The Glam Album That's Actually Power Pop Gold: Enuff Z'Nuff's Dazzling 1989 DebutYou've seen the neon. You've heard the name. But have you listened? Enuff Z'Nuff's self-titled 1989 debut is a glittering paradox: glam on the outside, power pop on the inside. Packed with lush harmonies, Beatlesque melodies, and MTV-ready swagger, it was a record caught between worlds—and in this episode, we unpack every hook, story, and squealing solo.We dig into why this record, released in the chaos of late-'80s rock, still feels so timeless. From the genre-defying sound to the band's rollercoaster history, we explore what makes Enuff Z'Nuff an underdog classic that not only beat Iron Maiden in a fan vote, but continues to inspire debate decades later. If you're into Cheap Trick, Jellyfish, The Posies, or even early Oasis, this one's for you. It's glam with heart. Pop with punch. And a whole lot of sequins.

On the heels of the announcement last week of a much anticipated new album by indie folk band The Head and the Heart, I'm excited to be able to share the following conversation with the band's Matty Gervais. This is one of your first chances to hear more about their exceptional new collection of tunes, Aperture, the band's sixth LP, which will be out on May 9th. There are already a few beautiful introductory singles online now, including the anthemic "Arrow" and the newly shared album opener, "After The Setting Sun." It was a pleasure to connect over zoom with Matty to talk about the making of Aperture and how it heralds a new chapter of freedom and collaboration for THATH. We also talk about some earlier THATH history, how they have benefited in more recent years from band therapy, and his own personal creative process for this new album. And of course we start by delving into Matty's early life experiences with music, growing up in Seattle during the grunge explosion, falling in love with recording his songs using a boombox technique he heard Dave Grohl describe in an interview, playing in bands with his brother and eventually joining THATH more than a decade ago. You can pre-order or pre-save Aperture, and get tickets for their upcoming shows HERE!Preview:3:30 - 13:00 - Early life experiences with music, learning to play drums, growing up during grunge, going to Bumbershoot with his parents, getting into Posies, Fastbacks, Supersuckers, The Presidents of the United States of America and other local bands13:20 - 21:00 - Writing and recording his own songs using Dave Grohl's boombox technique, developing his sound, playing in various bands leading up to joining THATH21:15 - 31:00 - Observing THATH as a fan, joining the band, adapting to their fame:31:00 - 34:00 - Band therapy and its benefits35:15 - 40:00 - Aperture, how it started and the writing and recording processes that arose from there40:30 - 49:00 - "Forest Bath": Walking through the woods writing melodies and lyrics; the inspiration for “After The Setting Sun”

WARNING: EXTREMELY SENSITIVE CONTENT Ken Stringfellow was a founding member of the Posies, who enjoyed a long career as one of the best power pop bands of the 90s and beyond. He also held down recurring gigs with REM, Big Star, Giant Sand and many others as well as a solo career. In 2021 this was all upended when three women accused him of sexual assault. Since then almost all of his musical partners have distanced themselves from him and he's had to (almost) start over from scratch. This year he released his first album since his world imploded called Circuit Breaker which is about as primal a creative response to this as you'll ever hear. Ken joins us this week to tell his side of the story. It's a tricky subject that we chose to approach journalistically and neutrally. We apologize in advance if anyone is triggered by this conversation as that was not our intention.  www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod  www.rainn.org/resources www.kenstringfellow.com

Once in a while, you find a band that just does everything right. Western Massachusetts band THE GLAD MACHINEhas all the right elements, the big hooks, big guitars and the reliable rhythms that make it a joy to discover. The band is helmed by vocalist Brad Thayer with Neal Robinson (Bass), Greg Saulmon (guitar) and Mike Franklin (drums) Tommy Pluta (2nd guitar/vocals). The list of influences is a who's who of power pop; Cheap Trick, The Posies, Jellyfish, and Superdrag. It's been a long time since The Glad Machine's self titled album, but thankfully the quartet from Northampton Massachussets have lost none of their chops. Indeed, there's even more variety on "Hey". The group sound and blend as well as ever and the diversions are interesting and beautifully played.Brad Thayer is still well in Robin Zander territory and the band's default is somewhere between Cheap Trick and Sloan, but the subtleties are more evident on "Hey." Eight songs, eight big choruses, wonderfully produced, "Hey" is an album of songs that rock out, but also two slower affairs that show a very different side of The Glad Machine. The best part is that we have even newer music to look forward to from THE GLAD MACHINE!!! Thanks for listening!!! As September ends, it is time to start thinking about the holidays as they are fast approaching! This week's episode features the Ellwood City Hometown Holiday Toy Drive and we're honored to have Rhiannon Schnell, Board of Director member of the Ellwood City Chamber of Commerce & representative of the Ellwood City Borough. We start the episode off learning about what this wonderful Hometown Holiday Toy Drive is and why it is so important for the community.  The toy drive is a collective effort between the Ellwood City Chamber of Commerce, the Ellwood City Borough and the Ellwood City Area School District. The school identifies families that may need extra help at Christmas time. The Chamber of Commerce handles the advertising and acts as the main sponsor of the event and the Borough handles toy collection and helps with distribution. What makes this toy drive so special is that it is specific to only the families that live in Ellwood City. Everything collected stays in the Ellwood City community! If you're wanting to donate but are wondering what is being accepted:  New, unwrapped toys for really any age are appropriate. The toy drive helps families with children from kindergarten all the way to 12th grade. Also, if there are any smaller children in the family, we will do our best to help them out as well so really no toy is too young. We do accept monetary donations that would be used to purchase gift cards for some of the older kids if we do not have items suitable for someone in high school. We do encourage people to donate items that would be able to be used for older kids such as make up kits for older girls or hoodies for the boys.  Checks can be made payable to the Ellwood City Chamber of Commerce and mailed to the Ellwood City Borough in care of Rhiannon Schnell at 525 Lawrence Avenue, Ellwood City PA 16117. Current Drop Off Locations for toys:-Busy Beaver Ellwood City -Wesbanco in Franklin Twp. What the Riff?!?
1993 - July: Candlebox “Candlebox”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later May 15, 2023 44:59

Candlebox had a seemingly immediate success with their self-titled debut album in July 1993.  The group had formed in November of 1990, with lead singer Kevin Martin, guitarist Peter Klett, bassist Bardi Martin, and drummer Scott Mercado as the founding members.  They performed in clubs around Seattle, a musical mecca at the time that benefitted from the grunge movement, and released an EP that got the attention of the new Maverick Records.  Maverick would sign Candlebox, and the group would be the studio's successful act.  While grunge was still king in Seattle and on the air waves at the time, Candlebox does not neatly fit into that category.  Some of the band's work has a grunge feel, but it tends towards a more mainstream hard rock sound in general.  The debut album Candlebox would peak at number 7 on the Billboard album charts, and would see a number of singles hit both the radio and video charts.  The strength of their songs would land them as openers for Rush and Metallica, and they would be headlining their own tours by the end of 1994.Despite the rapid success, the popularity of Candlebox was a slower burn at the time.  The album did not enter the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart until August of 1994, and initial reviews were mixed.  However, the album would remain on the chart for 104 weeks, and would be certified 4x platinum in the United States.Candlebox would release three albums with Maverick Records before running into disputes, and they disbanded in 2000.  A revised lineup would reappear in 2006, and a new album would be released in 2007.  As of this podcast Candlebox has released seven albums and is still performing today.Rob brings us this debut album for this week's podcast. YouThe second single was inspired by the time that lead singer Kevin Martin gave up drug dependency.  He had seen Midnight Oil in concert and dedicated himself to becoming a rock singer.  The single peaked at number 78 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 6 on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks charts.  The song in 6/8 time alternates between a heavy rock feel on the chorus and a softer portion in the verses.Don't YouThis song leads off the album, and is a deeper cut that was not released as a single.  It really rocks from the start.  “And I could break your heart down as I tell you that you've burned out.  Don't you?  You want to let it go, yeah - you want to let it go, yeah.”RainAnother deeper cut with a very bluesy feel at the start that continues for several minutes before picking up the pace.  The lyrics are about a woman leaving the singer, and the regret the singer feels at the loss.  About three minutes in, it changes to a more rocking jazz section with a staccato scat meter in the lyrics.Far BehindThe third single would be the big hit from the album.  Their most commercially successful song went to number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 4 on the Album Rock chart.  It was written as a tribute to Andrew Wood, a singer from the Seattle group Mother Love Bone, who died of a heroin overdose in 1990.  The lyrics are written from the perspective of the drug that killed him.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Saturday Night by Ned's Atomic Dustbin (from the motion picture “So I Married an Axe Murderer”)  The Mike Myers dark comedy featured this cover of the Bay City Rollers' song on its soundtrack. STAFF PICKS:Long Day In the Universe by Darling Buds Wayne opens up the staff picks with a deeper cut, and one that also appeared on the soundtrack to “So I Married an Axe Murderer.”  The Darling Buds are from South Wales, forming in 1986 and disbanding in 1993.  Andrew Lewis, the lead singer, tells about a woman that misses her man so much she can't wait for him to come home. Dream All Day by The Posies  Bruce's staff pick is another Seattle band.  This song hit number 4 on the Modern Rocks Chart and number 17 on the Mainstream Rocks chart.  Band members and songwriters Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow wrote this about dreaming of accomplishing things that the singer either can't or won't achieve. Have I Told You Lately by Rod Stewart Rock legend Rod Stewart begins his crooner phase with this cover of the Van Morrison classic from 1989.  Lynch brings this staff pick which hit number 5 on the US and UK charts.  Morrison originally wrote these lyrics inspired by spirituality and religious conviction.   Zooropa by U2Rob reminds us just how big U2 was at the time with his staff pick.   The “Zoo TV Tour” was a huge production, highlighting the commercialism of the time.  “Be a winner, eat to get slimmer.”  This song takes the form of a suite of three movements.  The album of the same name was produced by Brian Eno. COMEDY TRACK:Achy Breaky Song by “Weird” Al Yankovic We close out today's podcast with Weird Al's parody of the Billy Ray Cyrus country hit which was constantly played at the time.

Ranking The Beatles

If Revolver is the record where The Beatles remove any illusion to their drug use, "She Said She Said" may be one of the cornerstones of that moment. A song with origins from an evening of tripping on LSD in Los Angeles, it's a song that straddles a number of different lines. It rocks, but it's not rocking. It's psychedelic but not trippy. It's autobiographical but filled with illusion. It's probably my favorite guitar tone of all time. It's also a song that's a bit mysterious. Whoever "She" is, what she's saying is confusion. What's it like to be dead? How does she know? Who the hell is playing the bass? Regardless of the answers to these questions, it's just a killer track, and one that really sums up the Revolver ethos, in my humble opinion. Joining us this week is songwriter, singer, guitarist and producer Jon Auer. Jon first made his name in the 90s as a founding member of now-defunct power-pop heroes The Posies, whose albums Dear 23 and Frosting on the Beater landed them all over MTV and alternative radio in the 90s, as well as landing a track on Ringo's Time Takes Time album ("Golden Blunders," originally from Dear 23). He also spent 17 years as member of the reunited legendary Big Star. With surviving founding member Jody Stephens, Jon recently joined Wilco's Pat Sansone, R.E.M.'s Mike Mills, and Chris Stamey of the dBs for a tour celebrating the 50th anniversary of Big Star's debut release, #1 Album. Jon joins us to talk a number of things, including this LSD-soaked Revolver track, who played bass on it, his Ringo & Peter Asher connection, the recent Big Star tour, and more! What do you think? Check him out on Twitter at @heminator.Mark's Music Pick: Big StarHow do you merit an episode of Political Beats when you've released only a handful of albums in your career? When two happen to be among the best pop/rock records ever recorded and a third is a fascinating “"lost masterpiece” that's never had a real, official release and is steeped in so much mystery no one is even sure what the correct track order might be. That, and much more, is the story of Big Star.In actuality, there's a rich story behind the music of Big Star, from bad luck to poor distribution to bad timing to, much later, acknowledgement of the stellar work that was done. The songs they recorded form the rock solid foundation of power pop, influencing bands decades into the future. Some of your favorite artists likely learned numerous tricks from Big Star, bands like The Posies, R.E.M., Teenage Fanclub, Gin Blossoms, Wilco, Matthew Sweet, The Replacements, and many more.Only a few thousand copies of Big Star's records sold upon release, both a comment of the prevailing tastes of the early 1970s and an indictment of the distribution strategy (or lack thereof) of the band's labels. We try to explain the genius of both Alex Chilton and Chris Bell and come to praise the contributions of Andy Hummel and Jody Stephens to the arrangements. If you don't know Big Star, this is a perfect introduction. As a side note, Mark Hemingway becomes our very first three-time guest on the show, opening the door for others to return again in the future. Coming off the hit "Here and Now" from their debut Aurora Gory Alice, Letters To Cleo followed-up with the equally catchy Wholesale Meats and Fish. Lead single "Awake," with it's handclaps and catchy hook by lead singer Kay Hanley, is just one of many power-pop adjacent tunes that lean more towards the noisy side of the genre inhabited by The Posies and Matthew Sweet. But to pin down LTC would be a mistake, as the opening ripper "Demon Rock" demonstrates, or the sixties-infused "Little Rosa" demonstrate. This episode has wide-eyed virginal opinions from Jim, who loves many of the groups famously influenced by this record but had never heard it plus a ton of fun uberfan Adam tales from Elliott Smith requests to one-off Big Star tribute nights plus the usual eloquent ramblings of Dan and Sam. A must-listen for fans of Indian songs. Hear it at WeWillRankYouPod.com, Apple, Spotify and your local Big Star grocery store.
