This week we dive into one of rock's most hysterical and revealing cultural flashpoints: the Satanic Panic. From Robert Johnson crossroads mythology and Screamin' Jay Hawkins to Black Sabbath, KISS, Iron Maiden, Ozzy, Slayer, and beyond, we trace how devil imagery, shock rock, media fearmongering, church protests, and moral crusades helped turn hard rock and metal into public enemy number one. We get into the Peters Brothers and the anti-rock movement, KISS concert protests, the PMRC hearing, the Filthy Fifteen, Richard Ramirez and AC/DC, the Judas Priest backmasking trial, Norwegian black metal church burnings, and the later scapegoating of Marilyn Manson after Columbine. We also follow the thread into more modern acts like Ghost, The Pretty Reckless, and Twin Temple, showing how Satanic imagery evolved from public scandal into branding, theater, provocation, and pop culture tradition. If you've ever wondered how rock music became the target of preachers, parents, politicians, and nightly news panic, this is the episode for you. What are your memories of Satanic Panic and what impact do you think it had? Let us know in the comments.  We hope you enjoy Episode 666 - Satanic Panic. Aujourd'hui, focus sur "I Put a Spell on You".

Screamin' Jay Hawkins released “I Put a Spell on You” in 1956 on Okeh Records. Elvis Presley released “Heartbreak Hotel” and “Hound Dog,” transforming popular music—and youth culture—almost overnight. The song that would define him was never meant to be a novelty. Hawkins later claimed he recorded it while blackout drunk, so intoxicated that he remembered nothing of the session. The record failed on its initial release, but when it caught on years later, it transformed Hawkins from a struggling musician into a cult figure. “I Put a Spell on You” has been covered countless times and featured in films released decades after its debut. The artists and movies mentioned in this story are real. The song's cultural afterlife is long, strange, and very well documented. But were Hawkins's voodoo trappings merely theatrics, or was there something more sinister behind them? Of course it was all for show—almost certainly. Still, the idea that it might not have been was enough to send several fictional possibilities leaping out of the coffin that is this author's brain. I hope you enjoy “I Put a Spell on You.” Written and performed by Scott Sigler Production Assistance by Allie Press Copyright 2026 by Empty Set Entertainment  Theme music is the song “Dark Wave” by Roman Rumyantsev With Valentine's Day just around the corner, why not surprise your sweetheart with a new 3-year domain registration? I Put a Spell On You”.

Love & Death, Hit ‘em up, Gothic style. Oh the pain, heartache only god can fix for the non-believers, so put your faith in the lord or at least Sinéad O'Connor. The divine has come down to make the sick righteous, but we know what happens to lottery winners. Where we live, we embrace the diablo fiddles and firewater freaks. The only light comes from fire. New music from Viv & Riley, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Hurray For The Riff Raff, Arianne Lenker- also featuring Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Ma'aM, Violent Femmes, Mekons, The Chieftains, Mick Jagger, Sinéad O'Connor and loads more. This mixtape was inspired by the art of Sandra McCutcheon Pape. Eszter is an actor/musician, gaining initial fame starring in Jim Jarmusch's first major film Stranger Than Paradise (1984). She has released four albums of often autobiographical songs since 1998. We discuss "The First Day" (and end by listening to "Freaks") from I Hate Memory (2022) feat. Stew and Syd Straw; this album has been made into a stage show. We then turn to "Exit at 63" from Airless Midnight (2015) and "Almost Gone" from Flicker (1998). The introduction is the theme from her debut film, Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell on You."
