Sean is joined by EuroZone stalwart Liam Grant to discuss how the planning for WUCC 2026 is going, how the Spring Tour tournaments went and what they expect to happen at Tom's Tourney this weekend. The rankings hadn't been updated when they spoke, so Liam fills the space by going on a couple of patented rants instead.
A wastewater treatment plant in North Clare was flooded one in every three days in the first eight months of 2024. An Environmental Protection Agency audit found that Uisce Éireann's sewerage treatment plant in Lahinch was not providing adequate or appropriate treatment. Between January 1st and August 14th this year, Lahinch's Wastewater Treatment Plant flooded on 76 dates out of 227, or 33% of days it was operating. The EPA also noted a significant number of emissions breaches at the plant. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by Fianna Fáil Councillor from Lahinch, Shane Talty and water quality activist, Liam Grant. Statement from Uisce Éireann: In relation to wastewater treatment in Lahinch, a feasibility study has been completed to look at the requirements and potential options to upgrade both the Lahinch Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) and Ennistymon WWTP. A new treatment plant to serve both the Lahinch and Ennistymon catchment is the preferred option. The project is currently at detailed design stage and will require several assessments (e.g. environmental, route and site selection, marine survey and modelling) as well as statutory approvals (planning, foreshore licence, EPA Licence review, wayleaves) and as such will take some time to complete. As with any significant infrastructure project, construction timelines and completion dates will be subject to a range of external factors. For this reason a commencement/completion date for the upgraded wastewater treatment plant at Lahinch/Ennistymon cannot be provided at this stage. It is expected that the initial scoping and design works for the upgraded plant at Lahinch/Ennistymon will be progressed through the current investment plan as a matter of priority, with the project to be progressed further in the subsequent investment periods subject to approvals. You will have heard Colum McGrath reference a very scary incident involving his children on the Breakfast Show on Monday. Colum took his daughter and youngest son, along with a friend of his daughter swimming in Lahinch over the weekend. However, what should have been a lovely day out at the beach for all concerned almost ended in unspeakable tragedy, only for the help of some alert surfers. It has raised the issue once again of lifeguards at Clare's beaches. To tell us what happened, Colum McGrath joined Alan Morrissey on Tuesday's Morning Focus. Alan was also joined on the line by Richard Brangwyn, a Lahinch Surf Instructor, Liam Grant, a Lahinch Green Party Councillor & Former Lifeguard and Ollie O'Flaherty, Owner of Ollie's Surf Academy in Lahinch.
The Clare chair of Sadaka, the Ireland Palestine Alliance, has criticised the US for perceived hypocrisy regarding its support for Israel. It comes ahead of a meeting of the UN General Assembly this afternoon, where an "immediate humanitarian ceasfire" is set to be discussed. As the bombardment of Gaza continues, the World Health Organisation is pleading with Israel to spare the territory's 11 remaining hospitals. Just 66 days ago, the total number of functional health facilities in Gaza stood at 36, meaning less than a third remain. More than 18,200 Palestinians have been killed since October 7th as a result of the bombardment and the UN World Food Programme has estimated that half the population is currently starving. Following a joint motion put forward by Councillors Donna McGettigan and Liam Grant at last night's meeting of Clare County Council, the local authority has endorsed calls for a trade embargo on Israeli goods as well as an immediate humanitarian ceasefire. Lahinch Green Party Councillor Grant believes even when problems exist overseas, their solutions can be rooted in community action. The 193-member UN General Assembly will meet today to discuss an "immediate humanitarian ceasefire" and will most likely pass a draft resolution with similar wording to the one which was vetoed by the US in the Security Council last week. Today's vote will not have no veto option and while General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding, they have been known to put pressure on governments. Chair of Sadaka, the Ireland Palestine Alliance, Kilmaley native Eamon Meehan says it defies logic for the US to condemn the actions of Russia in Ukraine but support those of Israel in Gaza.

A North Clare Councillor claims the safety of local communities is under imminient threat due to government inaction. It follows a road traffic colission in Lisdoonvarna yesterday, in which the services of on call first responders from Ennistymon station where required to cut a bus driver from his vehicle. Ennistymon Fire Station is one of 100 closed today as part of nationwide industrial action from crew members in there bid to secure improved pay & working conditions. Former retained firefighter & Lahinch based Green Party Councillor, Liam Grant has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan that the government will cause public outcry unless immediate action is taken to resolve the dispute.
A West Clare Councillor says loopholes in the new short-term let register need to be ironed out. Cabinet yesterday approved new legislation which requires all short-term lets providing accommodation in periods of up to 21 days to register with Fáilte Ireland. Properties will be required to have the appropriate planning permission and can be fined a fixed payment of €300 if found to be operating without a registration number. Kilkee Fianna Fáil Councillor, Cillian Murphy, and Lahinch Green Party Councillor, Liam Grant, have been speaking to Clare FM's Morning Focus.
