SLOTHRUST rocks this episode of THE CITY'S BACKYARD PODCAST as we talk with lead singer/guitarist Leah Wellbaum! Slothrust — the duo composed of principal songwriter, guitar player, and unrepentant aesthete Leah Wellbaum and drummer Will Gorin — recently unveiled their brand new EP entitledI Promise, out now via Dangerbird Records.A key part of the tracklisting is the band's standout cover of Ginuwine's "Pony," on which they shamelessly wield and respect the track's raunchy nature and punch it up with a sludgy musicality, praised by outlets such as Billboard, Consequence, and Stereogum, and additionally added to the official Spotify 'Rock Covers' playlist. In addition to their new EP release, Slothrust has embarked on a tour in celebration of the 10-Year Anniversary of their release, Of Course You Do. The duo (a trio when playing live shows) is on it's second leg of the tour, with continued support from Weakened FriendsFor more on SLOTHRUST click here for tour info and more! https://www.slothrust.com
"Everything On Memory" The Fresno-born, Modesto-raised Jim Fairchild got his start on guitar as a teenager and in the mid-nineties became the lead guitar player for the indie rock outfit Grandaddy. That would be enough to make a resume' shimmer, but Fairchild was just getting started. He was the touring guitar player for Giant Sand, he worked with everyone from Hawaii to Dappled Cities and he took over for Johnny Marr in Modest Mouse in 2009 and played lead guitar for them until 2021. Fairchild fronted the band All Smiles, he was selected to lead a project at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2010 and started a new project called Grace Meridian in 2020. But that's not all—Fairchild currently is the Director of A&R for Dangerbird Records and he's scoring films like the documentary Common Ground and Bee The Change, which is narrated by Ellie Goulding. And we haven't even talked about Small Isles yet. Their new EP Everything On Memory has been described by Fairchild as, "written as the imagined score to a Christopher Nolan-directed movie I dreamt about in which Donald and Steven Glover wrote a script in response to Modest Mouse's "Third Planet”. To my ears, Small Isles' new release is a moody blend of spellbinding cinemascapes, arching crescendos, soaring distant melodies and futuristic percussion, all of which adds up to one of the most spellbinding releases of the year. Fairchild recently scored the documentary film Common Ground (Donald Glover, Laura Dern, Woody Harrelson, Rosario Dawson, Ian Somerhalder) which won the Tribeca Film Festival “Human/Nature” award. He is currently working on the follow up, Bee The Change narrated by Ellie Goulding, which will premiere at COP 28 (United Nations Climate Change Conference). Hataaliinez Wheeler grew up in Window Rock, Arizona, the capital of the Navajo Nation. And though he's just recently released his Dangerbird Records debut, Singing Into Darkness, he's spent the last few years creating as much art as he can—recording music, making lo-fi videos, and writing poetry. Sunbaked and sly, the new album is full of strange grooves and quixotic lyrics, and a sound that borrows from country, surf, indie rock, and shoegaze. We first heard Hataałii through Michael Klausman, who wrote about him for Aquarium Drunkard in 2021, saying, "[I]t was probably predetermined that he'd make music, as Hataałii literally means 'to sing.' His songs are weirdly genreless and out-of-time, yet constantly reach for some sort of cosmic agency. You can frequently hear him experimenting and trying different personas on, but the force of his charisma unites all the disparate elements he puts together. He's a master at conjuring a kind of Southwestern saudade," a feeling of longing melancholy that permeates Brazilian music. Today, he joins host Jason P. Woodbury to discuss his run-in with and shout-out from Mac Demarco, discuss the influence of his father's record collection, and discuss what its felt like for his personal art project to find a life outside of his own head. Night Shop - "Let Me Let It Go" from the 2022 album Forever Night on Dangerbird Records. Night Shop is the solo project of Justin Sullivan, who can often be seen hitting the skins as the touring drummer for Kevin Morby, in addition to playing with Waxahatchee, Hand Habits, The Babies, Anna St. Louis, and LA post-punk outfit Flat Worms. This past February, he unveiled Night Shop's debut album Forever Night via Dangerbird Records which saw a lot of these prior collaborators give back to their favorite drummer. Early single and Song of the Day “Let Me Let It Go” features Meg Duffy of Hand Habits on guitar, Jess Williamson, Anna St. Louis and Woods/Purple Mountains' Jarvis Taveniere providing engineering and co-production alongside Sullivan so it truly is a family affair. The rollicking horn-laden track its inspiration from Dante and Beatrice's love and “the concept of courtly love,” according to Sullivan. “A journey to hell, the pursuit of art, the Shangri-Las, and finding peace in what is, not how we think things should be.” The video for the track sees Sullivan fleeing directors Jeff Davenport and Cooper Kenward, sprinting through the streets of LA. “I think we just wanted to offer a sense of escape and abandon that comes with both loving someone and also surrendering our attachment to a certain outcome in regards to that love,” Sullivan explains. “I'm just trying to get at the proper expression of a feeling; in this case, a deep yearning. So I think visually, you want to complement that sense. A desire to see and feel everything and escape from the smallness of your own thoughts.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Joel Jerome is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Los Angeles, CA. His solo debut, Super Flower Blood Moon (Dangerbird Records) hits the streets on May 13th, and promises a dark, folky trip that celebrates his 90's indie rock influences as much and it pays homage to his latin roots. In this episode Joel tells us how the pandemic opened his eyes to activism, how that's translated to his work with The Union of Musicians and Allied Workers (UMAW) and why unions are important to working musicians. We hear how his long time pal Jim Fairchild (Modest Mouse, Grandaddy, All Smiles) had a hand in the early stages of Super Flower Blood Moon and why it was different from past records. Joel also share's his view on "capturing recordings" verses "producing" and how thats applied in his own studio, Psychedelic Thriftstore. Joe plays a couple tunes from the new record and Joel tells us where's he's looking forward to touring in 2022. https://dangerbirdrecords.com/https://joeljeromemusic.bandcamp.com/https://www.izotope.com/https://us.minorfigures.com/
Slothrust - "Once More For the Ocean," a 2021 single on Dangerbird Records. "This song felt like it was handed to me by the ocean," says Slothrust bandleader Leah Wellbaum about today's Song of the Day. The Brookline native continues: It came to me when I was sitting on some rocks and staring at one of my favorite oceans in the world, on Star Island off the coast of Rye, New Hampshire. The bass line arrived first, and then the melody and the lyrics came at the same time. I didn't have an instrument with me that week so I sang what I had into my phone notes and carried on with my day, almost forgetting about it entirely. I have a unique relationship with this song because it felt like it came through me more than from me, though I recognize that really there is no difference. It is not the easiest song to sing or explain. At times I even wondered if it might be suited for a different artist. However after sitting with it for a while I have come to the conclusion that this song was meant for me and it is about the search for a greater consciousness in times of chaos. For me that feeling of oneness often shows up when I am spending time in nature. "Once More For the Ocean" can be found on the band's fifth full-length, Parallel Timeline, out September 10th via Dangerbird Records. In our previous episode, we met Grandaddy front-man Jason Lytle, and were introduced to the world of ARTHUR KING - a collective of musicians and film-makers associated with the Dangerbird Records label, in Los Angeles. The ferry from Mallaig had just arrived on the Isle of Eigg, and the ARTHUR KING gang were about to disembark, and begin their week long stay as part of our VISITATIONS artist residency project.Donning all-white laboratory overalls and red-beanie hats, the team immediately set about extracting samples of their surroundings with recording devices, creating an hypnotic collage of wildlife, nature, weather and local gossip. This provided the sonic landscape, over which the members improvised - culminating in a performance in the living room of one of the island’s residents, and a trippy late-night slot at the Ceilidh Hall as part of our Howlin’ Fling! festival. In this second episode of the podcast, we chat to Jason Lytle, Aaron Espinoza and Peter Walker about life on Eigg, their recording process and the creation of the music for the project, as well as the experience of performing at Howlin’ Fling!. It also features an exclusive recording of Jason performing a classic Grandaddy song on piano, live at the festival. If you’d like to support this podcast, and listen to the music that has been created by ARTHUR KING, you can do so by signing up to VISITATIONS. Our second series of Lost Map’s artist residency project, VISITATIONS, gets underway with a release from ARTHUR KING - a collective of musicians and artists associated with the Dangerbird Records label, in Los Angeles.Their journey was sparked by an online conversation between Jason Lytle (front-man with alt-rock pioneers, Grandaddy) and Pictish Trail, in early-2019; having seen photos of our first series of VISITATIONS, Jason was keen to embrace the opportunity to explore the Isle of Eigg, and collaborate with his musical cohorts, Aaron Espinoza and Peter Walker of Dangerbird. All of this was to be captured on camera, manipulated, and projected back onto the island itself by fellow Arthur King companions, John Schlue and Aaron Farley. In this first episode of the podcast, we chat to Jason about his life in music, and his journey to Eigg … and we hear from Aaron Espinoza and Peter Walker about the Arthur King project itself. If you’d like to support this podcast, and listen to the music that has been created for this project, you can do so by signing up to VISITATIONS. As 2019 draws to a close, we meet up with our good pal, Chef Royce Burke of Secret Lasagna fame, at one of Los Angeles’ most anticipated restaurants of the year, All Day Baby. We take a look back on the last 12 months and all the ups, the downs, the old, the new and the key players that made L.A.’s dining scene so exciting. In keeping with the themes of reflection and Los Angeles, we pull from our archives the first-ever live music recording we did at the Silver Lake studios of Dangerbird Records. Performing for us that day in 2018 were Peter Walker, Aaron Espinoza and John Schlue of the music-and-art collective, Arthur King. This week, a special conversation with the founder and sonic visionary behind one of the America's most beloved and underrated roots-and-noise-rock groups, Grandaddy: Jason Lytle. Starting from humble beginnings as a trio of skateboarding friends in Modesto, CA in the early 1990s, Grandaddy put out a series of daring, deeply weird records all produced and written by Lytle that first caught fire in Europe, and by the turn of the Millennium, the band found themselves headlining rock festivals like Glastonbury in the UK and crashing late night TV in the US with the cool kids. But Jason wasn't cut out for traditional cookie-cutter stardom. Grandaddy broke up for six years, and after disappearing into the Montana wilderness, the soft spoken multi-instrumentalist mountain-crazy songwriter kept his devoted fanbase coming back by creating oddly-titled solo records of cinematically rich soundscapes that encircled whacked anti-heroes and telling poetic, campfire-ready short story songs that still make us worried kids feel heard and seen but also constantly keep us guessing. His latest “NylonAndJuno”, which dropped in August on Dangerbird Records, is an experimental instrumental album made entirely with a nylon string guitar and a vintage Roland Juno synthesizer. Zach was able to catch up with Jason before a rare and recent solo show in LA.
We’re visited once again by our good friend, acclaimed food and beverage educator, journalist and cookbook author, Katie Parla. In her latest book, she breaks out of her adopted hometown of Rome to taste, explore and research Italy’s southern peninsula, including visits to such regions as Campania and Puglia. The resulting work is Food of the Italian South which features 85 recipes Katie gathered during her travels. We drop into the legendary Dangerbird Records’ studio for a meetup with the brothers Rosen--guitarist/vocalist Jonathan and keyboardist/producer Michael--who go by the band moniker, Cones. Though each are longtime musicians, the brothers have just recently began collaborating, and their debut album, Pictures of Pictures, has drawn comparisons to Big Star, The Replacements and ELO.The holiday season is all about food and community. For decades, Lincoln Carson has been one of the most respected pastry chefs in the industry. During his illustrious career, Lincoln’s worked with such notable names as Eric Ripert, Daniel Boulud and Michael Mina. He’s now tackling both savory and sweet, and lining up a long queue of diners, at his critically acclaimed brasserie, Bon Temps, in Downtown Los Angeles’ Arts District. We then cruise up the 101 to meet up with our good pals at Silver Lake’s Dangerbird Records who give us another installment of their Microdose single series. This time they cue up longtime Los Angeles underground music mainstay Joel Jerome, who performs his new song, “There’s Nothing Here To Bother You Anymore”, live in-studio for us. He described it to us as, “A day where we’re going to collide streetwear and food.” The upcoming fete features the combined talents of restaurants such as Jon & Vinny’s, Secret Lasagna, Felix and Howlin’ Ray’s, and artists, brands and designers like Verdy, James Jean, Mr. Cartoon and Chinatown Market collaborating on one-of-a-kind dishes and limited merchandise. Keeping things Angeleno we head over to Silver Lake to Dangerbird Records’ studio to meet up with Brazilian singer-songwriter Samira Winter and her eponymous band, Winter. After Samira and Darin commiserate about their college days in Boston, she and her crew give us a listen to dreamy songs from their latest release, Infinite Summer. We open the show in Lima, Peru, with legendary chef Virgilio Martínez. He’s redefined the cuisine of his homeland by diving deep into the country’s incredibly diverse ecosystems and indigenous ingredients. He’s served potatoes that only grow thousands of feet above sea level, unleashed the flavors of wild varieties of quinoa and amaranth seed and even used kushuru, an edible cyanobacteria harvested in high-altitude wetlands. His flagship Central Restaurante is one of the most acclaimed and groundbreaking restaurants in the world. For music we revisit one of the most memorable bands we’ve had on the show: Tropa Magica. Back in October 2018, the Pacheco brothers, David and Rene, performed for us live in-studio at Dangerbird Records’ studio in Los Angeles. The East L.A. natives are longtime fixtures in the local music scene, and their unique high-spirited “psychedelic cumbia punk” sound is sure to get your feet moving. Snacky Tunes is powered by Simplecast.
It’s an all Eastside L.A. episode. We open in Echo Park with Chefs Akira Akuto and Nick Montgomery, owners of the hit Japanese sandwich shop Konbi. The two longtime friends and restaurant industry vets opened the daytime restaurant in fall of 2018, and it instantly gained critical notoriety and a cult following for its katsu and egg salad sandos. Our good pals at Silver Lake’s Dangerbird Records give us an up-close look and listen to their Microdose single series with dream pop upstarts Mirrorball. The band is the project of singer Alexandra Johnstone and guitarist Scott Watson, both longtime fixtures in Los Angeles’ underground music scene. The duo share their story with us along with some of their latest songs, including the single “This Time.” Snacky Tunes is powered by Simplecast.
Christian Page is the chef / co-owner of one of Los Angeles’ most iconic lunch counters and burger joints, Cassell’s Hamburgers. Originally opened in 1948, Cassell’s rose to wide acclaim before shuttering in 2012. Christian and his partner Jingbo Lou resurrected the brand in late 2014 in the Hotel Normandie--they now have a second location in DTLA--and began once again slinging some of the best burgers and patty melts in the country. We return to Dangerbird Records’ studio in LA, and things get loud and fun with a visit and performance from SGV hardcore band Hungry Ass Youth. Formed in 2007 by best friends David “Flea” Ayon (guitar) and Jessie Castro (vox), the band has a devoted following for its comic stylings and odes to fast food, weight issues and anti-health. Joel Miller and Karl Hess operate one of our favorite podcasts, Yelling About Pâté. Joel’s a comedy-loving chef, and Karl’s a food-loving comedian, and every week they interview culinary and comedy industry luminaries. As they say, “It’s back of house meets back of the room.” Los Angeles quartet Criminal Hygiene has been doing the rock band thing since 2011. Since that time they’ve developed a strong following for their garage rock vibes and smart, catchy lyrics. Their latest record is called Run It Again, and they perform live for us at Dangerbird Records’ studio. Snacky Tunes is powered by Simplecast.
In 2017, husband-and-wife team Daisy and Greg Ryan traded the fine dining environs of the vaunted New York City restaurant Per Se for the quaint, down-home vibes of Los Alamos, CA, a small town of less than 2,000 people. A year later they opened Bell’s, a French-inspired bistro that’s become a critical darling and must-visit for anyone hanging out in the Santa Ynez Valley’s wine country. Danny Nogueiras was the touring drummer for punk rockers FIDLAR before breaking off to launch his solo endeavor the band NO WIN in 2015. Danny and company are poised to debut their highly anticipated first full-length album, downey, which is a candid look at his personal experiences growing up in Southern California. NO WIN performs live for us at Dangerbird Records’ studio in Los Angeles. Snacky Tunes is powered by Simplecast.
It’s a globetrotting episode, and we uncork it all in London’s East End with sommelier-restauranteur Charlie Mellor. He’s the owner of The Laughing Heart, a contemporary British restaurant that specializes in showcasing natural wines. Charlie’s got one of the more interesting backgrounds we’ve encountered. He’s a former professional opera singer who made his stage debut in his native Australia in Richard Wagner’s drama, Tristan und Isolde. In Los Angeles, we catch up with Compton’s own The Pantheons. The post-punk quartet is one of a slew of young bands helping to shape the city’s music scene. They give us a raucous live perfomance at the studios for Dangerbird Records in Silver Lake. Chef Zach Swemle and Marlee Blodgett are the dynamic duo behind the beloved Neapolitan-inspired La Morra Pizzeria. The pair met in NYC, and decamped for Charleston, SC, where Zach built a mobile pizza oven from the bed of trailer. La Morra then developed a fast and dedicated following. A year later in the summer of 2017, they rolled out of town and headed to Los Angeles where they’ve been wowing the masses with their slow-fermented dough and wood-fired pies. Dev Ray is the solo project from California native Devin Ratliff, former member of dream-punk bands So Many Wizards and Tomemitsu. Dev Ray’s debut 2017 single was a moody synth cover of The Pointer Sisters’ classic, “I’m So Excited”. We catch up with him at Dangerbird Records’ studio where he gives us a live listen to his newest songs. Snacky Tunes is powered by Simplecast

“I’ve always been a proponent of not making the same record twice,” Holly Miranda says. “Some people find a niche and go with that, but I need to try something different every time.” That’s more than apparent on Mutual Horse, Miranda’s third release for Dangerbird Records, out February 23rd. The album, Miranda’s fourth full-length solo release, is more than just an artistic step forward, it’s a whole new way for her to make music. “This really is the most collaborative record I’ve ever done,” she says. “It’s first time I’ve shared so much of the writing and the production, the meat and bones of making an album.” With support from a stellar circle of players – including My Brightest Diamond’s Shara Nova, TV On The Radio’s Kyp Malone, Grandaddy/Modest Mouse’s Jim Fairchild and Built To Spill’s Matthew Morgan amongst others – it’s Miranda’s astonishing singing vocal that is set free, elevating this collection of songs as no one else could. An instrument which can shift from a barely-there whisper to a soaring wail that cracks open the sky, Holly’s voice is startling from the moment it emerges on Mutual Horse. This record finds Holly bridging the gap between 2010’s experimental synth laden release The Magician’s Private Library and 2015’s stripped-back, soulful self-titled record. Miranda takes an honest and intimate approach, while maintaining her sense of humor amidst sonic explorations. The tracks run the gamut from the sultry, driving “On the Radio,” to a cover of Crazy Horse’s “When Your Lonely Heart Breaks,” and the delicate “Sing Like,” inspired by Miranda’s mother; an intimate clip of her singing while pregnant with Holly follows the song. www.hollymiranda.com getthefunkoutshow.kuci.org
Since its launch in 2012, Health-Ade Kombucha has become one the most popular wellness brands in the country. We catch up with Justin Trout, Health-Ade’s co-founder and COO, to learn more about the history of the company--hint: hair loss plays a part--and we also talk about his career as a professional musician. The Pacheco Brothers, David and Rene, get our feet moving with a live in-studio performance at Dangerbird Records. The Pachecos initially emerged East L.A.’s music scene at Thee Commons, but are now known as “psychedelic cumbia punk” rockers, Tropa Magica. Snacky Tunes is powered by Simplecast.
Michelle Doll was a graphic designer when she decided at the age of 30 to change careers and enrolled at the French Culinary Institute (now the International Culinary Center). For several years, she was a renowned cake designer in New York through her company Michelle Doll Makes; however, her skills extend far beyond cake baking and her true passion is educating the home chef. She now plies her skills as a chef, food writer and culinary teacher, and is the author of Essential Tools, Tips & Techniques for the Home Cook. We’re back once again at Dangerbird Records’ studio in Silver Lake, Los Angeles. This go-round we meet up with singer-songwriter, Matt Costa. Matt discusses his 15-year career, and gives us a live in-studio performance from his new LP, Santa Rosa Fangs--his first full-length album in five years. The record tells the tale of a young woman named Sharon and her two brothers Richie and Tony, and their coming of age in California. It’s a sometimes autobiographical, sometimes fictional journey of Matt’s own life in his native Golden State. Snacky Tunes is powered by Simplecast.
We’ve got a pair of talented SoCal natives on this episode. Chef Jason Neroni grew up in Orange County, and began his culinary career as a teenager at the happiest place on Earth: Disneyland. Following his start at Disney’s famed Club 33 restaurant, Jason worked his way through some of the best kitchens in the country, including Le Cirque, Chez Panisse, Blue Hill and Spago. He’s now the owner of the wildly popular and lauded, Rose Cafe in Venice. In a city flocked with transplants and transients, singer-songwriter Billy Uomo is one of those rarest of birds: a born-and-bred Angeleno. Billy grew up in Silver Lake, and that’s where we catch up with him, meeting up at the studio for Dangerbird Records. Billy and his bandmates perform live in-studio for us, and give us a listen to his latest EP, Hello? Snacky Tunes is powered by Simplecast
Many folks remember Stephanie Izard as being the first woman to ever win Top Chef, but in the years since that victory she’s proven to be one of the most admired and successful chef-restaurateurs in the biz. Besides adding a coveted James Beard Award, Food & Wine “Best New Chef” and even an Iron Chef title to her mantle, Stephanie is best known for her critically acclaimed empire of Chicago restaurants, which include her flagship, Girl & the Goat. She sits down with us to discuss her much-anticipated Girl & the Goat expansion to Los Angeles, and also lets us know how challenging it can be sourcing goats in the city. Speaking of the City Angels, we once again descend upon the Silver Lake studio for Dangerbird Records, and this go-round we capture a live performance from composer, Coleman Zurkowski. Baltimore-bred and NYC-based, Coleman’s making a name for himself for his work with such brands as Netflix, Toyota and Lebron James’ “Uninterrupted” documentary series. He gives us a listen to his first album, ZERO, which was released under Dangerbird’s new “Arthur King Presents” series that showcases experimental music. Snacky Tunes is powered by Simplecast.
The Hmong are an indigenous people who’ve historically called Southeast Asia home. Following the ravages of the Vietnam War, many Hmong escaped to America settling in all places the Upper Midwest. In St. Paul, MN, Chef Yia Vang has been running Union Kitchen, a pop-up restaurant that specializes in Hmong fare, and he hangs with us to explain the nuances of his culture and its delectable cuisine. For “Snacky Tunes 5’s," our go-to oenophile Jameson Fink does some island hopping, and tells us all about the wonders of volcanic wines. We then head to Los Angeles and the Silver Lake studios of Dangerbird Records to get a live, one-of-a-kind performance from Peter Walker and Aaron Espinoza of the music-and-art collective, Arthur King. The duo crafts ambient improvised music utilizing synthesizer, guitar, drum machine and sounds extracted from environmental field recordings, and combine it with the experimental projections of visual artist John Schlue. All the sonic material used on Arthur King’s latest album, Changing Landscapes (Grand Escalante), is derived from a trip to the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in rural Utah. “It’s no easy task for an artist to sum up who they are in one album, much less in one song. And yet, here, at the start of the first verse of the first song of his newest album, Juiceboxxx lays it all out for you: Out of my mind but I’m a hell of a guy, I got the PMA, that’s just an FYI / I got a J-O-B and that’s to stay alive, 24/7 not 9 to 5… “So begins “Freaking Out” on Freaked Out American Loser, the latest album from Juiceboxxx, the Milwaukee-bred punk rap artist who is quite simply the first and last of his kind all at once… “Juiceboxxx grew up in the ‘2000s within the noise, punk rock, and underground rap communities of Wisconsin, and while those banners still fly high independently today, there are very few other artists who not only understand that venn diagram but who are also actively attempting to merge those sounds cohesively. There is something singular about a Juiceboxxx show, wherein he might run through some songs that remind you of Public Enemy—whom Juiceboxxx went on tour with, in Canada—or Beastie Boys. There will be some fast punk songs, and the whole thing might end on an anthemic track like “Never Surrender Forever” that has a Springsteen or Jonathan Richman influence. Yes, there are guitars, but he raps, too; Juice came out of those noise-damaged scenes, and everything he does is coated in a level of intensity. He sticks to his guns. He sleeps with his tension. ““There’s something weirdly eccentric about what I do that puts it to the left of culture,” he says. “I’m trying to do something eclectic but rooted in parameters I set for myself. Almost like when you watch a Beck show from the ’90s… There’s not that many people connecting the dots between rap music and raw rock-and-roll, attempting to use guitars in a different way. I’m not saying I’m the only one, but there’s not many taking classic rap influences and pushing it to more of a damaged-yet-anthemic punk zone.” “Freaked Out American Loser is a punk rap blast that captures the anarchic, aggressive spirit of Juiceboxxx’s live show while also adding a new level of polish, focus, and dare we say, professionalism. “I’m looking at Beastie Boys as the Ramones or something, and trying to build on that language; looking at Public Enemy within the lens of punk rock,” Juiceboxxx says.” ~Dangerbird Records
The Dears released their sixth studio album, Times Infinity Volume One, on February 3, 2017 through Dangerbird Records. Times Infinity Volume One is the first instalment of a two-album body of work, composed by the band over a two-year period, later recorded at sessions between Toronto's Revolution Recording and Montréal's Thee Mighty Hotel2Tango. With Times Infinity Volume Two slated for release in summer 2017. This weeks featured track is 'Golden Ratio' by The Sailmakers. Siphoning ounces of that baggy swagger from the spectacular Urban Hymns, and pumping their own brand of mellow psych into the mix, The Sailmakers give us another taste of what they're made of, and they're proving a force to be reckoned with. “Music is a weapon for me. I want to feel myself bleeding.”Jeff CastelazJeff Castelaz is a big deal in the music biz. A self-made guy who scraped his way from nothing to launch and manage major musical acts, found and run a successful indie label and even serve up president duties at a major record label. All of these things are very impressive and interesting.None of these things are what draw me to Jeff.Jeff is on the show because of his compelling, at times heart-wrenching but incredibly human life story. From his abusive childhood to his struggles with alcohol to the devastating loss of his six-year-old son Pablo to cancer, Jeff is a survivor. A guy who refused to let unbearable pain destroy him, instead leveraging it to access a deeper personal truth, inner strength and sense of purpose.Finding life-saving comfort and solace in both music and cycling as far back as he can remember, Jeff successfully channelled his incredible passion for both into creating a life and legacy of meaning in selfless service to others as an entrepreneur, husband, father and philanthropist. In his most recent post as president of Elektra Records, a division of Warner Music Group, Jeff worked alongside the likes of Ed Sheeran, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Kitten, bringing in acts like Fitz and the Tantrums, Saint Motel, The Moth & The Flame and Kaleo.Prior to his post at Elektra, Jeff served as CEO of Dangerbird Records, which he co-founded in 2003. There, he played a key role in the careers of Silversun Pickups, Fitz and The Tantrums and Liam Gallagher's post-Oasis effort, Beady Eye.In 2009 Jeff & his wife Joanne Thraikill tragically lost their son Pablo to cancer just six days after his sixth birthday. From the moment of Pablo's 2008 diagnosis with bilateral Wilms Tumor, a rare form of childhood cancer, Jeff took to the blogosphere to keep friends and family apprised of developments. Sharing his incomprehensible pain with a bold and raw vulnerability, PABLOG! went viral, resulting in a massive and unexpected outpouring of love and support for Pablo and the Castelaz / Thraikill family. Support Jeff and Joanne ultimately channelled into what would become the Pablove Foundation– a pediatric cancer charity which has raised $10 million to date in support of innovative pediatric cancer research and programs for kids and families living with childhood cancer. Each year since its inception, Pablove hosts a charity ride called Pablove Across America. Today — Monday October 5, 2015 — marks the start of Pablove’s seventh annual week-long cycling event in which 40 cyclists will ride from Los Angeles to San Francisco to raise funds and awareness for childhood cancer.
