WARNING: EXTREMELY SENSITIVE CONTENT Ken Stringfellow was a founding member of the Posies, who enjoyed a long career as one of the best power pop bands of the 90s and beyond. He also held down recurring gigs with REM, Big Star, Giant Sand and many others as well as a solo career. In 2021 this was all upended when three women accused him of sexual assault. Since then almost all of his musical partners have distanced themselves from him and he's had to (almost) start over from scratch. This year he released his first album since his world imploded called Circuit Breaker which is about as primal a creative response to this as you'll ever hear. Ken joins us this week to tell his side of the story. It's a tricky subject that we chose to approach journalistically and neutrally. We apologize in advance if anyone is triggered by this conversation as that was not our intention.  www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod  www.rainn.org/resources www.kenstringfellow.com

Formed in 2004 The Old Ceremony has survived longer than many marriages. They've reinvented themselves again and again, beginning as an eleven-piece mini-orchestra, slimming down to a five-piece touring machine (guitar, bass, drums, vibraphone/keys, violin), and now –  in their 20th year together – creating a fresh, energized record that incorporates the visceral (“Valerie Solanas”), the meditative (“North American Grain”), the philosophical (“Too Big To Fail”), and a nod back to their noir-ish beginnings (“Lonely Mayor”). Songwriter and vocalist/guitarist Django Haskins' gift for incisive, colorful lyrics and melodies is on full display throughout, whether it be an unhinged first-person tale of shooting Andy Warhol or the melancholy last act of a long-closeted politician. He writes with empathy and precision that occasionally calls to mind the source of the band's name, Leonard Cohen, among others. In fact, the songs contained in Earthbound are culled from the 115 new songs Haskins penned during the pandemic. When tossed into the well-seasoned cauldron of the band's collective musical voices, they transform from one person's songs into something else: the sound of a band that has created together for two decades, through highs and lows, busy years of touring and slow years of child-rearing and mask wearing.  The Old Ceremony has seen their share of highlights: sharing bills with the Jayhawks, CAKE, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Mountain Goats, Chuck Berry, Giant Sand, and many more; touring the U.S., Canada, and Europe; building their stature in the fertile Chapel Hill/Durham scene one cinematic performance at a time. Meanwhile band leader Django Haskins in addition to participating in the Big Star tribute tours, co-wrote and recorded an album of Folk-Rock originals with the Jayhawks' Gary Louris under the name “Au Pair.” Earthbound is destined to be another highlight to add to the list, a musical recommitment ceremony among five musicians who share a life in song.       The Old Ceremony's info  www.theoldceremony.com www.facebook.com/theoldceremony www.instagram.com/theoldceremonyofficial https://open.spotify.com/artist/21PmWnK0ROD7G4nGvYCmDj

"Everything On Memory" The Fresno-born, Modesto-raised Jim Fairchild got his start on guitar as a teenager and in the mid-nineties became the lead guitar player for the indie rock outfit Grandaddy. That would be enough to make a resume' shimmer, but Fairchild was just getting started. He was the touring guitar player for Giant Sand, he worked with everyone from Hawaii to Dappled Cities and he took over for Johnny Marr in Modest Mouse in 2009 and played lead guitar for them until 2021. Fairchild fronted the band All Smiles, he was selected to lead a project at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2010 and started a new project called Grace Meridian in 2020. But that's not all—Fairchild currently is the Director of A&R for Dangerbird Records and he's scoring films like the documentary Common Ground and Bee The Change, which is narrated by Ellie Goulding. And we haven't even talked about Small Isles yet. Their new EP Everything On Memory has been described by Fairchild as, "written as the imagined score to a Christopher Nolan-directed movie I dreamt about in which Donald and Steven Glover wrote a script in response to Modest Mouse's "Third Planet”. To my ears, Small Isles' new release is a moody blend of spellbinding cinemascapes, arching crescendos, soaring distant melodies and futuristic percussion, all of which adds up to one of the most spellbinding releases of the year. Fairchild recently scored the documentary film Common Ground (Donald Glover, Laura Dern, Woody Harrelson, Rosario Dawson, Ian Somerhalder) which won the Tribeca Film Festival “Human/Nature” award. He is currently working on the follow up, Bee The Change narrated by Ellie Goulding, which will premiere at COP 28 (United Nations Climate Change Conference). Sange som "Symptom of My Time", først og fremmest, "Save a Little Love", "Worth it" (2001) og "Under the Water" i et remix blev spillet igen og igen. Albummene "Where the Wind Turns the Skin to Leather" og "Kontinua", Franks første dansksprogede album, er ganske udmærkede danske americana-album.

Su nuevo álbum, ‘Tucson’, está grabado y producido por Craig Schumacher (Calexico, M. Growing up in the melting pot of Tucson primed guitarist and singer Brian Lopez for absorbing the cultural music of other countries. Graduating from college with a background in classical guitar, Brian made a name for himself in the band Mostly Bears before striking out as both a solo artist and an acclaimed sideman. With his band Xixa, Brian has channeled his many influences into the new album "Genesis", a collection of songs that reflect the concerns of our Covid-rattled world. Pour yourself a big mug of chicha and kick back as Nick and Brian talk about touring in Europe, how an artist's political slant informs their art, and the rise of today's Seinfeld hipsters. HIGHLIGHTS: [01:09] Brian describes his new band, Xixa, and how they got started as a Peruvian chicha cover band [05:09] Xixa recorded their new album "Genesis" as a group, before the pandemic lockdown [06:33] The song "Land Where We Lie" was a blatant mix of South American cumbia music and 80s New Wave vibes [07:10] Brian explores the various themes touched on by the songs, and how the album's title has multiple meanings [09:55] Brian explains that not touring and being home has given him a deeper love of the craft of songwriting [11:34] Brian is a multi-instrumentalist with a classical guitar background, but he loves piano [13:03] Brian's band Mostly Bears survived their tours thanks to Wal-Mart's deli meats [16:09] Howe Gelb of Giant Sand became a mentor and "path finder" for Brian's career [17:43] Brian tries to find a balance between collaborations and his own personal projects [20:14] Brian appreciates the break from the business side of music that being a sideman provides [21:35] Brian has toured more overseas than here in the US because there were more opportunities [23:20] Xixa and "Genesis" are becoming very popular in South America, prompting a possible tour [24:14] Brian and Nick rave about the beauty and art culture of Mexico City [26:03] Brian participated in the Kennedy Center "Arts Across America" program during the lockdown [28:58] Brian feels more politically activated these days, and it's reflected in his art at times [29:58] Brian's musical influences range from pop of The Beatles to the thrash of Nirvana [32:10] It's official: the early 90s are back in fashion, both musically and stylistically [33:19] Brian can't stand the way the term "psychedelic" is applied so broadly to various styles of music [36:03] Brian loves being immersed in the blended cultures that make up the Tucson experience [38:13] Maintaining a studio during the pandemic has been tricky [39:37] Brian's opinions on certain artists have changed over time, as he comes to appreciate their art   Thanks for listening! Hope you're enjoying the new season of Aquarium Drunkard's Transmissions. Here's a good one from the archives, a favorite of Timothy Showalter of Strand of Oaks a roundtable talk with three lifers: Howe Gelb, Robyn Hitchcock, and Steve Wynn. The three share similar paths through scenes and the industry, their paths are shared but divergent, and there’s a spiritual unity at work even in their differences. With his band Giant Sand, Howe Gelb pens strange, dusty songs about love and the desert. Both solo and with his Paisley Underground pioneering band the Dream Syndicate, Wynn composes driving minimalist rock sagas (a recent 11-disc boxset documents much of his range) . And after emerging from the UK punk scene with the Soft Boys, Robyn Hitchcock has embarked on a career full of wry and funny songs that skewer pop conventions. We spoke in August of 2018 when they performed at HOCO Fest in Tucson, Arizona, a place where they all share considerable history. This interview was recorded at the KXCI studio at the historic Hotel Congress. Please enjoy this one from the vault.

Solving Podcasting's Linear Listening Problem [S3E12]

Podcast Pontifications

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 27, 2020 9:30

Thanks to an episode of Giant Sand (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_Sand). After making a list of all the people I wanted to yell out for not introducing me to this band when I first arrived in Arizona back in 1997, I was struck by the difference in how music is presented to new listeners in 2020 versus how podcast episodes are presented to the uninitiated. Rather than presenting me with the most recent track released by the band or making me wade through a list of the ~30lbums they’ve released, the app made it very easy to listen to the very best -- most popular -- tracks from that band. And I loved that.  On the home screen of most podcast apps, they do present podcasts based on popularity. But that’s the entire podcast. Which episode should a person brand new to that podcast start with? And which episode after that? Imagine a podcast app working more like the music streaming apps. Someone tells you of a new show and you search for that show by name on your listening app. This imaginary helpful app then presents to you the very best episodes of that show for you to listen to first, allowing you to quickly confirm the recommendation given was right for you. That’s a very different world than we live in today, podcasters. No, this is not going to work for all types of podcasts. Time-sensitive episodes that cover “the news” or current events like Valence (https://hughouse.productions/valence/) must be presented in order from the first episode. But this concept is perfect for timeless, evergreen podcast content, Shows like The Snooze Button (https://thesnoozebutton.com/) each have favorite or stand-out episodes. For those shows and the vast swath of the podosphere that is also timeless content the forced adherence to linear episode consumption in apps runs counter to what music app developers have figured out. As I've previously (https://podcastpontifications.com/episode/better-podcasting-by-living-up-to-the-hype) on this show, the most recent episode of your podcast isn't necessarily the best episode of your podcast. Yet it’s the one that the apps present to new listeners and would-be subscribers first. See the disconnect? If you’re thinking of just using download data to determine popularity, there’s a problem. Podcast episode downloads often (usually?) happen automatically, which is why you see a spike in downloads the day your release an episode. Having episodes automatically appear in podcast listening apps or other distribution channels is one of the magic powers of podcasting, and that magic adds noise to our data.  Podcast hosting companies could give us better data, helping identify when an episodes bucks the trend. They could also better report on repeat listening, connections between episodes downloaded by the same unique user, and other insightful data that could help us build truly timeless episodes our listeners want to listen to over and over again. Podcast apps have actual-play data, giving them great insight into actual listening behavior that could help present the best timeless episode to a brand new listener Maybe, as we approach the third decade of podcasting, the value of repeat plays and the interconnectivity between episodes will be realized. I’d actually bet money on that, as the much-more-data-savvy app makers now listing podcasts in their apps will force that change.  They’ve solved the problem for music. They’ll solve it for podcasting too.  ----- Read the full article and share with a friend: https://podcastpontifications.com/episode/solving-podcastings-linear-listening-problem (https://podcastpontifications.com/episode/solving-podcastings-linear-listening-problem) Podcast Pontifications (https://podcastpontifications.com/) is published by Evo Terra four times a week and is designed to make podcasting better, not just easier. John Parish in conversation with David Eastaugh Parish is best known for his work with singer-songwriter PJ Harvey. He has also worked with many other bands including Eels, Tracy Chapman, Giant Sand, and Sparklehorse.  His first record release was a single "Mind Made" by the British new wave band, Thieves Like Us (1980). In 1982, he formed the band Automatic Dlamini, with Rob Ellis. The changing line-up of Automatic Dlamini included Polly Harvey from 1988 until 1991. Automatic Dlamini recorded three albums: The D is For Drum (1987),Here Catch Shouted his Father (1990 – unreleased but available as a bootleg), and From A Diva to a Diver(1992). By the time From A Diva to a Diver was released, Harvey had left to form the PJ Harvey trio with ex-Dlamini members Rob Ellis and Ian Olliver, and Parish was playing guitar with Marc Moreland's band The Ensenada Joyride. In 1986 Parish had begun a parallel career as a record producer working with UK bands including The Chesterfields, The Brilliant Corners, The Caretaker Race and The Becketts. In 1995 he co-produced PJ Harvey's "To Bring You My Love", on which he also played guitar, drums, percussion and organ. He co-wrote and produced The Eels album Souljacker (2001), and played guitar on the world tour that accompanied its release. He has produced and/or played on a number of Howe Gelb / Giant Sand albums and frequently appears onstage with them. Parish produced the Giant Sandalbum Chore of Enchantment (2000), and a photograph of his wedding in Tucson in 1998 was used as the cover for the 2011 re-release of the record. He also began working as a film composer in 1998, writing the score for Belgian director Patrice Toye's debut film, Rosie. Parish's score won the Jury Special Appreciation prize at the 1999 Bonn Film & TV Music Biennale. He has since scored other films and a Dutch seven-part TV drama Waltz(2006). Parish has now worked on seven albums with Harvey, including two co-written albums: Dance Hall at Louse Point (1996) and A Woman A Man Walked By (2009). He played in the PJ Harvey touring band (guitar/drums/keyboards) from 1994 – 1999, from 2009 – 2012 and from 2015 - 2017. He co-produced and played on To Bring You My Love (1995),White Chalk (2007), the Mercury Prize winning Let England Shake (2011) and The Hope Six Demolition Project (2016).

We’re back. The weather is beginning to turn. We’re almost there. Welcome to the September edition of the Transmissions podcast. On this episode, we sit down with three legends of independent music: psychedelic singer/songwriter Robyn Hitchcock, Giant Sand leader Howe Gelb, and Steve Wynn of the Dream Syndicate. Since emerging in the ‘80s, they’ve amassed incredible catalogs, and they’re all still making vital and poetic records. We spoke earlier this month at HOCO Fest, a multi-day festival in Tucson, Arizona. Sitting down at the KXCI studio at Hotel Congress, the three riffed on their years making music, how their sounds have evolved over the years, and what a lifelong commitment to making art looks like. But first, our conversation with Matt Sullivan of Light in the Attic Records, one of our longtime favorite reissue labels. We spoke live at Gold Diggers in East Hollywood as part of our Talk Show series – a set of live conversations centered around the worlds of music, art, film and beyond. LITA has released records by Rodriguez, Betty Davis, Lee Hazlewood, Jim Sullivan, Serge Gainsbourg, and has launched expansive archives like the Native North America and Japan Archival projects. How did Light in the Attic get started? Live on stage at Gold Diggers, Sullivan explained it all.

Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

My guest this week is the very creative and grooving drummer, John Convertino. Along with Joey Burns, John started Calexico in the mid-90's after a long stint playing and touring with the seminal group, Giant Sand. His work with Howe Gelb in Giant Sand brought him from LA to Tucson, where he's been living for many years, and has helped to develop a creative and nurturing music scene. Calexico has released a series of amazing albums, and John's unique approach to the drums is always a highlight. The group successfully mixes folk, rock, twang, mariachi, and avant-garde music into their sound, and it was great to discuss all of those elements with John, as well as his history playing in his family band, how he met Howe Gelb and started playing in LA, his move to the desert of Tucson, and his experiences recording and working in the studio. Enjoy my conversation with John Convertino!

Richard concludes the story of his disastrous romantic break with his wife and gives away an exclusive RHLSTP mug to one of the RHLSTP mugs. His guest is Britain's premiere John Peel/Oliver Hardy/Stewart Lee impressionist, Robin Ince. They discuss the autobiographies of Don Estelle and Syd Little, how Robin created The Office, a swearing Su Pollard, Iain Lee on a pink tricycle, the funniest serial killer and being the Giant Sand of comedy. Richard also quizzes about his decision to (at least temporarily) give up stand-up. It would be a shame. He's very funny. Having said that, he does seem to be in a very happy mood so why ruin that? A protože Bob Wayne nebyl zdaleka prvním country umělcem, který sáhl do rockových zpěvníků, přidáme pár často docela raritních nahrávek z podobného soudku. Těšit se můžete na Johnnyho Cashe, Dwighta Yoakama, Dierkse Bentleyho, Giant Sand, Rodneyho Crowella, Allison Moorer, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band a Dolly Parton.

Calexico is the seminal desert noir band. Their music is a melting pot where traditional Latin and southwestern elements of mariachi, conjunto, cumbia and Tejano styles peacefully and harmoniously coexist with alt-country, indie rock and a trace of jazz. Founded in 1996 by singer Joey Burns and drummer John Convertino at the University of California - Irvine when the pair met while Convertino was playing in the group Giant Sand, Calexico started as a side project and grew to its current six members and an identity all its own. John will join us from his home in Tuscon, Arizona and we'll talk about the process behind recording the soundtrack for Circo - a documentary about a century-old Mexican circus.
