What happens when grief becomes the catalyst for finally answering a lifelong creative calling? In episode 247 of Joy Found Here, Celeste Fenton shares how losing her husband in 2020 forced her to confront who she was beyond educator, wife, and mother. At 60+, she stopped making excuses and started writing the suspense romance series that had been "chirping" at her for decades. Her journey to self-published author isn't just about books—it's about giving yourself permission to fail, discover who you are, and step out of the "shadow of the but."In This Episode, You Will Learn:(05:53) Leaving a Difficult Childhood Behind(11:07) Divorce, Single Parenthood, and Going Back to School(14:27) The Loss That Changed Everything(14:29) Starting to Write at 60+(15:53) Sharing Her Terrible First Draft(17:59) Finding Her Identity Through Writing(23:16) The Solo Trip to Maine That Sparked It All(40:27) Creating Gabby Hart: A Messy Midlife Heroine(46:26) Shifting from Success to Meaning(49:26) Inspiring Other Women to Pursue Their PassionsCeleste Fenton spent 30 years as an educator and director in adult and continuing education, earning her degrees from Kansas State University and the University of South Florida. After growing up in a difficult household north of Tampa and navigating divorce as a single parent, she returned to school for her master's degree and built a fulfilling career in higher education. She remarried in 1997 to a fellow educator, but when her husband unexpectedly passed away in 2020, that loss became a catalyst. At 60+, grieving and searching for her identity beyond the roles of wife, mother, and educator, Celeste finally answered the creative calling that had been "chirping" at her for decades and began writing seriously in 2021.In this episode, Celeste opens up about the vulnerable process of writing her first draft and discovering parts of herself she hadn't consciously acknowledged. Drawing inspiration from a solo trip to Maine, she created her "Mysteries of a Heart" suspense romance series featuring Gabby Hart—a midlife protagonist navigating family secrets, romance, and mystery. With two published books, "Lost Heart in King Manor" and "Captive Heart at Brantmar Castle," and a third coming in 2026, Celeste's purpose has shifted from seeking success to inspiring others. She now speaks to women's groups about stepping out of the "shadow of the but" and giving yourself permission to try, fail, and discover who you are. Her message is clear: it's never too late to answer the call that's been waiting for you.Connect with Celeste Fenton:ThreadsLinkedInInstagramFacebookGet Celeste's books!Let's Connect:WebsiteInstagram Hosted on Acast. What happens in Sherlock Holmes' world when the master detective is away and Dr. Watson is kidnapped? In this episode, we sit down with author Jeri Westerson to do a deep dive into her An Irregular Detective Mystery series, a thrilling and historically rich take on the Victorian detective genre. When Dr. Watson goes missing, it's up to Tim Badger, a former Baker Street Irregular, and his partner, the scientifically-minded Ben Watson (no relation!), to solve a case that could make or break their fledgling detective agency.Join us as we explore the foggy streets of Victorian London and beyond with Jeri Westerson, who shares the inspiration behind her unique characters. We discuss how her stories exist as Sherlock Holmes pastiche books, while still carving out their own distinct identity. This interview serves as a fascinating The Misplaced Physician review, detailing the plot where Badger and Watson must unravel cryptic clues left in the untold tales of the Sherlock Holmes canon to save their hero. We also explore the core themes of the Tim Badger and Ben Watson series, including the rigid class differences of the era and the challenges faced by our working-class heroes. Jeri explains the fascinating historical accuracy she weaves into her novels, from the shocking reality of mummy unwrapping parties to the surprising efficiency of 12-times-a-day mail delivery in 1895. A major focus is the character of Miss Ellsie Moira Littleton, a determined and educated Victorian era female journalist modeled on real-life reporters of the day, like Nellie Bly. Finally, Jeri gives us a sneak peek into the future of the series, including the upcoming books "The Vampire Client" and "The Magician's Misadventure."About Our Guest:Jeri Westerson is the author of the critically acclaimed "An Irregular Detective Mystery" series. Episode 565 - Lee Clark - Matthew Paine Mystery Series - Including the upcoming book Killer ConvergenceLee Clark is the author of the Matthew Paine Mystery series of classic murder mystery novels, including Dead Spots, Prefer Death, MIA, Christmas Punch, Iced, Forbidden Relics, and the upcoming Killer Convergence to be released in the spring of 2025. According to multiple reviews across the book series on goodreads and Amazon, Clark "writes like Agatha Christie," and is reminiscent of Margaret Maron and Louise Penny. A North Carolina native, Clark grew up in Raleigh with family roots in Virginia. An admitted chocoholic and coffeeholic, Lee Clark still resides in North Carolina with spouse, two mostly grown children who are in and out, and a dwindling petting zoo of geriatric dogs and cats.  Lee Clark attended Campbell University, obtained a degree in Journalism from East Carolina University, and then a Master's in Technical Communication from North Carolina State University. Following a twenty year career in the software development industry of corporate America at IBM, Clark turned to writing fiction in 2021 with the release of Dead Spots, the first in the Matthew Paine Mystery series. The Matthew Paine character is a beloved character to the author. Though a fictional character, Matthew was inspired by two very important men in the author's life, brother Sean and son Will. Both will catch glimpses of themselves in the character and identify with some of Matthew's struggles.  https://cypressrivermedia.com/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

NL Holmes - Flowers of Evil: Hani's Daughter Mystery Series Book 1. This is episode 743 of Teaching Learning Leading K12.  N.L. Holmes is an award-winning novelist embarking on another significant career phase. Prior to taking up the power of writing and using this pen name, she was an accomplished archaeologist and teacher for 25 years. Early in her career, she served as a nun for two decades. In between, she was an artist and antiques dealer. Yes, she has lived an interesting life and the sum of her experiences informs and inspires her writings today. Born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, she attended The University of Texas in the honors program but dropped out midway to enter into the antiques business. Two years later, she entered the Discalced Carmelite convent in Texas. She left the convent 20 years later and returned to school to get her B.A. in Classical Studies. Holmes, who earned her doctorate in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology from Bryn Mawr College despite an offer to attend Princeton, has excavated in Greece and Israel, and also did archaeological artwork for excavations from Lebanon. She taught ancient history and humanities at Stockton University in New Jersey and the University of South Florida for many years.  Her ten published novels embrace two series of historical fiction: the Lord Hani Mysteries, set in the Egypt of Akhenaten, and the Empire at Twilight series, featuring life in the Hittite Empire in the 13th century BCE. The inspiration for her Bronze Age novels came with an assignment she gave to her students one day: Here are the only documents we have telling us about royal divorce in Ugarit in the 13th century. How much can we say about what happened? She notes: “It quickly became apparent that almost anything we might come up with was as much fiction as historiography!” Holmes resides with her husband and three cats. She splits her time between Tampa, Florida, and northern France, where she gardens, weaves and plays the violin. She also has an adult son. A little about Flowers of Evil When two young women in ancient Egypt open a medical dispensary, they don't expect their first patient to be a dying florist of Amen whose last words are totally mysterious. It's Neferet and Bener-ib's nature to want to appease the ba of the murder victim by finding his killer, and their teenaged apprentice is a born detective. But between the skepticism of their own families and the malice of a rival healer, they find out the simple desire to do the right thing gets them into more trouble than they could have imagined! Our focus is on her book Flowers of Evil: Hani's Daughter Mystery Series Book 1 and a peek at Book 2 - Web of Evil, Book 3 - Wheel of Evil and Book 4 - The Melody of Evil. Exciting stories! Simon Webster is a very talented actor! It was an honor and pleasure to sit down with him and speak about his role in the Sci-Fi/Mystery Thriller show "From" (20220-2024). Simon's character (Ethan) has developed much from Season 1; he has gotten braver and wiser. Not only did Ethan create relationships with Jade and Victor, but he also plays a pivotal role. I believe that Ethan is one of the three that will solve the mystery of the children and be the savior of the town's people. Or, my theory is inaccurate and it will be someone that we less suspect. Either way, I am excited to see what Season 4 has in store for us and I cannot wait for the premiere.

Here's what we're reading, recommending, and revisiting this week.Catherine's library find is a trio of cozy mysteries by Claudia Gray, all starring Jane Austen characters: The Murder of Mr. Wickham (2022), The Late Mrs. Willoughby (2023), and The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bough (2024). These are an absolutely delightful (and non-stressful) way to revisit these characters, and there's even a little helping of romance. Mentioned: Death Comes to Pemberley, another contemporary author's take on an Austen-themed mystery.Terri's random recommendation is Artful Plus, the premium version of Artful Agenda, a digital planner we both use. With Artful Plus, you get a habit tracker and the ability to make and use your own stickers, among other perks. Mentioned: The Artful Agenda Facebook group, Artfully Obsessed. In the archives, we discussed an episode from 2020 on how parents can pay it forward (which we think is more helpful than starting or participating in a drive-thru pay-it-forward chain). Mentioned: Books from our former co-hosts: Inclusion in Action by Nicole Eredics and Neurodiversity-Affirming Schools (January 2025) by Amanda Morin.Next week's lineup: Lost S1 E23, "Exodus: Part 2," on Tuesday, December 17Shrinking S2 E6, "Get in the Sea," on Wednesday, December 18Weekly roundup on Thursday, December 19Until then (and anytime you're in need), the archives are available.

I had the honor and pleasure of speaking with Reid Price about his role as ‘Tom' who has now become one of my favorite characters in the show. We spoke about his perspective and why Jade keeps hallucinating Tom. Is it because he is seeking more of a philosopher's perspective on how to get out of the town? He also mentioned that his biggest challenge is being claustrophobic. Meaning, he had to take medication to calm his nerves before his death scene. I cannot imagine what it would be like to be stuck under the rubble and being claustrophobic – kudos to Reid for being able to pull that off!
