During my recent conversation with Niko Stratis about her new book, The Dad Rock That Made Me a Woman, she described her affection for Jason Lytle's band Grandaddy, and I mentioned I'd interviewed Jason before. Well, this got me looking for that talk and here it is! This phoner between Jason and I took place on Tuesday December 4, 2012 at 11 AM ET and was focused on his solo album Dept. of Disappearance, and we covered other things too, including whether or not Grandaddy might ever make music or play shows again. As it happens, Grandaddy will be on tour soon!To hear this entire conversation, subscribe to Kreative Kontrol on Patreon at the $6 tier or higher (a reminder that an annual subscription includes a discount compared to a monthly one).Related episodes/links:Ep. #974: Niko StratisEp. #924: Lance Bangs and Bob Nastanovich on ‘Pavements'Ep. #803: The Replacements' ‘Tim: Let it Bleed Edition' with Bob Mehr, Jason Jones & Ed StasiumEp. #717: No AgeEp. #704: Sam Prekop and John McEntireEp. #694: David CrossSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/kreative-kontrol. Welcome to the show Jason Lytle from Grandaddy who even though isnt a horror fanatic has chosen a film with one of the most horrific scenes in it ever filmed, to my mind. Ted Kotcheff's Wake In Fright. Australia is huge, you can get lost, both physically and mentally.Grandaddy Jason Lytle

Seja talks to her guest Jason Lytle (Grandaddy) about growing up Modesto, moving to LA on his own terms, home recording and weird shows in Germany. Jason tells Seja about the last tour he did of Australia, his thoughts on continuing to use the name Grandaddy, and wanting to honour one's own influences without compromise. They chat about imposter syndrome, their love of Jeff Lynne, synths and how to keep songs interesting. Jason's strange show story was illustrated by friend of the podcast Spod. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of songwriting visionaries who came to prominence in the 1990s with well respected indie bands, and who both have vital new music out now: Jason Lytle and Gruff Rhys. Lytle started making music under the name Grandaddy back in 1992. He was pro skateboarder who found a second passion in home recording, and as you'll hear in this chat, kind of stumbled upon some guys who helped him flesh out the sound into something both humble and grand. The first run of Grandaddy albums—including Under the Western Freeway and 2000's classic The Sophtware Slump—felt a bit like quieter, more heartfelt cousins to the music the Flaming Lips were making at the time. After that initial run, the band eventually split up, only to reform sporadically over the years. Lytle also recorded some really fascinating solo records while also time—as you'll hear—to try and leave the music world behind a little bit. But he's been called back to the Grandaddy world with a brand new album called Blue WAV, and it's everything you'd expect from him brain: a mixture of sweet sadness with fuzzy guitars and synths from another age. Check out “Cabin in my Mind” from Blue WAV right here. The other half of today's conversation is Gruff Rhys, who just released his 25th album overall in a career that has spanned 35 years and taken some fascinating turns. He's still probably best known as the frontman of the colorful, psych-leaning Welsh pop band Super Furry Animals, which was signed to the venerated Creation Records label back in the 1990s, and whose records and visuals always zigged when you thought they might zag—that's a compliment. For his solo work, Rhys has been genre-expansive to say the least, but his brand new record, Sadness Sets Me Free, is refreshingly straightforward pop. As you'll hear in this chat, it was recorded pretty quickly, without a lot of fuss. It doesn't sound miles away from the new Grandaddy album, really. Check out “Bad Friend” right here. As it turns out, these two toured together a million years ago, and each has fond memories of that time—a soccer match, a special parting gift, and more. They also chat about Lytle's preference to stay away from the madness of the big city, even as he lives perilously close to it once again as well as their tendency to make up words in their songs when the ones that exist just won't do. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Gruff Rhys and Jason Lytle for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the great stuff at Talkhouse.com. Jason Lytle is the driving force behind legendary American indie rock band Grandaddy. The band was formed in 1992, and has released six studio albums to date including the critically acclaimed 'Sumday' in 2003. Grandaddy disbanded in 2006, but reunited in 2017 to release their new album 'Last Place'. Their latest album is 'Blu Wav' (2024) and we spoke with Jason about the album, the misuse of technology, how he creates songs, pedal steel guitar, making the music sound effortless, and a lot more! Mark Windt, born in Cleveland, later a resident of Holland, and now back in Ohio, performs under the name Kramies. Have you heard of him? We hadn't. But Patrick Carney of the Black Keys has. So has Jason Lytle of Grandaddy. Kramies has performed with Spiritualized, Yo La Tengo, and Calexico, and currently is on tour with Tyler Ramsey of Band Of Horses. In this episode, Bob and Nick visit with Kramies, learn about his interesting career and listen to some of his evocative dream pop. And we discuss the current weirdness of the music business, how difficult and yet simultaneously easy it is to develop an audience, and get your music heard. Note: Kramies is also a very funny fellow, and this is a particularly interesting episode! Grandaddy - "The Town Where I'm Livin Now" from the 2023 album Sunday: Excess Baggage on Dangerbird Records Long-time KEXP faves Grandaddy recently a digital-only collection of rarities and b-sides titled Sumday: Excess Baggage. With a career spanning three decades, there are a lot of gems within, including today's Song of the Day, a dreamy tribute to songwriter Jason Lytle's home in California. “I like making songs like this," he shares in a press release. "Lots of bleak but sweet visuals. Everyday stuff available for everyone to see…but some of us just end up with the twisted work of documenting it.” On the collection, he continues: “After many years of hammering away at writing and recording as Grandaddy, Sumday seems to be the center of it and where it all peaked. To the journalists we were, ‘On the verge of greatness, underrated, overlooked, unsung.' It was a tumultuous and exciting time for us for sure. Also very exhausting." “Revisiting this material and reflecting on those times has been a double edged sword. Bittersweet is an apt word, I suppose. Twenty years after the fact, I'm just grateful to be alive and kicking… celebrating that moment in time by re-releasing the original album, B sides and extras of that era, and even some raw cassette demos of the album itself a sort of sketchbook/rough draft of the LP in cassette form. So be it then. ‘On the verge of greatness, underrated, overlooked, unsung.' This is what all of that sounds like. I'll take it.” Revisit our 2020 interview with Lytle on their last full-length, 2017's Last Place, and the passing of their bassist Kevin Garcia. Episode 31 is back after being banned from all streaming platforms. New (the same) and improved (still mid) with certain sonic elements removed (as to not get sued). It's time to find out which LPs and/or 12” singles filed under the letter “G” from Jay & Deon's collections they love most, then rap about the bands behind the vinyl. GO! -- In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For the past half century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2024, idiotic, introverted one-time award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential themes of their upcoming thirty-first episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably good solid grasp of the alphabet and how it works. They had previously utilized the letters A thru F, so naturally, they went with G. The “G” mixtape: (A1) Game Theory – Erica's World (A2) Grant Green – We've Only Just Begun (A3) Grazia – Soyle Beni (A4) Goodie Mob – Cell Therapy (A5) Glitterhouse – I Lost me a Friend (B1) Gure featuring Roy Ayers – Take a Look (at Yourself) (B2) Grandaddy – Hewlitt's Daughter (B3) Marvin Gaye – Trouble Man (B4) Guadalcanal Diary – 3 AM (B5) The Goon Sax – Sweaty Hands Sonic contributors to the thirty-first episode of Lightnin' Licks Radio, the letter “G” redux, include: Prince Paul, Brothers Johnson, James Todd Smith, Arc of All and The Source of Light and Power, J. In this episode, Jason Lytle reflects on the process of making Grandaddy's second album, THE SOPHTWARE SLUMP. Jason talks about being "a man with a mission" while holing up in a farmhouse outside of their hometown of Modesto, California and tracking and mixing nearly everything himself. During this era when bands were starting to record themselves, Jason describes how he was obsessively buying gear and learning the craft of recording while being inspired to experiment after hearing Radiohead's OK COMPUTER. Since Grandaddy had signed with major label, V2, prior to the making of the record, Jason describes the pressure he felt as the band was gaining popularity and the curse of the sophomore slump lingered. From writing cautionary tales, sci-fi epics and songs about drinking and failed relationships to sending a joke version of the album to the label to sharing a stage with Elliott Smith, we'll hear the stories around how the record came together.
Drew Brown of OneRepublic shares his candid thoughts on the band Grandaddy and Jason Lytle's music. He offers an honest perspective on Grandaddy's track in the music industry, and we also talk plenty about the "mythology" of Jason's creativity. Mike King talks to Julien Faraut about THE WITCHES OF THE ORIENT. The most unbeatable team you’ve likely never heard of gets a revolutionary treatment in this stylish documentary, which breathes vital new life into the sports film. Our heroes are the Japanese women’s volleyball team, who utterly dominated the sport in the 1960s, winning the Olympic gold medal plus a whopping 258 consecutive matches along the way—a record that still stands to this day. The squad began as a workers’ team at a textile factory, with all-night practice sessions under the ruthless training of their notorious head coach. By the end of their run, they were national icons, credited with inspiring Japan in its post-WWII malaise. Now in their 70s, we meet the surviving teammates at a lunch get-together, the camera orbiting around these casually tough champions with a reverence that recalls the opening of Reservoir Dogs. As demonstrated in his visionary John McEnroe documentary In the Realm of Perfection, director Julien Faraut has a genius for repurposing archival footage in new ways. The Witches of the Orient brilliantly intercuts a wide array of source material: training films, transcontinental broadcasts, and most memorably, clips from vintage anime and manga fictionalizing the team’s journey. Music is the motor that ties together and propels Faurat’s gripping montage, including new original songs by Grandaddy mastermind Jason Lytle. 2021 Rotterdam Film Festival. (MK)

Absolute honour chatting to Jason Lytle; singer and songwriter for the band Grandaddy, as well as solo musician and absolute legend, on this episode of the podcast. It's hard to describe how much it meant to me to chat with Jason, I'm incredibly thankful. 'Sophtware Slump' is an album that really affected me and my music taste in a major way, hearing it recently reworked and stripped back on the wooden piano was absolutely wonderful too. It's not just that album though, Jason's work just hits me where it hurts (in the best way possible) and; in particular, his solo release 'Yours Truly, The Commuter' gained new meaning when I had to go back to London and commute daily a while back. I don't think I ever quite cried at 8am on a packed Central Line tube, but I've sure come close (that's a lie, I've cried on the tube plenty of times).Support the show (https://ko-fi.com/miztrujillo)We cover a lot on the episode. I was looking forward to chatting about Jason's relationship with skateboarding and how that affected his trajectory, I obviously wanted to talk about music, but we also touch on mental health, marketing, our relationship with social media, finding balance and everything in between. The Grandaddy frontman and songwriter saw the anniversary as an opportunity to re-record one his band's most-loved albums from a lifetime away and with a vastly different arrangement.
Escuchar audio
How do you discover a band that you thought you already knew and had maybe even written off as an uncool oldies band? That’s one of the main questions I ponder in the second part of this marathon episode about the Beach Boys. The episode contains an exclusive performance by Grandaddy’s Jason Lytle.
In our previous episode, we met Grandaddy front-man Jason Lytle, and were introduced to the world of ARTHUR KING - a collective of musicians and film-makers associated with the Dangerbird Records label, in Los Angeles. The ferry from Mallaig had just arrived on the Isle of Eigg, and the ARTHUR KING gang were about to disembark, and begin their week long stay as part of our VISITATIONS artist residency project.Donning all-white laboratory overalls and red-beanie hats, the team immediately set about extracting samples of their surroundings with recording devices, creating an hypnotic collage of wildlife, nature, weather and local gossip. This provided the sonic landscape, over which the members improvised - culminating in a performance in the living room of one of the island’s residents, and a trippy late-night slot at the Ceilidh Hall as part of our Howlin’ Fling! festival. In this second episode of the podcast, we chat to Jason Lytle, Aaron Espinoza and Peter Walker about life on Eigg, their recording process and the creation of the music for the project, as well as the experience of performing at Howlin’ Fling!. It also features an exclusive recording of Jason performing a classic Grandaddy song on piano, live at the festival. If you’d like to support this podcast, and listen to the music that has been created by ARTHUR KING, you can do so by signing up to VISITATIONS. Our second series of Lost Map’s artist residency project, VISITATIONS, gets underway with a release from ARTHUR KING - a collective of musicians and artists associated with the Dangerbird Records label, in Los Angeles.Their journey was sparked by an online conversation between Jason Lytle (front-man with alt-rock pioneers, Grandaddy) and Pictish Trail, in early-2019; having seen photos of our first series of VISITATIONS, Jason was keen to embrace the opportunity to explore the Isle of Eigg, and collaborate with his musical cohorts, Aaron Espinoza and Peter Walker of Dangerbird. All of this was to be captured on camera, manipulated, and projected back onto the island itself by fellow Arthur King companions, John Schlue and Aaron Farley. In this first episode of the podcast, we chat to Jason about his life in music, and his journey to Eigg … and we hear from Aaron Espinoza and Peter Walker about the Arthur King project itself. If you’d like to support this podcast, and listen to the music that has been created for this project, you can do so by signing up to VISITATIONS. Daft-pop impresario Pictish Trail (aka Johnny Lynch) runs Lost Map Records from the remote Scottish isle of Eigg. In 2018, he conducted an artist residency programme on the island, inviting three different music acts over to write and record new material during the course of a week’s stay. The music they made was pressed on to vinyl, and available as part of a subscription set from the Lost Map website. The project was called VISITATIONS, and it returns in 2020 for a second season. There are three new acts taking part this year - the otherworldly L.A. collective ARTHUR KING (featuring alt-rock hero, Jason Lytle, of Grandaddy), the ecstatic post-punk of Glasgow’s RACHEL AGGS (of Sacred Paws, Shopping and Trash Kit), and the hypnotic sway of Winchester’s finest ROZI PLAIN. For this second podcast series, Pictish Trail will be interviewing the various musicians involved, asking them about their lives in music, and their experience on the island. If you’d like to support this podcast, and listen to the music that has been created for this project, you can do so by signing up to VISITATIONS. This week, a special conversation with the founder and sonic visionary behind one of the America's most beloved and underrated roots-and-noise-rock groups, Grandaddy: Jason Lytle. Starting from humble beginnings as a trio of skateboarding friends in Modesto, CA in the early 1990s, Grandaddy put out a series of daring, deeply weird records all produced and written by Lytle that first caught fire in Europe, and by the turn of the Millennium, the band found themselves headlining rock festivals like Glastonbury in the UK and crashing late night TV in the US with the cool kids. But Jason wasn't cut out for traditional cookie-cutter stardom. Grandaddy broke up for six years, and after disappearing into the Montana wilderness, the soft spoken multi-instrumentalist mountain-crazy songwriter kept his devoted fanbase coming back by creating oddly-titled solo records of cinematically rich soundscapes that encircled whacked anti-heroes and telling poetic, campfire-ready short story songs that still make us worried kids feel heard and seen but also constantly keep us guessing. His latest “NylonAndJuno”, which dropped in August on Dangerbird Records, is an experimental instrumental album made entirely with a nylon string guitar and a vintage Roland Juno synthesizer. Zach was able to catch up with Jason before a rare and recent solo show in LA.
NYLONANDJUNO finds Jason Lytle trying something new. It’s a set of songs constructed around limitations — in this case, all of the music is played on a synthesizer and guitar, with a broken bottom nylon string. It’s also an entirely instrumental album, a far cry from the singer-songwriter’s days fronting indie-rock mainstay, Grandaddy. The record finds Lytle joyfully exploring new territory more than 20 years into his professional recording career. With a number of his fellow Arthur King collective members in town for an art exhibition, the musician joined us to discuss the ups and downs of his long celebrated career, time as a pro skater and reconnecting with the joy of making music.
The group’s URL evocatively posits the question, Who Is Arthur King? It’s not a particularly easy question to answer. It never is with a collective. For the sake of brevity, we’ll cowardly default its own description. Arthur King is an experimental music and visual art collective seeking to engage the tension between the known and unknown inherent in creative expression. For the sake of this interview, Arthur King is, in part, former Earlimart guitarist Aaron Espinoza and painter, John Schlue. The first of a three part series, the duo will be joined in coming weeks by Grandaddy’s Jason Lytle and No Age’s Randy Randall. All parties sat down to discuss their on-going collaborations while putting on an exhibition in Manhattan. In this first part, Espinoza and Schlue discuss the collective’s multimedia work.

The musician Jim Fairchild joins us for our final episode of series one. Jim plays guitar in Grandaddy - alongside our former guest Jason Lytle - and Modest Mouse, and he also works as a solo artist too. It was when he was with Grandaddy that Jim first got to know Elliott Smith properly. The band joined Elliott on tour following the release of Figure 8 and they built up a friendship after that. Jim would even arrange for Elliott to come onstage to sing at the occasional Grandaddy live show and would visit him at New Monkey studio when he was trying to fix old equipment. In this episode, Jim shares some great Elliott stories, as well as going in-depth on his favourite song pick. Hope you enjoy this one. We'll be back with a new series in a few months - in the meantime, please do share the podcast with anyone you think might be interested. **Extra things to look at / listen to:** * Happiness by Elliott Smith on Spotify: [https://open.spotify.com/track/3aU2ui8JQOtmgHYH0g1qFL?si=BG4sNlz6S6yIHcYC9KAfGA](https://open.spotify.com/track/3aU2ui8JQOtmgHYH0g1qFL?si=BG4sNlz6S6yIHcYC9KAfGA) * Figure 8 by Elliott Smith on Spotify: [https://open.spotify.com/album/7DC0pE943VR5tAKIvQXHts?si=k7gT_SU3Q6ioiKzwEqWT0g](https://open.spotify.com/album/7DC0pE943VR5tAKIvQXHts?si=k7gT_SU3Q6ioiKzwEqWT0g) * He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's the Pilot by Grandaddy on Spotify: [https://open.spotify.com/track/6v7xLYNIdtJkyCGsenzQxh?si=eNa3DE0wTE2z5yL8y15wiw](https://open.spotify.com/track/6v7xLYNIdtJkyCGsenzQxh?si=eNa3DE0wTE2z5yL8y15wiw) * Recording of Elliott playing He's Simple... with Grandaddy: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jZ0_YUXO-I](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jZ0_YUXO-I) My Favourite Elliott Smith Song is produced by Rob Comba and Elizabeth Withstandley. Our guest for episode 14 is the musician Jason Lytle. Jason made his name as the frontman of Grandaddy, and it was with that band that he met Elliott Smith for the first time. Grandaddy had just released their second album, The Sophtware Slump, while Elliott had recently put out Figure 8, and they had been lined up to tour together. In this interview, Jason discusses the moment he met Elliott for the first time, how their friendship developed and, of course, his favourite song. We loved hearing Jason's stories, so we hope you enjoy this interview too. Kramies Windt visited our studio earlier this year as a backing member of Joe Sampson's band. But the Denver singer-songwriter makes his own brand of acoustic folk music that has gained an international audience. Under the name Kramies, Windt has worked with producer Jason Lytle of Grandaddy and collaborates regularly with Colorado musicians like Sampson and Anthony Ruptak. Kramies returned to the CPR Performance Studio this month to play four of his own songs. He also spoke with Jeremy Petersen about his hiatus from making music, working with the Australian record label Hidden Shoal and his forthcoming new album.
Ian, Josh and Paul break down Jason Lytle's epic collision of tech and humanity.

I have named the Nursecast in honour of the fact that Mrs. Toad has been unthreateningly but rather inconveniently ill for the last few days and I have been nursing her gently back to health. And by nursing of course I mean taking the opportunity to lounge around in bed next to her and watch stupid videos while she suffers. I know, I know, I'm a gem.We have a couple of new and exciting announcements from Tom Waits and Jason Lytle on this podcast, as well as a rather interesting-sounding new band from about as far North in Scotland as it is possible to get before you fall into the sea and have to paddle frantically for Iceland. And, just to cheer us all up, the sun has finally come out, which is at least some consolation for the fact that the Edinburgh International Festival of Overpriced Shit landed on us last week, and will have to now be studiously avoided for the next month01. At the weary end of every night throughout South By Southwest, Bob Boilen, Carrie Brownstein, Robin Hilton and Stephen Thompson have met up on the Austin streets to break down all the events of the day. And then, in the cruel light of morning, we've posted these rambling and often existential recaps here in podcast form. In this third installment, the gang, recap their favorite moments including Japanese band Camisama, a new band from Jason Lytle and Earlimart, party rocker Andrew WK, The xx and so much more.
Three years after the breakup of his widely adored space-pop group Grandaddy, singer Jason Lytle has returned with one of the year's best albums, Yours Truly, The Commuter. Lytle showcased the new songs, along with some old Grandaddy favorites, in this full concert, recorded live at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City July 11.
