Ramit Sethi of I Will Teach You To Be Rich talks to Drew and Amanda, a married couple earning around $167,000 a year with a net worth of over $800,000. Read Online“Rabbi, when did you get here?” Jesus answered them and said, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled. Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him the Father, God, has set his seal.” John 6:26–27The crowd desired one thing, but Jesus desired another. This reality is common to us all. Earlier in this chapter from John's Gospel, Jesus miraculously fed 5,000 men—not counting the women and children—with five barley loaves and two fish. The crowd was so ecstatic that they wanted to carry Jesus off and crown Him king. Jesus, however, had no desire to be an earthly king, so He withdrew to a mountain to be alone. The next morning, when the crowd discovered Jesus had left, they searched for Him and found Him in Capernaum with the Twelve. When they found Him, they asked, “Rabbi, when did you get here?” Jesus' response revealed their true motivation: “You are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled.” In other words, they desired another meal. Their interest in Jesus was superficial. In John's Gospel, Jesus' miracles are referred to as “signs.” These signs point to His divine Sonship and salvific mission, revealing Him as the source of eternal life. Jesus recognized that the people sought Him not because they sought spiritual understanding or insight into His divine nature, but solely for material satisfaction—another meal. The crowd desired physical food, but Jesus desired to give them spiritual nourishment to strengthen their faith so that they would believe and receive the eternal and superabundant treasures He came to bestow. Jesus then exhorted them to work for “food that endures for eternal life.” That “food” is their belief in Him, whom the Father sent to bring eternal life.We often find ourselves desiring the passing things of this world more than we desire God. It is natural, not sinful, to experience physical hunger and desire food. But if such desires become the driving force in our lives, then they become disordered. In addition to natural desires, our spiritual desires can also become misguided. For example, if we seek Jesus in prayer solely because we have a favor to ask of Him, then we are acting much like the crowd in today's Gospel, and Jesus' words to them would apply to us: “Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.”Our pursuit of Jesus must not be centered on our own ideas of what is best for us. Only God knows what is best. We must understand this and allow Him to redirect our desires to seek what is eternal. We must not only seek but also desire God's work in our lives. His greatest work is that we “believe in the one he sent.” We must desire faith in Jesus and His eternal plan, abandoning every superficial or misguided pursuit.Reflect today on what you desire most from your relationship with our Lord. If your ambitions are earthly and fleeting, look higher. Seek the eternal realities God wishes to bestow, and work to realign your desires toward those alone. God is aware of our natural needs and will provide for them according to His will when we prioritize understanding Him, His divine Sonship, and His mission. Learn from the crowd in today's Gospel and heed Jesus' gentle rebuke. Believe in the One the Father sent—Jesus, the Son of God—and all good and eternal things will be lavished upon you according to His will. My heavenly King, You desire to be the King of my life, directing my every action and controlling my every desire. I give all control to You, dear Lord, and ask that you redirect my every ambition and desire in accord with Your perfect will. American broadcasters and political pundits employ fear and anxiety concerning national and world affairs to persuade the Black community's political leanings and economic actions. It'd be better to compel us to unite our talents and knowledge towards the common needs in our local communities.  It'd be better to acknowledge the urgency of unity as a necessary component to address these collective interests.  Our unity and will to achieve, not our votes, are the greatest resources we have.Imploring political and governmental leaders before we solicit our own efforts is misleading guidance.  We do not need to panic in the wake of national or global turmoil if we have prepared our community.  And there is still time for us to redirect our energy towards a civic engagement that starts with what we do at home in rearing our children and keeping our communities safe and clean.  If you would like to engage with the podcast, submit your listener questions to info@NurahSpeaks.com.  Listeners can also learn more by visiting NurahSpeaks.com.You can follow Nurah Speaks on X, Instagram and Facebook @NurahSpeaks and subscribe to the channel on YouTube.

The Sunday of the Ladder reminds us that the Christian life is not a sprint, but a long obedience marked by small, repeated acts of faithfulness. St. John shows that the real struggle takes place in our thoughts, where healing begins with recognizing them and learning to turn back to Christ. Step by step, through endurance and humility, the heart is purified and made capable of peace. Sunday of the Ladder Winning the Battle of Thoughts In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Today the Church gives us St. John Climacus—St. John of the Ladder. And she gives him to us right here, in the middle of Great Lent. Not at the beginning, when everything feels fresh. Not at the end, when Pascha is in sight. But here. When we are a little tired. A little worn down. Maybe a little discouraged. And that is not accidental. Because St. John is not here to inspire us with dramatic moments. He is here to teach us how to keep going. St. John was a monk, writing for monks. And sometimes we hear that and think: "Well, that's not for me." But that's not how the Church reads him. The Church puts him in front of all of us and says: this is what the spiritual life looks like. Not because we are all called to live in monasteries—but because we are all called to be healed, to be purified, to be united to God. We are all, in that sense, spiritual athletes. And the Ladder is not a museum piece. It is a training manual. Now here is something we have to get clear right away. The Ladder is not a sprint, a quick transformation, or a series of glorious spiritual breakthroughs. It is a lifetime slog. Step by step. Fall, get up. Fall, get up again. No drama. No shortcuts. Just faithfulness. And this is where many people get discouraged. Because we want clarity, peace, and victory—and we want it quickly. But St. John shows us something different. The spiritual life is not built on big moments. It is built on small, repeated acts of faithfulness. So where does that struggle take place? Not primarily out there. Not in circumstances, other people, or events. But in here—in our thoughts. Think about your own experience. How much of your energy goes into replaying conversations, imagining arguments, worrying about what might happen, remembering what did happen, getting distracted in prayer, getting distracted in conversation—getting distracted, pulled away from what matters, from our responsibilities, from love. Most of our spiritual life is decided before we ever act—long before anyone else sees it—and often long before we notice it ourselves. At the level of thought. Now we need to say something very important. A thought is not a sin. Thoughts come. They arise. They pass through. You are not responsible for everything that appears in your mind. There are crazy people living within everyone's mind. No, you are not responsible for everything that appears in your mind—but you are responsible for what you do with it. Because the difference between peace and chaos often comes down to a very small moment: what do I do with this thought? Let me give you three very simple rules for dealing with intrusive thoughts. Not easy—but simple. Do not enter into conversation with them. When a bad thought comes, do not engage it, do not analyze it, do not argue with it, do not "just think about it for a second." Because once you start that conversation, you've already lost. Do not identify with them. Instead, you say: "This is not me. This is a thought passing through. This is normal. This happens all the time." That concept alone creates space. The resulting separation creates freedom. Redirect immediately. Don't wrestle—replace. Turn your attention to prayer, to a psalm, to something concrete, to crossing yourself, to saying "Lord, have mercy." Again and again. The teaching is clear—this is not where we need new insight. The difficulty is in doing it—this is where we need endurance. Because this is where the real work is. St. John says in Step 26 on discernment: "The beginning of salvation is the recognition of thoughts." Not controlling everything. Not fixing everything. Just recognizing—seeing thoughts clearly. Yes, that is where the healing of our minds—the salvation—begins. And most of us don't even get that far. Because we are already inside the thought, carried within it, buoyed along by the current of our emotions. We are already moving downstream, sometimes far downstream, before we even notice. In Step 4, speaking about obedience, St. John says: "Obedience is the burial of the will and the resurrection of humility." Now that sounds very monastic. But apply it here, to your life in the world. Every time you refuse a thought, every time you redirect, you are practicing obedience. You are saying: "I will not follow this. I will follow Christ." And that commitment does not happen once. It happens ten times, fifty times, a hundred times a day—quietly, unseen. Small victories that grow into a habit of victory. This is the Ladder. In Step 15, on purity, St. John says: "A pure mind sees things as they are." That's the goal. Not just avoiding bad thoughts—but becoming the kind of person whose perception has been healed. Because right now, our thoughts are not neutral. They are shaped by fear, pride, habit, passion—even something as simple as what we had for dinner last night. Please accept this: in our fallen state, we don't see reality clearly. We interpret everything through the distorted landscape of our minds—uneven, shadowed, and unstable. And the work of guarding our thoughts—slowly, patiently—allows Christ to begin to level that ground, so that what is crooked becomes straight and what is confused becomes clear. Not the clarity of desire or pride, but of Truth. Now, the fathers speak about this very strictly—especially in the monastery. And we might hear this and think: "Well, I'm not a monk." And that's true. But that does not mean the struggle is different. It means the context is different. As Metropolitan Saba has emphasized: the parish and the monastery are not competing paths. They are parallel paths. Same goal. Same healing. Same Christ. Different context. The struggle is the same. The setting is different. In the monastery, the structure supports watchfulness. In our lives, we have to build that structure ourselves—in our homes, our work, our friendships, through habits of sacrificial love, prayer, and worship. Let's be very clear about one more thing. You cannot drift up the Ladder. We don't expect strength without exercise or knowledge without study—but somehow we expect peace without discipline. Guarding your thoughts is work. Redirecting your attention is training. And this is why it feels like a slog. Because it is. It is the long, slow slog of our salvation. So what does this look like in practice? When you are replaying a conversation—stop. Do not continue. Distract yourself and focus on something else—something less destructive, something more useful. When anxiety starts spiraling—cut it early. Not later—early. Even a small, deliberate act of joy—something as simple as a change in expression—can give us enough freedom to return to the source of all joy. When you are standing in prayer and your mind wanders—don't chase it. Return. Immediately. Be comforted and instructed by their truth, and the way they connect you with the source of all truth. This is where endurance comes in—not in overpowering thoughts, but in returning again and again to what is good, what is beautiful, what is true. And now we come back to the image: the Ladder. You do not fall all at once. You do not rise all at once. You ascend—or descend—one thought at a time. Not in dramatic moments, but in quiet decisions, repeated daily over a lifetime. And this is the encouragement. If you feel like this is slow—it is. If you feel like this is repetitive—it is. If you feel like this is a slog—it is. But this is how we are healed. Not in flashes of glory, but in steady faithfulness. Because the Ladder is not climbed in monasteries alone. It is climbed in the hidden work of the heart. And when that work is done—even a little—we begin to live and to serve with clarity, with peace, and with joy. In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

In this second part of our conversation, Columbia University psychiatrist and researcher Ragy Girgis examines the deeper social patterns behind the rise of modern mass violence. The discussion looks at how isolation, cultural change, and the loss of meaningful roles have reshaped the psychological landscape for many young men. Drawing on data from large case studies, the episode explores the difference between clinical mental illness and broader social breakdown. The result is a difficult but necessary conversation about what has changed in modern society and what it may take to reverse the trend.Part 1: https://youtu.be/FiZT2NnJ3mYPATREON https://www.patreon.com/c/demystifysciPARADOX LOST PRE-SALE: https://buy.stripe.com/7sY7sKdoN5d29eUdYddEs0bHOMEBREW MUSIC - Check out our new album!Hard Copies (Vinyl): FREE SHIPPING https://demystifysci-shop.fourthwall.com/products/vinyl-lp-secretary-of-nature-everything-is-so-good-hereStreaming:https://secretaryofnature.bandcamp.com/album/everything-is-so-good-herePARADIGM DRIFThttps://demystifysci.com/paradigm-drift-show00:00 Go! 00:00:00 Violence, mental health, and social breakdown00:04:47 When modern mass violence began rising00:08:28 Environment, addiction, and the Rat Park insight00:13:45 Media, identity, and the cultural aesthetics of violence00:20:37 Masculinity, purpose, and social displacement00:29:07 Categories and patterns in mass violence data00:39:34 Psychological collapse and public attacks00:48:30 Isolation, media ecosystems, and cultural drivers00:57:30 Why current therapy models often miss men01:04:55 Cultural figures filling the guidance vacuum01:11:36 Alienation and the risk of ideological extremism01:17:01 Why common policy responses fall short01:21:26 Redirecting alienated young men toward purpose01:27:02 Recognizing the crisis and searching for solutions #mentalhealth #Psychology#humanbehavior #socialpsychology #ModernSociety#masculinity #MentalHealthCrisis#physicspodcast #philosophypodcast MERCH: Rock some DemystifySci gear : https://demystifysci-shop.fourthwall.com/AMAZON: Do your shopping through this link: https://amzn.to/3YyoT98DONATE: https://bit.ly/3wkPqaDSUBSTACK: https://substack.com/@UCqV4_7i9h1_V7hY48eZZSLw@demystifysci RSS: https://anchor.fm/s/2be66934/podcast/rssMAILING LIST: https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S SOCIAL: - Discord: https://discord.gg/MJzKT8CQub- Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/DemystifySci- Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/DemystifySci/- Twitter: https://twitter.com/DemystifySciMUSIC: -Shilo Delay: https://g.co/kgs/oty671

You'll learn why giving up is never the answer and what to do instead when a lesson falls apart, how front-loading tasks with explicit instructions prevents behavior problems before they start, and why collective punishment backfires and damages the relationships you've worked so hard to build. Dr. Anna also shares practical ways to connect with students in small moments throughout the day and explains how building a class narrative gives students a sense of shared purpose that makes everything, including behavior, better. Whether you're in your first year or your fifth, these strategies will help you move from simply managing behavior to building a classroom community where students feel safe, supported, and ready to learn. If you're a mom today, chances are you've asked yourself some version of this question: "Why does my child melt down over the smallest things; and what am I supposed to do in the moment?" You're not alone. Parents are overwhelmed by big emotions, unpredictable reactions, and advice that sounds good in theory but falls apart in real life. Being told to "use your words" in the middle of a meltdown rarely works. Ignoring behavior feels wrong. And consequences without connection often make things worse. What parents are really looking for are strategies that work in kitchens, cars, grocery stores, and bedrooms at bedtime, not just in parenting books. Let's talk about what actually helps children regulate their emotions, why it works, and how you can use it consistently in everyday moments. In today's episode of Equipped To Be Connie covers: How to Regulate Your Emotions, Relate to Your Child, So You Can Redirect Your Child. -->Behavior Is Communication, Not Defiance Before any strategy can help, parents need one stabilizing reframe. -->Big Emotions Are a Signal, Not a Character Flaw Emotional regulation always starts with the parent. -->A Dysregulated Parent Cannot Regulate a Dysregulated Child -->Relate Before You Redirect Connection is what opens the door to cooperation. -->Naming Feelings Helps the Brain Settle -->Redirect with Clear, Simple Expectations When emotions run high, less language is more effective. In this essential episode of the New Teacher Talk podcast, Dr. Anna delivers part three of her comprehensive four-part series on classroom behavior management, focusing on five transformative strategies that address the most common challenges faced by new and early-career teachers. Discover how to establish effective routines that serve as the "invisible scaffolding" of your classroom, moving beyond simply copying what works for others to creating intentional, age-appropriate systems aligned with your specific goals. Learn the strategic four-level voice system (class voice, small group voice, partner voice, and voice level zero) that removes ambiguity and establishes clear communication expectations throughout your instructional day. Dr. Anna tackles the self-defeating habit of making excuses for challenging classes, explaining why attributing difficulties to timing or circumstances leads to lowered expectations and acceptance of inappropriate behavior. She provides practical guidance on implementing consequences with confidence, helping teachers overcome reluctance to enforce boundaries while maintaining positive relationships with students. The episode concludes with insights on bringing authentic energy and passion to your teaching, regardless of your personality type, and understanding the powerful connection between teacher enthusiasm and student engagement. Each strategy includes concrete examples and immediately implementable techniques designed specifically for educators navigating the complexities of classroom management. Whether you're struggling with transitions, inconsistent student behavior, or maintaining engagement across multiple class sections, this episode delivers the practical, evidence-based approaches you need to transform your classroom management effectiveness. Getting Back in Your Hula-Hoop: Redirecting Worry Into What You Can Actually Control

Encouragementology

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 9, 2026 29:59

SHOW NOTES: On this show…we are getting back in our hula-hoop as we redirect worry into what we can actually control. Have you ever noticed how worry has a way of making itself very comfortable in your body? Like it doesn't just visit your thoughts, it moves in, rearranges the furniture, and tightens your shoulders while it's at it. I'm not talking about the big, dramatic worries that show up once in a while. I'm talking about the everyday kind. The background noise. The constant mental tabs you keep open that never fully close. What's interesting is how often we don't even call it worry. We call it being responsible. Being prepared. Being a good parent, partner, leader, or friend. We say things like, “I'm just thinking ahead,” or “I just care.” Meanwhile, our bodies are clenched, our minds are racing, and it feels like we're always on standby for something we can't quite name. Here's the picture that kept coming to mind for me. It's like standing in the middle of your own hula-hoop, but spending all your energy reaching outside of it. Trying to manage outcomes, predict reactions, and control situations that aren't actually yours to carry. And the more time we spend out there, the more drained we feel in here. So today, I want to look at worry from a few less popular angles. Not just whether it's helpful or unhelpful, but what it does to us, where it comes from, and what might happen if we gently brought our attention back into our own hula-hoop. Because when we focus on what we can actually work on, something shifts. We don't suddenly stop caring. We just stop carrying what was never ours to hold. Worry has a sneaky way of making itself feel productive. It shows up dressed as responsibility. As preparation. As being on top of things. And because of that, we rarely question it. We just assume that if we stop worrying, something important will slip through the cracks. But here's the thing. Worry isn't the same as action. And it definitely isn't the same as control. CHALLENGE: Notice when worry pulls you outside your hula-hoop. Each time it does, gently bring your attention back to what you can actually work on within yourself. Invest that energy in your growth and trust that you are becoming more capable than you realize. I Know YOU Can Do It!

As global powers double down on militarism and defense, Daniel Zoughbie argues that the most transformative force in the Middle East has always come from citizen diplomacy. A complex-systems scientist and diplomatic historian, Zoughbie joins Mark Labberton to explore how twelve U.S. presidents have "kicked the hornet's nest" of the modern Middle East. Drawing on his work in global health and his new book Kicking the Hornet's Nest: U.S. Foreign Policy in the Middle East from Truman to Trump, Zoughbie contrasts the view from refugee camps and microclinic networks with the view from the Oval Office, arguing that American security rests on a three-legged stool of defense, diplomacy, and development. He explains why Gerald Ford stands out as the lone president who truly leveraged diplomacy, how the Marshall Plan model of enlightened self-interest can guide policy now, and why nationalism, not mere economics, lies at the heart of Gaza's future. Throughout, he presses listeners toward "citizen diplomacy" that resists pride, militarism, and fatalism. Episode Highlights "We've constantly ignored diplomacy." " You don't have to be enemies with people to get them to do what is in their own self-interest." "You can build skyscrapers in Gaza. You can build the Four Seasons in Gaza and it's not going to work. You're just going to have another war until you address that core issue of nationalism." "These three Ds defense diplomacy development are the three legged stool of American security and we know how important diplomacy and development are." "From Truman to Trump, only one president, and that is Gerald Ford, surprisingly the only unelected president, gets this right." "Pride—national pride, the pride of any one individual—is toxic. It's toxic to the individual. It's toxic to the nation. It's toxic to the world." "Foreign policymaking is not just something for secretaries of state and those in power. All of us in a democracy have a role to play." He is the author of Kicking the Hornet's Nest: U.S. Foreign Policy in the Middle East from Truman to Trump and of Indecision Points: George W. Bush and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. His award-winning research has appeared in journals such as PLOS Medicine, Mayo Clinic Proceedings, and Social Science and Medicine. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of UC Berkeley, he studied at Oxford on a Marshall Scholarship and completed his doctorate there as a Weidenfeld Scholar. Show Notes Middle East Background and Microclinic Origins Daniel Zoughbie recalls visiting the Middle East as a child—"frankly horrified" by what he saw UC Berkeley protests over the Iraq War and post-9/11 U.S. policy in the region Metabolic disease and type 2 diabetes as an overlooked "greatest killer in the region." Neighbors in the West Bank sharing food, medicine, and blood-pressure cuffs—leads to the "micro clinic" concept Good health behaviors, like bad ones and even violence, can be contagious through social networks Social Networks, Anthropology, and Security Social anthropology, political science, and international relations Medical problems as simultaneously biological and sociological problems Understanding Middle East security demands attention to decisions "at the very bottom" as well as "the view from above" October 7 and 9/11 illustrate how small groups of people can "change the world with their decisions." Complex Systems and Foreign Policy Complexity is always increasing, and diplomacy and development exist to slow it down. Definition of "complex system": as one where many inputs produce outcomes that cannot be reduced to single causes. "We almost have a new law here, which is that complexity is always increasing in the universe. And the role of diplomacy and development, as I see it in international relations, is to slow things down. It's to stop complexity from advancing so that people have time to cool their tempers and to solve major security crises." Type 2 diabetes as a model for thinking about how city planning, economics, relationships, and habits interact He applies that lens to international relations: nations, leaders, institutions, and history form a "cascade of complexity." From Refugee Camps to Presidential Palaces George Shultz and Tony Blair: decision-makers as "real human beings," not abstractions Theological and ideological forces—such as certain apocalyptic readings of scripture—that shape U.S. foreign policy Gnosticism and eschatology within American right-wing Christianity Painstaking global health work on the ground and sweeping decisions made in Washington, Brussels, or New York Twelve Presidents and One Exception Kicking the Hornet's Nest: analysis of twelve presidents from Truman to Trump through the lens of Middle East decision-making Core claim: Only Gerald Ford truly rebalanced the three Ds of defense, diplomacy, and development. U.S. policy in the Levant: heavy reliance on militarism, coups, and covert actions while underinvesting in diplomacy and development Claim: "Far better alternatives were on the table" for every administration, yet consistently passed over. Gerald Ford, Kissinger, and the Path to Peace Daniel contends that the 1967 and 1973 wars were both preventable and nearly became global nuclear catastrophes. Ford inherits the presidency amid Watergate and national division, but keeps Henry Kissinger at State. Ford presses Israel and Egypt toward serious negotiations, empowering Kissinger's shuttle diplomacy and personal ties. A sharply worded letter threatening to "reconsider" the U.S.–Israel relationship Ford's diplomacy and the development of Camp David and the enduring Egypt–Israel peace based on "land for peace." Pride, Personality, and Presidential Failure Did Ford's temperament keep him from making himself the center of the story? In contrast, many presidents and other leaders write themselves "thickly" into the narrative of the conflict. Pride—personal and national—as a toxic force that repeatedly undermines U.S. policy The Iraq War and democracy-promotion agenda and the self-defeating nature of moralistic, militarized crusades Marshall Plan and Enlightened Self-Interest George Marshall and harsh punishment after World War I helped produce Nazi Germany The Marshall Plan models an "enlightened way of viewing the American self-interest": rebuilding Europe and Japan to secure U.S. security. He contrasts that with the neglect of the Levant, where aid and institution-building never matched military activism. Marshall's genius lies in locating the intersection between others' deepest needs and American capabilities. Militarism, Iran, and Nuclear Risk Recent U.S.–Israel–Iran confrontation as an "extremely dangerous moment"—with 60 percent enriched uranium unaccounted for JCPOA as an imperfect but effective diplomatic achievement, but dismantled in favor of militarism Claim: Bombing Iran scattered nuclear material and increased complexity rather than reducing the threat. He warns that one nuclear device could be delivered by low-tech means—a boat or helicopter—endangering civilians and U.S. forces in the Gulf. The only realistic path forward: renewed multilateral diplomacy between U.S., Israel, Iran, Russia, China, Pakistan, India, and regional actors Ethical Realism and Max Weber "Ethical realism"—Max Weber's distinction between the ethic of the gospel and the ethic of responsibility Statespeople bear responsibility for using force, yet the greatest can still say "here I stand and I can do no other." Claim: True leadership seeks a higher ethic where national interest aligns with genuine concern for others. Gaza, Nationalism, and Two States Welcoming the end of active war between Israel and Hamas and critiquing reconstruction plans that ignore politics Conflict is fundamentally nationalist: a struggle for self-determination by both Jewish and Palestinian peoples Claim: Economic development without a credible political horizon will not prevent "another October 7th and another terrible war." In his view, only partition of mandatory Palestine into two states can meet legitimate self-determination claims. For example, "You can build skyscrapers in Gaza… and it's not going to work" without addressing nationalism. Citizen Diplomacy and a Better Way Foreign policy is not only the work of secretaries of state; democratic citizens have responsibilities. American University of Beirut and the Gaza Baptist Hospital as fruits of citizen diplomacy Claim: Educational and medical institutions can change lives more profoundly and durably than military campaigns. Redirecting resources from bombs to universities and hospitals to reduce the need for future military interventions An invitation to citizen diplomacy: informed voting, sustained attention, and creative engagement for a more just peace Production Credits Conversing is produced and distributed in partnership with Comment Magazine and Fuller Seminary.

From Drug Runner to $60M Exit: A Redemption Story   Most of us never stop to think how much our past — the pain, the wounds, the survival patterns — shape our future. For Jason Sisneros, that past meant delivering drugs at age 12, becoming a violent debt collector at 16, and nearly losing his life in a knife fight. But his story didn't end there. He rebuilt himself, learned directly from legends like Tony Robbins and Keith Cunningham, and eventually achieved a $60 million exit.   In this episode of Richer Soul, Jason shares the hard-won wisdom he's gathered along the way — wisdom that goes far beyond business. It's about redemption, freedom, and creating a custom-tailored life.   Key Insights & Reflections: Your past doesn't define your future. Jason's childhood trauma and early involvement in crime could have set his destiny. Instead, he chose to break the cycle for his son. Reflection: What generational patterns are you committed to ending Entrepreneurship is a self-development journey. Businesses reflect their owners. If you bring unhealed wounds into your company, they will magnify. If you do the inner work, your business becomes a vessel for growth. Reflection: What does your business mirror back to you about yourself Everybody exits — how matters. Jason explains the three types of exits: involuntary, dictated, and custom-tailored. Only the last one creates freedom. Reflection: What would a “custom-tailored exit” look like for your life or business? Profit is a tool for freedom, not vanity. Living for cars, jets, and hype marketing leaves you trapped. Redirecting profits toward a “freedom account” creates choices that last. Reflection: Are your financial decisions moving you toward freedom — or away from it? Wisdom outlasts trends. Fads come and go, but principles endure. Jason believes true success is rooted in servant leadership, ethical business, and responsibility. Reflection: What timeless principle can you anchor your decisions in today? Redefine gratification, don't delay it. True satisfaction comes not from consumption, but from aligning your life with what matters most. Reflection: What would it mean to redefine what “gratification” looks like for you?   Jason's Money Lessons: Jason grew up believing money belonged only to the rich — and that breaking the law was a valid way to get it. That belief led him into crime until a near-death experience forced him to change. Over time, he learned that money is simply a tool — one that either enslaves or frees, depending on the choices you make.   Key Takeaway: Success isn't about the number on your exit. It's about who you become along the way, and whether your business serves as a path to freedom, integrity, and impact.   About Jason Sisneros: Jason Sisneros is a serial entrepreneur, philanthropist, and advocate for business owners. From his early struggles and near-death experience, he rebuilt his life, became a top speaker for Tony Robbins, and went on to build and exit multiple companies — including a $60 million exit. Today, through his platform Built to Exit, he helps business owners design custom-tailored strategies that create both wealth and freedom.   Links: YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@BuiltToExit Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jason.sisneros.1 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thejasonsisneros LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jason-sisneros/ X: https://twitter.com/thejsisneros?lang=en B2X Website: https://builttoexit.biz/about/ #RicherSoul #JasonSisneros #RedemptionStory #EntrepreneurJourney #CustomTailoredLife #BusinessExit #Entrepreneurship #BusinessGrowth #ProfitFirst #FreedomOverFortune #MindsetShift #TraumaToTriumph #LifeOnPurpose #ServantLeadership #LegacyBuilding   Watch the full episode on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@richersoul Richer Soul Life Beyond Money. Send me a messageWhen people think about tackling the climate crisis, they often talk about energy, food, or transport. But what about money? In this week's episode of Climate Confident, I sat down with Scott Ryan, founder and CEO of Investature, to unpack one of the biggest blind spots in corporate climate strategies, the financial supply chain.Scott argues that pensions, retirement savings, and even our everyday bank accounts may be the largest single drivers of greenhouse gas emissions for many organisations, often dwarfing their direct operations and traditional Scope 3 supply chains. He explained how most retirement funds are still heavily invested in fossil fuels and high-pollution industries, even though those assets will almost certainly become stranded as the world pushes for net zero. The numbers are staggering. Globally, pensions account for over $100 trillion. Redirecting just 1% of that towards climate solutions would close a third of the climate finance gap, enough to massively accelerate the transition in energy, mobility, agriculture, and adaptation. Yet most companies and individuals remain unaware of the scale of this leverage. We explored why financial supply chains have been overlooked in frameworks like TCFD and GRI, and why leading employers are now beginning to integrate sustainable retirement options into their benefits. Scott also shared practical steps individuals can take, such as shifting to green banks, exploring climate-positive ETFs, or pushing employers to offer sustainable pension plans. This is not just about risk management; it's about turning finance into a genuine engine for climate solutions. If you've ever wondered how your savings could work for or against the planet, this episode will give you a fresh lens on climate action.Podcast supportersI'd like to sincerely thank this podcast's amazing subscribers: Ben Gross Jerry Sweeney Andreas Werner Stephen Carroll Roger Arnold And remember you too can Subscribe to the Podcast - it is really easy and hugely important as it will enable me to continue to create more excellent Climate Confident episodes like this one, as well as give you access to the entire back catalog of Climate Confident episodes.ContactIf you have any comments/suggestions or questions for the podcast - get in touch via direct message on Twitter/LinkedIn. Ep. 337 - How to Guard Against the Temptations of the World

The Living Waters Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 8, 2025 61:01 Transcription Available

Temptation is as constant and real as gravity—a daily battle that every believer faces. Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar remind Christians that they are never alone in this struggle, and the enemy wants them to believe otherwise. Isolation is one of Satan's strongest tools, but God calls believers to live in the light and walk in community. When one believer confesses a struggle, another can offer encouragement, reminding them that being tempted is part of the Christian journey. A fear of the Lord becomes a shield against compromise. Every time Jesus was tempted, He responded with Scripture. In the same way, when believers store the Word in their hearts, the Holy Spirit brings it to mind at crucial moments, arming them with truth that weakens the power of temptation.Prayer is to be ongoing. Even Elijah, who shared the same human nature, prayed earnestly and witnessed the power of God. The model of praying to be delivered from temptation and evil is not optional—it is essential. Spiritual discipline plays a critical role in a believer's strength. Fasting, once a common practice in the early church, has been overlooked by many today. In avoiding legalism, many have also rejected discipline, but Scripture teaches that while salvation is a gift of grace, Christians are created for good works. Discipline, when motivated by love for God, helps conform believers to the image of Christ.Resisting temptation is not about earning favor, but about growing in Christlikeness. God has predestined His people to be conformed to His Son, and resistance is a part of that transformation. Humility is key—recognizing that apart from God, nothing is deserved but judgment. Gratitude flows from this awareness. The best way to flee temptation is to have somewhere better to run. Redirecting desires toward Christ changes the battle entirely. Believers are the reward of Jesus's obedience, and understanding His love is stronger than any willpower.Standing strong also means running with the right people. Christians grow when they walk with others who are running the race well. Community, scripture, prayer, evangelism, and fellowship all strengthen the soul. Ephesians teaches that the real battle is spiritual and that the armor of God is essential. Believers must be aware of their weaknesses, seek counsel, pursue repentance, and embrace accountability. Like Joseph before Potiphar's wife, believers must refuse, reason, resist—and then run. Those who believe they cannot fall are often the first to do so. Temptation is real, but so is the strength found in Christ.Send us a textThanks for listening!
