As this podcast lands, it's 75 years to the day since the first 'God slot' on the BBC Light Programme. It was first called Five to Ten, and is now Pause for Thought on BBC Radio 2. Podcast host Paul has been Pausing for Thought for over a decade, with Chris Evans, Zoe Ball and Scott Mills, and was recently asked to present a history of Pause for Thought to a roomful of Pause for Thoughters, the Radio 2 boss, and today's Breakfast Show host Scott Mills. So a version of that is on this episode, with some golden oldie clips, including Ray Moore and Derek Jameson. And even a bit of Steve Wright, because why not. It's a mini-sode ahead of our Christmas special, so we look ahead to that, with a little more info on Paul's upcoming Radio 4 drama about the first radio drama, The Truth About Phyllis Twigg. The companion episode will be next time on the podcast, but for now there's info on where in London you can go to listen to the story version of that original radio drama - ME London, the hotel on the site of Marconi House and the BBC's first studio. You can go this December, and listen to our exclusive recording, by, Paul, Carina Saner (Phyllis' great-granddaughter) and Flora Saner (Phyllis' great-great-granddaughter). ...And if you can't make it to London, we'll play it for you on the next episode. A little too on our moment-by-moment timeline of British broadcasting - we're in November 1923 and it's GK Chesterton from Manchester, a Welsh talk from Wales, the first radio novel, and some comments in the Radio Times on the benefits of radio opera. (This WAS going to be an episode about the first BBC Armistice broadcast - but with all the above to tell more immediately, I decided to hold back the Armistice episode till the New Year. I know - it's not November - but we have a timeline to follow. In early 2026) SHOWNOTES: Random Radio Jottings' blog post on Pause for Thought's history - with clips! https://andywalmsley.blogspot.com/2020/04/pause-for-thought.html ME London hotel host our recording of The Truth about Father Christmas, Dec 2025 only! Kate Lefko Everett from the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation speaks to Lester Kiewit about the newly released 2025 South African Reconciliation Barometer, the country’s longest running survey tracking reconciliation, trust, social cohesion, and national identity. The findings show a nation that remains democratically resilient but deeply fragile, with very low trust in political leaders and institutions, persistent economic hardship, and complex shifts in attitudes toward policy, identity, and social cohesion. She explains the public’s scepticism toward political leadership, why support for the GNU’s policy agenda remains comparatively stronger, and what the data signals for the road ahead as the country moves toward the 2026 2027 local government elections. Singapore’s EV conversation often centres on passenger cars, but the country’s real electrification challenge lies in vans, trucks, and industrial fleets that keep the economy moving. As demand surges, existing charging infrastructure falls short. Australia is now enforcing a world-first ban on social media accounts for anyone under 16, compelling platforms like Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat to verify ages and remove underage users. The move has sparked a global conversation about online harms, parental responsibility, and how far governments should go in regulating digital spaces for young people. As countries watch to see what works and what doesn’t, Singapore faces its own questions about balancing youth safety, privacy and practical enforcement. Professor Gemma Calvert, Neuroscientist and Professor of Marketing at Nanyang Business School, and Deputy Director of NTU’s Centre for Marketing Technologies joins the Breakfast Show to unpack what Australia’s approach signals about the evolving conversation around youth and technology, and what insights other countries may take from this momentSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Department of Transport is set to extend the validity of driving licences from five to eight years, a move long sought by South Africans frustrated with long queues, repeated system failures, and delays at licensing centres, while progress is also being made on a digital driving licence that could form part of the MyMzansi platform. Stefanie Fick, executive director of the accountability division of the Organisation for Undoing Tax Abuse, speaks to Lester Kiewit about how the extension will save motorists time and money, reduce pressure on the country’s unreliable licence-printing system, and the broader context of repeated delays by previous transport ministers, highlighting why this reform is seen as long overdue. With premiums for private health insurance rising sharply and medical bills climbing faster than wages, the Ministry of Health is rolling out major changes to Integrated Shield Plan riders from April 2026. New riders will no longer cover minimum deductibles, co-payment caps will double, and policyholders will take on a larger share of their bills, even as annual premiums are expected to fall by about 30 per cent. What do these shifts mean for Singaporeans trying to balance affordability with adequate protection? Vincent Gan, Chartered Financial Consultant and Chartered Life Underwriter with 20 years experience in the financial services industry, joins the Breakfast Show to unpack how these reforms may shape everyday decisions around hospital choice, budgeting, and long-term healthcare planning.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
