Acts 5 gives us a glimpse of the Sovereign God moving redemptive history along despite the persecution of the church. It also gives us insight into the power of sin and grace in human hearts that are part of history. We are called to hope in God to accomplish his work in the world and in our hearts for his glory. Grace Community Church exists to build spiritually healthy people for ministry in the world. One of the ways that we pursue this mission is by gathering each Sunday for corporate worship, prayer, and biblical teaching. In books 11-16 of The Odyssey, Odysseus runs through a murderous string of mythological creatures on his long journey home. The Underworld, seductive Sirens, deadly whirlpools, and six headed monsters are menacing obstacles to overcome, but they also represent different elements of evil in Homer's Greek world. By the end of the this section, Odysseus has finally made it home and is reunited with his son Telemachus. All that's left is to figure out how to take his island back. John Paul II's insight guides us—concupiscence threatens but doesn't erase the spousal meaning of the body. Practical steps follow: morning prayer at the moment of temptation, a clear break with porn and the lies it teaches, and accessible study with Theology of the Body to retrain desire toward self-gift. None of this is about sin management. From there, we confront how fear, power, and confusion have warped our response to crisis, from shutdowns to social unrest. Then we pivot to the beginning. Jesus points us to Genesis in Matthew 19 for a reason: before sin, male and female were created to image Trinitarian love. John Paul II's theology of the body gives us language for what our lives already feel in our bones: your body makes the visible the invisible; its spousal meaning is the call to become a gift—Free, total, faithful, and fruitful. That vision has teeth. We name the lie that the opposite of love is not hate, its lust or grasping; it's use. Porn shrinks the person. Hookup culture counterfeits freedom. Gender ideology splits identity from the body. The answer isn't outrage; it's awe—cultivated through prayer, the sacraments, brotherhood in Christ, and daily choices that train our desires in virtue... toward truth, goodness, and beauty. We share concrete practices to live the truth right now, whether you're single, dating, married, or discerning a consecrated vocation. Great statesmen tell the truth. The problem is that the electorate don't want to hear the hard truth. They only want to hear what is pleasant..."The same can be said of us. Many times we are not interested in what God has to say—not interested in what is right, and what is true, and what is good. We are like the children of Israel telling the prophets, "We want you to tell us what we want to hear." But what will lead to our ultimate well-being? In this episode I'm joined by historian Alexandra Birch to talk about the role of music and sound in Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. We discuss her recent book Hitler's Twilight of the God's: Music and the Orchestration of War and Genocide in Europe, how music and sound contributed to genocide and Nazi identity formation, how the Nazis used music to embed their mythology and ideology into everyday people's lives, the types of music and composers that the Nazi command structure favored or regulated, the psychology of genocide from the victim and perpetrator perspective and how music may have figured into that, some misconceptions and common misunderstandings about music during the Holocaust, the soundscape of horror inside a concentration camp, some of Alexandra's thoughts on holocaust denialism and the role of museums in preserving history, and much more.  Dr. Alexandra Birch is a professional violinist and historian who works comparatively on the Nazi Holocaust and Soviet mass atrocity, including the Gulag through the lens of music and sound. She holds a PhD in History from the University of California Santa Barbara, and a BM, MM, and DMA from Arizona State University in violin performance. Previously, she was a fellow at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Wilson Center, and the Vienna Wiesenthal Institute, where she released CDs of recovered music and finished her first book Hitler's Twilight of the Gods: Music and the Orchestration of War and Genocide in Europe. What happened next?Prompted by one woman's idea this tiny town of 12,000 people transformed its modest railroad depot into the North Platte Canteen. Every day of the year, every day of the war years the Canteen - staffed and funded entirely by local volunteers - was open from five A.M. until the last troop train pulled away a little after midnight. In a time of coupons, shortages, and doing without that comes with war this community provided welcoming words, support, baskets of produce, fresh-baked goods, homemade sandwiches, magazines, books, bottles of milk, cauldrons of coffee, and treats to more than six millions GIs by the time the war ended four years later.Think about it. At a time of national adversity, crisis and deprivation because everything was going to the troops and the war effort, ordinary people pulled together to honor their country's brave sons by giving from the heart and their kitchens, their fields and dairies. Interviews with some of the volunteers and servicemen tell a love story of small-town generosity because it was something that they could do.Question: Yes, these times are perilous; but so was World War II. We might feel like we're fighting a war on our own soil for the first time since the Civil War. But we are not lost when we choose to summon the great expanse of hope that is the human heart. This podcast provides an overview of fascism as both an ideology and a political tactic. In what ways was Nazi Germany a typical fascist state?
