fWotD Episode 2978: Pari Khan Khanum Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 30 June 2025, is Pari Khan Khanum.Pari Khan Khanum (Persian: پریخان خانم, romanized: Pariḵān Ḵānom; August 1548 – 12 February 1578) was a Safavid princess, daughter of the second Safavid shah, Tahmasp I, and his Circassian consort, Sultan-Agha Khanum. She was her father's favourite child and allowed to partake in court activities, gradually becoming an influential figure who attracted the attentions of the prominent leaders of the Qizilbash tribes.Pari Khan played a central role in the succession crisis after her father's death in 1576. She thwarted the attempt of her brother Haydar Mirza and his supporters at securing his ascention and enthroned her favoured candidate and brother, Ismail Mirza, as Ismail II. Whereas she expected gratitude from her brother, Ismail curtailed her power and put her under house arrest. Pari Khan may have been the mastermind behind his assassination in 1577. She endorsed the enthronement of her elder brother Mohammad Khodabanda, who was almost blind. Pari Khan expected to rule while Mohammad remained a figurehead but his wife, Khayr al-Nisa Begum, emerged as an opponent to Pari Khan and engineered Pari Khan's strangulation at the age of around thirty.Regarded by some as the most powerful woman in Safavid history, Pari Khan was able to dominate for a short period the ineffective Safavid court in a society that imposed harsh restrictions on high-class women. She was praised by her contemporaries for her intelligence and competence, though in later chronicles she was portrayed as a villain who murdered two of her brothers and aspired to usurp the throne. She was a patron of poets, among them Mohtasham Kashani who wrote five eulogies for her. Writers of the time dedicated works to her, like Abdi Beg Shirazi's Takmelat al-akhbar, and she was compared to Fatima, the daughter of Muhammad, prophet of Islam. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:44 UTC on Monday, 30 June 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Pari Khan Khanum on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Emma.

Welcome back to Road to Hajj. This isn't a comprehensive Hajj guide — just a simple, day-by-day overview of what the hujjaj do, with some reflections on its deeper meaning.Today is the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah — Yawm an-Nahr — the Day of Sacrifice. This is the peak of the Hajj journey. To understand this day, we look at the story of Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام, starting from the 8th of Dhul-Hijjah, Yawm at-Tarwiyah — the day of pondering. That's when he began to reflect deeply on a troubling dream: that he was slaughtering his son.By the 9th, Yawm ‘Arafah, the meaning became clear to him. He shared the dream with his son, Prophet Ismail عليه السلام, asking what he thought. And Ismail replied:يَا أَبَتِ افْعَلْ مَا تُؤْمَرُ ۖ سَتَجِدُنِي إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ مِنَ الصَّابِرِينَ“O my dear father, do as you're commanded. You'll find me, inshaAllah, from among the patient.” [Surah as-Saffat, 37:102]So now we arrive at the 10th — the day they went out to fulfil the dream. But Prophet Ismail asked: let's do this further away from home, in Mina. He didn't want his mother, Hajar, to hear any cries or pain.So they walked together — about five kilometres — from Makkah to Mina. And when the moment came… when Ibrahim was ready to place his son's head on the rock, when both father and son surrendered completely to Allah — Allah called out:قَدْ صَدَّقْتَ الرُّؤْيَا“You have fulfilled the vision.” [Surah as-Saffat, 37:105]Allah stopped the sacrifice. He didn't require it. He never did.Because Islam isn't a religion that demands suffering to please God.Prophet Ibrahim lived in a time when it was common across cultures and religions to sacrifice lives to appease the gods. Blood offerings were the norm. But this — this was something different.Allah was teaching a lesson — not just to Ibrahim, but to all of humanity. He doesn't want your pain. He wants your heart.Even though Ibrahim was willing to go through with it — and Ismail was ready to be sacrificed — Allah intervened. He replaced the son with a ram.And Allah says in the Qur'an:لَن يَنَالَ ٱللَّهَ لُحُومُهَا وَلَا دِمَاؤُهَا وَلَٰكِن يَنَالُهُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ مِنكُمْ“It is neither their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah, but what reaches Him is your taqwa.” [Surah al-Hajj, 22:37]That's what Allah wants — your sincerity, your consciousness of Him. Not the meat. Not the blood. Not the spectacle. So what does this teach us?Islam isn't about suffering. It's not a religion that glorifies pain. It doesn't ask you to harm yourself to prove your devotion. It's not a masochistic faith.Yes, life includes hardship. Yes, we're tested — sometimes with ease, sometimes with pain. But it's not the pain that earns us reward. It's how we respond. Are we grateful in times of ease? Are we patient in times of trial? And more importantly — do we strive to improve our condition?Islam doesn't teach us to glorify suffering. It teaches us to alleviate it — in ourselves, and in others. If you're tested with wealth, you're expected to use it to help those in need.If you're tested with poverty, you're encouraged to work, strive, and lift yourself and your community. And that's why many acts of worship in Islam are built around economic responsibility.Take zakat — you can only give it if you've saved and earned beyond a certain threshold.Or Hajj — it's only fard on those who are financially and physically able, and who can leave enough behind for their families.Islam encourages productivity. It sees wealth as a tool for good — not something to be ashamed of.As the Prophet ﷺ said to ‘Amr ibn al-‘Ās:نِعْمَ الْمَالُ الصَّالِحُ لِلرَّجُلِ الصَّالِحِ“How excellent is good wealth in the hands of a righteous man.” [Musnad Ahmad]So today, as we remember the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim and Ismail, we reflect not just on obedience — but on the mercy of Allah.Even when both father and son were ready for the ultimate sacrifice, Allah said: That's enough. I wanted your heart, not your hurt.Imagine that moment. For a father, it's easier to suffer himself than to see his child in pain. For a child, especially one so young, nothing matters more than his own life — yet Ismail was willing to give it up for Allah. That's the essence of devotion. But Allah said no. He honoured them, preserved their story, and replaced the act with one that the ummah continues today — the udḥiyah. So when we celebrate Eid al-Adha, we're not just barbecuing meat. We're remembering a powerful lesson: that true devotion lies in taqwa, not torment. That is Yawm an-Nahr — the Day of Sacrifice.May Allah accept our qurban, our efforts, and our devotion.Wassalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh. Welcome back to Road to Hajj, a simple overview of the Hajj rituals and a light reflection on the meanings behind them. This isn't meant to be a comprehensive fiqh guide — just an easy companion for those wanting to connect deeper with the journey.Today is the 11th of Dhul Hijjah. The hujjaj are now spending most of the night — if not all of it — back in Mina, the city of tents. It's sunnah to stay the whole night, but wajib to remain for at least half of it.Now Mina isn't a place of intense rituals. There's no specific dhikr or du‘a you're required to do. The main challenge here, honestly, is managing basic needs — especially toilets. You've got limited facilities and a massive number of people.BeQuranic is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. But what should we be doing in Mina?Allah tells us in the Qur'an:فَإِذَا قَضَيْتُمْ مَنَاسِكَكُمْ فَاذْكُرُوا ٱللَّهَ كَذِكْرِكُمْ آبَاءَكُمْ أَوْ أَشَدَّ ذِكْرًا“When you have completed your rites, remember Allah as you used to remember your forefathers — or with even greater remembrance.” [Surah al-Baqarah, 2:200]The Arabs in Jahiliyyah used to sit around their tents in Mina talking about how great their ancestors were — telling tales of glory and lineage. Allah says: that's not the point. Don't just talk about the greatness of those who came before. Remember Allah instead. We see this same thing today in our Ummah. “Oh, we had amazing scholars in the past… Muslim scientists… Al-Khawarizmi, Ibn Sina, so on…” That's wonderful — but what are we doing now?So while in Mina, do dhikr. Be in remembrance. Don't just glorify the past — contribute to the present. From the 11th, 12th, and optionally the 13th of Dhul Hijjah, the hujjaj will be doing the stoning at the Jamarat. On the 10th, they only stoned the largest one — Jamrat al-‘Aqabah. But on the 11th and 12th, they now go to all three: the small, middle, and large pillars.BeQuranic is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. What's the story behind this?It goes back to Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام.On the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, when he was on his way to fulfil the dream and sacrifice his son Ismail, Shaytan tried to intervene. At three different points, Shaytan appeared to him, whispering doubts:“You've done enough. You've sacrificed so much. You built the Kaaba. You passed all your tests. Why are you doing this? Why would Allah ask this of you?”At each of those three points, Ibrahim picked up seven small stones, threw them in the direction of Shaytan and said:Allahu Akbar. Allahu Akbar. And he moved on.Three times — three locations. That's why we have three Jamarat. This wasn't just symbolic. There's a deeper lesson here:When Shaytan comes to you with doubt, with temptation — don't just pray. Move.Ibrahim didn't stay in place. He changed location. He physically moved away from the source of temptation. And we are taught the same thing in our tradition. If you find yourself in a place that leads you to sin, change your place. Remove yourself from toxic environments, from harmful friends, from dangerous routines. The Prophet ﷺ said:المرءُ على دِينِ خَليلِهِ، فليَنظُرْ أحدُكم مَن يُخالِلُ“A person is upon the religion of his close companion, so be mindful who you befriend.” [Tirmidhi]Even in spiritual matters — like nightmares — the Prophet ﷺ told us: if you wake up terrified, don't just make du‘a. Turn to your left, blow lightly three times, and change your sleeping position. Don't stay in the same spot.Again — you're taught to move.So this action of stoning the Jamarat teaches us two powerful lessons:* Shaytan won't stop after the first try. He'll come back, again and again, with new angles and new whispers.* If you persist in dhikr and take real action, he'll eventually stop. The whispering of that particular sin will fade — as long as you remain steadfast.Be aware of your surroundings. Be conscious of your mental state. If you know you fall into sin when you're alone, change that habit. Call a friend. Go to the masjid. Be around better people. You're not expected to win against Shaytan on sheer willpower alone. He's had millennia of practice.Ibrahim taught us that — when Shaytan whispers, you say Allahu Akbar, and then… you move.May Allah protect us from the whispers of Shaytan, and guide us to environments and companions that bring us closer to Him.Ameen.Thanks for reading BeQuranic! In today's episode, Ismail dives into the depths of creating and making art, making what makes you happy, doing something you are profoundly deeply connected to. I've been exploring the journey of being a new "writer," and the possibilities of creating from your imagination are such a beautiful process. We conclude with a lively debate on whether tragedy serves as a catalyst for inspiring art—does hardship enhance the creative journey? Do we need tragedy and misery to make good art? Well, join me as we have a fun chat.
Unfortunately the connection was lost during the interview and we were unable to reconnect with Hafidh Koovadia to continue the conversation. We apologies for the break.

Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrases TO GET UP ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE BED and TO MAKE THE BEDIn this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn the English phrase to get up on the wrong side of the bed or to wake up on the wrong side of the bed or to get out of the wrong side of the bed. There's a lot of different variations to this phrase, but basically it means that you're in a bad mood. If I was crabby and cranky, Jen might say, hey, did you get up on the wrong side of the bed? I wanted to make sure I said this version of the phrase, did you get up on the wrong side of the bed this morning? And that would simply mean, wow, did you not sleep good, did you have a bad sleep, and now you're in a bad mood.WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? GO TO YOUTUBE AND SEARCH, "BOB THE CANADIAN"If you enjoy these lessons please consider supporting me at: http://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadianThe other phrase I wanted to teach you today is simply to make the bed. This is what you do after you get up. You put the pillows nice at the top of your bed and you put the blankets nice and flat. We have what's called a sheet, and then we have a comforter. And we just kind of make the bed every morning after we get up. So we put all the blankets nice and flat and tidy.So to review, to get up on the wrong side of the bed or to wake up on the wrong side of the bed, or to get up out of the wrong side of the bed, however you say it, it means you're in a bad mood. And to make the bed simply means. Yeah, to put all of the blankets and sheets flat so they look nice.So let's look at a comment from a previous video. If you're wondering why I'm out of sorts, it's so bright out here, I have to find my sunglasses. You know, you'll notice I can hardly keep my one eye open. I'm not sure if the camera communicates that. But hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video. This comment is from Ismail. Hi, Bob. That sign that says more points, more ways on the gas pump, I think it's about a rewards program like getting points when you buy gas. But I wasn't sure how it works exactly in that place. Just curious, what's it all about? And my response, yes, you get points when you buy gas. This is from the video from a couple days ago at the gas station. You can then use the points to get 4 cents a liter off your purchase. I think you need about 4,000 points to do that.So thanks, Ismail, for that question. Yeah, at our gas station and at a lot of places, you get points if you buy certain things and then you can use Those points like money. I don't know how many points you get for a tank of gas, but I do know that every once in a while I have enough points that I can get 4 cents a liter off.So what am I doing here? I wanted to show you dandelions. So we are in prime dandelion season. Dandelions are, of course, these little yellow flowers that show up in lawns probably in a lot of different places in the world. I'm kind of curious whether you have dandelions where you live or not. For the next week or so, there will be a lot of dandelions around. Like, this is a local soccer field. They do a lot of work here to make sure the grass is nice and green. But the dandelions, they still come. They are pretty good at growing almost everywhere in Ontario, Canada.I don't want to go over there, but in the distance, there's actually some sort of school event. It's not my school. I wonder if it's a track and field meet. A track and field meet is where you run the 100 meter, the 800 meter. You do long jump and triple jump and all those other kinds of events. Because there's children involved. I don't want to walk over there. They want their privacy and just not a good idea. If I'm in a public place, like when I'm at the publSupport the show

Interview with Nesrin Ismail:Makeup Department Head Nesrin Ismail has spent the last 20 years honing her craft and demonstrating the versatility of her makeup expertise, from full beauty glam to action-driven special effects makeup, across a range of high-profile television shows and films. Nesrin most recently served as the Makeup Department Head of the hit Hulu comedy series "Deli Boys" where the range of her makeup expertise was on full display - from creating vibrant, full glam makeup looks, inspired by '80s Bollywood and Pakistani, Middle East and South Asian cultures, to overseeing extensive sfx blood and prosthetics makeup. Her other recent credits include department heading the Peacock Original series "Mr. Throwback" starring Steph Curry and created by Emmy-nominated Robot Chicken Creators Matthew and Daniel Libman; as well as the drama feature "Love Is_" from NAACP Image Award winner and Emmy-nominated Writer/Director Mara Brock Akil. Originally from Egypt, Nesrin moved to the US to attend makeup and fx school, determined to build a career in film and TV. Early on, she had the opportunity to assist several celebrity makeup artists before she transitioned into the indie film world, where she quickly learned how to handle everything from beauty and full glam makeup, to special effects. Working on independent films required a versatile approach and indie films is where Nesrin sharpened and honed her expertise. Seeking larger-scale opportunities, Nesrin made the leap and moved to Atlanta, where she landed her career-defining break on Season 5 of The Walking Dead. She quickly advanced and was offered the position of Key Makeup Artist for Season 6, then continued her career working on incredible projects such as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. She then worked as a special effects makeup artist on Chicago P.D. where she spent four seasons mastering high- intensity, action-driven makeup effects, before becoming a department head in her own right. Amin Gulgee defies easy categorisation: he's a metal sculptor, a curator, and one of Pakistan's most innovative and cherished artists, the beating heart of his home city of Karachi's creative scene. His metalwork is as dramatic and eccentric as Amin is. He's in your face, uncompromising, a living and breathing performance piece.Amin also comes from a prestigious family: his father, Ismail Gulgee, was one of Pakistan's most famous modernists, creating abstract paintings that have been exhibited across the globe, and even sketching heads of state like Reagan and Gaddafi. In 2007, Ismail and Amin's mother Zaro were tragically murdered by their driver. It was Amin who found their bodies, in their house which adjoins his own studio and gallery. Much of Amin's work since has been an attempt to come to terms and heal from this most tragic of events.Presenter Harry Stott meets Amin on location in his Karachi studio-cum-gallery-cum-home, as he prepares to open a new museum of his father's work – the ‘most momentous' thing he has ever attempted. We listen in as Amin shows us the calligraphy adorned doors which he has created for the museum's entrance. We go inside his studio to hear about his creative process more widely. And we hear Amin come to terms with the tragedy of his parents' death and the solace that he finds in his workshop.Amidst the tumult of this momentous museum opening in the already tumultuous city of Karachi, this episode of In the Studio attempts to understand how Amin's two year process of creation, curation and healing will change his creative process for the years to come.Presenter & Producer: Harry Stott Co-producer & Fixer: Adam Fahy-Majeed Exec Producer: Sandra Ferrari Sound Design & Engineering: Alan Leer, Lizzy AndrewsA Message Heard ProductionImage: Amin Gulgee (Credit: Humayun Memon)

Danny Ismail, co-head of strategic research at Green Street, joined Nareit's REIT Report podcast to discuss how real estate and REITs are positioned in the current highly volatile market environment created by last week's White House announcement on tariffs.Ismail said there's good reason to fear a slowdown in economic growth resulting from an increase in tariffs, not just from potentially higher import costs, but also a pullback in business investment as well as consumer spending. As for the market response, “we'll see how the next few weeks shake out, but thus far REITs and real estate appear to be a relative safe haven,” Ismail said. One reason for that is the starting valuation of REITs prior to the tariff announcement, where REITs looked attractive relative to the S&P 500. “REITs came into this environment on the cheaper side, while private real estate came in looking fairly valued,” Ismail noted.

The Emotional Intelli-Gents Podcast: Navigating Leadership with Emotional intelligence
In this episode of the Emotional Intelligence Podcast, hosts Ismail and Sameer emphasize the importance of social awareness in emotional intelligence for effective leadership, offering insights and tips on developing this skill through empathy and communication. They discuss challenges faced by technically skilled individuals lacking social awareness and conclude with a call for listener engagement, guiding leaders to enhance their emotional intelligence and create supportive work environments.KEY POINTSSocial awareness is a core principle of emotional intelligence, crucial for leaders to effectively "read the room" and understand others' emotions.Reading the room involves sensing the mood and dynamics in real time to respond appropriately and achieve better outcomes.Social awareness can be developed through empathy, open communication, and genuine curiosity about team members' well-being.Recognizing non-verbal cues, such as body language and engagement levels, is vital in remote and in-person settings.Technically skilled individuals often face challenges due to a lack of social awareness, which can hinder their leadership potential.Effective leaders must be patient, allowing conversations to unfold over time, and be proactive in addressing issues before they escalate.Feel free to send us an email at info@emotionalintelligents.com and share your thoughts or visit us at https://linktr.ee/emotionalintelligents Send us a text
