Budget 2026 continues to expand support for families through measures such as Child LifeSG credits and enhanced preschool and student-care subsidies, continuing efforts to ease the financial burden of raising children. But some argue that while these schemes reduce upfront costs, they may not address the longer-term income and career penalties associated with caregiving. So, are current family policies targeting the right constraints? And could more structural forms of support, including experimentation with caregiving compensation, influence decisions around family formation? Dr Kalpana Vignehsa, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Policy Studies at the National University of Singapore, joins the Breakfast Show to unpack what a deeper rethink of family policy might look like amid mounting demographic pressures. When Georgina Smith last spoke to Lester Kiewit on 15 January, the Relay Mermaids were on standby, waiting for a narrow weather window to attempt their 72 kilometre open ocean swim from Fish Hoek around Cape Point to Hout Bay. After repeated delays due to unfavourable winds and swell, the team finally launched this past weekend and completed the full distance in an unratified time of 23 hours 59 minutes 59 seconds. Smith joined Lester again to reflect on the physical and mental endurance required to push through icy Atlantic waters in only costumes, caps and goggles, rotating alongside Shoneé Cornelissen, Katherine Persson and Eva Dirksen through the night. The near 24 hour finish follows weeks of careful weather monitoring, with the swim dedicated to raising funds for the Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players’ Fund in support of 13 year old Leandro Jantjies, the organisation’s youngest recipient, who now requires lifelong care following a catastrophic rugby injury. We officially launched the Ricki-Lee & Tim breakfast show on Nova 96.9 and honestly, we're still processing it. Tim laid down his rules for the show including his unhinged take on the sock-shoe situation—if you go sock shoe, sock shoe instead of sock sock, shoe shoe, he thinks you're nuts (and also don't buy chicken, apparently). Prime Minister Albo called in to wish us luck, confirmed Pauline Hanson will never be PM, roasted David Littleproud for looking like a hostage, and revealed his Valentine's Day plans. We dove into Glossy's breaking down all the Taylor Swift easter eggs hidden in her Opalite video because of course we did. Spun the Wheel for our first breakfast game—the Whisper Challenge—and now we're asking you: how do you reckon we went?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This Week on the Breakfast Show, Dave and the team celebrate your weird and wonderful quirks in "Is It Weird That" and celebrate the weird smells that you love, including a watch-strap admission from listener Nick..They also try hot Dr. Pepper on air, try to decipher one of the worst "It Happened, But We'll Never Speak of It Again" tales, and it's a body part and Elton John themed Smash, after the singer was spotted wearing a necklace made of his old kneecaps...
