Craig joins Russell and Alan to talk about his newest Longmire mystery, “Hell and Back,” and his career writing about the fictional Absaroka County and the beloved Longmire gang.

Craig Johnson is a Wyoming rancher and a best-selling international author who writes westerns for people who may not normally read westerns – the fabulously popular Walt Longmire mystery series that has also been turned into a top rating six season Netflix show of the same name. The books and the show closely reflect the community and the landscape Craig calls home. Hi there, I'm your host Jenny Wheeler, and in today's Binge Reading episode Craig talks about the work of creating a country sheriff who is a thoroughly decent man, the magic draw of the annual Longmire Days in nearby Buffalo, and how he is re-reading Ernest Hemingway at the moment, for a very special purpose. We have got three e-books of Next to Last Stand, the latest Longmire book, for three lucky readers in our mysteries giveaway. Don't miss out. Enter today for a chance to win! But now, here's Craig. Craig Johnson - Creator of beloved Walt Longmire series Jenny Wheeler: Hello there Craig, and welcome to the show. It's so good to have you with us. Craig Johnson: It's wonderful to be here, and thank you for getting up so early and making this so convenient for me to be in the middle of the afternoon. Jenny Wheeler: You have got fifteen books and a six season Netflix series. This fellow Longmire has developed a life of its own, hasn't he? We are talking about the most recent book today, Next to Last Stand, but Walt Longmire's life is very much your life, isn't it? I would like our listeners to get an idea of where you are and how you are living, because it does parallel Walt's life very closely. You have written a series about a Wyoming sheriff, and you are a Wyoming rancher. Give us a picture of where you are and how your day unfolds. Craig Johnson: There are some similarities like that, but there are also some differences. Walt is a full-time sheriff, that's a full-time job. It is an elected law enforcement job. Sheriffs are county law enforcers who have to go out like politicians and get votes, and so Walt not only is a police officer, he's also a politician. The reason I chose that particular line of work was that it made him immediately answerable to the community. That is what a lot of the books are about. Introducing author Craig Johnson They are about the community. It is a very thin veneer of civilization here in Wyoming. At the ranch where I live, that I built myself, the nearest town to us has a population of 25. There aren't very many people, so whenever Judy, my wife, and I go out on tour there are only 23 people in Ucross. It would be a great time to come in and rob the place. We are in Johnson County, which is not named for me, I want to be clear about that. It's an isolated lifestyle, I suppose, but I find that to be very conducive to the writing process. Whenever I'm around a bunch of other authors a...

My Mom and I flew out to Billings, MT on Tuesday August 14th and rented a car for a week to go explore the Great Out West. We visited the Battle of Little Big Horn on the first day and ended up in Buffalo, WY by the second night just missing Longmire Days which was the previous weekend. We then drove through the beautiful country side into Cody, WY by the third day and took in a rodeo of coarse. Our fourth day landed us in Jackson Hole, WY after driving through half of beautiful Yellowstone and Grand Tetons National Parks. We ended up crashing out there for a couple nights as Mom came down with pneumonia. After she stared to feel a little better, we continued on back north through the Tetons and Yellowstone checking out Old Faithful and running with the buffalo. We then had a close call as we coasted down Bear Tooth Pass in the dark and almost on fumes but found gas and a nice hotel in Red Lodge, MT for our sixth night on the road. Then as our vacation time wound down, we headed back to Billings to catch a flight home on the 21st. We fell in love with the Rocky Mountains and the romance of all the rich history of the land. We met some wonderful people and had amazing mother/daughter bonding time. I feel so lucky to share this experience with my mom.....pneumonia and all.www.road-grime.com

This week, we can report that Canada's National Parks ARE. [spp-timestamp time="26:08"] While there are a lot of restrictions that greatly limit where you can take your dog in the US National Parks, Canada welcomes dogs and only requires that they be on a six-foot leash. On our recent trip to Banff National Park in Alberta, we saw all sorts of people and their dogs enjoying all parts of the park and its many trails. Banff even had a fenced in off-leash area for you to let your dog run free ! We even saw one couple who were kayaking in Lake Louise…. With their poodle, no less! Mike took a photo of that kayaking pooch and will post it with the shownotes for this episode at Roadtreking-dot-com-slash-146. We noticed the same dog-friendliness last year at the Bruce Peninsula National Park near Tobermore, Ontario. Lots of people and lots of dogs. Everyone is happy. This year is a particularly good time to visit a Canadian National Park. As Canada celebrates its 150th anniversary, entry into al of the national parks there is free – for everyone. So head on up north. You and your dog will enjoy Canada's beautiful National Parks just as much as Mike and I – and Bo. It's RV shopping season and for a lot of shoppers, finding used RVs can be a daunting experience, especially for the high demand Class B campervan style motorhomes. That's what we talk about this week in our interview of the week. Plus your RV questions, RV tips involving travel, technology and your pets, news of the week and a great off the beaten path report all coming up in this episode of The RV Lifestyle Podcast. [spp-player]  Complete shownotes for Episode 122 of the Roadtreking RV Lifestyle Podcast JENNIFER'S TIP OF THE WEEK This is the time of year when people are shopping and buying their RVs. That means they are also buying the things they need for that RV, like pots and pans and plates and silverware. [spp-timestamp time="7:40"] When I meet new RVers, one of the first questions I usually get is how much of all that do need to bring and store in the RV? The answer is not as much as you may think. How much entertaining do you plan to do? By that, I mean how often will you have people in your RV for dinner or lunch? Mike and I travel with four placesettings. That's it. Just four. Same with glasses and cutlery. By the way, we often of paper plates and disposable cups, especially on winter campouts. Why make more work and spend all your time washing dishes? As far as pots and pans goes. That depends on your cooking style and how much food preparation you plan to do. We grill out as much as possible. All I have in our RV is a fry pan and a sauce pan. Now if you love Italian cooking, you'll need something for pasta. You may want to steam your veggies and will need something for that. But our style is fast and easy. We prepare and freeze meals in advance that just need to be thawed. Or, as I said, we cook out on a grill. Again, we all have different RVing styles. Ours is keep it simple…less is always best and do whatever we can to make cleanup as easy as possible. After all, RVing is supposed to be a break from the routine. How about you? I'm interested in hearing about your RV style and tips and suggestions for the RV lifestyle. You can use the “Leave Voicemail” link at Roadtreking.com. Just click it and then use the built-in microphone on your computer or mobile devise to record a message to me. You can do it over as many times as you want, until you are satisfied. And then you just click a button and it comes right to my email inbox. I love hearing from you! Jennifer's tip of the week is brought to you by T RadPower Bikes (www.RadPowerBikes.com_… an electric bike manufacturer offering direct to consumer pricing on powerful premium electric bikes. LISTENER QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK: Terri asks about getting a better cellular signal inside her RV. Mike suggests a cellphone booster.  [spp-timestamp time="12:09"] The one Mike uses is the the  Professional Grade weBoost Drive 4G-X + RV Trucker Essentials Kit – 470510-RV. It comes with a big external antenna. It is most powerful in-vehicle booster certified in the US and Canada and enhances 4G LTE, as well as 3G and 2G network signals, up to 32x. That is probably overkill for most RVers at more than $500. Wilson makes much more affordable ones for single devices starting at around $100. Phil asks Mike and Jen about the gravity chair/loungers they take with them in their Roadtrek CS Adventurous XL. [spp-timestamp time="15:52"] The brand we use is the Best Choice brand. They are available on Amazon at $64.99 for a set of two. When we bought them we found them at a Kmart in Missouri on sale for about the same price. And listener Debbie reacts to last week's travel suggestion for fans of the Sheriff Longmire novels and TV show and plans for Longmire Days in Wyoming this summer. The dates haven't been set yet but should be in June or early July. [spp-timestamp time="19:46"]
