injured service members, restoring her sense of mission. 44:28 – Leading the Military Women's Memorial As president, she discovered how many women's stories remain untold. The Memorial's database has 325,000+ stories but represents only ~10% of all who served. She's passionate about preserving and amplifying these histories. 51:52 – Defending Women's Stories Today In an era where some narratives are being erased, Phyllis emphasizes protecting and elevating military women's stories — including those who died recently. “Our job is to honor and tell the stories… not drag their names through the mud.” 58:01 – Lifelong Mission Phyllis' driving force today: “How could I not have known these stories?” She's committed to making sure America knows the names and deeds of the women who served. 1:01:20 – Closing Shannon thanks Phyllis for her leadership and storytelling. Phyllis' journey is framed as a call to preserve legacy, build resilience, and lead with purpose. The Whistleblower Protection Act needs to be promoted heavily in the state of Minnesota. The term "Whistleblower Protection Act" (WPA) primarily refers to the U.S. federal law enacted in 1989, which shields federal employees who report government waste, fraud, and abuse from retaliation. Subsequent legislation, like the Whistleblower Protection Enhancement Act of 2012 (WPEA), has strengthened these protections. The scope of whistleblower protections in the United States extends beyond the original WPA to cover employees of federal contractors and specific industries. Several federal agencies, including the Office of Special Counsel (OSC) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), enforce these laws.
