James Greene, Jr. is the author of the recent Ghostbusters history book, A Convenient Parallel Dimension. His book goes a great job of looking at the struggles to create the different installments in the Ghostbusters franchise, including looking at the conflicts that happened behind the scenes. In this episode of Hungry Trilobyte, James and I spend a fair amount of time discussing how film culture itself was different in the 80s, at the time of the first Ghostbusters, and how that shaped our view of the film 40 years later. — See Show Notes at www.AaronBossig.com Follow me on Twitter, Hive, or Instagram - @AaronBossig
Closing out our series on the Misfits, we start off with a tiny recap on Static Age and discuss the Fly series that inspired the Misfits Return of the Fly song. THX 1138 and the ominous but obvious meaning of We Are 138. Moving on, we get into Walk Among Us, The Creature Walks Among Us and the American Psycho album. The BAT-RAT-SPIDER and Cinemagic Process from The Angry Red Planet, along with one of our favorites, Ray Harryhausen's flying saucers in Earth vs the Flying Saucers. A few real life UFO tales and Teenagers from Outer Space, Invaders from Mars (‘53 and ‘86), with the remake focusing on Stan Winston's creature FX. We also touch on the horrible Astro Zombies film and the Misfits songs they inspired that are so good you can't help but sing along, same goes with The Brain Eaters. We kick off with a lengthy bit on the history of horror in music including Louis Armstrong's Skeleton in the Closet from the film Pennies from Heaven, the man who allowed the devil to tune his guitar in exchange for his soul - Robert Johnson's Me and the Devil Blues, the first true shock rock persona - Screaming' Jay Hawkins' I Put a Spell on You, Bobby “Boris” Pickett and the many variations of the Monster Mash, Splatter Platters and America's fascination with the morbid, Alice Cooper and Ozzy Osbourne's animal mishaps, the Universal madman Dwight Fry, The Cramps and a small rundown on Psychobilly, Horrorbilly, and Gothabilly, 45 Grave and Riboflavin-Flavored Non-Carbonated, Polyunsaturated Blood, Bauhaus and The Damned. Then, we pick up from last week with the Crimson Ghost and Horror Business, the deaths of Nancy Spungeon and Sid Vicious, Tammy, Hitchcock, Bernard Herrmann and the infamous shower scene in Psycho, the documentary 78/52 and the Bomb Under the Table Technique, Diabolique's influence on Psycho and the sequels, Vera Clouzot's untimely death and her work on The Wages of Fear - remade as Sorcerer, Scarface and Raging Bull scenes that copy Psycho, Night of the Living Dead, George A. Sit back and relax because we're starting a series on one of our favorite bands, the Misfits, and a plethora of films, magazines, and celebrities that inspired Misfits songs. On this episode we got into a wide range of topics... the Misfits early days and the Cough/Cool single, Famous Monsters of Filmland, Hollywood Babylon, and other sleazy literature. The cursed film, The Misfits, from 1960 starring Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable, who would both be dead within a short time after filming. We ponder Who Killed Marilyn? with Static Age and Legacy of Brutality, Suicide's Ghost Rider, Wendy O. Williams and anger in punk rock. Plan 9 Records and the films of Ed Wood, most notably Plan 9 from Outer Space from 1959 - the inspiration behind Tim Burton's Ed Wood film from 1994 - and the cast of characters Criswell, Tor Johnson, Bela Lugosi, and Vampira. We also get into how Maila Nurmi aka Vampira inspired not only the Misfits but others in the punk scene as one of the very first goth horror hostesses, inspiring Elvira as well. After our discussion of The Crimson Ghost and Cyclotrode X is where our discussion pauses for this week, until we continue next week with Part II - Horror Business! New Jersey. Home to Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Yo La Tango. . .and the Misfits, a hardcore metal horror rock band from Lodi. In This Music Leaves Stains: The Complete Story of the Misfits (Scarecrow Press, 2013), James Greene Jr. let’s us in on the career of the band and of the various people who have claimed membership within it. The focus, of course, is on the “classic” Walk Among Us version of the band consisting of Jerry Only (the member with the longest tenure in the band), his brother Doyle, Arthur Googy and, arguably the most famous member, Glenn Danzig. Greene’s story highlights the ongoing personal conflicts within the Misfits, conflicts that broke-up some versions of the band only to create new ones. Along the way, Danzig becomes a certified rock star with his eponymously-named band, Danzig, Jerry and Doyle continue on with the Misfits until a rift sends Doyle out of the band, with Jerry continuing on to this day with the Misfits band, music, and (significantly) iconography. James Greene Jr. is a freelance writer who has contribure to Crawdaddy!, Splitsider, and Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader, among others. He is a graduate of the University of Central Florida.
