Mr. Tambourine Man fylder 60: Da The Byrds skabte folk-rock

POINT of VIEW International

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 17, 2025 60:10

Tambourine Man' udkom. You can't get around it if you were born anywhere between 1963 and the present day.” Tambourine Man' skrevet af Dylan – som også 'All I Really Want To Do', 'Chimes of Freedom' og 'My Back Pages'. - "Mr. Hvad var The Byrds oppe imod? The Beatles og The Beach Boys? Gene Clark. Hvorefter de var tre tilbage. Roger McGuinn, guitar og sang. Chris Hillman, bas og sang. Michael Clarke, trommer. - The Byrds musikalske udtryk forandrede sig indtil de stoppede i 1973. Hvordan?

Benmont Tench is the keyboardist and a founding member of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. That's reason enough to listen to this podcast. I've interviewed other icons—Duff McKagan, Johnny Marr, and Jerry Harrison, to name a few—and they all have one common thread: a voracious appetite for art in all its forms. They consume books, movies, paintings, poetry, sculptures, you name it. Artists with longevity know that to create art, you have to constantly consume it.Tench is no exception. “The more I read, the more chance I have to get inspired because I'm opening myself up to language. But I'm inspired by all art; I'm even inspired by looking out the window. It all comes in, and it all shows up in my writing,” he says.  When I asked Tench if he favors any certain medium, his response was simple: “From Milton to Milton Bradley.” He's also the first songwriter I've interviewed to cite both Manet and the Steve Martin movie Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid as inspiration.Tench's solo album The Melancholy Season is out now. Send us a text

John McKay in conversation with David Eastaugh https://thejohnmckay.bandcamp.com/album/sixes-and-sevens McKay's influence lives on; many of the most influential guitarists of the past four decades credit him as a major influence - Geordie from Killing Joke, Jim Reid of The Jesus And Mary Chain, U2's The Edge, Thurston Moore, Johnny Marr and even the two guitarists - The Cure's Robert Smith and Magazine's John McGeoch - who followed him in The Banshees.

McKay's burgeoning status as the anti-guitar hero was halted when he and Banshees drummer Kenny Morris - at odds with Siouxsie and bassist Steve Severin - fled the band just after the start of a tour supporting the group's second album, Join Hands. It was a weekly music paper scandal, later the subject of a BBC documentary, and Siouxsie's vitriol working its way into the lyrics of a later Banshees b-side, "Drop Dead / Celebration". Aside from a solitary single on Marc Riley's In Tape label nearly a decade later, no music was heard from McKay again. So it comes as a major surprise to learn of a pile of excellent recordings made in the years just after he left The Banshees, unheard by all but a very few, some of which feature drummer Kenny Morris, plus Mick Allen from Rema Rema, Matthew Seligman of the Soft Boys and longer-term collaborator Graham Dowdall and John's wife Linda . . . the latter three of whom are now sadly deceased.

Sixes And Sevens is an historic lost album. Brazenly genius and bearing fair claim as the lost treasure of the post-punk era, the album collects eleven studio tracks, carefully mastered from original tapes. It's a masterpiece which best speaks for itself.

(Smiths, Electronic, and others) we were fortunate enough to see them both in one night.  You could too - as they are touring together in 2024.   Tonight Eric and I chat about our experience at the show, play some live tunes from that night (and some from other nights of this tour).    We had a blast at the show, and another one making this show for you.  If you like any of the tunes we played tonight, or maybe become interested in the bands we talked about - go to their website and buy their tunes, merch and tickets to go see them live.  We were NOT disappointed - and would expect any red-blooded music lover to feel the same.   As always - we appreciate both of you listening and enjoying our award-winning world class show - and if you'd like to be one of our "special friends" - next time we are live - you just type into the chat "Pour Me another Brother" and you are in our club !   Rock on with your bad self.

Sedan 1979 gör Matt Johnson musik under namnet The The. In this episode, we dive deep into The Queen Is Dead, the iconic third studio album by The Smiths, ranked #66 on Apple Music's Top 100 Albums of All Time. Released in 1986, this record showcases the genius of Morrissey's introspective lyrics and Johnny Marr's jangly guitar riffs, blending themes of loneliness, social commentary, and dark humor with a unique mix of indie rock and post-punk. We'll dissect standout tracks like the anthemic “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out” and the sarcastic “Bigmouth Strikes Again,” discussing the band's influence on alternative music and why this album remains a beloved cornerstone in the genre. Tune in as we explore the cultural significance of The Queen Is Dead, break down its timeless tracks, and share our thoughts on its lasting legacy in music history.

That's How I Remember It

Billy Bragg is a hero of mine and also my guest on this episode of That's How I Remember It. He's a fantastic songwriter, incredible performer, outspoken activist and so much more. We talked about him teaching songwriting to hospice patients, songwriting allowing us to say things we can't always say, Johnny Marr playing on “Greetings from the New Brunette”, his portable PA system The Portastack, his first US shows, and how he has great faith in the American people. A thrill for me to have Billy here, it was a great talk. Listen and subscribe.

How Queer Culture Shaped Pop Culture "The 1972 version of David Bowie didn't spring from nowhere.  Although he refused to affiliate himself explicitly with gay liberation, he had found both artistic and social inspiration in the gay world, in particular the renewed sense of freedom and possibility that rippled through the British gay subculture in the early 1970s." We finally lured the award-winning, bestselling author, pop-culture, punk penman Jon Savage to the Bureau to talk about his life and epic new book The Secret Public: How LGBTQ Resistance Shaped Popular Culture (1955–1979) It's an electrifying, massively entertaining - and at times, tragic - look at key moments in music history between 1955 and 1979, which helped move gay culture from the margins to the mainstream and changed the face of pop forever – from the ambiguous sexuality of stars such as Little Richard in the 1950s through to David Bowie, glam rock and Sylvester's ‘You Make Me Feel(Mighty Real)'. We talked about all that, about Punk, Joy Division, Tony Wilson, Johnny Marr, Factory Records and about how Jon grew up in the London of the late '50s and '60s, how he became a writer during one of the most exciting times for music journalism in the '70s and '80s - and about his own Secret Public Life.. Table Manners with Jessie and Lennie Ware

This week we have a true rock and roll star joining us, it's legendary guitarist Johnny Marr! Creator of the iconic ‘Meat is Murder' album, Johnny is - of course - a vegan, so I made an array of vegan dishes for us. Shout out to NYT app and @boldbean cookbook for the recipes. We heard all about the meals his mum made while growing up in Manchester, his first band called ‘Paris Valentinos', getting married in San Francisco while on tour with only the band & crew in attendance, the delicious meals Hans Zimmer serves up on the road and that he is the very proud owner of 134 guitars!! Thank you for being a total delight Johnny, you're welcome back for another vegan spread anytime! Johnny's Spirit Power ‘Best of' album is available now, and the UK tour kicks off on April 2nd. Plus his 'Marr's Guitars' book is available to purchase now. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
