In one of my last episodes, I profiled Israel Keyes, a serial killer who moved to Anchorage in 2007.  Many serial-killer experts consider Keyes to be one of the most intelligent, organized serial killers of all time.  He randomly chose victims who lived thousands of miles from his home, and he stashed murder kits around the country, planning to access them at some future date.  It is easy to understand why Israel Keyes wasn't captured sooner than he was.  He methodically planned his crimes and always had an exit strategy.  He only began making mistakes when his murderous impulses grew too strong for him to control, and these mistakes led to his apprehension. Around the same time Israel Keyes was active, another serial killer stalked the residents of Anchorage, but the story of Joshua Wade and his crimes is far different than that of Israel Keyes.  Investigators consider Wade intelligent, but he did not stalk his victims or plan his crimes.  His crimes were sloppy, happened on the spur of the moment, and usually were the result of him losing his temper. Amy is joined by historian Jill Burke to discuss her book, How to Be a Renaissance Woman: The Untold History of Beauty and Female Creativity, exploring cosmetics and beauty expectations of 15th-century Europe, and how the beauty industry continues to shape our culture today.Jill Burke is a professor of Renaissance Visual and Material Cultures at the University of Edinburgh, a historian of the body and its visual representation, focusing on Italy and Europe from 1400-1700. She is currently the lead investigator of the Royal Society funded project 'Renaissance Goo,' working with soft-matter scientists to remake Renaissance cosmetic and skincare recipes. She talks regularly about Renaissance bodies on television, radio and podcasts, and she discusses the history of art and beauty on “Jill Burke's Blog.” She lives in Edinburgh.

Brian Sten Smith, a man from South Africa, is discovered as the culprit in multiple Anchorage killings a short time after becoming a US citizen. We have been obsessed with the ideal body since Renaissance artists rediscovered nudity, says art historian Jill Burke. She tells Andrew Marr how artists including Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Titian established rigid beauty standards and an obsession with the body that we still live with today. Our image of power was hugely influenced by the Elizabethan miniaturist Nicholas Hilliard. To mark his 400th anniversary, historian Elizabeth Goldring reexamines the artist who painted all the principal rulers of his day, including Queen Elizabeth and James I. Hilliard's tiny images encapsulated political power in a portrait. Elizabethan ideas of power and beauty are unpicked in Christopher Marlowe's play Edward II, the story of a king whose homosexuality brings his downfall. Tom Stuart plays the titular role at The Globe and has written a new sequel, After Edward, exploring the persecution and politicisation of homosexuals today. Playwright Martin Sherman wrote the iconic play about gay persecution, Bent, and has returned to themes of desire and persecution in his new work.
