At seventeen, Georgia Durante became the "Kodak Girl" immortalized with her life-size image displayed in more than 80,000 retail stores throughout the world.Soon the magnetic smile that propelled Georgia's modeling career served only to mask the pain she endured from a brutal rape at the hands of her brother-in-law, her first brushes with mob violence, the birth of her daughter, and a failed marriage, all before she turned twenty. The roller-coaster that had become Georgia Durante's life continued its downward ride as she met, fell in love with, and married Joe Lamendola, a respected businessman, but one with a dark secret and ties to the Syndicate.Georgia Durante's retelling of the facts paints a picture of a victim hopelessly caught in a web constructed of her own emotions as well as the abuse and threats of the tyrant whose wife she had become.Suspense and intrigue abound as Georgia recounts the fighter she became in response to her surroundings. She, alone, determined the fate of the madman who had stalked her and kidnapped her daughter.Georgia Durantes constant search for meaning and the life she had always sought but could never quite find, manifested itself with many heartbreaking turns. Along the way, she was faced with:* Tragedy in her life and those whom she loves* The struggle of a child with a drug addiction* Fortunes made and lost  * A confrontation with the "prince of darkness" which ends in deathHer story is powerful and raw; a deeply personal account of one woman's life. Model, Mafia wife, victim and victor, Georgia Durante saw the worst that life had to offer and escaped it. She embraced the positive, but kept the negatives so as never to forget. "Life is what it is," Georgia writes. "How we deal with it is what matters." She has dealt with it the only way she knew how: with determination and courage.EPISODES HEREhttps://www.iheart.com/podcast/1119-wheel-woman-96165410/

We'll also be taking a long look at how Kodak advertised to women over a century ago – did they start a revolution or were they just along for the ride? Want a bit of advice? Well, Vania's on call for that; we've got the answering machine, zine reviews, some recommendations, and a whole slew of fun!   Angel O'Brien: 5×7 Angel When we first saw Angel O'Brien's work, we really didn't know what to do with it. What were we looking at? It's a collage, but built around her self-portraits. And those self-portraits aren't really part of a logical reality. They're shifted and distorted, discolored and bent – but it all seems to be coming from a very centered place. Here is some of her work: IG: @5x7angel IG @5x7angel_thebuiltworld IG: @angelobrien.poet web: https://www.5x7angel.com/   Kodak Girls For women, this began to change in the 1870s. The suffragette movement had won for women the sense that men were more in the way than essential (though it had still not procured their right to vote). With the expansion of cities, the job market grew. And with more jobs than men to fill those jobs, women filled the positions. There were still gender norms, of course, but they were changing. What women could and couldn't do in society was shifting. Women were becoming independent. The new generation, especially those born following the Civil War in the 1860s, felt little need for the Victorian ways of their parents and grandparents. They came of age and into their 20s just as photography was about to make a dramatic shift from the stunningly complex to simple. And it was gender norms that would actually carve out a large share of this new photography for women. This is a live recorded one-off episode, hosted in Jigsaw's London Piccadilly store, all about working in the creativity industries from the perspectives of three generations of creative women. I invited Charly Cox (poet, Gen Z), Serena Guen (founder of Suitcase, Millennial) and Lucia White (Head of design at Jigsaw, Gen X) to talk abut the highs, lows and lessons of getting paid to be creative. This month, Jigsaw is launching their “creativity doesn’t discriminate” campaign, to champion women leaders in the creativity industry, through film, photography, prose and art. Government statistics show that women are still under-represented in the creative industries in the UK - there's never been a more important time to champion creative women. In collaboration with Kodak, Jigsaw are re-launching a 125 year-old campaign – Kodak Girl – into the modern era to celebrate new creative talent. The collaboration - now called Kodak Woman (she has grown up!) - will be supported by a capsule collection of T-shirts and sweatshirts. Early Kodak advertising is mostly associated with the iconic image of the Kodak Girl. Then in the 1930s, Eastman Kodak Company turned their advertising campaigns over to the New York advertising agency J. Walter Thompson. How did this change affect the public image of Kodak? Claudia Pretelin, art historian, will explore this era of Kodak advertising and how it created the basis for the so-called snapshot aesthetic. Claudia Pretelin holds a BA in communications and received her MA and PhD in art history from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). For ten years, she worked as a personal assistant to the Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide. In 2011, she was awarded a fellowship from the Mexican National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT) in support of her continuing research in Kodak advertising at the George Eastman Museum. She has worked for different museums, foundations, and photo collections in Mexico City, including the Fotoseptiembre Festival in 1999 and the International Biennial of Photography in 2000. She is currently exhibitions associate at the Rochester Contemporary Art Center in Rochester, New York.
