HELP DAD GET SMARTER IN THE CAN With the Uncle John's Bathroom Reader, a fantastic compendium of useless but very interesting information in book form. Today I've got the guy behind the Uncle John's Bathroom Reader Brian Boone at 2:00 to chat about it. Buy yours in time for Father's Day here! Here is some of the nonsense you might enjoy:Some of the best facts and stories to help dad become the most popular guy at the barbeque. Some real bathroom humor, including the story of “Roland the Farter.”That wonderful piece of trivia regarding the late Mr. Rogers and his affection for bodily functions.‘Tis the season: The baseball plot to kill Castro. What a “rear end robot” is.I love this book and have a bunch of them already. Trust me, great gift for Dad or anyone else, especially teenagers who don't read enough. Five stars, would recommend.

Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Elyse Bruce, Creative Dynamo. Elyse's newest Missy Barrett mystery, The Case of the Missing Muskets, includes a chapter in which Missy and her mother visit the Frank & Friends Show.  Frank and his wife Jere had leg-of-lamb for Easter. They tried to find a jar of mint jelly at a supermarket, which did not have any. The store's app lets you order mint jelly for $47. Jere finally found mint jelly at a competing supermarket for $3.  Last Christmas, Elyse had difficulty finding mincemeat in local stores. Mincemeat is actually chopped fruit and nuts soaked in rum or other spirits. The supermarket staff sent her to the meat counter instead.  Frank thinks that Easter candy is better than Halloween candy because he believes that Spring is better than Fall. Elyse is an October baby and prefers Fall.  This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Buy books and other merchandise autographed by Body Farm founder Dr. Bill Bass at https://bonezones.com/ including Body Farm t-shirts. Contact BoneZones to hire Frank to give a presentation about Dr. Bass and the Body Farm.  Elyse writes books about a fictional nine-year-old detective named Missy Barrett, who lives in Sevier County. Elyse created International Missy Barrett Day: A Day To Do Good Deeds and the Missy Barrett Stamp and Sticker Search in Sevier County.  In The Case of the Missing Muskets, Missy visits her Grandpa's farm and falls into a hole that turns out to be a Civil War hiding place. She discovers blankets, coins and ammunition but no muskets.  Elyse writes each weekday for four hours or 1500 words, whichever comes first. Her progress can get slowed by the research she needs to do to find the necessary details for the story.  Elyse has a blog called Idiomation which can be found at https://idiomation.wordpress.com/ It was cited in Uncle John's Bathroom Reader and several other books. She started the blog to help her son, who is autistic, to understand figures of speech more easily.  The idiom “water off a duck's back” makes Frank think of the ducklings his parents gave to him and his sisters for Easter one year.  Frank wants to see the total solar eclipse on Monday. He thinks a partial eclipse is not as good as 100%. Knoxville will see only 88% totality.  Elyse invited Frank to read his chapter during the book launch for The Case of the Missing Muskets on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at 3:30 p.m. at the King Family Public Library, 408 High Street, Sevierville, TN.  Learn more at https://www.facebook.com/MissyBarrettFanPage  Support the Frank & Friends Show by purchasing some of our high-quality merchandise at https://frank-friends-show.creator-spring.com  Sign up for a 30-day trial of Audible Premium Plus and get a free premium selection that's yours to keep. Welcome to the podcast! Today I’m very excited to be joined by Katie Ortlip, RN LCSW & Jahnna Beecham, authors of the book “Living with Dying:  A Complete Guide for Caregivers.”   At this moment in the U.S., nearly 10 million people over the age of 50 are caregivers for a parent or loved one. They are often overwhelmed trying to handle health emergencies, confusing legal matters, and prepare for the worst, while trying to live their own lives.   Given there wasn’t a guidebook for death, Katie always wanted to write a sort of “Death for Dummies,” because it was sorely needed by her patients and their families. Being a writer, Jahnna said, “Let’s do it together.” It was at this time that Jahnna’s 90-year-old father was told his long-dormant prostate cancer had spread to his bones. She became his caregiver; Katie became his hospice social worker; and their writing journey began.  Katie Ortlip is a Hospice Expert on SHARECARE, Dr. Ahmet Oz’s online health and wellness platform that provides consumers with expert information to help them lead healthier lives. She is also the co-author of Spiritual Tools for the Dying, a booklet distributed by Asante Health Care of Oregon to patients on hospice.   She received her nursing degree from Santa Barbara City College in 1982 and then spent three years working in neonatology at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in New York City and Mary Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hospital in Hanover, New Hampshire.   Jahnna Beecham most recently edited National Geographic’s Science Encyclopedia, which was released in the fall of 2016; and was a contributing editor for National Geographic’s The Ultimate Explorer Field Guide: Birds.   For the past 15 years she has been a contributing writer and editor for Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader—both the adult books and For Kids Only. Under the pen name Jahnna N. Malcolm, Jahnna Beecham and Malcolm Hillgartner have written more than 130 books for juveniles and young adults for Scholastic, Simon & Schuster, Random House, HarperCollins, Bantam and others.  Full show notes available at lourdesviado.com/womenindepth

Welcome to Episode 28 of Products of the Mind. On this episode, I speak with lover of facts and all things interesting Gordon Javna from Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader. It’s story time today with “Uncle John” of Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader. The Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader books have been helping people cure boredom during those (hopefully not too tough) times in the bathroom since 1987. Filled with short stories, facts, and interesting articles, the Bathroom Readers are family appropriate and suitable for nearly all readers. But where do these facts and stories come from? In fact, where did this idea for a bathroom reader come from? In this episode, Gordon explains the history of the Bathroom Reader (including who the heck is “Uncle John”). An entrepreneur in his own right, Gordon discusses his many ventures before taking over the Bathroom Reader, including careers in music, real estate, and the craft beer business. We’ll get insights on naming the book, developing the style and concept, and dealing with publishers. With over 15 million books in print, the Bathroom Reader is clearly doing something right; listen in to find out how Uncle John and the Bathroom Reader keep things fresh with new ideas and interesting stories. Also, Gordon shares a few sneak peeks from upcoming editions. Don’t miss out!
