1986 hat die britische Band The Smiths ihr drittes Album "The Queen Is Dead" veröffentlicht. Das erste Musikvideo gab es dann zu dem Song "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side" vom Album "The Queen Is Dead". Why does Getting Away With It still sound so impossibly sophisticated? In this episode of Low Noise, we explore the debut single by Electronic, the collaboration between Bernard Sumner, Johnny Marr (and Neil Tennant) that briefly united two of the defining musical worlds of the 1980s. Released at the close of the decade, Getting Away With It feels suspended between confidence and insecurity, glamour and emptiness, sincerity and performance. With its immaculate production, layered synths and quietly devastating lyrics, the song captures a particular kind of late-night modernity: elegant on the surface, uncertain underneath. A song about confidence, alienation and possibly pretending to feel more certain than you really are.In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.https://www.facebook.com/share/1F15mx4ea3/https://buymeacoffee.com/lownoiseWhy buy me a coffee?Low Noise is proudly ad-free. The Radiohead guitarist talks about finding spirituality, life inside one of the most mythologised (and occasionally polarising) bands of the last 40 years, and his second solo album, Blue Morpho.Ed O'Brien has been a guitarist in Radiohead since the band formed at Abingdon School in the mid '80s, playing a supporting role across a catalogue largely written by Thom Yorke. He comes from a guitar tradition that runs through Johnny Marr, John McGeoch and Will Sergeant—players who serve the music rather than themselves. His second solo record, Blue Morpho, is his most fully realised statement away from the band. The themes running through it are spiritual, in the broadest sense. With anything related to group dynamics or current affairs averted by request, in this RA Exchange, O'Brien speaks with RA's Editor Gabe Szatan about a long period of depression during lockdown, the meditation practice that pulled him through it and his deepening interest in devotional music and sound as a physical force, which has fed his subsequent songwriting. He also discusses the wider arc of a life in music: his years at Parlophone, the early Radiohead webcasts, the move from OK Computer to Kid A and what it felt like to climb back on stage with the band last year. Blue Morpho is out May 22 on Transgressive Records. Listen to the episode in full. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

After a massive tour in 2006, Pearl Jam's 2007 was a lot less chaotic than the 79-show tour that spanned three continents. They went back to Europe for 12 shows, half of them being festivals in places they've barely visited, and then two memorable shows in Chicago - Vic Theatre and Lollapalooza. This episode covers the Munich show from this run, one of their few arena headlining gigs from the tour. It was their first to back since 1992, a memorable night where they performed the Ten album in full. After heavily supporting the Avocado record the year prior, this show specifically doesn't feature the same plethora of songs from the album. When supporting the record, they'd begin most of their shows with some kind of combination of World Wide Suicide, Life Wasted, Severed Hand and Marker In The Sand with around a total of eight songs from the record played, but in Munich they significantly reduced that album's representation opting for only three songs. However, Severed Hand is a major highlight from this show, and Unemployable will take us to a conversation where we connect it to a random 70's song that has nothing to do with Pearl Jam. Other highlights include the return of Sometimes after a long absence, a killer version of Sad, Matt Cameron's patented Even Flow solo for the era and how some of the gear Mike was using impacted songs like Given To Fly and Present Tense. We'll also share the story of Ed's #5 guitar, how it relates back to Pete Townshend, and how it further relates to both Johnny Marr and Noel Gallagher in a wild tale that all gear and music nerds will enjoy. This week Baxie talks to Michael Pickering—one of the former DJs at the infamous Hacienda in Manchester, England. Michael has just released his incredible memoir, “Manchester Must Dance”. In it, Michael takes a firsthand account of how the club became an extension of Factory Records (And how it was financed, in part, by the record sales of two its biggest artists: New Order and Happy Mondays.) Together we talk about how the club succeeded and what led to the Hacienda's spectacular collapse. We also talk about his participation in the film "24-Hour Party People" about the Hacienda changed music forever. On top of that, we also discuss how he adopted the help of writer Paul Morley, Johnny Marr from The Smiths, Martin Fry from ABC, Calvin Harris, and Noel Gallagher from Oasis! We even talk about Michael's amazing music career after Hacienda! A great interview with a seminal figure in Manchester's fascinating music history. Formed by Rob McDonnell (vocals/guitar) alongside Baz Daly (bass) and Justin Capocci (drums), with former Keeley guitarist Dan Kane later completing the lineup, Kampala have quietly built a reputation as one of Ireland's most compelling underground guitar bands — balancing dark-edged atmosphere with driving, melodic immediacy. Drawing inspiration from several decades of iconic sounds, the band's music carries echoes of Depeche Mode, The Cure, Smashing Pumpkins, Suede, Seattle Grunge, Johnny Marr, Joy Division, Gang of Four, DIIV, Interpol, Foals, among others. In more recent times, the band have also been influenced by contemporary artists such as Fontaines D.C., The Murder Capital, NewDad, The Twilight Sad, Osees, Lo Moon, The War On Drugs, Deep Sea Diver to name but a few. Since 2022, Kampala have built their following through relentless gigging across Ireland and Germany, earning a reputation for intense, immersive live shows. With Madernity, Kampala step fully into their identity — a band documenting the present moment with grit, melody and intent. The album's fourth single and emotional centerpiece, “It's Not Me, It's You” explores the liberating moment of recognising toxicity in a relationship. It's both personal and universal — a sharp contrast to the album's broader social lens. Written late in the album process, the track earned its place instantly. “The chorus hook was irresistible. As soon as we heard it, we knew it had to be on the record.” Recorded in a single live take like the rest of the album, it captures Kampala at their most immediate and emotionally direct.

As we bemoan the state of the world today and endure the anxiety of this cryptofascist, post-truth reality, we risk losing sight of the real danger to us all: savage fish men! Today we go right back where it all started, Universal's seminal entry in this monster subgenre, Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), directed by Jack Arnold. We then skip lightly over its first sequel and focus on its under-rated third entry, The Creature Walks Among Us (1956). Fair warning: we go into the plots of both films in some detail, including the endings, but these films are over 70 years old and the storylines don't have much in the way of twists in any case, so we won't be announcing a Spoiler Territory section for either of them. It debuted at #5 on the UK album charts so congrats Cribs on that. We discussed the new album and how having a long pause between records actually made it better. We also talked about The Cribs recent US tour with The Rapture, some of their earliest New York shows, the CMJ festival, how both Ryan and Gary live in the US now -- New York and Portland respectively -- plus Johnny Marr, Janet Weiss, reality television and more. What happens when a classically trained cellist becomes an Americana soul-seeker and an award-winning director? In this episode, we sit down with Janie Price, the creative force known as BIRD, to explore a career that defies categorization. From her early days picking up the cello at age six to her recent acclaim from legends like Johnny Marr and Roy Orbison Jr., BIRD's journey is one of relentless creative curiosity. We go behind the scenes of her stunning new single, "The Film," a track that began in a rented room in Italy during the 2020 lockdown and traveled all the way to Nashville to be finished by Americana's finest musicians. The 5-Year Song: Why "The Film" needed half a decade to age like a fine wine before it was ready for the world. Music as DNA: Growing up with the cello and how a classical foundation paved the way for pop hits and indie anthems. The Director's Chair: The transition from songwriting to filmmaking, including her award-winning short Wider Than The Sky and her upcoming Roy Orbison documentary. The Nashville Connection: Collaborating with Jay DeMarcus (Rascal Flatts) and Ilya Toshinsky to find the perfect "Strange as Folk" sound. Global Empathy: How living between London and Tuscany shapes her perspective as a storyteller. Whether you're a fan of cinematic folk, a filmmaker in the making, or just love a deep dive into the creative process, this conversation with BIRD is a masterclass in staying true to your artistic vision. __ Love the show? Fáilte ar ais chuig eagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo ar an 31ú lá de mí Dheireadh Fómhair, liomsa Lauren Ní Loingsigh. I 1986 tháinig sé amach go raibh Samantha Nolan ar ais lena chlann I mBaile Átha Cliath tar éis obráid a shábháil a shaol. I 2003 tháinig sé amach go raibh RTÉ chun thaispeáin a lán sacar príomhroinn tar éis a rinne siad margadh chun thaispeáin cluichí gach Sathairn do trí shraith. I 1970 bhí méadú den cháin bhóthair sa bhuiséid nua. Bhí an méadú ann do fheithicil príobháideach, cáin ar só agus cáin do chomhlachtaí. Sin na rudaí a tháinig an aire airgeadas amach leis sa Dáil. I 2003 bhí bagairt ann go mbeadh ardú de na praghas de thí nua timpeall an tír ach tháinig Comhairleoir timpeall an chontae amach nach mbeidís chun é seo a dhéanamh. Tháinig siad amach ag moladh tobhach nua. Sin Fatman Scoop le Be Faithful – an t-amhrán is mó ar an lá seo I 2003. Ag lean ar aghaidh le nuacht cheoil ar an lá seo I 2005 dhíol siad culaith a chaith John Lennon ar an chlúdaigh den albam Abbey Road, I gceant do 118 míle dollar I Los Vegas. Dhíol siad Austin Princess a thiomáin John Lennon sa scannán faisnéise Imagine, do 150 míle dollar. Chuaigh cuid den airgead go dtí Amnesty International. I 2007 chabhraigh Leona Lewis leis an íoslódáil ar líne sa Bhreatain mar íoslódáil timpeall 1.7 milliúin daoine amhráin éagsúla I seachtain amháin. Welcome back to another edition of Ar An Lá Seo on the 31st of October, with me Lauren Ní Loingsigh 1986: Little Samantha Nolan was back in the arms of her family in Dublin after an operation that has probably saved her life. 2003: A feast of live premiership football was being promised by RTE after it secured a deal to screen Saturday afternoon matches for the next 3 seasons. 1970: Car owners were hit in the budget after An increase in the cost of road tax on private vehicles, wholesale tax on luxuries and direct taxation of companies were the features of the supplementary budget brought into Dáil Eireann by the new minister of finance. 2003: The threat of massive hikes in the price of new housing across the country was removed by Clare County Councilors when they rejected the draft scheme proposing a range of new levies at their adjourned October meeting. That was Fatman Scoop with Be Faithful – the biggest song on this day in 2003 Onto music news on this day In 2005 The white suit worn by John Lennon on the cover of the Beatles' Abbey Road album sold for $118,000 (£66,385) at an auction in Las Vegas. On this week's throwback episode, DJ EFN, Manny Digital, and KGB sit down with M.C. Serch for a real one! From sharing a birthday with Manny to sharing the mic with legends, Serch brings stories that hit home. He kicks things off with a wild tale about his wife's water breaking on the way to his birthday lunch, leading to their son being born the very next day. Since then, Serch has kept his own birthday lowkey to keep the shine on his son. He opens up about becoming a young dad, deciding to get a vasectomy after baby number three, and always making sure his presence in his kids' lives was felt even while balancing a busy music career. But Serch doesn't stop at just fatherhood. He talks family dynamics, the value of marriage counseling, and how they handled the empty nest phase. He also shares what it was like teaming up with Johnny Marr from The Smiths and how his wife, a huge fan, was completely starstruck.
