"The earth seemed unearthly." The character of Kurtz in Heart of Darkness is one of the most enigmatic depictions of villainy in modern times. By the time Marlow reaches Kurtz' compound, his reality has completely been dismantled. Nothing is stable and everything he thinks he knows is subject to deconstruction. Author Joseph Conrad uses doubles, paradoxes, and ironies to show Kurtz as both representative and enemy of the civilizing mission. Our hearts are restless, says Saint Augustine, until they find their rest in God. The biological science and the spiritual metaphor are in agreement here. Over the course of billions of beats, our hearts never stop to rest.  Your magnificent heart exchanges or pumps your entire blood volume, just over a gallon, every single minute. In this episode, Mark Labberton discusses matters of the heart with his close friend Dr. David Anderson, a cardiologist of four decades who trained at Johns Hopkins and helped launch one of the first interventional cardiology programs in San Francisco. Anderson reflects on the medical science of cardiology, the profound life-saving medical advances over the past forty years, heart disease versus coronary artery disease, how the brain and the heart communicate, and what happens during a heart attack. In the second half of their conversation, they move from physiology to spirituality of the heart: Pharaoh's hardened heart, "out of the heart the mouth speaks," and the human need to find somewhere to locate the self. Anderson closes with what a cardiologist would tell anyone worried about their own heart, and with a case for medicine as a noble profession. As Marlow prepares for his journey to the Congo, he visits a psychiatrist who gives him his first glimpse at what he is getting himself into. His introduction into the pseudoscience of phrenology is an ideological starting point for his journey to Africa. Reader and character alike are hit with a wave of disorienting feelings as Marlow has his first interactions with the people of Congo, seeing how they are dehumanized. In the modern day, controversy rages around whether this depiction of Africans represents author Joseph Conrad's view, a larger western view that has been enshrined in the study of history, or just the viewpoint of a character in a book.  This is the second episode in a series on Heart of Darkness. Why Jesus – Because Jesus Gives Ultimate Satisfaction, the Deepest Thirst of the Human Heart

The Echo of God: Mary's Praise and the Transformation of the Human Heart This conference represents a Marian retreat centered on praying . . . . . . “with Mary, in Mary, through Mary, and for Mary,” emphasizing that the purpose of the day is not primarily intellectual instruction but interior experience. The opening prayer . . . the Little Crown of the Blessed Virgin . . . draws on Revelation 12's image of the woman crowned with twelve stars, structured as three “crowns”: excellence (Mary's virtues and divine motherhood), power (her royal and mediating role in salvation history), and goodness (her compassion toward sinners, the suffering, and the dying). The second half of the reflection develops a meditation on the biblical meaning of the “heart.” In Scripture, the heart is not merely emotion but the center of the human person, the place of desire, loyalty, and moral orientation . . . what shapes either good fruit or evil actions (Luke 6:45; Mark 7). The heart is also closely linked with the eyes and ears: what one sees and hears shapes obedience or resistance to God. A divided heart, influenced by many “lords” such as wealth, power, or ego, contrasts with the single-hearted obedience demanded by the Shema (“The Lord is one”). Mary is presented as the model of this unified heart . . . completely ordered toward God, perfectly receptive to His Word, and fully cooperative with the Holy Spirit. In this light, the Immaculate Heart of Mary is understood as the perfectly purified human heart in total relationship with God . . .fully obedient to the Father, receptive to the Son, and fruitful through the Holy Spirit. Her responses in Scripture (“Let it be done to me according to your word,” and “My soul magnifies the Lord”) reveal her as the “echo of God,” where every honor given to her returns as praise to God. The retreat concludes by inviting participants to examine their own hearts: who or what is their true “lord,” and whether their hearts are unified in God or divided among competing loyalties. Eve J. Chung is a Taiwanese American lawyer and women's human rights specialist. She has worked on a range of issues, including torture, sexual violence, contemporary forms of slavery, and discriminatory legislation. Her writing is inspired by social justice movements, and the continued struggle for equality and fundamental freedoms worldwide. After one final hail mary attempt to sway public opinion, Leopold finally agrees to sell his colony to the state of Belgium. For many, the long nightmare was now over. For others, it was only beginning. This is Part 6 in a series on the Congo Free State. As the evidence of atrocities in the Congo Free State became impossible to ignore, direct African resistance developed in numerous places around the Congo. As this was happening, a large and sophisticated human rights campaign developed around some courageous informants, journalists, and human rights activists. King Leopold II of Belgium then developed a response in one of the first modern versions of an information/misinformation shadow war in the age of mass media.  This episode is Part 5 in a series on the Belgium Congo. With King Leopold II of Belgium now in full control of the Belgian Congo, the extraction of ivory and other resources could begin. The story of the plunder of the Congo is so brutal and unbelievable, and at times so hard to believe, that it was once said that "to tell the full story it would have to be fiction." In the early period of the Congo Free State, forced labor and resource extraction ultimately led to atrocities and destruction, but the terror was far from over. This episode is Part 3 in a series on the Belgian Congo. It gives an overview of Congo's rich natural resources, and the ivory boom in the late 1800's that contributed to atrocities. It discusses Leopold's style of rule and role in overseeing the carnage, the development of the ivory "trade" in the Congo, the beginnings of mass death, and the origins of early protest movements and dissent against the state, including from missionaries like George Washington Williams. As European imperialism heated up in Africa in the late 1800's, King Leopold II of Belgium put into motion one of the most ambitious and villainous plans in all of European history - the theft of the entire Congo. Utilizing the work of explorer Henry Morton Stanley, European animus towards the Afro-Arab Slave Trade, the creation of dubious committees and associations, international lobbying of governments, public relations campaigns, and bogus treaties with the people of Congo, Leopold understood that "...we must be cautious, clever and quick to act. I would not expose myself to displeasing the English or letting escape a good opportunity to get some of this beautiful African cake." In 1885, the countries of Europe gave their blessing to Leopold's slice of cake at the Berlin Conference. This episode is Part 2 in a series on the Belgian Congo. It takes a look at how Leopold II of Belgium went from being a monarch of tiny Belgium to the owner of the biggest European colony in Africa.
