On the heels of two Grammy-winning albums in succession, with her band Golden Highway—2022's Crooked Tree and 2023's City of Gold—plus a nomination for Best New Artist, Molly Tuttle returns with a solo album that's her most dazzling to date: So Long Little Miss Sunshine. Recorded in Nashville with producer Jay Joyce (Orville Peck, Miranda Lambert, Lainey Wilson, Eric Church, Cage the Elephant), the fifth full album from the California-born, Nashville-based singer, songwriter, and virtuoso guitarist features twelve new songs—eleven originals and one highly unexpected cover of Icona Pop and Charli xcx's “I Love It.”   Tuttle's career, which began at age fifteen, has charted a course between honoring bluegrass and stretching its boundaries. On this album—a hybrid of pop, country, rock, and flat-picking, plus one murder ballad—she goes to a whole new place. Her stunning guitar work is more up-front on this album than ever before. (One of the most decorated female guitarist alive, Tuttle was the first woman to win the prestigious International Bluegrass Music Award's Guitar Player of the Year in 2017, at age twenty-four, and won again the following year, with nominations nearly every year since; she has also won Americana Music Association's Instrumentalist of the Year award.) So Long Little Miss Sunshine also features Tuttle playing banjo, something she's never done on one of her albums before.    The album was recorded with a group of musicians that includes drummer/percussionists Jay Bellerose and Fred Eltringham, bassist Byron House, and Joyce on multiple instruments. Ketch Secor (Old Crow Medicine Show) also plays banjo, fiddle, and harmonica, as well as singing harmony.  Tuttle also conceived the artwork for So Long Little Miss Sunshine, which features multiple Mollys, each wearing a different wig except for one with nothing on her head at all. (“I probably own as many wigs as I own guitars,” she says.) Tuttle has been bald since she was three years old due to the autoimmune condition alopecia areata; she acts as a spokesperson for the National Alopecia Areata Foundation.   One album track, “Old Me (New Wig),” is “about leaving all these things behind that don't serve you anymore,” she says. “Parts of yourself that really aren't in your best interest, like low self-esteem, anxieties, and not feeling confident. Learning to own these different aspects of my personality but not letting them control me is another theme of the record that inspired the album title and the cover art. Those are all things I've struggled with through the years—just feeling like an impostor, like I wasn't good enough. I like singing this song because there are days when I still have to tell myself to leave that stuff behind.'”   Most of the So Long Little Miss Sunshine songs were co-written with Secor, who is also Tuttle's partner. “We spend so much time together, we live together, and anytime I have a song idea, or he has one, it's just so easy to transition from whatever we're doing into writing a song.”  Earlier this year, Tuttle played guitar and sang on Ringo Starr's new country album, Look Up. She also played with him and a host of other stellar musical guests at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium and Grand Ole Opry as part of his televised Ringo & Friends shows. She was inspired by his fearlessness in following his passion for country music. “It is cool to see someone like that who has done everything you could imagine doing in a music career and he's still just so psyched and still has a list of things that he wants to accomplish,” Tuttle says. Looking back on her own career, “It has never been a cookie-cutter thing where I'm just going down a straight road. I always had this crooked path.”

THE VIBEwith Kelly Cardenas presentsSPEECH - ARRESTED DEVELOPMENTTodd "Speech" Thomas is a Grammy-winning artist, poet, and trailblazing cultural icon whose impact on hip-hop, social justice, and Black culture is both profound and enduring.  As the visionary leader of Arrested Development, the two-time Grammy Award-winning hip-hop collective, Speech has used music as a force for empowerment, reflection, and positive change. His artistry and activism have paved the way for generations, blending socially conscious themes with a commitment to equity, unity, and creative integrity. Since their debut in 1991, Speech and Arrested Development have been a groundbreaking influence in hip-hop, celebrated for their bold reimagining of the genre. Their debut album, 3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life of…, sold over 4 million copies and garnered numerous accolades, including Grammys for Best New Artist and Best Rap Single (“Tennessee”), two MTV Awards, a Soul Train Music Award, and an NAACP Image Award. Rolling Stone named them Band of the Year, and VH-1 recognized Arrested Development as one of the greatest hip-hop artists of all time. Their hit song "Tennessee" was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's list of the "500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll," a testament to its lasting influence on music and culture. Speech's contributions were spotlighted in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's acclaimed documentary South Has Got Something to Say, where he remarked, “There would be no Outkast without Arrested Development”—a powerful reminder of Arrested Development's role in shaping Southern hip-hop and paving the way for future icons.  Arrested Development's fusion of Afrocentric spirituality, social consciousness, and community-centered themes forged a path in hip-hop that few have rivaled, influencing artists globally and solidifying their legacy as cultural innovators. Despite these contributions, Speech and Arrested Development's pioneering role in popular culture is often underrecognized, though their influence is undeniable. In 2024, Speech's legendary status was further cemented as he joined an elite lineup performing with Queen Latifah, Common, De La Soul on the CBS Grammy Tribute to 50 Years of Hip Hop. This performance underscored his contributions to the genre, which were also recently honored by the State of Georgia with the prestigious Privilege House Resolution, recognizing his lifelong dedication to the arts, social justice, and cultural advocacy. INCHSTONES PLAYBOOKhttps://a.co/d/hil3nloSUBSCRIBE TO MY SUBSTACKhttps://thevibebykellycardenas.substack.com?r=4nn6y5&utm_medium=iosBUY THE VIBE BOOK https://a.co/d/6tgAJ4c BUY BLING https://shop.kellycardenas.com/products/kelly-cardenas-salon-bling SUPPORT HIGH FIVES FOUNDATION https://highfivesfoundation.org/ EXECUTIVE PRODUCER - BROOKLYN CARDENAS https://www.brooklyncardenas.com/

But the thing is, Yola's music career wasn't new, and her background wasn't in country music. She's from Bristol in the UK, and starting back in the early 2000s, she was a vocalist recording tracks for DJs and electronic music producers. In January 2025, Yola put out an EP called My Way. And as you'll hear her explain in this episode, a lot of her new music is motivated by wanting to assert her identity beyond the Americana and country music boundaries. In addition to her music, she's also acting – she played Sister Rosetta Tharpe in the 2022 film Elvis, and she starred on Broadway in the musical Hadestown. She was nominated for a Grammy for Best New Artist, and this year she's up for another Grammy, for Best Duo Performance, for her collaboration with Taylor Swift. But for this episode, I talked to Gracie about her song “I Love You, I'm Sorry.” It was produced by Aaron Dessner, at Long Pond Studio in upstate New York, and it was co-written with Audrey Hobert.Coming up, you'll hear the isolated tracks from the studio recording, but you'll also get to hear a lot of the voice memos that Gracie recorded during the writing process. I think it's so nice to have these raw moments documented because, as you'll hear, they give you an insight not just into the song, but into the relationship that Gracie and her co-writer Audrey have as friends. For more, visit songexploder.net/gracie-abrams.
