Guitarist and songwriter Jim Fairchild joins Andy to talk about his newest release with Small Isles, Everything on Memory, music scores, famous fans, and disappointing your children. Intro music is "String Anticipation" by Cory Gray.
"Everything On Memory" The Fresno-born, Modesto-raised Jim Fairchild got his start on guitar as a teenager and in the mid-nineties became the lead guitar player for the indie rock outfit Grandaddy. That would be enough to make a resume' shimmer, but Fairchild was just getting started. He was the touring guitar player for Giant Sand, he worked with everyone from Hawaii to Dappled Cities and he took over for Johnny Marr in Modest Mouse in 2009 and played lead guitar for them until 2021. Fairchild fronted the band All Smiles, he was selected to lead a project at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2010 and started a new project called Grace Meridian in 2020. But that's not all—Fairchild currently is the Director of A&R for Dangerbird Records and he's scoring films like the documentary Common Ground and Bee The Change, which is narrated by Ellie Goulding. And we haven't even talked about Small Isles yet. Their new EP Everything On Memory has been described by Fairchild as, "written as the imagined score to a Christopher Nolan-directed movie I dreamt about in which Donald and Steven Glover wrote a script in response to Modest Mouse's "Third Planet”. To my ears, Small Isles' new release is a moody blend of spellbinding cinemascapes, arching crescendos, soaring distant melodies and futuristic percussion, all of which adds up to one of the most spellbinding releases of the year. Fairchild recently scored the documentary film Common Ground (Donald Glover, Laura Dern, Woody Harrelson, Rosario Dawson, Ian Somerhalder) which won the Tribeca Film Festival “Human/Nature” award. He is currently working on the follow up, Bee The Change narrated by Ellie Goulding, which will premiere at COP 28 (United Nations Climate Change Conference). Joel Jerome is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Los Angeles, CA. His solo debut, Super Flower Blood Moon (Dangerbird Records) hits the streets on May 13th, and promises a dark, folky trip that celebrates his 90's indie rock influences as much and it pays homage to his latin roots. In this episode Joel tells us how the pandemic opened his eyes to activism, how that's translated to his work with The Union of Musicians and Allied Workers (UMAW) and why unions are important to working musicians. We hear how his long time pal Jim Fairchild (Modest Mouse, Grandaddy, All Smiles) had a hand in the early stages of Super Flower Blood Moon and why it was different from past records. Joel also share's his view on "capturing recordings" verses "producing" and how thats applied in his own studio, Psychedelic Thriftstore. Joe plays a couple tunes from the new record and Joel tells us where's he's looking forward to touring in 2022. https://dangerbirdrecords.com/https://joeljeromemusic.bandcamp.com/https://www.izotope.com/https://us.minorfigures.com/

We had the pleasure of interviewing Jim Fairchild and Jacob Snider of Small Isles over Zoom video! The new instrumental project of guitarist Jim Fairchild (Grandaddy / Modest Mouse / All Smiles) and songwriter/composer Jacob Snider (named Best New Artist by NPR-affiliate WXPN-Philadelphia), Small Isles inhabits a rare hypnotic twilight between motion picture music and incandescent cosmic folk. At once a love letter to film soundtracks and a meditative balm for our troubled times, ‘The Valley, The Mountains, The Sea' was recorded by Fairchild on a bare-bones mobile rig while on tour with Modest Mouse, in the cracks of time between soundchecks and performances, from city to city, in darkened hotel rooms and over-lit backstage dressing rooms, giving the album a sense of intimacy, of stolen time and weary after-show solitude. Playfully conceived as an imaginary score to an imaginary film in the spirit of the 90s sleeper classic ‘The Ice Storm', the album is cinematic in a homespun way, at times recalling the innovative film music of Hildur Gudnadottir and Oneohtrix Point Never telescoped through a back porch Sigur Ros or the delicate cobwebs of barely-there slowcore Americana. A linchpin track off the album, ‘Life At One' is imprinted by Snider's chorale-like humming and an emotionally riveting video by animator Riley Thompson. In the words of Fairchild, “It's one of the first songs that we worked on together and became the spiritual center for the album. I wrote the central musical themes and once Jacob's voice entered the picture, providing the autumnal glow, the song became what it was supposed to, and pointed the way to so much more music.” About the beautifully evocative video, Fairchild had this to say, “I had this vague concept of a person facing down their mortality and then finding redemption and purpose. Where Riley took the song was beyond what I'd hoped for. It is heartbreaking in the best possible way, without becoming didactic. He is also making a chopped and screwed version of the video which will serve as a chaptered visual accompaniment for the whole album. Riley's work brought the whole album to life in a way I'd hoped for but couldn't have imagined.” Small Isles will be playing select shows later in 2021.We want to hear from you! Today (18 April) is the anniversary of the release of Figure 8. It's Elliott's fifth studio album and the last he put out before he died. It can feel, at times, feel a little underrated. But listening to it again (as well as to From a Basement on the Hill) you can't help but feel excited by where Elliott would have gone musically had he stayed with us. In this episode, we celebrate the album. We share some clips of previous guests discussing their favourite songs from Figure 8, as well as their thoughts on the album more broadly. We also give a little preview of what's to come when we launch the second season of this podcast at the end of April 2019. It features: * Greg Cortez, New Monkey Studio * Max Bloom, Yuck * Jade Bird, solo musician * Jim Fairchild, Grandaddy and Modest Mouse * Jason Lytle, Grandaddy * Ken Stringfellow, The Posies, Big Star Listen to Figure 8 on Spotify here: [https://open.spotify.com/album/7DC0pE943VR5tAKIvQXHts?si=LXmc9UJHRQyoS7e1_5J90w](https://open.spotify.com/album/7DC0pE943VR5tAKIvQXHts?si=LXmc9UJHRQyoS7e1_5J90w) My Favourite Elliott Smith Song is produced by Rob Comba and Elizabeth Withstandley. The musician Jim Fairchild joins us for our final episode of series one. Jim plays guitar in Grandaddy - alongside our former guest Jason Lytle - and Modest Mouse, and he also works as a solo artist too. It was when he was with Grandaddy that Jim first got to know Elliott Smith properly. The band joined Elliott on tour following the release of Figure 8 and they built up a friendship after that. Jim would even arrange for Elliott to come onstage to sing at the occasional Grandaddy live show and would visit him at New Monkey studio when he was trying to fix old equipment. In this episode, Jim shares some great Elliott stories, as well as going in-depth on his favourite song pick. Hope you enjoy this one. We'll be back with a new series in a few months - in the meantime, please do share the podcast with anyone you think might be interested. **Extra things to look at / listen to:** * Happiness by Elliott Smith on Spotify: [https://open.spotify.com/track/3aU2ui8JQOtmgHYH0g1qFL?si=BG4sNlz6S6yIHcYC9KAfGA](https://open.spotify.com/track/3aU2ui8JQOtmgHYH0g1qFL?si=BG4sNlz6S6yIHcYC9KAfGA) * Figure 8 by Elliott Smith on Spotify: [https://open.spotify.com/album/7DC0pE943VR5tAKIvQXHts?si=k7gT_SU3Q6ioiKzwEqWT0g](https://open.spotify.com/album/7DC0pE943VR5tAKIvQXHts?si=k7gT_SU3Q6ioiKzwEqWT0g) * He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's the Pilot by Grandaddy on Spotify: [https://open.spotify.com/track/6v7xLYNIdtJkyCGsenzQxh?si=eNa3DE0wTE2z5yL8y15wiw](https://open.spotify.com/track/6v7xLYNIdtJkyCGsenzQxh?si=eNa3DE0wTE2z5yL8y15wiw) * Recording of Elliott playing He's Simple... with Grandaddy: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jZ0_YUXO-I](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jZ0_YUXO-I) My Favourite Elliott Smith Song is produced by Rob Comba and Elizabeth Withstandley. “I’ve always been a proponent of not making the same record twice,” Holly Miranda says. “Some people find a niche and go with that, but I need to try something different every time.” That’s more than apparent on Mutual Horse, Miranda’s third release for Dangerbird Records, out February 23rd. The album, Miranda’s fourth full-length solo release, is more than just an artistic step forward, it’s a whole new way for her to make music. “This really is the most collaborative record I’ve ever done,” she says. “It’s first time I’ve shared so much of the writing and the production, the meat and bones of making an album.” With support from a stellar circle of players – including My Brightest Diamond’s Shara Nova, TV On The Radio’s Kyp Malone, Grandaddy/Modest Mouse’s Jim Fairchild and Built To Spill’s Matthew Morgan amongst others – it’s Miranda’s astonishing singing vocal that is set free, elevating this collection of songs as no one else could. An instrument which can shift from a barely-there whisper to a soaring wail that cracks open the sky, Holly’s voice is startling from the moment it emerges on Mutual Horse. This record finds Holly bridging the gap between 2010’s experimental synth laden release The Magician’s Private Library and 2015’s stripped-back, soulful self-titled record. Miranda takes an honest and intimate approach, while maintaining her sense of humor amidst sonic explorations. The tracks run the gamut from the sultry, driving “On the Radio,” to a cover of Crazy Horse’s “When Your Lonely Heart Breaks,” and the delicate “Sing Like,” inspired by Miranda’s mother; an intimate clip of her singing while pregnant with Holly follows the song. www.hollymiranda.com getthefunkoutshow.kuci.org
