Welcome to this week's Modern Drummer Podcast with Billy Amendola and his guest Josh Freese. If you're not familiar with his enormous body of work, please look up his discography, and it'll make your head spin. Since a very young age, Josh has been a touring musician, a first-call studio musician, a singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist, and a band member as both a leader and hired gun. He recently finished up touring and doing dates with Devo and The Offspring, in between playing on hit albums and songs, and he's getting ready as we speak to head out back on the road with Sting. He is a member of the Vandals (since 1989) and Devo (since 1996), he played drums for Guns N' Roses from 1997 to 2000, A Perfect Circle from 1999 to 2012, Nine Inch Nails from 2005 to 2008, Weezer from 2009 to 2011, and recorded over 400 records. In December 2010, Freese toured with Paramore on their South American tour. In fall 2016, he returned to playing full-time with Sting, whom he toured and recorded within 2005. In 2021, he toured with The Offspring. It's mind-boggling. Let's listen in and discover or be reminded why Josh is one of the greats. Enjoy!

Welcome to episode 92 of Activist #MMT. Today's part two of my two-part conversation with Fadhel Kaboub about his personal story. Fadhel is an economics professor at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, and the president of the Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity, an interdisciplinary public policy think tank. The focus of his academic work is how the lens of MMT can inform developing nations. I've written a post filled with links to Fadhel's papers, posts, and appearances, a link to which you can find in the show notes. In part one, we discussed Fadhel's personal story, from childhood through parenthood. Today in part two, Fadhel finishes his story about being parent of three little boys and how music is part of how he raises them. We then turn to his own eclectic taste in music, ranging from Metallica and Guns N' Roses to Tunisian hip-hop. We especially focus on Bob Marley. In the second half of today's episode, we return to academic topics, primarily discussing how Fadhel's work on developing nations relates to the work of John Harvey on exchange rate determination. We end on the topic of the 2011 Tunisian uprising, as discussed in the recent New York Times article in which Fadhel is extensively quoted. Now, let's get right back to my conversation with Fadhel Kaboub.

In today's episode Shannon is joined by Anna Grace once again to take you on another rollercoaster of fuckery. We update you on Shannon's dating life and the social media whoopsie she had over the weekend. The girls offer high praise to a Probably a Podcast listener who is out here absolutely grinding to be a match maker for Shannon in an unlikely turn of events. The girls discuss Anna Grace's Patreon launch and explain exactly why it will change your life to be a part of. They dive into how to have boundaries in friendships and relationships and not allowing someone else to write your story. Per usual Shannon will buy anything and forces AG into a medical fasting journey that absolutely nobody asked for... ever. Did AG find herself wedged between a game of Russian roulette, a lion tattoo, and a handle of vodka? Find out all of this and more in Episode 7. "Are you ready to party????"
It's been a crazy several months here at Curzio Research. (If you haven't heard, our will soon be trading here in the U.S. on the tZERO platform.) My wife and I decided to get away for the weekend... And inflation is everywhere… from the cost of food and drink… to hotels and parking (which we found out at a Guns N' Roses concert). [00:30] If that wasn't bad enough, the casino's jackpot sizes were tiny. The casino we visited is on Native American land. I share some wild stats on how Native American casinos are regulated... and what makes them different from other casinos. [12:05] Next, I explain why FedEx is warning about the rising costs of raw material and labor… and why we need to be prepared for a lot more companies to do the same. [18:00] A listener gives me a pat on the back for my COVID coverage and shares his experience with the virus. I share some data on why some folks are willing to get the vaccine... while others are still reluctant. Plus, I reiterate why it should be a personal choice to make. [27:10] Carbon Streaming Corporation just announced a reverse stock split. I'm an investor in this company, and a listener wants to know if I'm concerned. In short, no. I explain why management is taking this action... and why it's great for investors. [30:17] Enjoyed this episode? Ah 1988, the year in which Guns N' Roses and Rick Astley were dueling for the top single, Alf was still a thing, and horror was heading for an early 90s cliff. Who won horror in 1988? Who achieved sinister excellence? Listen as we try to figure out who had the best year in the genre 2 years before the decade's end.
Guns N' Roses emerged from the thicket of the hair metal jungle on Hollywood's Sunset Strip in the mid-80s and single-handedly reinvented rock and roll with righteous riffs and a real and present element of danger. The band became notorious as members dabbled with drugs, booze and other forms of debauchery. Thanks to arena-ready anthems that enraptured teens and enraged parents, Guns N' Roses, led by vocalist Axl Rose, quickly rose up in the charts. But, as the band's music was climbing, their relationship was crumbling. Hear the true story of this band of rock and roll outlaws. If you're going to a game (or simply have friends who are football fans), from the NFL to college, here's what you need to know. LAMBEAU LEAP The Lambeau Leap, which started as a spontaneous jump into the crowd by former Green Bay Packers (NFL – National Football League) player Leroy Butler in 1993, has turned into a tradition at Lambeau Field, home of the Packers. Minus during COVID, the scoring player jumps up the wall and into the crowd after almost every touchdown. SMILE AND WAVE Iowa Hawkeye fans have started a tradition, the Iowa Wave. When the first quarter ends, fans wave to the patients at Iowa's Stead Family Children's Hospital that overlooks the stadium. 12 The Seattle Seahawks (NFL) have long given love to the 12th man (or woman), the fans, who are loud and provide the Seahawks with serious home field advantage. But they're not the only football team to give love to the 12s. At Texas A&M, the 12th man student section stands the entire game in support of their team. Texas A&M trademarked "12th man," and the Seahawks made a deal to pay the university $140,000 to use the limited rights of the phrase for five years. TP + TREES Remember when toilet papering a house was something you did to your worse enemy? Not at Auburn University. After a win, fans toilet paper the oaks on Toomer's Corner on campus. This tradition, which started in 1972, was stopped for three years after an Alabama fan poisoned the trees, but now it's back. No word if poor college students clean the toilet paper up afterward to stock their bathrooms, especially after COVID. SEISMIC SANDMAN As you might expect, a bone-chilling tradition that creates seismic activity starts with Metallica. The Virginia Tech football team takes the field to "Enter Sandman," and the noise from the fans registers as seismic activity. The team considered songs from Guns N' Roses and Alan Parsons Project before settling on Metallica. On September 17, 1991 Guns N' Roses released their long awaited follow up to "Appetite for Destruction" with not one album but two! The first of those albums, called "Use Your Illusion I", offered a change in sound and style to fans in the early 90's. Was it an inspired breakthrough with some of the biggest hits of the early 90's? Was is a bloated train wreck? Was it both? Welcome to another episode of Scott's Thoughts! Today we'll be talking about an AWESOME upcoming guest that we have booked, some follow-up conversation about Afghanistan, and my thoughts post-recall election in California. 1:03 - As many of you know I'm a HUGE Guns N' Roses fan, and there is a great podcast out there called “The First 50 Gigs.” It can only be found on Patreon and I highly recommend listening to it, as I have. I also reached out to the creator who is often referred to as ‘The 6th Member of Guns N' Roses' and long story short, we'll be talking to him on the Podcast shortly! Stay tuned! 6:30 - I wanted to talk a little bit about the ‘Pineapple Express' group that was working in Afghanistan. It's a group of ex-military members that banded together to create a special forces team in Afghanistan that worked ‘outside the wire' to rescue people. The Atlantic has a fantastic story about the whole situation that many people may not know about. As of right now, we don't know much. From what we do know right now, though, is that it seems like it might be setting a dangerous precedent for what the government is able to do without letting us know they're actually doing it. I think the implications can be felt at home with our own laws and regulations sooner than later. 13:28 - Everybody pretty much has their mindset on what's going on with the coronavirus situation, we've all read the numbers, and we are all concerned about what we're going to be concerned about. You can be banned from one group and welcomed into others depending on your thoughts, and it just keeps progressing. I wanted to give another shout-out to The Atlantic for their great read about the numbers of Coronavirus, and regardless of their politics, I agree with what this article has to say. People don't seem to care about the numbers anymore. 29:21 - My big rant of the night is of course about the recent Recall Election in California. My biggest issue is that the entire campaign was based on more of a National story instead of, you know, California. I think there's a dangerous trend of local events becoming national events and the influence of the nation plays too much of a role in everything. Part of the magic of the United States is that there is probably a state that aligns with your politics, and ultimately you should probably live there. These days, it seems like everybody wants to spew their way of life, whether it be left or right, all over the nation without respecting where they are targeting. A prime example of this is the Texas Abortion Law, and I go into detail about my thoughts about that. In short, it's Texas's problem and Texans have a choice as to whether or not they want to embrace it. Reminder: Everything I talk about here at On The Edge Podcast is my opinion and while I use the most reliable sources for my information as I can find, I highly encourage you to look up the information on your own and draw your own conclusions. It's the return of the Classic Album Clash, and this time it's a battle between Guns N' Roses “Use Your Illusion I” and “Use Your Illusion II”! AEW's Frankie Kazarian is back along with Jojo Feeney from the Keepin' It 100 podcast to debate the two albums under some slightly different rules! There are adjustments to the track listings, and each debater creates a final “Super Illusion” album at the end choosing 14 songs from both albums to make one super version! There's the usual discussion about artwork, songwriting, and performances coupled with GNR trivia, concert tales, stories about the band members, and thoughts on Steven Adler and Izzy Stradlin. And you can weigh in on twitter @TalkIsJericho!
Guns N' Roses appeared out of the Hollywood gutter sometime in 1987 releasing an album for the ages, "Appetite for Destruction". As that album steadily rose in popularity to become one of the best selling albums of all time, the world waited for their follow up album. We got two albums, with an amazing 30 tracks, in the Fall of 1991. Before we go track by track through those impactful albums we will discuss the craziness that happened between 1988 and 1991. The stories are amazing, chaotic and pure G'n'R! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
