Jonah Series; Jonah 3 Mercy Pastor Tom
At New Promise Church you will see people of all ages, from a variety of backgrounds, and at different stages of their spiritual journey. We desire to draw closer to Jesus by understanding who He is and what He has done for us.
In this final episode of our podcast series on the Book of Jonah, we delve into the fourth chapter, where Jonah reacts to God's mercy towards Nineveh with anger and frustration. Unable to comprehend why God would spare such a wicked city, Jonah sits outside Nineveh, hoping to see its destruction. God provides a plant to give Jonah shade, but then sends a worm to destroy the plant, and a scorching wind to make Jonah uncomfortable. When Jonah laments over the plant, God uses this moment to teach Jonah about compassion, pointing out Jonah's concern for the plant despite his lack of concern for the people of Nineveh. This chapter highlights Jonah's struggle with understanding God's mercy and the broader perspective of divine compassion. We'll explore themes of anger, grace, and the boundless nature of God's love, emphasizing how God cares for all creation and desires repentance rather than punishment. In this episode of our podcast on the Book of Jonah, we explore the third chapter where Jonah finally obeys God's command and goes to the city of Nineveh. He delivers a stark message: in forty days, Nineveh will be overthrown due to their wickedness. Surprisingly, the people of Nineveh, from the greatest to the least, believe Jonah's message and immediately begin to fast and put on sackcloth as a sign of their repentance. Even the king of Nineveh humbles himself, issues a decree for everyone to turn from their evil ways, and hopes that God will show mercy. God sees their genuine repentance and spares the city from destruction. We'll discuss Jonah's reluctant obedience, the power of a prophetic message, and the profound impact of collective repentance. This chapter teaches us about the transformative power of humility and repentance, and God's boundless compassion and forgiveness. In this episode of our podcast on the Book of Jonah, we delve into the second chapter, where Jonah finds himself in the belly of a giant fish after fleeing from God's command. From this dark and desperate place, Jonah prays earnestly to God, acknowledging his distress and expressing gratitude for God's mercy. Over the course of three days and nights inside the fish, Jonah reflects on his disobedience and vows to fulfill his mission. God hears Jonah's prayer and commands the fish to vomit him onto dry land, giving Jonah a second chance. We'll discuss the significance of Jonah's heartfelt prayer, the themes of repentance and salvation, and how this part of the story teaches us about God's readiness to forgive and restore us, no matter how far we've strayed. In the first episode of our podcast series on the Book of Jonah, we explore how Jonah, a prophet, gets a mission from God to go to the city of Nineveh and call out their wrongdoing. Instead, Jonah decides to run away in the opposite direction, hopping on a ship to Tarshish. But God sends a huge storm that threatens to sink the ship, leading the frightened sailors to find out that Jonah is the cause. Jonah tells them to throw him overboard to calm the sea, and reluctantly, they do it. The storm stops, and Jonah is swallowed by a giant fish, where he stays for three days and nights. We'll talk about Jonah's disobedience, the powerful storm, the sailors' fear and eventual faith in God, and how Jonah's story teaches us about the consequences of running from our responsibilities and the importance of turning back to God's path. This is a bittersweet episode for us, as it marks the end of our Jonah series!Jonah has definitely been probably my favorite book we've done so far at Mission Hill Youth, because it's equal parts challenging, hopeful, and hilarious. In this episode we tie a bow around our Jonah series by recapping the historical context, the plot, and the point of it all. This episode is a bit different than the others, as it's main purpose is to give you the info you need to 1.) meditate on the truths of the book and how they apply to your life, and 2.) be able to discuss it with someone else! We're glad you're here! Let's get into it :)
We say it all the time, especially in church circles. "God is love, God loves you, Jesus saves, salvation belongs to the Lord!" And it's true! These are true statements! But sometimes we say these things without giving a second thought to the reality of what they truly mean. The truth is, the width and height and depth of the love of God is incomprehensible... and a little offensive. We are in the final chapter of Jonah, and in it we'll see Jonah's stunning reaction to the mercy of God. And at first it sounds completely ridiculous, but if we truly sit on it and think about it, I think we can actually identify with Jonah. For some people, that's a scary place to be in. But I think for the author of Jonah, that's right where he wants you.Welcome! We're glad you're here, let's get into it!
Psychology tells us that how we think about things often reveals a lot about us. For example, did you know that when we picture in our minds the people we respect, they tend to be taller than they actually are? Fascinating stuff! But that's how we picture people we respect. But how do we picture the people we don't respect? That's the question at the forefront of our lesson in Jonah for this week. As we walk through Jonah 3: 6-10, the author of Jonah invites us to consider something really important: how we picture our enemies reveals a lot about our own hearts, and how WE see our enemies vs. how GOD sees your enemy are two very different pictures.Join us as we are confronted with our ideas of our enemies! We're glad you're here, let's get into it :)
Have you ever had the opportunity to share your faith with someone, but you chose not to because you might mess it up? Or you might make yourself look like an idiot? I have done it SO MANY TIMES! It's understandable, but it's also problematic, because when we do that, we are really showing that we don't trust that God can move EVEN IF we are a mess.In our story for this lesson, we will see that this is not the case. In fact, we will see God move in a powerful way despite Jonah's clear imperfections, and I think it carries a powerful message that can free us up from that kind of fear!Welcome to the 5th episode of our Jonah series. We're glad you are here! Let's get into it :)
If you're like me, you KNOW that God is merciful, and you have no problem singing about it at church on Sunday. But sometimes, when you've dropped to your absolute lowest point, it's hard to BELIEVE God is merciful.Luckily for us, we have places in scripture like Jonah chapter 2 that serve as a great reminder of the surprising nature of God's mercy. How low is too low? How far is too far? Tune into this episode and find out! Thanks for joining us, let's get into it!
JONAH SERIES - 5 GOD'S NOT FINISHED WITH YOUSunday, October 1, 2023Jonah 3:1-10“The word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time…”Isaiah 46:10The first and most important thing you need to know is that God never throws your book away. Jonah doesn't want to go to Nineveh. Jonah really, really, REALLY doesn't want to go to Nineveh. "How desperate is he to get away from Nineveh, Brent?" I'm glad you asked dear listener. Let's just say that Jonah's desperate enough that he's willing to compromise on his most fundamental belief, if it means not going to Nineveh... a series of decisions that not only cause him to spiral even more out of control, but also reveal to us the lengths we will go in order to survive. We're glad you're here with us! Let's get into it!
Sermon by Pastor Daniel Escalante
God's on a mission and calls Jonah to go with Him! But Jonah has a mission of his own, and he is much more about HIS mission than God's. Why does Jonah run? We don't know for certain (yet), but the author leaves us clues as to what Jonah is truly like when the rubber hits the road (or rather, the ship hits the sea).On this episode we walk through Jonah 1: 1-6 where we see not only the reality of the human heart, but also the glorious truth that is God's heart. We're glad you're here with us! Let's get into it!

Jonah Series | Week 4 | This is the final week in this sermon series moving through the book of Jonah with Darrell. At the top of this message, Darrell sharply summarizes the four chapters of Jonah. He describes chapter 1 as Jonah running from God. Chapter 2: Jonah running into God. Chapter 3: Jonah running with God, and Chapter 4: the chapter that Darrell covers in this message, is Jonah trying to run God. In this message, Darrell leans into the main thread of chapter 4 which is Jonah's deep frustration with the merciful and compassionate dimension of God, and the reality that God isn't acting how he would. Darrell does just a brilliant job unpacking and clarifying the odd events in this chapter, and applying the good news of Jesus to its abrupt ending. Jonah Series | Week 3 | We're moving through all of chapter 3, which covers Jonah's message to Nineveh and their repentant response. Darrell seeks to answer three questions in this message: First, "Why did the Ninevites repent?", second "What would have happened if they didn't?" and third, "What is the message for our cities and us today?" All throughout, Darrell provides such an accurate window into God's great love and grace for the city of Nineveh. And with the repentance of Nineveh on full display in this chapter, Darrell voices the question that we the listeners might be wondering as he's sharing, which is “Could we ever see something like that in our cities today?” Finally, Darrell concludes this sermon in such a beautifully unique fashion - He simply shares what he would say if he had the attention of his city for just 10 minutes. Jonah Series | Week 2 | Darrell begins by reminding us of the overarching theme of this book - which is God's deep love for the city of Nineveh, and Jonah's struggle to accept that dimension of the God he is called to serve. Jonah flees in chapter one and is quickly reminded in chapter two, in the belly of a saving fish, that He cannot outrun God. For the bulk of this message, Darrell zooms in on the moments in the whale. He focuses on Jonah's prayer - both what it reveals to us about the nature of God and what it shows us about how we can pray to Him. Jonah Series | First Baptist Church, Vancouver, BC, 2012 | Jonah 2 Give to the ministry of Darrell Johnson: www.darrelljohnson.ca/donate Website | darrelljohnson.ca YouTube | youtube.com/darrelljohnson
Jonah Series | Week 1 | Darrell begins the series by covering all of Jonah chapter 1. He starts this episode message by casting vision for the church to be a community that's following Jesus with God's heart for the city. That is the framing Darrell provides for the book of Jonah as a whole - "the book is all about Jonah (and therefore us) being confronted with God's feeling towards the city - His mercy, His grace and His patience extended to those far from Him." Darrell, moving through chapter 1 section by section, shows that there was a dimension of God's heart that Jonah wishes did not exist, and how ultimately in chapter 1 on stormy waters, he had to reckon with it. And the truth is, we have to reckon it as well. He ends by leading the congregation in a prayer that is more than a closing prayer, it's really a prayer that gives space for the Spirit to confront and transform the parts of Jonah that live in all of us. As we study chapter 4 today, we come full circle and realize that this book is not just about the repentance of the people who are preached to, but rather the prophet who does the preaching. Unlike any other prophetic book, we get a window into the soul of a person who is nothing like the God that he serves. As we will see today, Jonah was not merely running from the call of God, but he was running from the heart of God. Speaker: Pastor Ben Dixon -- Thanks for listening. One of the great lessons of Jonah's failure and forgiveness is that God can continue to use those who return to Him. Thankfully, we know that God gives second chances to each one of us. Just like Jonah, throughout history, many spiritual leaders received a second chance to do what God had called them to do. Speaker: Pastor Ben Dixon -- Thanks for listening.
